Spring 2024 Update - What's coming up
you should give us a garage Tour on how you store your plants I would love to see it
Mine took what looks to be cosmetic only damage at 19F and 13-14 hours below freezing. Not so tough compared to others.
I saw you took a little hit
I’m jealous you’re getting to unwrap. The brutal winter is continuing in NY. It’s going to be a while before I can think about unwrapping
Whole yard unwrapped. A little gambling and being weather aware. Tougher to call with boxes. I can probably reprotect everything in a few hours for a couple days
@@tntropics You definitely hit spring much faster than I do. I do like your fast method. Hopefully I can get the Trachys free by the end of February.
It looks SENSATIONAL! I would buy an entire seed stalk worth… okay slight exaggeration but I’d definitely like to get some fresh, bulk sabal seeds.
Contact Teddy’s Nursery, I gave him seeds and he may have seedlings. FREE Palm! Sad to see. Maybe Musa yunnanensis (a clumping banana that still grows huge) would be a great replacement that won’t need much from you.
It's getting a waggy palm
I’m going to miss that Massive Beauty Mule Palm
yep
Riverside ecotype near Los Angeles? No wonder.
Yep
Looks great! 😁 Too bad I can't unwrap mine just yet
For real I push it
I want a legit Louisiana

I feel like that would work better over here in 8a.
Maybe if you get a tougher one
sad to see, at least the plant was free😓
For sure
Sad to see 🙏♥️
Yep
Does that palm stay outdoors all year round ?
No goes in garage
@ looks really nice in a pot
What happened to the Mule Palm>
Look for the short titled bye mule palm. I ended up cutting it
Butiaful !! Love the special effects as well.
Thanks
Looks really good glad it survived
Yep butia are pretty tough
@@tntropics They're also pretty fast growing I remember when you planted it it was not that big
@@house92537 ua-cam.com/video/zVPLL05Q6Ho/v-deo.html
Yours and mine are almost identical, I can't talk that chance at least till early March only because its been a real cold , winter 12°F last night
Yes las few days have been bad
what kind of bamboo is that you have? how hardy is it?
spectabilis and bissetii -10F ua-cam.com/video/do5iT9HUiI4/v-deo.html
I bet that Butia is happy to be free. Im in a colder area and will have to wait. Thanks.
I hear ya!
i suggested a scissor lift. easy to rent and to use .and hire a proper landscaper handyman to do it.
Yes thanks for the idea.
I got down to 2.5 degrees here in Lancing TN... I let my Sabal Minors ride without any protection. They survived -6 back in January without a blemish in that arctic blast TN got. I heavily mulched and surrounded them in loose straw and put a tarp over those and it worked like a charm. I definitely covered the windmill and used lights. I really enjoy the videos especially since we live in the same climate/area. It's a wealth of knowledge!
Wow we got 4F and so far my minors look ok.
@@tntropics Fingers crossed we both come out good... Your minors survived the negatives with some damage totally uncovered so at the end of the day I'm sure they will be ok. I might have to clip out some damaged fronds but I'll take that over totally losing the palm.
I was gonna add that I know your mainly a palm guy but I also have 3 Southern Live Oaks/Quercus Virginiana planted. They have been in the ground for over three years now and 2 of them are approaching 11 feet tall. .. They sailed through that arctic blast without a hiccup. They did drop all their leaves but leafed back out in Spring like nothing happened. Most arborist or tree experts will tell you that you can't grow coastal live oaks in TN, but I think they are wrong. Most literature says they are a zone 8A tree. There is a large one growing on MTSU's campus next to the Starks agricultural building. It looks like it was plucked off the coast of Florida with it's low spreading limbs. The only thing missing is the Spanish moss.
@@johnb2740 That's awesome and I thought about planting one a couple years ago but don't really have a good spot. I knew about the one at MTSU. If you're ever in the area give me a shout and stop by I'm pretty close to MTSU
@tntropics Thanks!... Will do... I'd love to see some of your palms in person.
I have palms wrapped in Dallas, can I leave them wrapped all winter until march or late February without them rotting or having issues with no sun? It's not heavy burlap but light cloth material. I've wrapped a lot because they are all small palms and some are not fully hardy here until they're bigger. (Filiferas, Butia, Filibustas, Sago, Date Palm)
It can be tricky wrapping them in a way they will stay dry when beginning. Rain getting in there and staying wet could cause a little issue. No sun is not much of a problem if temps are cool, lets say days generally under 70F. Without pictures I can only recommend how I would suggest beginners wrap for longer term similar to these 2 videos. ua-cam.com/users/shortsaDrn8UM2e0M ua-cam.com/video/iV3d1bg2wa0/v-deo.html
Talk about sustained cold... not just absolutel minimums
You are right to some degree although most cold hardy palms can take days below freezing with no ill effects if they don't hit minimum temps. We have had a week below freezing on needle palms and S. minors unprotected
@@tntropics Good to hear! I'm in Northern NJ USDA Zone 7a/7b (border runs in my town) and in 2023 I planted 5 palms to begin my 'zone pushing' palm hobby. 2 Sabal minors. 1. Saw palmetto (green var.) and 2 needles. They all sailed through their first winter. But last year we never had more than 3 days below freezing. This year we had 5 or 6 days in a row below 32F. So Im worried. Luckily the absolute low this winter was 5F... exactly like last year, which they all survived with absolutely no damage. But the sustained 20s and teens has me worried.
@@mickobrien3156 S. minor no worries from what you said, needle ua-cam.com/video/-zRcyYNrRNM/v-deo.html , saw palmetto can be prone to spear pull everywhere because of slow growth. My minors and needles have been through way worse than what you stated. Here is Nashville which is nearby but warmer than me. I don't have access to local week chart www.wunderground.com/history/weekly/us/tn/nashville/KBNA/date/2024-1-15
@@tntropics Thanks for the reply. I'm mostly worried about the Saw palmetto. I was least worried about the needle, so it's interesting you say they're prone to spear pull, especially when they're young. I'll keep you posted in spring how my 5 palms did.
I finally plummeted down to -5°F here in MI. That seems to be lowest it’ll get here so far
And to think some places in Louisiana hit that as well
I’m in OH and we got -12, how come you guys stayed so warm?
@ I looked at tropical tidbits and the gfs model showed most of the cold went around. heck, some of western michigan up on lake michigan didn’t even fall below 10°F during it
Got down to negative 15 the other night record breaking cold I don't think it's been that cold in over fifty years Good thing I protected all my plans
Holy %#%#
@ Exactly what I was thinking when I saw the temperature
Does bubbling right after applying hydrogen means that it is a fungus 100 % ?
It definitely means it's reacting with something. So not 100% fungus for sure but if you have suspicion of fungus I would say it was likely.
All Great info🤗🙏❤️🇺🇸🤘 thank God for my palm boxes temps got down to 4°F last night here in NJ
4F here too.
My “micro climate” lol was a balmy 11f here in western nc last night. Very good info . The worst mishaps / mistakes I’ve made have been cold with moisture related. So I prepare best I can but I’m sure to most of those folks this was a rare occurrence. I hope it’s not to bad. Great info Allen as usual. !!
@@MikeSmith-ke8dg That's still pretty rough for you
Will a standard tarp work? Got a small windmill with christmas lights and I'm considering taking a large tomato cage with a tarp over it to protect it overnight
Yes a tarp is fine for up to 1-2 weeks if you start dry. It can hold moisture and mold in there if not checked over a longer term.
It got down to -12 this morning. Probably the worst winter we’ve had in a while!
Wow sorry
Sorry brother RIP. That waggy will look really nice there.
Thanks
Just rewatching some of your old youtube videos, now I can't wait until spring
Yep right now the temps stink
@@tntropics Yep It looks like next week for us, Temperatures are going to go back to average, 40s in the days and 30s/high 20s in the Night
It's getting down to -1 here in z7a PA. I wrapped my Young Sabal minor and my big Sabal minor with a Blanket, and I protected my young Needle Palm with Christmas lights and a blanket. Hopefully, this is it for the Cold. Stay safe and Warm. God bless.🌴
Sounds good
Hey Allen- we're in the nashville area and we've got a bunch of 3-4' windmills and some small sables. Currently have them wrapped in mini incandescent christmas lights and frost cloth over that, is there anything else we should do to prepare for these upcoming single-digit temps next week? I'm worried because the lights don't seem to give off very much heat.. thanks for all the great videos, we still have much to learn!
100 mini INCANDESCENT lights with frost cloth wrapped in mummy style with fronds tied up should do the trick on a 3-4 foot palm. During this rain event you could put a garbage bag over top to keep water out just don't leave it past Thursday. If you are worried get a wireless thermometer to stick in there www.walmart.com/ip/AcuRite-Wireless-Digital-Thermometer/45810751?classType=REGULAR&athbdg=L1102&adsRedirect=true ua-cam.com/video/5vP4ecPWkGE/v-deo.html
Is it bad to keep palms wrapped up for too long? Like a few weeks?
They can be wrapped for long periods 2-3 months if dry
One can never be too prepared , all the best 🙏🙏🙏❤️🇺🇸🌴🌴🌴🌴🌴🌴🌴
Yep
Great video and palms are looking great! We have a forecast of consecutive nights at -9 F next week in Ohio. I’m going to really have to protect my windmill palm and sabal minor. 😢
-9F whew that's a tough one.
Sad day
Yep
Bei wieviel Grad ist sie kaputt gegangen?
It was wrapped.
@ okay thats really sad 😔
Totally understandable. I think that's the smart decision and one that most zone pushers have to face one day.
Thanks for the support!
Very sad… but I totally understand. All of us are going to have to do this at some point.
Even IF I could build a 25 foot box you can't bend upward fronds the size of your wrist
Przeżyje tylko musisz ją ogrzać
Thanks
Thats so sad to hear ! But one can only do so much !
Thanks
Sorry to hear this.
Thanks
Thank u for all this winter info. I'm literally.modeling my backyard after yours here in Costal Va. First winter so far, so good
Awesome take a look and my garden tour playlists
damnnn
Yep
It had a good run!
Thanks yep it did
R.I.P 🌴waggie will be a great replacement
Thanks
Is it sabal palmetto and sabal minor?
In the video are first Trachycarpus fortunei, then needle palms then Sabal Birmingham
Oh man😮 I’m so sorry that mule palm was one of the best pushes I have ever seen. It was really looking beautiful this past summer. RIP
Thanks
Will you be cutting it down or trying to dig it up?
It's already cut. Took about a hour to cut it. too big to dig up and relocate without equipment
@tntropics ahh that's sad but understandable. I've got one indoors right now I'll be planting this spring in western kentucky. It will be right up by the house and im going to be boxing it every winter so fingers crossed I get some good years out of it! All my other palms just get frost cloth when severely cold (trachys/sabal minor varieties)
@@BEadventures71 When it gets big you can't tie up the fronds except middle ones already pointed up and the fronds are so tall it is hard to box.
