Yeah I second this, should release a course (would be happy to pay) of like a training regimen with drills in order to improve. Would defs help with consistency.
100% I met some people through the Tekken Reddit that ended up becoming lowkey my coaches and whenever I was struggling with something they'd have me run drills it's one thing to know you have to punish things, but it's a whole 'nother thing to actually get used to doing it they had me set up Kazuya to do a bunch of different things and rotate between which were active so I could get used to reacting to common moves and knowing which string to punish them It was apparently extremely effective training because I now usually ultra instinct block helicopters on reaction lol Definitely pick one or two characters you struggle with, find their common moves, and find which punishes to use as a general rule, especially as a beginner just stick to a basic 10f punish, 15f launcher, crouching 11f, and crouching launcher. The game will throw all kinds of different specific strings like 12f's and 13f's, but you can get by just fine by using only the basics. Sorry to ramble there, I was just kinda excited to talk about the topic lol
@@NyxDiscordia33Nothing to appologize for, took me 4 weeks to finally figure out how to practice. In SF6 i have prerecorded actions on almost every character to run drills, but in T8 i had no idea of how to set up drills.
A neat little tip to make it more obvious if you hit the whiff punish or not (useful for stage 1 especially): When you're recording your opponents move, hold back for a short moment after doing the move. That way the recording will actually block if your whiff punish comes out late, giving you better feedback than the little yellow "punish" in the bottom left.
I feel this is the BIG benefit to using the record function over selecting df2 / df4 from the movelist. It can also let you turn off the move properties boxes if you want, which as Phi has said in past videos, makes it as close to a real match visually as possible.
@@NemSumeragiNeutral block doesn't work if your character is in an animation, so if you want to make sure you're blocking as quickly as possible, always hold back.
I think for level one, sure but like Phidx did, he said try not to record extra movements so it won't affect the timing. Especially level 3 when the interval is short. The back button will give more time and backdash on level 3. I think seeing the punish is good enough tho
You’re actually the goat at teaching Tekken. I’ve played fighting games on and off since I was a kid (I’m 30 rn) and this is the first time I feel like I have enough linear growth and recourses to stick with a game long term. I’m still pretty bad but I feel constant growth with your help. Thanks
this is my first fg other than trying sf6 (I turned 30 in december) and I 100% agree the process for learning these games is made so much easier with content creators like PhiiDx. I'm almost to red ranks on two characters after some short ranked sessions! Keep grindin
I LOVE these drill videos ! Level 5 : add a mid-high string that reaches far enough, like Azucena's f+44, that you have to duck and punish Level 6 : some options can come with an initial forward dash, for exemple record all Jun's options like level 4, but add another one : forward dash df+2. That way you train not to press your whiff punisher every time she does df+2, you have to whiff punish it or block punish it depending on the situation.
Now that's what I like to see... intermediate and advanced topics/knowledge are hard to find and obtain. Now that you've covered the basic subjects such as punishment, frame data, frame traps etc. Now's the perfect time for average/intermediate players to level up their game and game sense through your intermediate/advanced guides. I really like the direction this channel is going. Keep up the good work Phidx 👏
Thank you for all this beginner content. Getting started in T8 was a bit rough coming from SF but you are doing one hell of a job and it makes a huge difference for Tekken newcomers.
Learned to duck dragunov b4,3 and laws 4,3,4 and a bunch of other stuff. And it worked in a real match, best feeling ever. Cant wait to learn with this drill. Great video again, thx!
Really good video on the building blocks of labbing certain skills. Not everyone knows where to start when wanting to work on things like whiff punishing and block punishing consistently. Awesome video!
i must say that this drill elevated my electrics by a ton. i was struggling with landing them in a match and after practicing whif punishing with it im much more consitent. Thanks!
Love this drill. It's dope as a new player who's been maining Kazuya since it also serves as good electric practice since that's a good punish for these moves.
Bro your drills helped me break through a ranks plaeau since months. Jusr watching my brain change and reactions gettinf better is an insane feeling. Thank you so much!👊
Just got a copy of T8 and these drills and intermediate videos have been wonderful. Thanks Phi! I have much to learn but holy moley you are making it fun af
Love your videos man! Definitely the best Tekken streamer, these drills are really helping me. To lab this against other characters is it best to set them to do a similiar homing move like Jun’s df3 & then a launcher to be the move to try whiff punish?
I understand that you probably receive messages like this frequently, but I wanted to express my gratitude for the valuable content you create on both Twitch and UA-cam. Thanks to your videos, I was able to achieve a red rank in Tekken 8, which is remarkable considering that I hadn't played Tekken in over a decade. Once again, thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise with your viewers. 0:03
Man, thank you for these videos. As someone whose entry into the Tekken world is Tekken 8, I felt overwhelmed and almost paralyzed by all the things I need to learn, and almost considered dropping Tekken because of how overwhelming it felt. These videos have helped immensely and I am constantly feeling and seeing improvements in my gameplay. I also appreciate you how break it down to the simplest terms and show everything step by step so we can replicate these conditions to learn.
I was just thinking "hey, my whiff punishment is abysmal, I should work on that", nice timing lol Thanks so much for the drills! The one for throw breaks is already showing results
Hey Phi! Just wanted to say I'm new to Tekken (og mvc2 player), and your guides have been helping me level up so quickly. Just wanted to say thanks and keep them coming!
YESSIRRRR, I knew you'd drop a whiff punish guide sooner or later! was trying to figure out drills on how to work on my electric punish. Thank you bro!
Did this drill first time a few days ago and couldn't figure out why I couldn't get the punish on her df2 in lvl 2. Training rn and things are def easier. Made it to level 3 with not many mistakes. You're the 🐐 for sharing these drills bro
I love every video you do that has a drill. Sometimes I want to put some more time into Tekken, but I want to put effective learning time in and not just mess about but in not sure what to work on.
For some reason doing the first 2 levels of the drill for a while helped me break some mental block with *throw breaks* of all things. I've still been struggling to actually properly whiff punish or look for whiff punishes in actual matches, but something about the drill helped me with looking at my opponent more in a way that's translated to getting more throw breaks (which I was so bad at that I had a D rating in the skill on the player stats before today)
Awesome guide. I like these practice methods and you talking about muscle memory and how people learn it from taking breaks and when you're not playing. So it means I don't get too frustrated and keep a more positive approach when learning. I've saw myself improving on a daily basis. Is there a guide for learning how to react to block low and punishing lows or how to train yourself to get into the rhythm of doing both? It's one issue where I struggle and I'm looking for a guide like that.
Got NostraDX over here, i was literally telling my friend last night that PhiDX prolly has a whiff punishment guide, and 2hrs later this vid drops. Bless
You can also record a full real frame trap situation that allows backdash with tight timing. Jin, Hwoarang plus on block mid string for example and then their usual followups and try to make those whiff. Or the Dragunov stance mid kick + df1 for example. Backdash between them and whiff punish.
Can you do a vid about mental traps/bad habits? I.e. constantly low guarding because you THINK they're going to do a low, or constant flowcharting, constant highs. It's probably more a high-level play video tbh. It's difficult for people to see things like that in their own gameplay.
PhiDX never ceases to surprise me with how well he is able to find ways for others to improve their play/game knowledge. You’re a training mode master sir, and sharing it all with the worlds is a great service 🙏

Awesome video as always brother! Just one thing : Can you do a video of how to do Dragunov’s fff2 with blue sparks ? I play with arcade stick too but I have tried 1000 Times and get none, I cant imput the double forward fast enough 🙃 any tips ?
I tried it and had to do an intermediate level between 4 and 5 with only df2 and df4. Just responding to both of those things properly seems overwhelming. Dash df3 on top is just too much for now. But I'll do it again for sure. Hope I'll get better in time. Looks like my mental stack capacity is around zero right now. Whiff punishment is something I struggle with greatly as it is, but I also happened to choose a Mishima as my main, so I have to do it with the electric or at least a wgf. And my ewgf is pretty slow, as you can imagine, so I have to react quicker to do the input in time and not screw it up.
Phi, please let me know if this is in the game by design. If you are tapping back to block(and then dash), while in recovery, you have a good chance of getting hit after you recover. YOU MUST HOLD BACK TO BLOCK WHILE IN RECOVERY. It's my first Tekken so I just thought "oh i'll mash back cuz then after recovery i'll just start dashing!"... Big mistake. The buffer window to activate block at the end of recovery must be very small. Therefore if you are mashing back(no matter how fast) you will have a chance to get hit when you could have blocked. I tested this by setting opponent to use heat engager then run up on me while I mash back during recovery. You get hit alot lol Idk if this was just my mistake of if other noobs have been trying to tap for dash during recovery (knowing that dash blocks it seems like the best of both worlds!)
I'd love a vid that show us how to know when to go for a whiff punish and when to wait out a string. I find that my natural reaction to seeing a move whiff is to whiff punish, but I more often than not get blown up by the next move of the string.
I saw some good players say that drills aren't very effective. I'll have to try and see if it improves my game in actual matches against other characters
Whats the block punishment I should do with Victor for the kick? I'm getting the hang of the timing I just don't know which attack to use. This is my first tekken game
Should I only use Jun for this practice or should I find other moves in different characters kits to practice with as well? Like wouldn't practicing with Reina be a solid move as she's the most popular character atm?
Love your video, but have a request. I am usually on the opposite end of this spectrum, whiffing moves hard. Do you have any spacing exercises Drills? In 2D FGs I am very confident in my ranges and spacing. I use a drill where I purposefully whiff my moves, so that I am aware exactly wheres its tip is. Then I proceed to practice very carefully just hitting with that tip 😉. Anyway, For tekken 8 this has not helped me as it does in 2Ds, and I think it may be due to the camera angles. Any pointers?
How come you’re not KBDing in this exercise? I typically do it as my default backdash. Maybe another level for that is to more actively adjust your spacing with various movements?
I'm new to Tekken and I got in the habit of mashing back instead of holding it to block while stunned. I think that is causing gaps in my defense. I think that if you mash it, you risk the chance of block not being activated once your character is able to block again.
4:04 I hope future ashpengu got the message. Jokes aside, once again 9:40 is super key. Repetition is king for almost any physical skill. If any of y'all can even think back to learning to write in school: remember doing row after row of "Aa Aa Aa Aa Aa Aa" for every letter? You already knew what the letter A looked like. But knowing and doing are two halfs of the same coin. (This is the part where everyone misses the point and tells me how bad their handwriting is in the replies. I know because my handwriting is also terrible. I guess we didn't do enough lines of our Aa Bb Cc's.)
This drill is seems easier with Bryan since the punish and launch is the same move. Does Jun have a good -13 move try to spice up the drill so it's not just Jet Upper after Jet Upper?
Any general tips for duck punishing/launching? Right now I'm in Mighty Ruler and whenever I have to deal with characters with heavy string attacks like Reina/Azucena etc I'm just kind of stand blocking because it's really hard to find an opening to duck and punish. By the time the string is done like half my health is gone especially if they're in heat mode. The strategy I see is that they immediately use heat engage and go into their string and it's super annoying just bum rushing me down.
Really love the fact that you show drills, sometimes the issue isn't knowing a skill it's not knowing how to start developing it
Yeah I second this, should release a course (would be happy to pay) of like a training regimen with drills in order to improve. Would defs help with consistency.

they had me set up Kazuya to do a bunch of different things and rotate between which were active so I could get used to reacting to common moves and knowing which string to punish them
It was apparently extremely effective training because I now usually ultra instinct block helicopters on reaction lol

This the drill I’ve been waiting for can’t wait to try it after work
Funny enough, this gave me a simple idea how to train blocking lows :v
Thanks for the drill!
This is so good to come back to
PHI! YOU ARE AT 55K!! YOU WILL BREAK 100K BEFORE THE YEAR EVEN ENDS! PROUD OF YOU!
man thanks for this video! I use Reina and I never get the chance to use EWGF correctly, these drills will greatly help. Love your vids!
Awesome idea. I'll try this tonight.
Exactly what I needed. Love ur content man
Another solid video as usual! This will help so many people. Keep it up!
Thanks for this idea.
Always great videos
Phi out here again making the best Tekken content, keep it up!
You’re knowledge on this game is very helpful to beginners thanks
Hey Phi, I love the drill videos. Is there any chance you're gonna make a defense video? I can't block lows, snake edges, and how to turtle in general.
AMAZING! SS Duck drill next?
Fantastic guides as always.

Thank you for the vid phidx always love to see it
The throw breaking exercise has been huge for me.

I'd love a vid that show us how to know when to go for a whiff punish and when to wait out a string. I find that my natural reaction to seeing a move whiff is to whiff punish, but I more often than not get blown up by the next move of the string.
The answer is simple but difficult to execute. Either whiff punish faster, or wait out the string 😅
Phi has been cooking lately ngl
Your videos feel like paid for coaching thank you for posting these vids
very good for getting back dash electric down
Does PhiDX have a channel for vods/highlights of him playing?
Yeah check my channel description
I spent 20 minutes on Level 4 and yeah, very nice and effective!
Nice lil Sunday morning gift. 🤗
At the end you talk about "not over spacing". I'm confused, if you're just spamming normal backdash, how do you control distance for this drill?
Please do more of this content. I'd love to just get more labs for fundamentals as well as labs for characters like King, Nina, Drag, etc.
Also, you should really link to your other tutorials when you mentions them, eg: KBD.
Good idea!
I saw some good players say that drills aren't very effective. I'll have to try and see if it improves my game in actual matches against other characters
great idea thx

Then I proceed to practice very carefully just hitting with that tip 😉. Anyway, For tekken 8 this has not helped me as it does in 2Ds, and I think it may be due to the camera angles. Any pointers?
Being able to space your whiff punishment (in this drill) will also help you whiff less
@@PhiDX alright thx!
How come you’re not KBDing in this exercise? I typically do it as my default backdash. Maybe another level for that is to more actively adjust your spacing with various movements?
Noob question.. does whiffing have more negative frames than on-block? Is it possible to show negative frames when whiffing in the practice mode?
I’m gonna try this today.
In general, should you mostly keep your eyes on your opponent rather than your own character?
Yeah
yeah we need quick record in this game asap
Think after I get past stage 4 I'll also set 2 commands to run up throw to add another layer of defense
Great idea, and a reactable low would be great too
Usually when i see someone backdashing aggressively i become hyper aware of whiffing, this works great on people who cant help but autopilot though.
You have to know the strings coming
Phi looking to take SK's "best coach in the biz" title this game around
How do you set this drill with a different training dummy? For example you wanna practice whiff punishing kazuya
You cooked on this one a great way to practice electrics also some characters have better whiff punishments like Lee have some levels easier.
