Thank you PhiDX for a sidestep guide that does not end in "you develop a habit for it when you play long enough". Your videos helped me from stuck in warrior to finally grinding in purple rank. I'll try to include sidesteps into my gameplay that are not just random so hopefully there is a way to develop that habit.
@@BUGDAYLIEKMEK-ms1pc I can recommend Anakin's channel. Also some charakter guides for your main will help. For example, I main Law so i also watch Lambkin's videos for that.
I wish this stuff was around when i was playing Tekken 1-3 lol i feel i was really good at it back then, but now watching some of these videos its like man i knew nothing. Like you said, it was all based on Feel.
@@hang1893 you probably were good compared to your small circle of friends. I think a lot of us experienced the same thing if we were not in a city where you could actually go to an arcade and fight people who are good at the game.
It’s all relative. Use frame data wasn’t a thing until SF4 on PC. Before then, you would have to take notes on characters, controlling the 2p side with a friend or sibling and experiment. Either that or you would simply rely on feel and technique as you mentioned. But as initially stated, it’s relative. So if you didn’t have frame data, then your opponent didn’t either, so any deep knowledge on the game wasn’t available.
I stumbled upon this channel not long ago and the quality of the content and guides have been so helpful that I become conflicted when I consider pursuing a coaching session from individuals capable of doing so- as they truly value their time. It's made the learning process more approachable (I consider myself intermediate) when you make it so easy to digest and palatable. I have a hard time with the discipline of doing drills and just genuinely entering practice mode at all unless unironically I'm queued for matches and that's just where the game makes you sit before you find opponents. The replay feature also has sort of come in clutch for someone lazy like myself because I can just take control of the character's and squander the benefit I'd receive from learning how to set up the situations that get me cooked or if I want to optimize a conversion that propagated from an opportunistic response, it's a paradoxical godsend. That said, I'm very grateful for you and other content creators who drop gems like these and willfully distribute such valuable insight. It is truly appreciated as I navigate the amalgams of concepts and skills that embody tekken, my beloved hobby. TL;DR Thank you PhiDX, & Algorithm- do ya thang!
That was awesome and i applied it today in ranked (a little labbing first) and saw some success with it. I didn’t overuse it, just used it as another tool to add a little more variety to my game and i had a good time. Really appreciate your teaching approach and labbing advice! Thank you!
One thing to remember is that many pokes have different length recovery animations. Sidestep can be buffered, but for some moves, you need to input the step later as their stun animation is so long. Go to practice mode, set bot to block and set bot to punish with jab. Now you can test all your pokes and step after it was blocked to find optimal step timing. Same practice helps with your pushback moves and backdash. Backdash can’t be fully buffered so it needs even more timing practice to be perfect. In both cases block and confirm and then whiff punish. It’s a good way to learn whiff punish on reaction. And keep grinding to get better when waiting for games. T8 has full lab mode when waiting.
I’ve been playing tekken for a long time now, and sidestepping has for the majority of my life been fully left up to my intuition. It’s always good to go back and listen to the actual science behind it, and get a refresher course on the RPS game that you are forcing. I also never knew about the -5 rule either. Good shit
this really cleared things up. ss evasion window ending when youre too plus wasnt something I even considered. I had also heard to increase your odds is to input your ss as close to their attack button input as possible since attacks apparently stop their assigned tracking once you press attack and not directional inputs. great video
I would LOVE to see a video about the fundamentals about oki options, when to get up, roll to the side, atack while getting up, etc, I feel like my disadvantage stage can improve greatly by choosing the correct option while on the ground.
Sounds like it is in planning, but one topic i struggle with and rarely see covered is how to sidewalk stuff like drag or claudio wr2 without getting blown up by slight deviations in timing, aswell as how to determine when a move is not linear enough for that to be worth even attempting (like new mishima ff2) or when its skill issue and you should keep trying.
To know if a move is reasonable to step - you set the dummy to do it in practice mode, experiment with when the best time to step the move is then see if you can reliably step the bot doing it on predictable timing. To beat slight deviations in timing you guess either on intuition or by making mental notes when the opponent has: immediate, slight delayed and delayed timing and calling them out if they are predictable. Also worth remembering that if they have delayed timing that is an attack window for you and Tekken 8 would rather you just do your running attack 😅
i recently watched a video on small tekken and it basically had this whole thing has the basis for an offensive game. small pokes into sidesteps, to try and open your opponent. i feel this is coming at a good time in my development. ive reached purple with victor, but am facing blues that know how to punish everything that got me to where i am 😆. i knew i needed to play safer, i just didnt know what that was. now i do. thanks as always phi.
It would be really interesting and intuitive if depending on which side you stepped the side your opponent chooses to throw an attack would determine whether it catches you or not. Example: You side step right (towards the camera), your opponent picks an attack that uses either their left punch or left kick and that would catch you. But if you side step left the opponent’s attack would miss (almost like rolling with the attack). Although there are probably moves that break this rule (I’m not sure). It would probably make sidestepping easier to figure out in the moment though instead of having to lab each scenario.
Just started implementing this after stagnating in Purple ranks, the key point I found useful is the step, block and watch technique you mention. It felt great getting launches from a sidestep! blue ranks here I come!
All your educational content is great man. Been playing casual for years and T8 is my first playing online. Your videos have helped alot with understanding the game. Thank you and keep rocking it man.
You definitely changed the way I play Tekken. Thanks for your teachings coz they’re explained well even though I mainly play by feel - the principles make more sense. Jin main here by the way.
Bout time someone talked about offensive ss. It's literally the answer to like 8/10 of the panic options in Tekken including the high power crushes that everyone hates. For some reason newer or less experienced players assume offensive side step is "giving up" pressure instead of using it as another form of pressure. And even when I use it against them to dismantle them they still usually don't incorporate it even though it's pretty simple
It took me a while to realize and get good at it but yeah I used to think exactly that; like they gave up or are getting desperate to win so start playing overly passive; I flipped the script and realized I was being over aggressive. Since I've toned down and and started concentration on block punish and whiff punish and side stepping I've been doing much better and finally broke out of garyu to mighty ruler; I've also taken PhiDX advice on rank and not worrying about rank once I stopped concentrating on rank I started concentrating far more but on what can I do to get better lol

This is what I've been looking forward to learning about. Most of my scraps are very linear back and forth exchanges and it would be nice to deviate from that more. I never really know when it's safe to step so the bit about what frame advantage/disadvantage works was nice to see.

Hopefully the knowledge from this video will speed up that process in the future, what would we do without Phi.
Throws is another good option to counter sidestepping and comes out faster than most homing moves. If they autopilot the side step to attack, the throw break window becomes even smaller. Gotta be ready to break them or use them.

Really good video including the TL;DW option.
I'm always looking forward to your indept tutorial how to play tekken, thank you very much phi
Hey phi thanks for reaching me so much; I haven’t been able to play for a long time and watching ur content is fun and engaging; you’re awesome man don’t forget it.

Thank you Phi you are helping me a lot in this game
These videos are amazing! Thanks for your work, man!
PhiDX teaching me all this stuff that I'll immediately do wrong, I love it. I'll learn eventually.
Y’all need to subscribe to this man. This is SUCH good info.
10/10 video.
Another good thing about offensive stepping that i don't think you mentioned is that its a good tool to change your offensive timing while not giving away your momentum too much in comparison to backing up.
Idk why youtube is reading my mind, literally said to myself in my head not out loud imma look up side step tutorials today and now this is on my feed lol
I definitely needed this. I got demolished offline by somebody who knew exactly when to sidestep. This video just gave me a better understanding of their mindset
