- Is there a plant for exotic for garden cultivation than a palm tree? Huge evergreen leaves, thick textured trunks and sometimes exotic fruits make palm trees a highly desirable plant for many gardeners. Growers around the world search out special palms species to add to their garden to create a tropical style.
This video looks at some of the Palms growing in Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens in Dorset, UK (Zone 9b). The gardens curator David Pearce talks through a selection of hardy palms that are able to provide tropical foliage in gardens that experience cooler winters. These cold tolerant palm trees will thrive in temperatures below freezing and could be eventually grow into tree sized proportions! We also look at rare palm trees, some of which are growing surprisingly fast or showing unexpected tolerance to colder weather. Amongst these rare and select species you’ll find enormous palm leaves, silver foliage and naturally smooth stems that transport you straight to the tropics.

This series of videos at Abbotsbury have been great! really enjoyed watching them, brilliant info! Keep them coming Craig 🙌🙌
More to come! 😀 Thanks for watching 👍
Thanks gents, great info.
Great video and information, thank you
Great video and great information, thanks
I have several of the Fortunei in my yard, all around my house, as they're native here. The Butias are also all around the neighborhood, including town hall and the elementary school. I have noticed several other palm types up and down the coast, but haven't figured out what they are yet. Maybe now that I've seen this, I'll be able to identify them if they're one of these types. I'm going to try to strip one of my Fortunei and see how it looks.
Brilliant watch thank you for fascinating video 👏
Thank you for watching 😀
Growing a Butia capitata in S Wales at 620 feet above sea level. Doing great.
Martianus should not be anywhere close to fortunei in terms of hardiness.... a bit of caution is well needed.
The brahea is magic though.
Make a few more like this craig. Love this one!
Thank you so much! That Martianus has been growing outdoors in that spot for decades, there are several in the gardens 🌴
Amazing place I will have visit one day. I have brahaea edulis thats proven fairly hardy with gaint leaves 🍃 . And this gives my Hope my my baby Martianus. Very well fimed and excellent content and detail 👏 Craig and David.
Thank you both great video been waiting for this one .Craig when are you going to plant some of those in you garden there not big lol. Bananas next Craig.
Great video Craig, very interesting to see the palms growing down there and I’m sure the Butia eriospatha will settle in well!
Thanks George, we thought you might enjoy this one with your clear passion for palms 😀
@@GrowParadise Definitely, there's certainly some beauties to see at Abbotsbury!
Great information. I have many of these palms… of course I cover in the winter. Love the tour
Thanks 😀 Yes I imagine it gets quite cold in NY?
@@GrowParadise It does but I carefully protect them
Great video Craig, absolutely love it, absolutely love growing palms!😊😊❤
I also love Scheffleras, can we see a ficus video on those please?
Thanks! We’ve already done a Schefflera video, enjoy it here: ua-cam.com/video/vaCg1mifMtA/v-deo.htmlsi=C4u2jd2MZZJXhg-L
Oh my, that Brahea 15:50 🤩 Such dramatic leaves
It’s incredible isn’t it 😀
Nice to know
It would be cool to do a video focused on the Yuccas, assuming they have lots of those. Puyas also.
To answer his question, canary island date palms do produce edible, and reportedly tastey, fruits. They are, however, unlikely to fruit in the UK due to our climate.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge 🌱😀
@@GrowParadise It might seem off topic, but do you happen to know if colocasias can set seed in the UK? I just got a few pink chinas and was wondering if growing multiple types could lead to hybrids. Would it be viable in an unheated, but insulated greenhouse setting?
Really good video guys. The brahea the outstanding palm in the collection. Just superb. Followed closely by the martianus. I'm growing a fortunei x Martianus up here outdoors to see whether it'll tolerate our temps, the standard martianus wont. Hopefully some martianus features will develop but with some more of the fortunei mother plant toughness
That will be an interesting hybrid, I hope it will grow nice and fast for you with some hybrid vigour 🌴
How about hardy begonias at Abbotsbury, for a future video?
Great suggestion Russell, there’s certainly plenty to showcase 😀
You should put affiliate links in your descriptions for your sound gear. It's excellent audio. :)
Great video. When I visited I thought the Brahea was a stand out palm even better in real life.
As lots of the palms are so close and the Trachys self seed I wonder if Martiianus has crossed with the Fortuneiis and self seeded.
That’s a great point, there was a carpet of seedlings beneath them too 🌱🤔
Got lost with the amount of palms 🌴
the Scots pine has silvery foliage for similar adaptations to high altitude palms
Very true, and another beautiful plant 😀
Would love to see a ground cover focus.
That’s a brilliant idea, we’ll make a note of it and keep your eyes peeled for future videos 😀🌱
If you close your eyes it sounds like Henry Cavil talking about plants.
