This conversation reminds me of contemporary reports I have read about the devastation that could be inflicted by one flock of passenger pigeons back in the 19th century. I remember reading a magazine article from Iowa in which a farmer lost an entire field of grain in three days. No amount of shooting or beating could drive away the birds. They were described as rolling over each other like waves of water.

To say nothing of being able to save up enough money to have on hand if someone in their family gets sick or injured.
It sure is easy to sit on your $1,000 electronic device, with a full belly, in a completely climate controlled 2,000 square foot home, knowing your very need and a majority of your wants are within your grasp at any moment, and criticize a person who likely does not have the means to feed themselves every day.

If you look at the Earth pragmatically, agriculture has caused the humanpopulation to grow explosively. Agriculture has made it possible for man to leave the way of the hunter & gatherer which unfortunately disrupts the natural balance.
Don't get me wrong agriculture is great, but for humans only. The paradox is that the more food we create, the more the human population will grow and the more our population keeps growing, the more food we will need (read: the more natural wildlife and Jungle is converted into farmland. Untill our planet is nothing but cities and Farmland.
By this time the biodiversity of our planet has been so diminished that nature is forced to push the reset button, or humanity will wipe itself out for having waged war over dwindling resources.

I am a S.A. Ranger , what we are talking about with hunting to letting animals survive has two main reasons that helps conserving nature because that is what Rangers do.
One is keeping populations on levels so that there is enough food for them to survive (we keep track of the food and water sources) , second is making money which is needed for the economy aswell for the reserves to survive, Hunters are tourists.
To give a example , Elephants knock down trees, that is good for some animals that cannot reach trees but its bad for the girafe who needs living trees to eat.
So to keep the Girafe alive we need to make sure we do not have to much elephants destroying trees, they willl have to be moved in some cases in other cases they will just get shot.
The only things which is not allowed is going in to reserves to illegally kill endangered animals which happens on a daily bases , at that point you will play with your lives as fellow Rangers will confront you and arrest you or worse.
But since ivory is worth more then gold per gram, there is a criminal syndicate that is running this business and coruption is wide spread.
I have never hunted in my live and have no intrest in it, we live in a time where some animals have been reduced since we have been counting populations from a couple of 100.0000 animals to a couple of hundred in the world.
The problem is the growing population and the fact that there is no controll, the rising population needs jobs , food and water , they need rescources.
Those resources are slinking and with that instability is arrising , look at South Africa.
And then you are surrounced by animals that are worth a lot, so you can imagine that protecting these animals from extinsion will become a war in the future.

Most of the money made from these trophy hunters does not go to help the local villages or communities nor does it go to help with conservation. It goes into the pockets of greedy people. The white rhino is now down to 2 and when they die that species will be extinct. So tell me again how trophy hunting helps? I understand that poaching also contributes to animal extinct but still why trophy hunt when it is known that poachers are contributing to the dwindling numbers of particular species. These animals have maintained a balance for all these centuries with the help of mother nature why would they need a human's help now?

Dereck and Beverly Joubert: When a male lion dies, his companion male (usually two or more males control and defend a pride of females) is left facing threats all alone. Incoming challengers, as in the start of The Last Lions, easily overwhelm the solitary male. So right there, we issue one lion license for hunting and the system suffers a loss of two. When new males take over a pride the first thing they try to do is dominate the female pride (the whole reason for all this) and their entire purpose for that is to mate and spread their genes. Functionally what has to happen to achieve that is to bring the females into estrous, and if they have suckling cubs the males have to kill those first. Old cubs from the dead male don’t make sense genetically either so they kill those. Prides average 8 females. Females average 4 cubs every 2 years. Depending on where we are in that two year cycle of breeding when the one male is hunted, and new males arrive, we could see 24 cubs killed, one older male (with a license attached) and another older male, and usually one female like Ma di Tau who resists and doesn’t make it. Death toll: round it down to 25 lions. Fees to government: for one male.

Take Cecile the lion. He had one partner in his coalition (what the bands of males are called. Can be large groups and the biggest documented have been 6, 7, and one of even 8 I think. The six were famous. They came into an area, killed dozens of other males, killed many many dozens of cubs and ate them. Didnt stop there. They also killed many females. This one group of male lions DECIMATED the lion population of the Sabi Sands and around that area and held it for YEARS. Eventually another group of 5 younger bigger males moved into the area. Two of the six split one of the five off from the rest and killed him. The remaining four brothers figured out what had happened and tracked down the two over a LONG distance, brutally attacked and killed one on the spot and injured and chased the second a long ways. The second found his other brothers and went back to the area to chase off the younger males. The younger ones found the one they chased, tagged him, and two of the four held him as the other two attacked the rest and chased the other males out. They came back and all of them again brutally killed the one that had helped kill their brother and ate him. Fast forward they injured and chased off the remaining older males all of whom died from either the injuries or starvation pretty quickly after. The new males ruled the area for years after and brought about a massive boom in cubs, expansion of territory, and safety for the females and cubs. Basically they fixed what the big group before them broke. The moral of the story, lions themselves will do what we are talking about here, managing the population and dealing with problems ect, but it took way too long and permanently eradicated some very long standing female lines from the area that had been extremely successful for years, but the original males came in, killed thier males, killed the cubs, and then killes too many of the females themselves for the familial pride to continue. We could have stopped that and protected the numbers but weren't allowed to and it will be many many years before the issue is anywhere near being resolved in a good positive way. Also, its all about genes. Tge strongest genes win most of the time. And that's what happened in my story above. Anyways. Long story but yea. They war and kill each other on "mass" levels at times but that coalition of males was just super violent and destructive and should have been removed before they damaged the system so badly that it will take 50 years to recover. And last, if we do it the illogical, "animal rights" leftist way, the people living on the ground and poachers will absolutely eradicate the hunted species in their area. Elephants, rhinos, lions, leopards, ect will be just absolutely destroyed and WILL, not may, absolutely 100% WILL be hunted to extinction in very short time. Probably years, not even decades. So y'all get what you deserve, which is the exact OPPOSITE outcome you claim to want, if we put you plans and desires into action. It's just infuriating to me because I LOVE these animals so much and have so much respect for them and know they are just absolutely beautiful and INCREDIBLY intelligent, aware, with very complex emotional and some times social intelligence like seen with wolves and elephants and orca. I know they are vastly more intelligent than either the VAST majority of people or even scientist give them credit for. How many babbies had the old bull prevented from being born just cause he was old, very experienced, and brutally violent. So what do you do in that situation? Just let him keep killing all these younger males that it kad taken YEARS AND YEARS for them to get to that point and then gone. He this one old pointless bull that can do nothing for the giraffe population, and is actually doing major harm to it, more important for some reason than the younger males? Id say he is far far less important taking all that into consideration and neede to be killed before doing even more damage. And was. Would these people have just let him keep killing all these younger males? Smh. Last, the younger male lions in my story were known as the majingilane male coalition, and the coalition that caused so much damage and they finally displaced was known as the mopogo male lion coalition.

"The only way to keep the balance of predators, is humans" is a profoundly ignorant & incorrect statement.
There are NUMEROUS ways that predator populations are kept balanced in wild ecosystems, such as:
1) Intra-species competition. In other words, wolves kill wolves, lions kill lions, etc.
2) Inter-species competition. Other predators, of different species, kill each other on the landscape.
3) Fecundity differences. Top predators typically have fewer offspring, and reproduce less often than other animals in the ecosystem.
4) Death by prey. Buffalo often kill lions, elk often kill wolves, etc. Hunting large prey is dangerous for the predators.
5+) Disease, Starvation, Infanticide, Injury, etc, etc , etc.
This is well documented in the research, and this information has been available for decades.
These guys just choose to ignore it, and consider their misguided opinions as "truth."

The conversation about trophy hunting is not this black and white, on either side. As usual, there are other solutions available, not just A causes B -> no trophy hunting equals poaching. When we talk about crops destroyed or lions multiplying, we have to also talk about loss of habitat. We are too many people and putting up palm oil plantations is taking out big portions of natural habitat. Farmers have to find new areas to cultivate. Also when you put a lot of predators and a lot of prey in smaller areas than what they are meant to naturally live in, of course there will be consequences.
Trophy hunting as an industry is not corruption free and some local communities do not benefit from it. There are reports from hard hit areas like Tanzania, where decline in elephant population has been vast, all elephant parts have been banned from commercial trade, however trophies fall outside commercial products listings. Also there are many varied measures taken in many local communities to protect their crops from elephants, f.ex. chilli/tobacco based deterrents. So if we want to talk about conservation/trophy hunting/poaching, let's talk about it as a whole, all the problems and solutions included and with neither side narrowing the solutions to fit 1 or 2 options.
Africa is not some helpless continent that needs a western saviour. There are great inventions and a great working population there. Maybe we ought to talk about how to properly pay them for their work and support their work and creativity in equal measures to ours.

Most of the animals killed for trophy hunting are large males (in the case of loins especially). When one of these ‘pride’ loin males is killed it has a huge effect on the social structure of the population with the new pride male which comes in killing many of the younger cubs. Yes trophy hunting may help the population growth, but it has to be done right and I don’t think selling the right to kill that animal to a fat rich American is the answer.

Although a fan of Joe, you really can't title and profess this to be the truth about trophy hunting" as it's a biased none evidence view, that does not include the huge corruption issue within hunting - as proven countless times and recently when yet another research collared elephant was shot by a hunter - such circumstances are clear violation of hunting ethics and legal practices and often involves bribed officials and local park staff.
You also do not include the vast amounts of evidence and practices of non-hunting areas and game reserves who do not permit hunting, yet still succeed. Your view that hunting MUST stay is void because quite clearly it's working. When there are too many animals such as lions and elephants as you state, then again it's proven that other non-hunting methods work, for example translocation.

In Africa there where as many as 3-5 million elephants in the early parts of the 20th century. Since then that number has dropped to 415,000. Just because you say Africa is a big continent doesn't mean that A) there are lots of elephants to fill it, in fact about half of Africa has elephant ranges in it (the lower part), and they are VERY small pockets. And B) 5,000 may not seem like a lot but in comparison to the amount in each family pocket. Plus the environmental impacts they have, not to mention the intellect of these animals. It's not right to even think about killing that amount and say its a necessary evil that Americans come in and give money to kill X amount to save them, that's just a bullshit excuse. To also say that "Yes elephants are going extinct in some places"...WHAT?...WHAT?...No Joe, Elephants, the species, NOT A pocket of them, the species is going extinct. You can't say "birds are going extinct", because that takes into consideration the entire species, but when you say the 'Kakapo' is going extinct you are specifying a species of bird. What I am trying to say is that elephants as a species are going extinct, there may be different elephants, but they are all going extinct.
I don't mind if you are hunting to control a population (like rabbits). Or to hunt for food if you are going to kill to eat the whole animal. But to kill for just the thrill and a trophy, it's barbaric

I primarily hunt whitetails and I always laugh at those outdoors shows where the "hunter" only shoots 200+" whitetails, but he's "hunting" for 10 minutes on a game farm and only cares about the rack... that to me is pretty pathetic, not to mention unrealistic unless you have money...
But the other side of the spectrum are the hunters who shoot everything that walks by... that's not good for the wildlife either, nor is it sustainable for your freezer...
There's gotta be a middle ground... when you can shoot a doe and a buck with your license, and then the state gives you a bonus doe tag for $10, and you can get one bonus tag per day, that destroys the deer population. Anytime these 2 get talking about wildlife and ecological issues, it's absurd to see the worth "truth" posted in the video title.
Hunting can absolutely play a role in certain conservation strategies, but hunting is not "the only thing protecting animals", neither in the US nor in Africa. Ecotourism is enormously valuable to conservation, as is our ever expanding understanding of natural ecological processes and their importance to human health and economics.
And in regard to predator ecology, these 2 seem to lack even the most basic understanding of how predators function in an ecosystem. Predators are essentially self-regulating, with higher population densities of predators most often driving the predators to either disperse to other areas, or kill each other due to competition. I challenge you to find an instance where predators have wiped out a species in an ecosystem (not including non-native predators that have been unnaturally introduced to an area.)
The healthiest ecosystems on the planet are not those where humans control the predator populations, but rather the ecosystems that we are least influential in.
For the amount that JRE discusses wildlife and conservation topics, it would be worth having someone on who actually knows what they're talking about, rather than this continued dissemination of misinformation promoted as "truth".

A poacher is going to poach no matter what, because their tusks fetch a fortune because of China. Having the legal hunts provide insanely amounts of money to fund anti poaching task forces. So it's the dilemma of take 1 to save 100 or so. And conversation is all about the numbers. And poachers take a lot more than the legal hunts do. So stuff sucks. What even sucks more these organizations that are against these legal trophy hunters focus on these issues because it's easier to get funds for their organizations, even tho in their own backyard there's more pressing concerns.

I LOVE these animals so much and have so much respect for them and know they are just absolutely beautiful and INCREDIBLY intelligent, aware, with very complex emotional and some times social intelligence like seen with wolves and elephants and orca. He this one old pointless bull that can do nothing for the giraffe population, and is actually doing major harm to it, more important for some reason than the younger males? Conservation efforts have been working/failing in Africa since the late 1800’s, not the past 20 or 40 years. Americans should be disqualified from this conversation based solely on the decimation of bison, whales, salmon, otters, beaver, eagles and owls. Americans need to learn how to manage their own issues at home and quit ‘fixing’ the world at large. All they do is eff it up.
