Is Max Martin the REAL King of Pop?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 22 тра 2024
- Max Martin is arguably the most influential person in international music over the last thirty years. Whilst some may not be familiar with his name, they almost certainly have sang his lyrics or hummed his melodies.
As of 2023, he is the third most successful songwriter in the history of the American billboard charts with 25 US no 1s. Only Paul McCartney who has 32 and John Lennon with 26, have more. With 25 US no.1s he has the same amount, as Michael Jackson and Madonna put together. His influence working with almost all of the world’s biggest pop stars and his longevity as a hitmaker are simply unparalleled.
So just who exactly is Max Martin? Is that even his real name? How did a former metal singer end up a pop genius? Why did he originally turn down the chance to work with Michael Jackson? What are the secrets to his songwriting success? Why did Kelly Clarkson not enjoy recording with him? And who exactly are his proteges such as Dr Luke & Shellback? This mini-documentary explores these questions and more.

Max Martin is responsible for the soundtrack of my life, to me he is the Mozart of our generation! 🏆
he really has dominated pop music for the last 25-30 years.
There's no song written or produced by Max Martin that I wouldn't like. He's a genius and with Denniz Pop (R.I.P.) he's made amazing songs for Ace of Base and many others. I LOVE swedish artists!!!
The musical show, & Juliet use all his hits. It's amazing
Your life must have the worst soundtrack ever.
You’re comparing Monzart to Martin🤦🏻♀️
Max Martin is responsible for the new wave of pop music from the mid 90s onwards. 💗
he's dominated pop music since the mid-90s. His longevity is phenomenal
We are talking about Michael Jackson being an incredible singer and dancer and without a doubt a great songwriter. He wrote from the album Thriller three of the most memorable songs in all of pop and rock music: Beat It, Billie Jean and Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'. The Bad album is almost an author record and from there hits like Smooth Criminal, The Way You Make Me Feel, Dirty Diana, Bad and I Just Can't Stop Loving You came out that reached the Hot 100 and 5 reached the top 10. I mean, Michael could write hits for other artists too; he wrote and produced Rebbie Jackson's Centipede and Diana Ross' Muscles.
I guess in terms of cultural impact MJ would have to win
@@jonnyharvey MJ had 13 no 1 hits on the Billboard Charts. Max Martin has 21 to this date and still keeps pumping out hits after hits. I wont say nothing bad about MJ but when it comes to write hits songs, Max Martin is way more successful.
@@tr6431stop MJ was way more successful and his best songs are clearly better than max's best songs I assume you mean 21 hits MJ has way more than that ✌️
@@michaelsevilla3697 No.. I talk about No 1 on the Billboard list. There are only two other people who has more no 1 hits than Max Martin on the billboard list and those two are ex-beatles members. Facts are facts.
@@tr6431 chris is nowhere MJ's level an an artist having more number 1 hits doesn't mean anything he'll never have MJ's impact and influence chris has more number 1's than prince he's not even close to prince's level either ✌️
I owe Max Martin my life for making BSB who they are today and creating Robyn’s ‘Do You Know What It Takes’ and ‘Show Me Love’ 🥹
he was really key in the success of BSB. I doubt they would've been as big without him
Max Martin is a big part of my favorite Band’s comeback with Its my life, they helped Bon Jovi get their rock anthem for the 2,000s.
Another favorite songwriter or producer is Desmond Child he helped my fave band to have their breakthrough lbun with Slippery when wet.
Max is such a talent and chooses to share that with so many artists. He really doesnt have a specific sound like The Neptunes or Timbaland - he just knows how to make great pop music to fit the artist he's working with. Unbelievable that Kelly Clarkson wanted Since Youve Been Gone and Behind Those Hazel Eyes left off her sophomore album. She owes the success of her career, particular the "Breakaway" from her American Idol start to those songs. Though she's always been someone who has had a bit of a poor attitude towards songwriters and producers - like how she publically went after Ryan Tedder for "Already Gone" sounding like another Tedder production, Beyoncé's "Halo".
yes the Kelly information was taken from Clive Davis' book. I remember there was a problem with 'Already Gone'- I will have to look into that. Really good point about Max not having a specific sound - thanks for that.
She always been bad at choosing singles.
@@jonnyharvey He and Cheiron *had* a very, very specific sound. However, in the early 2000's it stopped working as mainstream was progressing towards guitar music more. I would not be surpised if he had learned from that experience, that having a a specific sound can work very well in one moment, but can work against you the next. After all, a typical sound goes into fashion, but also goes out of fashion.
Disagree that he doesn't have a specific sound. Max's compositions are extremely influenced by Baroque composers, especially Bach. You seem to be talking about sound timbre, or put another way, the way the actual instruments/synths/production sounds vs. the songwriting composition. Max doesn't really produce. He can, but Max is a songwriter. The production elements, i.e. the unique "sounds" (regardless of "notes") aren't his focus. Max focuses on melody and harmony. But Max absolutely has an extremely distinct melodic/harmonic sound. It's very, very heavily influenced by Baroque (a period of classical) music. Max almost certainly grew up listening to a lot of Bach and other German composers.
The extremely heavy usage of the V chord in minor key through the late 90's and early 2000's was almost exclusively due to Max, and is a really good display of his love for that ultra-dark Baroque sound.
He's a master of modern pop, but there's only one king of pop.
It's not a coincedence that so many Swedish song writers have a background in metal music, the love for harmonies, hooks and rythm is all there in hard rock and metal music from the 70's and 80's.
Michael Jackson will forever be The undisputed King of Pop 🙌🏾 his career expanded over 40 yrs and no artist will ever top Thriller, his impact, influence or his contributions to music. He was also a smart businessman too getting into publishing, I mean he owned The Beatles for crying out loud. 😂. However Max Martin will for sure go down in history as 1 of Pop music greatest producer and songwriters in history.
While Max did redefine pop music in the 90s, Michael is definitively the King of Pop for bringing kick starting starting the genre.
they worked together v briefly in the mid-90s. Doing some work on 3T's album
He's the industry's not-so-secret weapon!
Just because someone is not in the spotlight doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be credited.
Damn right!
Let's not forget some of the greatest 90's pop tracks that he produced for Leila K, Solid Harmonie, Five and Jessica Folcker, even though they didn't chart in US. There were also brilliant rock/pop songs for Lambretta and Ana Johnsson.
Thanks for this - I will have to look into them sometime

Thanks for this great video ! Also Max's first credit production in 1994 for E-Type's "Made in Sweden" on Stockholm Records
Did I mention his first songwriting credit?
@@jonnyharvey yes, 1995 😉
He is definitely the king of pop, and just kinda modern music in general tbh. That signature sound he had in the late 90's/early 2000's is so distinct that you can make faux-Max Martin tracks as some artists often do specifically to evoke that sound and people instantly recognize it as being early 2000's. Crazy to think he single-handedly created such a huge part of culture.
He worked with other producers at Cheiron who made these songs. Even before Max joined, the cheiron drums were already a bit typical/specific in style/sound
@@PowerRedBullTypology Sorry, but you seem to be mistaken about what I am calling genius within the music I'm referencing. Max Martin has an extremely Baroque-heavy sound that did not appear before him, and no one else has really showed as much prowess as him since. I'm aware he was part of a music collaboration group - but they did not flirt with the heavy harmonic minor baroque sound that made Max Martin the legend he is. You can't just say "he's from this group, so therefor;" - you can't just ignore the musical uniqueness of his productions vs those of his contemporaries. Did those other Cheiron disciples go on to make compositions that could easily be translated into common practice Baroque pieces? No, they didn't, not even close, not a single one of them. Only Max did. Max Martin is a living musical genius, and any attempt to downplay that is just a display of musical ignorance.
Max Martin melded Baroque with contemporary in a way that completely changed pop music, and that change is currently an ongoing influence. Any pop song where the melody is centered around 1 and the first three chords are i - V - bIII will make virtually every single living person in a country with Internet think of Max Martin, even if they don't know his name. It's so distinct that if you want to go for an early 2000's pop sound, the first three chords of your progression are almost guaranteed to be i - V - bIII.
Max is absolutely the genius behind this shift and there is no evidence otherwise. If you have evidence of other Cheiron songwriters using harmonic minor Baroque sounds before the late 90's (when Max Martin made this sound the dominant pop sound,) I'd love to see evidence of it, but I've seen people make the exact claim you're making for over 20 years and never seen a single one of those people produce a shred of evidence.
I love your videos! ❤
Thank you 😀😀🙌🙌
dang, I have most of those songs on my playlist and I know all of them. I'm familiar with his name because I've seen it in song credits a lot
Yes he definitely is!
Max Martin and Dr. Luke were the true masters of pop!! I
they had great chemistry
Can't wait to hear what he and Madonna have been working on.

Please do a video on Desmond Child?
He started co write with artists since late70s, child has created most the catchy songs of pop rock like I was made for loving you by Kiss, Living on a prayer with Bon Jovi, dude looks like a lady by Aerosmith and many others
I'm dying to read his book 😀

Besides all of his #1 hits, I’m grateful for him and Shellback for working with Avril Lavigne on Goodbye Lullaby.
I've never properly listened to that record. Will have to give it a try sometime.
@@jonnyharvey would love to hear your opinion on it! Although he worked with her only in the most pop songs (what the hell, wish you were here, smile and I love you)
@@jonnyharvey Despite the harsh reception Goodbye Lullaby recieves, there is still a lot of artistic merits that I have to admire. The non singles keep the record balanced.

That’s really a great video, I didn’t know any of that, thanks for sharing, on the other hand, lots of great talents came out of Sweden that shaped the music of pop.
But this video explains why I didn’t like Madonna‘s album rebel, or Kylie‘s album eggs, because they are not really melody pop, I am a melody pop fan and that’s why all the music that Max produces is the kind of pop I like.
thank you. I didn't include any of his songwriting principles - that will have to be another video.
He was in Its Alive❤ great band in the 80s 9s

Greetings from Amsterdam the Netherlands.
I have heard of Max Martin. He was in a documentary on his mentor
The one about Dennis Pop. It’s on UA-cam . He seemed like a really talented guy
@@jonnyharvey Yes he was he produced for Ace Of Base.
Max's name usually acts as a prologue for any song he works on, so its surprising to see so many more here that I didn't know he was involved in!
oh that's good to hear cause I could've done a two hour documentary if I had the time. There were countless songs and artists I didn't mention - Justin Bieber, Ed Sheerhan, Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Lopez, Solid Harmonie, Celine Dion, Usher, Avril Lavigne etc.
Pop mastermind
😀
I'm shocked you didn't mention him in a recording studio with Madonna.
Yeah, there were so many details - I guess I didn't think Madonna was that key to his story atm - might change if their collaboration is amazing? The documentary could've been a few hours long-something was going to slip. I did read in the Time magazine interview from 2001 that his dream collaboration was Madonna!!!
I’d divide up his career into six eras so far; The Swedish Pop Era, The Boyband Era, The Pop Rock Era, The Mentor Era and The Nostalgia Era. What era do you think he’s going to have next?
The Comeback era ;)
@@oneofthelastsurvivingdoges8832 He worked with Ariana Grande again on her upcoming album, so perhaps this will be his comeback era.

Katy Perry. Bonnie mckee. Max Martin and dr Luke. My god they ruled the 2010s 😢🎉❤
they really did - the dream team
the title of this video is just plain disrespectful… michael saw all his glory before max martin saw any success or anybody knew who he was. if anything max martin picked where mike left off and he expanded on what michael did in pop music. MJ laid the foundation ! don’t ever forget it
Talk about it 🙌🏾
MJ is forever the undisputed king of pop! The disrespect in the title will not be tolerated! LOL
Idk if this video will mention this but there's a musical called &Juliet that uses his songs. It begins at the end of Romeo & Juliet if Juliet never committed suicide.
I didn’t include that cause I thought a lot of people knew about that already
Is he even real??????? Unbelievable!
Let's hope the Max Martin magic will conjure up a hit single (or two) for Madonna now that they're collaborating. Maybe a return to melodic dance-pop is the reset she needs after 40 plus years! 😎
I would like her to go back to melodic dance-pop. But I don't think Madonna had anything to prove at this point. And so much is stacked against her, with so much of the industry being ageist. And it's 15 years since she's really had a hit.
@@jonnyharvey I totally agree that ageism is a huge obstacle for Madge and every major female pop artist over 35 since radio programmers seem to refuse playing anything from them no matter how banging it might be. Understandably, she's trying to return to the Top 40 charts any way she can and maybe ol' Max can do the trick since those joyless Frozen trap remixes on Tik Tok failed to do so last year.
@@christopherproietti645 If Cher could do it Madonna can as well!
We need to have a pop revival including comebacks from older artist as well as new artist. Pop music has been so boring the past few years
I agree with you there - it’s really not what it used to be
the amount of chord progressions used in pop music have been declining since the 70's. Today, every song follows one of a few simple 4 chord progressions, hence they all sound the same.
Yeah, what if Backstreet Boys had a song called "Back to Basics" lol
Lessen to all artists. If max Martin offers you hit me baby one more time. You f-in take it and don't complain. Those artists who said no are probably on suicide watch now. And are living in regret. Imagine all the millions they missed out on
Maybe it wouldn’t have been as big if they did it? Any like all songwriters Max has written plenty of flops
No! He’s The Real King Of Rock
And Roll!
Funny his mentor died around the time he got his first number one
Yes it’s a shame

I'm confussed. I kissed a girl was written by Cathy Dennis 🤔
she was just one of the co-writers. Max Martin, Dr Luke & Katy Perry also wrote it
@@jonnyharvey How many people did it take to write such a simple song? 😂🤷 It's not exactly bohemian rhapsody is it.
@03:43 OK so Max Martin made me gay. That's the first album I OBSESSED over when I was a kid. Most subsequent MM songs released in France I loved. I know why now.
I find him so fcking attractive Fck he is THE GOAT
I know - humble, talented & rich!! But he’s married ☹️
Make a video about PJ Harvey please
I’d like to but I don’t know that much about her (other than she’s ridiculously talented & critically acclaimed)
If Michael Jackson is the King of pop, Max is the God
MJ fans are so fragile. Jesus. Max has way more nr 1 hits and stayed on the top way longer (and he is still doing it) And we are talking about writing songs, not who is the better singer or dancer. If you actually go back to most of MJs songs, they are horribly outdated. And saying he layed the foundation for pop that Max just continued. There are people who did it before MJ. Im was a huge MJ fan, but tired of fanboys chocking on his nuts.
What in the 480p?
I did the video in 1080p. A lot of older footage, I couldn't find in 1080p.
@@jonnyharvey For some reason UA-cam doesn’t let me select quality higher than 480p on your videos. Is that an issue on my end?

We are not gonna keep disrespecting the greatest of all time Michael Joseph Jackson…..
Yet ppl giving credit to Britney who was just an employee
nobody else could have delivered and performed those songs like she did tho
i honestly think many of the female pop icons (except P!nk and Taylor) in the 2000s would not have reached any status without him. Katy, Brtiney, Jessie J, or most of others needed Max's song craftsmenship. Many of these artist have different strengths but to survive you needed hits first. period
