The “orange peel” at the bottom of the panels on the car is called rock guard. I’m in the collision repair business and when we have to fix or replace a panel we have to apply the rock guard to match the rest of the rock guard from the factory. Usually is just a spray can. It is applied on top of the primer (because primer is designed to fill or build.) then you have to use sealer before you continue with base coat and clear coat to avoid the color of the roach guard material bleeding through.

Those 5cyl engines are damn bulletproof, especially in non-turbo form. CIS maintenance is a lost art, and IIRC there are some hard to find or NLA CGT-specific bits that can cause you some heartache. It's like a more complex Golf/Rabbit of the era.
I bought a new one in 1985 and put 238K on in in 8 years using it mostly for a dedicated courier service all over NYS in all weather conditions. VERY low maintenance! Fuel pump and starter motor replaced at just over 210K. Oil changes were a snap. I did all the maintaining after the warranty expired and it was very simple and not expensive at all. Great video Larry. It might be interesting to go more in depth on the orange peel on the rocker panels of some cars. It's not a painting technique per se, but a coating that is applied before paint. Almost like a lighter version of a spray on bed liner. Back in the day we called it chip guard.
That heavy orange peel is chip guard. Paint without binder gets mixed in with it and it's sprayed on. It stays semi soft so it doesn't crack out from stone chips.
I remember as a teen driving this car in the Chicago North Shore area. It looked awesome back in the 80's You guys did a phenomenal job on this detail. It's still a head turner. Movie Trivia answer......The Bourne Identity 2002.
The purpose of the "orange peel" on the rockers is because the rockers are sprayed with a heavy rubberized coating befor final paint that acts as a bit of protection against the rock chips and road grime like you have mentioned. It allows the paint to be chipped off without exposing bare metal.
The Audi GT Coupe was the very first car I ever bought for myself in 1984! When I sold it in 1992 it had 385,000 miles on it! I seriously wish I’d never sold that car! I’d buy this one in a heartbeat as it brings back all the memories of my GT!!

Chip guard is actually a different material sprayed on rockers before paint to help reduce chipping. Paint alone chips easily, but adding chip guard reduces it, but like you said, helps hide it with its texture as well. Kind of dual purpose. Most manufacturers know this and send vehicles out from the factory with it.
@@chrisk6309 He's wrong. If you look at the time stamp 4:16 you can see the front suspension setup from an aircooled VW. That is 100% VW under that shell. You can also see the fuel spout coming out of the hood. Thats where the factory Beetle fuel tank is.
Under the rocker paint is a very similar coating to modern floor sound deadener. It not only flattens the finish, it also allows the paint to ‘give’ reducing stone chips and it also acts as another layer of sound deadening.
I think that the orange peal thing in the rockerpanel is stone chip paint (softer than paint so it do not chip off. It protects the car from getting rusty from stonechips that take away the paint. Sorry bad english 😂
Another great video. On 2 terrific base models of incredible generation of iconic German cars. However I'm very excited for the 2002. Since I use to own, work and race. 2002's, Euro twin carb Ti's, and of course 2002Tii's. The round tail lights with the front pointed bumper-ettes indicate this is really a 1973!!! Which has a far better suspension and road feel than the 'water bed' ride of the square tail light lower horsepower 1974!
Nice to see one of these again. I taught a friend of mine how to drive a manual in one of these. He had just moved to the states and bought one as his first car, even though he couldn't drive it. 😂
Hey Larry, Try vibrating the interior carpet with a massage gun while vacuuming. You'll be VERY surprised with the result. love these old audi's, nice work! learned a lot as usual
I was so waiting for this one! I had an '82 Coupe GT in college, and watching you detail this one brought back the countless hours 20 year old me spent detailing mine (Armour All and Maquire's, it was the '90s). At the end of the video, I was also reminded of the countless hours spent at Len Stoler Audi getting service :(. That said, I always thought that the raise spoilers came on later year cars ( mine was flush to the body color trunk lid), but this one had it. Since mine lacked bougie things like the leather, power windows, and multiple cracks on the dash (I only had one), I guess it was a trim level difference instead. I did have the optional leaking trunk though! Shame we could hear it fire up, as that inline sounds great. The car also handled really well,. Thanks for the video!
I had this car in college in New England 1980 GT Coupe. Absolutely loved it. When I graduated I moved to Florida and traded it for another Gt Coupe. Loved it until I made a mistake and traded it for a BMW 325IS. I have had seven Audis to this point. Big fan.
Love your videos. To clarify, the orange peel at the lower rockers is not necessarily to hide rock chips. More accurately, this is an anti-chip undercoating which provides improved adhesion and a ductile deformable layer which helps to absorb impacts, preventing paint from chipping off as easily
Great video. I owned two of these cars , an 83 and an 88. Funny to watch this and see you cleaning the dirt from all the spots it used to build up in with my cars!
Hi Larry, the pricture of the BMW racing in Europe is on Circuit Zandvoort in The Netherlands I think. I live 30 mins away. The corner is called Het Scheivlak, how cool!
Love Audi’s of that era . I had an Audi 200 Quattro from then . A big executive people mover . Back then I was heavily into forest rallying . I was a rally navigator/ co- driver . We had to modify it. So it ended up with upgraded suspension along with strut braces etc . Then somewhere it ended up getting a bigger turbo and intercooler too . That car as big as it was with 300 bhp and tons of torque . Was so much fun to drive . Yet it just looked bog standard when parked. Oh yes it was in white too . Great vlog Larry . Regards from UK 🇬🇧 Martin
There are SO many very similar vintage buggy bodies out there... Though the hood shape is different, this looks very similar to a California Clipper or Sand Winder. Though Meyers did make an actual Manx Corvair too. The rear seat area looks a bit different though, with the recessed sections between the rear fenders. Also, since this is in Northeast, you'd be shocked to find out how many buggy/kit companies were in the New England area.
The buggy looks like it’s a 1966 Meyers Manx Volkswagen came out in late 60s early 70s. They are just a fiberglass body mounted on a Volkswagen chassis. They are rare I believe, these buggy’s were usually for the beach Scene. Let us know what your friend plans to do with it. Looks like a cool project.
That orange peel looking material actually more resembles undercoating or a very soft paintable bedliner. While it does minimize the look of chips it helps to protect against the rocks so they dont chip all the way to bare metal.
Another amazing restoration and brilliant information on the process, but I have to say, I got the most information seeing Larry greet the dog before the human. I always thought I was in the right place here, but now I know it without question.
I owned two 1981 Coupes. One a five speed, the other an automatic. Both unique and timeless in design. The five speed was incredible, the automatic "meh". Glad to see this car flip into loving hands. One main flaw of both was the adhesive that held the firewall to the body, they both leaked over time and had moisture issues fall/winter.
The “orange peel” at the bottom of the panels on the car is called rock guard.
I’m in the collision repair business and when we have to fix or replace a panel we have to apply the rock guard to match the rest of the rock guard from the factory. Usually is just a spray can. @@chrisk6309 He's wrong. If you look at the time stamp 4:16 you can see the front suspension setup from an aircooled VW. That is 100% VW under that shell.
You can also see the fuel spout coming out of the hood. Thats where the factory Beetle fuel tank is.
@@LerrySanders good point about the fuel filler being in the right spot. I think you got it right.
@Larry, yeah, that's what I was thinking too. 👍🏻
There are quite a few types from back then, that came out after the Manx 1st did.
Under the rocker paint is a very similar coating to modern floor sound deadener. It not only flattens the finish, it also allows the paint to ‘give’ reducing stone chips and it also acts as another layer of sound deadening.
This is very entertaining content
That interior transformation is pretty astounding. Good work like usual
Who has a safety deposit box with 6 passports and a gun? - The Bourne Identity
I think that the orange peal thing in the rockerpanel is stone chip paint (softer than paint so it do not chip off. It protects the car from getting rusty from stonechips that take away the paint. Sorry bad english 😂
surprised the fork lift carried the car so easily
Another great video. On 2 terrific base models of incredible generation of iconic German cars.
However I'm very excited for the 2002. Since I use to own, work and race. 2002's, Euro twin carb Ti's, and of course 2002Tii's. The round tail lights with the front pointed bumper-ettes indicate this is really a 1973!!! Which has a far better suspension and road feel than the 'water bed' ride of the square tail light lower horsepower 1974!
Hah, I’d give you 5k just for the 2002
It's crazy that it'll probably sell for well over 5k lol
Nice to see one of these again. I taught a friend of mine how to drive a manual in one of these. He had just moved to the states and bought one as his first car, even though he couldn't drive it. 😂
BUY THAT CADDY AND FIXR UP! That would be epic!
Watching detailing jobs is a neat freaks dream. Great work, your shop is a dream!
Big fan.
dude thank you so much for the content ive used so many tips from your channel over the years. you the detail goat.
Really, really enjoyed this one! Watching the dirt and grime roll off the Audi was so therapeutic!
I'm not sure why but this was so satisfying to watch. bringing a collectable back from the dead
Noticed he's got some Audi C5's in that collection. I have a 4.2 A6 myself I believe they are one of the prettiest cars ever.
Kicking myself in the foot for not buying one of these for $600 when I was 17. Had a few 200’s and loved them so much
Love your videos. To clarify, the orange peel at the lower rockers is not necessarily to hide rock chips. More accurately, this is an anti-chip undercoating which provides improved adhesion and a ductile deformable layer which helps to absorb impacts, preventing paint from chipping off as easily
Good point!

The back window was filmy like that because tint was in there at one point.
$2000 for the bmer it's a dream deal. If the engine stars, you got to have 10 grand hear in Europe for that one.
Speaking of dads and rally my dad used to drive a rally car in New Zealand and he had a pretty bad crash but he’s fine now.
