I noticed you mentioned George Hurrell's pictures as examples of pancake makeup used to make stars look flawless, but a curious fun fact is that Hurrell actually hated make up on his models! It could emphasize skin flaws under the lights he used, creating more work in the darkroom, or make faces too flat. Instead, he asked models to arrive without any make up (except eyeshadow and lipstick), and their skin was painstakingly transformed by retouching the original negatives to remove blemishes, wrinkles, and freckles and softening shadows and highlights.
That pancake makeup looks amazing, so skin-like! Are u going to do this for other decades? I love how authentic u r, not diluted at all. Also love all the history, facts and images u put in. Very informative, thank u!
Thank you so much! I’m so glad you’re enjoying all the aspects of the videos! We are planning on doing more tutorials for the other decades, yes! Stay tuned! Thank you for watching! ❤️❤️
I was train by a lady from the BBC and she taught me how to use a cake block which could be used as a liner and mascara. I learnt to apply it with a flat or fan brush which to this day I still do. I do not use the wond often I find the brush you have more control
I just found this channel oh my goodness how I wish I would of sooo much sooner you are amazing !!! Definitely my new favorite channel. I love how authentic, informative and all of the above . Are you going to do all the generations ? Is the sea sponge critical? I love your presence on camera ,the beautifulness of your character is captivating THANK YOU !!!!!!
Thank you so much for your kind words! Much appreciated! We’ve done the 20s-80s makeup tutorials here on our channel so I hope you enjoy those! I haven’t experimented with other ways to apply the pancake makeup so I’m not sure how critical the sea sponge is, to be honest. I think a damp Beauty Blender or wedge sponge might work but not sure. Thank you again for watching and commenting and welcome!
There are many gorgeous colorized images of Jean Harlow, Greta Garbo, and other classic movie stars, where you can really see the beauty of the 1930's look. Victor Mascaro is one of the best, and I always use his extraordinary work as reference point. This is a really lovely makeup tutorial.
Omy how wonderful this tutorial was! I'm actually wanting some of these pancake foundations and powder! Her face looked so perfect afterwards! And just the luxuriousness of it all.
Thank you so much! I’m so glad you enjoyed it! I hope you get to try out the pancake makeup and see how it works for you. The finish really is so lovely!
Sara does have lovely skin! She's an esthetician so she knows her stuff. I always try to be as safe and sanitary as possible! Thank you for watching and commenting!
In the early 1970’s I had the pleasure of working with a Max Factor make-up artist who recreated a late 1920’s look for me for a photo shoot. He used the palest shade of pancake and blue eyeshadow with very dramatic false lashes. It was fascinating and so much fun. The look you have created is quite similar and just as glamorous (if not more)!
Oh wow that is such a cool story!! I love it! Glad the look I've created here is similar. Do you have pictures of the look he did on you? Thank you for sharing your story and watching!
Absolutely love these vintage tutorials, such a fascinating access point into the history and sociology of the time period. I think we're going to see that high 30s blush placement make a comeback soon since it's the trend in kbeauty/Asian beauty right now and there is so much trickle down (trickle over?) from their beauty culture to ours, e.g. the glass skin trend. So glad I found your channel! Now back to binging your older content...
Thank you! So glad you're enjoying them! I hope you enjoy the older content as well. Someone else mentioned the that the high blush is a trend in K Beauty/Asian Beauty as well, which I admittedly do not know a lot about (although I did visit Seoul last year and don't remember seeing high blush as as a trend, but a lot can change in a year.)
@@MyVintageLove hello :) about this high blush and "Asian beauty" it was a trend in Japan few years ago called "igari", or "drunk/hangover make-up". It's inspired by the flush Asian people get when they drink, or when they get sick, it's a natural thing. This make-up style is supposed to look cutesy and innocent. That was 2018, a few years back the blush would go higher on the cheekbones, right beneath the eye, also mimicking the flushed and cutesy look. And it was A THING, that's how I could spot Japanese tourists and exchange students at my university, the blush was right where us Europeans would put concealer and highlight. It was a shock for some girls when I told them it's not a thing here, as we don't have that flush, at least not in this area of the face 😅
Awesome! I hope you get the chance to rock the heck out of this look in 2021! Yep, 1940's next. Just gonna work our way through the decades. (Well, actually, there will be a totally different tutorial before the 40s, but we'll get to the 40s!)
I really enjoyed this I love that each person you chose has a different face shape for the decade cut to me in the mirror trying to work out my best decade hehe
Great video as always! I like that inner corner dot trick - it makes the eyes look a little more cat-eye, in the black and white especially. And oh my do I need that eyelid shield! Where has that been all my life?!
Thanks so much for watching! I love that inner corner do trick too- it does look really amazing in black and white! The eyelid shield is a game changer for sure!
Ahh that explains why I could never find any suitable color foundation for me when I was young. I’m olive undertone. Mercifully my skin was clear most of the time.
Thank you so much for this tutorial!! I'm just starting to get into the 1930's style and this tutorial has definitely made me want to continue on learning more. Love your videos!!
Modern liquid foundation doesn’t work for me. I was thinking about trying pancake makeup! Now I think I’ll give it a try! I’m well aware that this will be work to put on, but it will give me much needed me time in the day!
The rouge close to the eyes is already a thing now too, right? It's mostly associated with K-Beauty and E girls and shoujo manga styles. I agree, it's very pretty! :D
I feel like blush is one of those things people are real quick to make judgements on still nowadays. Crazy eye makeup? Well, that’s just her style. Blush in the wrong location? Wtf, you don’t know how to apply blush! Weird.....
@@MyVintageLove It’s been that way for quite a while, I feel! As a result, I never got into wearing blush. Always felt no matter where, how or what color I put down, it always felt wrong somehow. So I just eventually went: awfuckit, no blush then I have freckles, so there’s already “something” happening on my cheeks anyways
@@themurrrr Have you tried different types of blush- powder, cream, liquid, etc? Different brushes? Not every product is for everyone, so it sounds like blush isn't your thing.
You made her eyebrow angle too sharp. 30s were much rounder, or the arch was a little less smooth flowing and more of sudden change in angle. That streamline angle of the arch is more 50s… to me

Ah! Good to know! I think I remember reading that in one of my books on Hurrell. Sometimes the facts get mixed up in my brain!

I’m really surprised you didn’t use a Besame lipstick. After that’s who they are
I used Besame lipsticks on both my 40s videos and numerous IG Reels.

Where is Sara's accent from? Beautiful makeup! I wish they made pancake makeup pale enough for me haha
Sara is from Florida. :) They do make super pale pancake makeup!
how you comb your hair. I would like a tutorial about your hair
Thank you! There is a hair setting and brush out tutorial here on my channel. Hope it helps!
Could you apply cream products on pancake makeup before you powder ? Just wondering
Hmmm I’m not sure, tbh. I haven’t tried that yet. I’m not sure how the pancake makeup would respond to a cream product on top.
I feel like blush is one of those things people are real quick to make judgements on still nowadays.

Very true! Glad you enjoyed the video!
Your friend looks a little like Miriam Hopkins.
I honestly had a to look up who that is, but you’re right she does!
