    OMG! I've waited for this interview for so damn long. Max martin is the reason a lot of people claim music sounds the same this generation. He is such an incredibly hard working man that he has saturated the charts for 2 decades with hits. You can't blame him and Avicii death is a case to be made about fame impacting creation, although I would never compare him to Max's level. Max has stayed hidden, he's extremely successful but no one out of the music industry knows him. When he has passed on he will absolutely go in the Hall of Fame with the very best. I think when the hits stop coming we might see some of his most creative work just like the beginning of his career with the Ace of Base and Backstreet Boys.

  • @johnnycaper_

    simple melodies is key to everything, you just have to let go of that feeling like damn this is too simple. It's a thin line between that and the moment where you start adding and tweaking chords, melodies and stuff and start to use some complicated music theory stuff. Sure it's fun and it helps you evolve, but damn you can trip in that stuff and then you lose the main idea. If the music makes you bounce, if it makes you feel good, if you can visualise it and just basically make it talk back to you then damn you've got a hit. I think the key to hit record is simple, sometimes annoying and repetitive melody and structure - if that loop makes you sit there and listen to it for hours then you've got a banger lol.

I have made it a habit to always have my phone nearby so i can record it instantly. It's probably that half-wake state that allows for ideas still flowing freely while at the same time being wake enough to "notice" them and grab the phone. Two days after Prince had passed away i had a dream of him and me being in the studio recording a song together. I woke up early enough to record the main melody, beat and lyrics into my phone. So if someday i should release the song, he definitely will get credit and his estate a portion of royalties, should it blow up :)

    Max emphasizes simplicity in today's songwriting, but according to the great New York singer/songwriter, Laura Nyro, "as beautiful as simplicity is, it can become a tradition that stands in the way of exploration". Max is a clever collaborative songwriter who crafts relatively simple rule driven songs directed at a young audience for superior commercial success. In contrast, Laura Nyro was a creative genius who wrote highly innovative and complex songs that broke all the rules in the pursuit of creating music as art, yet her songs still achieved great commerical success. For example, in November 1969, three Nyro songs were in the USA top 7: Eli's Comin', And When I Die, and the No.1 Wedding Bell Blues (which has no chorus). Nyro's unique urban NYC songs have stood the test of time: Wedding Bell Blues has been in about two dozen TV shows such as Glee, and she has been sampled by many rappers, including Kanye. Do pop songs these days really need to be simple to be successful, is there a commercial aversion to risk taking, and is the audience being under-estimated, or is there just a lack of truly great pop songwriters.

      Back then, Pop music was the goto for all music. Now, with the simplicities of DAW's and software/hardware, music has grown to truly break boundaries. The experimental side hasdriven itself into the underground scene, while Pop music exists for sing alongs.

      @voilaviolamh Wrong. You have not dove deep into the world of today's music. Perhaps you turn on the radio and equate that with the quality of modern music.
      I will tell you that this is far from truth, and there are plenty of artists who have grown beyond what the greats of 300 years ago demonstrated.

      @voilaviolamh It's apples and oranges, I don't think its fair to compare the "level of innovation" between different centuries. I agree that a lot of music today focus more on sound (nothing wrong with that) but there are also musicians who do really innovative stuff today when it comes to rhythm, harmony and melody.
      Like for example - all the jazz musicians?? You said that the most innovate period was around 1650-1930. After 1930 came people like Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Oscar Peterson, Michael Brecker... a lot of crazy innovative musicians. Like Etienne said, I suggest that you explore more genres

    • @NickChase
      @NickChase 5 років тому +4

      There is no tricks only knowledge and inspiration, even max says that at: 21:30
      You just have it in you or you don't, there is no magical formula for hit making. You need to have courage in order to make something new, and courage to be yourself is where things happen. When you close yourself in the box and follow other man principles you cant actually make sometwnew and inspiring.
      Remember that, when you choose to be yourself you will make something unbelievable, because your perception is limited in this world, but your intuitive part is connected to place where real ideas come from. Nikola Tesla talked abot it and its true. But we are learned from early age that we can only trust our senses, that's why people think Max have some kind of secret.

    • @nickepic1863
      @nickepic1863 2 роки тому

      There is no secret. Even if you do something amazing and new, in just one month other people will copy your idea and you will have market full of same music.
      You are born with that, music doesn't come from a brain, but from some strange place that we can't explain. And music doesn't come to the people that sit around and wait for inspiration, but to the people that work 24/7. I can guarantee you that most of Max Martin ideas are crap, we only hear 10%. Even Dua Lipa producer Kirkpatrick explained that most of his ideas are crap. But you need to go through crap ideas in order to find rare gem. This is what Max Martin explained when he talked about his band and playing regularly even when there was no live performance.
      Ofc you will find amazing idea, and what next? how do you build song around that 10-15 second loop? That's when you use tools he explained. And tools come with experience and learning from others, studying whats currently on the market and how industry is evolving. Not to mention that you need to leave ego tripping, because music feels that and it will never come when you ego tripping.

      Yes and the Denniz Pop philosophy that a song should be instantly recognized within first seconds is actually the same philosophy Stikkan Andersson inspired ABBA. It's true though. There are actually some psychological aspects to take advantage of to create a generic hit. What's important is to know about all this but never set any rules. Breaking the "rules" is just basically pushing boundaries and is vital for evolution in music. Music is art. What's cool is I now realise Max Martins hits or other cheesy radio pop songs and the massive work behind it. Cant believe I took many of these songs for granted. Respekt to Max and the late great Denniz Pop.
