This is how you diagnose a problem properly, people just don't get it and keep replacing parts. Excellent job brother.

Thank you so very much. You saved me with this video. I took my van to a repair shop. He changed the ignition switch and didn’t solve the problem and then he told me maybe in the fuel pump but the tank was full. He said it’s too heavy he can’t drop it Till it’s empty I was calling junkyard around to junk the van. I came across this video and sure enough I looked under my van and it has the same problem with the ground strap I bought one off of Amazon for $ 7.99 and replaced it in the van good as new thank you again. You are the man.

This video helped me solve my issue! Thanks!!
I have a 2007 Chevy Express 3500 Passenger Van. It would not start and found there was no fuel in the high pressure line at the engine, after checking the fuse and relay for the fuel pump which were good.
I was looking for a video on how to test the electrical line to the fuel pump and found this video. The flex/mesh ground cable described in the video was badly corroded on my van at both end. Took very little effort to break completely.
I ran a wire from the the driver side frame as shown in the video to the negative terminal on the battery...the van started immediately. Bought an aftermarket black/ground cable from AutoZone and connected it from the engine block to the frame to replace the broken one at the same connection points.

Good morning James. I watched and commented on this video about a year ago. Today I watched again and was able to reinforce some of the things I learned in the first time I watched. Thank you. I was going to buy a new fuel pump. After crawling under the van I decided to pay to have it replaced. I watched your video and found a ground strap was off. Reinstalled it and the van fired right up. You saved me around 800 bucks.

Nice find there bro ham. I'm sure you already know this but the dim power on your light was from voltage being high on the frame while other circuit were active. Also the dim power you see on the control side of the relay (computer wire) is a bias voltage gm uses. It's super weak and would not show at all on a conventional light.
hey, I have a tripod for you. One of my students just gave me one today. I'll give you my old one.

Holy shit!! You just literally save me hundreds of dollars. Thank you brother. I ran the battery down trying different things. I was watching the video while waiting for my wife’s car to jump start the battery, still wouldn’t start ...then i saw the end of the video and I took the jumper cables off my wife’s car and connected the ground side to the frame, bam! Started right up! I was stranded so I drove it home like that. So
2002 Chevy express van quick fix if you are stranded! Run the jumper cables to your frame, negative/ black side only of course. Although.. I took the positive jumper off the battery and connected it to the fender ground and the other end to the frame as well to have 2 temporary separate grounds with no tools used. So badass

You have no idea how much this sucks. I went through this today spending hours chasing down starting problems with an 08 Express van and it was this problem. NOW, I see your video.

Was this the ground from the battery to the trans that was broke? Is there 1 for the fuel pump? I get power the terminal of the fuse for the fuel pump. I don't get no power to the fuse when checked with a test light. Only the terminal under the fuse? Relay is clicking.

+James Danner Thanks very much, i will give the grounds a look right now, but i think i am having security system issues(i have no clue how to bypass the security lockout yet, if there is one happening). i had fuel pressure, and spark, i saw spark leaking everywhere! so gave it a tune up and replaced the ignition coil as well, it would want to start but would rev up a little and die right away, now and again or nothing at all, just turning over and nothing. so i looked into an electrical plug in the steering column (for the security thing with 3 wires connected to the ignition, it seems to be free of corrosion). now i have no fuel pressure and the fuel gauge is flicking back en fourth every couple seconds.(no clicking at the relays either, so i assume there will be no power when i test them next) im at a loss and depending on UA-cam for ideas... any suggestions would be great! thanks again

Im having an unsolvable security lockout problem, the radio says "LOC" I've tried to relearn the passlock system a few times, ive done as fallows.
step 1: Crank the engine let go of the key, leave the ignition on run for ten minutes..
step 2: turn the ignition off for ten seconds, then turn key on run(do not crank), wait ten minutes..
step 3: repeat step two twice(total key on run 3 times for ten minutes)..
then come back and try to start...... and still no change.

@Langlois-entreprise762 u could just run an extra redundant ground if u can't find the source. The oe negative battery cable goes to body and engine with another braided leg that goes to the frame. There is a harness ground that hits body under driver's frame rail near a body mount. Sometimes ill just get jumper cables and hook to battery negative and take the other back end and clamp to engine then body then frame to see which one completes the missing circuit to help pinpoint. I'm not sure which body ground u are messing with tho

This particular fuel pump relay circuit is exactly the type(power side switched) that you would never, under any circumstances want to short to ground with the driver on as Paul would say. Cough Cough, Paul you reading this? haha. A ground that is wacky or acting goofy simple needs a better ground provided to it(running a jumper wire from battery negative to the ground in question) Now the fuel pump kicks on, bam, you are done(not with the repair, just the diagnoses) I do this with the coil side of relays too. Love bypassing things, makes me feel like a mad science. There is one thing for certain, I am no scientist, lol. Awesome video James, your local weather station could use your gnarly beard to tell their viewers which direction the wind is blowing from.

Ground problems can be a bitch. A lot peaple seam to get hung up chasing wires without looking at the ground points in the system. Great video that will help with lots of problems.

Nice diagnosis. I guess that test light does do more than just make noise. Interesting, that GM uses a DT relay for the fuel pump, and 87a is simply fused? Why so?

we had that exact same problem at our shop. when the van was up in air, van would run. lower the van and the van would shut off. we figured some thing was losing signal when suspension was being lifted up and down. sure enough we looked under van and the braided ground strap was hanging together by a couple of strands

I'm 99.9 percent sure this is the issue I am having, same diagnosis of everything. I'm going to try the reroute of the ground like you did to see if the start. Cause my main one was also frayed an super brittle soon as I touch it crumbled to pieces.

Besides the flexibility, why order a new braided copper ground strap from the dealer at $60.00 U.S?
Would it not be simple, quicker and cheaper overall to either take a bit of 4 gauge battery/welding cable and solder two female ends on? Or go to any auto parts store and buy a pre-made ground cable of the length required? 12" to 16" ??? The engine doesn't vibrate so violently to break such a cable and it would not corrode like the braided one.
Of course I wrote the above prior to seeing the end of the video and that spider nest cable they sent. I guess all that for a mere $60 wasn't bad after all.
However, since the part that actually failed was the copper braid strap. Just removing that part and adding a cable as I mentioned above would have sufficed. Yes? No?

Nice video. Right to the point. Do you think you would have found the ground issue without the ABS system making the clicking noise?

    • @jamesdanner7850
      @jamesdanner7850  10 років тому +1

thanks. and to be honest, Yes i would have found it. But...anyone, including me, could easily go the wrong path for a bit first. the relay is the only connection point before the plug at the pump, which is above fuel tank. and i hate piercing wires, so i could have easily wanted to drop the fuel tank to check the wires at their final destination. how tempted would anyone be to tell service writer to sell the whole fuel pump before you did that much work. or worse..u check the power and forget the ground and install new pump and it still doesn't work. i have become a little redundant with testing to avoid those scenarios as i grow in knowledge. im sure others have same or better stories. ha..thanks for watching.
