I've been to so many Tom Petty concerts that he became so familiar, he was like a friend. He was always so laid back, tapping that right foot to time, wearing jeans and tees. And he was as good in concert as he was recorded. He was nothing short of brillaint. He always spoke unpretentiously to his audience and connected without fail. The Heartbreakers were good and seemingly approachable as Tom seemed to be. And his sense of humor was easy and lacked any sort of hatefulness towards anyone. I don't think he wrote a bad song ever. What a cool guy he was. I absolutely feel like I've lost a friend. What a great loss to all of us who loved Tom Petty. RIP Tom.
Great tribute Michele.
Great memories to have Michele!...Just watched his 'Rock goes to College' (was a BBC series) gig he did at Oxford Polytechnic (which is a university in UK) gig 1980. It was Excellent. Nice words.
You could not have said it better young lady, thanks.
I think he was talented, but aside from having a hit song almost every release, a lot of his music was in fact mediocre and boring. He's what the music industry refers to as a "one hit wonder", meaning, there will usually be at least one hit song on every release, every other year or so. The rest of it usually isn't very good. You can immediately recognize the hit songs though, like in this video. I find the first 14 minutes to be boring, but when the song "Breakdown" starts, it's like a breath of fresh air. Then it kinda goes back to mediocrity again.
Being a fan of Tom's since the early 80's it will now be one of my biggest regrets that I never had a chance to see him perform live.
I don't care what Petty song you heard first. You knew he was stay'n around. Blessed with so much talent.
I remember the album cover to Damn the Torpedoes and hearing it on my neighbor's record player and suddenly feeling absolutely ecstatic...
Like nothing I'd heard before!
First heard him in '77, and have been a big fan since.
I was 17 and loved Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, I am 58 and I still love Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers .
I think you will still love them when you are 59.......69
....

I was 15 and in 1975, when my brother brought home the 1st TPHB album from college and told me that I needed to know this artist. I played this album on repeat every day. I grew up in a small, backwoods southern town. As Tom and I both became older, apparently we both reconnected with our Southern roots and made peace with it all. I was with him for the entire ride through the excellent The Traveling Wilburys era and his very last album. I’m 63 and still rocking with Tom.
Campbell is so underrated as a guitarist.
Who rates him low? Nobody rates him low
@@Vibeagain exactly
@@Vibeagain
He's usually not mentioned at all when talking about rock guitarists and not often featured in guitar magazines.
@@hinjurock70 fair nuff
It's almost like the guitar player's guitar player 🤷🏻♀️ not enough people know who he is And what he has played !
Tom was 28 in this video... amazing. Will forever be the straight up COOLEST dude in music.
Wow he was so young back then, idk to me he kinda looks like he is 21 or 20 years old
yes he will
28 in the video, 26 when his first album "Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers" was released on Shelter records. It's astonishing that someone so young had already found such a unique voice and style. You'll never confuse a Tom Petty recording with another artist.
28 really? I was guessing 22 to 25. He did look much younger than actually was
I was an FM radio DJ thru the ‘70s. I GOT FIRED for playing Tom Petty (actually “Fooled Again” from “the “live ‘Leg” EP that came out between the first and second LPs. My Program Director said “I said NO PUNK ROCK” and canned me. In the early days, the industry wasn’t sure how to categorize TP. I basically told him to go f*ck himself on my way out. But I had the number one ratings in the city in my time slot and the General Manager hired me back the next day…So, I walked back in and started my show with “Fooled Again,” that I had been fired fir playing!…LOVED Petty. Sad he’s gone. Ironically, a bandmate of mine ended up one of the Heartbreakers back-up singers for Live Aid and the Plantations Tour…and a bunch of Howie’s basses and guitars ended up in my hands after he passed.👍
Thank you for that. TP saved us from disco and easy listening 🎸💘
Tom Petty was definitely one of the best in Rock and Roll history. RIP. In Rock Heaven ♥️My daughter joined you there in heaven this year. She was only “36”, but she knew good rock music from the other garbage. I taught her. Her Mom, dad was a big fan of the “CARS “ and”Def Leppard”, he passed when she was only 18! 😢 love you Tom 🎉 forever grateful 😇
A friend of 35 years of mine was visiting me in Memphis back in may 2017. Tom was going to be playing at the FedEx forum. I offered to take him. He didn't want to go, so we left him at our house and me and the wife went and had a blast!
I remember watching this on TV, he looks like A kid, So did I back then. Getting old is A privilege that not everyone gets.
Mike Campbell. Possibly the most criminally under-rated guitar players of the last 40 years.
Man the lead guitar is just so damn good.
he was known his brilliance.
for 40years, to paraphrase, 'anything that was Tom Petty was fine'. Remembering the much beloved Head Heartbreaker on what would have been his 71st...the missing IS the hardest part.
Unfiltered, vintage TP. Can't ask for more.
for those of us who - at that time - loved the Clash, the Jam, Stranglers and all the rest, well we embraced Tom and his gang, and The Pretenders based on great songs + PLUS integrity. We won't see his like again.
Tom Petty will always be immortal, we have memories of him
Really ?
Dang, I didn't think I'd be having such a hard time with this. He was such a great presence in the world. I'm so glad I lived during his lifetime.
Love Tom..fan for over forty years. Right now laying back and relaxing with Tom and the beloved heartbreakers 💋
Me too!!!❤❤❤ Tom 4 ever!!!❤❤❤🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️fly with the rock n roll angels Tom!❤❤❤🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️
Me too❤
Damn it! I can't believe Tom Petty is gone. This was one passing that really hurt. His music was the soundtrack of my life starting in 1978. We lost a good one. Not only was he a great singer, songwriter and musician but a damn good person. You are gone but you left a legacy of great music that will continue to bring joy to generations of fans. Love you and rest in peace, Tom!
alwaysengines still hurts. That’s why I’m here tonight.
Better to die young than to fade way (!?).
England liked TP and the Breakers more than the USA from roughly '76 to maybe '78. The Brits viewed them as sort of 'punk', which was hot then. I miss him badly. Lucky I am a ten minute drive to his boyhood home......but not sure if that helps the utter feeling of loss..............
I seem to remember that at this time there was a "movement" called "new wave". As I recall, the movement was supposed to be about returning to a "stripped-down" and not "over-produced" version of rock'n'roll. It may have been influenced by the punk movement, but the musicians could actually play their instruments. Again, as i recall, the idea was rock had lost its way in art-rock, and production values which couldn't be reproduced in concert. Somehow, the name of that movement, "new wave", was redefined to classify mid-80s bands with electronic keyboard instrumentation, over-sprayed hair, and a mod-ish attitude.
Am I the only one who remembers this? Or, did I make it up in my mind? To me, new wave is TP&TH, the Cars, Blondie, the Clash, the Pretenders, Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson, etc.
If true, then I love new wave rock'n'roll and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were a premier act. Loved them, loved this. Thought they were the best live show when I saw them in '84.
If not, then I will give it up as a fantasy.
Love Tom Petty's music. Awesome.
His live music definitely sounds the same as that from a recording studio. A testament to their greatness❤
What a terrible loss. Felt like his reserve for great and connective music was inexhaustible and I'm grateful we at least have his entire catalog of great songs. One of our greatest American songwriters.
I don't see how anyone can put a thumbs down to this. If you don't like it, just don't watch it.
Some people were just BORN to be on the stage and I believe Tom was one of them. May he RIP. We love you Tom.
maybe they didn't like skipping through the adverts in the recording :D
I Remember reading one of Tom Petty's post i think it was about his last album and i was completely jaw dropped by his lirycs, after 40 years this man could be as prolific as he was during his time here on video..This new generation have a lot to do yet to catching up,they don't have the resume to compete in this level..Legend we miss you brother!!
yeah, you're right....he was purely unique, and seemed to continue to get better as a songwriter; his last stuff was maybe even more profound. STILL getting better all the time----unheard of. Supposedly, he lived and breathed music, and felt guilty if he took any time away from being able to write and noodle things into an amazing piece of music.
Catching up? They’ll NEVER even get remotely close…plastic computer music…absolute shit
Hard to accept this is 40 years ago. Astonishing
I know what you mean, I turn 60 next week.
laudarevsonhunt & I turned 59 on 9/11 I saw Tom petty & the Heartbreakers in Casswlberry Fl. 1980 (I think) after getting Damd the Torpedoes album & I was hooked 4 life unforgettable concert my daughter now wears the t-shirt from the concert & in hi-school they'd make her tape out the word Damd lol.. .. the memories .. hard to believe my #IDOL is gone & I miss the tour book he signed 4 me to a house fire in 85' 💔 #tompetty #4life 😚🎈
agree!
Yes would like to go back to that time, kiss my parents and sisters, and go to as many concerts as possible.

Yes, aged "fogie" is a strange time of life here too !. So amazing to see and remember 78, and a friend - diseased since 88 - who recommended Tom Petty to me.
Plenty to attend to keeps the mind out of the Blues. We live in strange days.
RIP Tom Petty, this man was always at the top of his game...
On May 11 1977 they played the 'Odean' Cinema ,Birmingham England . I was there and still remember and feel the skill ,passion and slickness of the show . They were travelling about in a huge camper bus with another carrying the kit . 6 shows a week and letting us here in UK get a load of it , Happy days . Miss em all .
RIP Tom. Thanks for the great tunes.
THERE WILL NEVER BE A TOM PETTY AGAIN. MISS YOU SO SO MUCH. R. I. P.
A great singer and songwriter and not to mention a stunningly beautiful man
Who was any better for as long? Thank you Tom for being there for me from when I discovered you as a 9 yr old after I "borrowed" my older cousin's copy of "Damn the Torpedoes" to now. You were woven into the fabric of the soundtrack of my life. Also "Full Moon Fever" got me thru a dark period in my life. Rest In Peace. "There's a Southern accent, where I come from-the young 'uns call it country, the Yankees call it dumb-I got my own way of talkin', but everything gets done-with a Southern accent, where I come from" Thank you Tom Petty.
This yankee just loves those lyrics.
I got a Tennessee Southern accent myself.
I was 15 when this was recorded. Tommy was a grownup to me back then in 1978. He was so old and wise lol. I’m 56 now and I feel like I lost my big brother. His music was such a huge part of my life for 4 decades. ❤️
How TPHB literally wrote the soundtrack of my childhood. You are missed brother
I had no idea Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers made it in the U.K. before they did in the US. RIP Tom. Thanks for all the great music and for being such a part of my life back in the late 70s and 80s. You will be missed.
Same thing happened with Jimi Hendrix.
This video is great in so many ways. Watch Mike Campbell rip it up with that calm and thoughtful demeanor. He and Tom were perfectly matched for cool and brilliance. Benmont is also genius, I wish he got more camera time in concert footage... in a band that is so guitar forward, he manages to shine without overwhelming. The whole band was just awesome. Love them so much and always a special place in my heart and memories.
Campbell always played the perfect solo for the song.
couldn't agree more. They are real musicians a real band.
RIP Tom. You were always a giant in Rock n Roll. You are now a certified legend who will never be forgotten.
The heartbreakers during the your gonna get it era is my all time favorite they were so damn good at this time
Damn. What a set. Everybody is ON FIRE here.
Watching this at the end of 2023. Was there ever a cooler MF than Tom Petty? I’m so upset that I never got to see him live. 😢
wow he was 27/28 yrs old sounding great. Amazing the guys stay with him til the end.
Proof he was really a good guy
well 2 guys did, unless the drummer had surgery that turned him into a bald black guy in the mid 90s
He became a heroin addict and Tom said they hung with him for a long time, but could not get him to clean-up...ironic that Tom developed the same issue later (in the 1990s) after a divorce. My heart is broken.
@@cyninbend No,Stan Lynch got tired of touring as did bassist Ron Blair.Howie Epstein replaced Ron on bass and got hooked on smack...see him at TP. and H.Bs R&R Hall of Fame before he passed.Ron came back after Tom fired Howie and eventually Benmont Tench was replaced by Scott Thurston on keys and Steve Cerrone replaced Stan on drums.
Tom was a talented task master and genius writer and singer.
RIP Tom
Two of his best songs are here! I Need To Know and Breakdown are the harder rock songs I like best.
I saw The Beatles at The Hollywood Bowl in ‘64 and ‘65. And in 2017, I saw Tom & The Heartbreakers at The Bowl, sitting up close where the pool and fountains used to be. This band was always so tight - sounded like the records but not - their own style as a Jam Band. They were originals. Miss ya Tom.
How bittersweet it is to see him perform. He's deeply missed by all that loved him and his unmatched talent.
RIP, Thomas Earl Petty :`^( It doesn't seem possible that he's gone - WAY too soon.
❤
It's so sad that the worst of America overshadowed the passing of this wonderful American treasure. Love that Southern Rock sound, loved TP&H because they stayed so grassroots. Free Flyin' and free of the chains that bind. Thank you for sharing your vision of the world and what it is to be human Tom Petty.
R.I.P., Tom. The world has lost a truly unique artist who never lost his passion and vision. His/their music will live on forever. Thank you for all the music, Tom!
Tom was already a great front man as you can see in this BBC show. The band is tight, strong in keeping the beat and dynamics. Mike Campbell is an under-rated guitar player. His fills and solos capture the feel. Thanks for posting this, RIP Tom.
I look at the audience and they are from another time (my era!). And I look at the Heartbreakers in this video and see progressive. They were so ahead of their time. This all could’ve been brand new today.
They were actually behind the times, that's what made them so good.
Indeed,Tom was a progressive liberal: but he never pontificated nor got jaded and his adoring fans were never fully sated though in the end it can be said that he shoulda. Kept dancing with Mary Jane
Tom and Stan, what a sound together. RIP Tom.

At the 13:40 mark, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers play BREAKDOWN. Great song.
Great video of a young Tom and the Heartbreakers. Great first and second album songs played in this video! Greatest American Rock Band!
this was awesome! not fair Tom is gone. brilliant artist!
A true rocker. RIP Tom. We will listen to you music forever. You will be so so missed..
Don't forget this was before Animal House so Petty was playing Shout before playing Shout was popular. Trendsetter, EpiTOMe of cool.
Another great performer lost too soon. Thank you, Tom , for ALL the great music you brought us. You are an all time great in my mind.
R.I.P. TOM YOU WILL BE MISSED BUT NOT FORGOTTEN
TOM PETTY. LEGEND. LOVE, AND THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC. YOU WILL LIVE FOREVER IN OUR HEARTS.
I don't think I've ever loved Breakdown as much I have right this moment
Oh the joy of living in the video age. Just imagine, the people of the future will be able to experience music like this performed by the originators and I can also imagine that this is an artist who will be revered by them through videos like this. It will be like being a Classical Music fan being able to put on a recording of Beethoven, Mozart, et al and seeing them as they truly were and sounded. Tom Petty may be gone but will be forever remembered as an Artist of pure quality.
The thing about classical is that it IS the way it sounded then. That's the thing about classical composers, they wrote music for other people to play, other people have always played their music. Even if they played it would be one part among many. They usually wrote music for people who where much better at their instruments than the composers were. Anyway, I get what your saying and I agree :)
So many "cover" songs of this era, hits 30-40 years before they were born. We were there for the live version ;-)
R.I.P. Tom Petty. I wish I could have seen you in concert.
I saw him twice, but I wish I had seen him more too, especially back in the day!!
Prolific song writer....One of the best ever...gonna miss you bro..Thx for the killer tunes!!!
I was fortunate enough to see Tom and the Heartbreakers on the 4th of July in 1980. I loved their records but live they were exciting and spellbinding and this concert was one of my favorite shows of all the concerts I've seen in my life. Tom Petty had an aura around him which was mesmerizing but he was also down to earth. His performance during Breakdown and Shout was particularly exciting. Every single member of this group did their part to make the complete perfect whole.
I am so sorry that I did not get to see Tom and the Heartbreakers during that last tour. Like many of us I thought that there would be another opportunity. Tom's loss to the music world, his family, friends and fans is inestimable. Love you, Tom. RIP!
Forming a band in heaven with George and Roy
Soundtrack to my late teens.. RIP Tom....
It's tough headlining a funeral.
I saw Tom Petty around this same time at Detroit's Cobo Arena. A year or two before Damn The Torpedoes came out launching his superstar career. I'm pretty sure he opened a show for someone else at the time, but I was really excited about seeing him because I really liked the songs American Girl and I Need To Know. He didn't disappoint that night and went on to become a legend of rock.
‘Fresh’ Tom Petty - one of the best recordings from Gainesville’s finest!
Anything that`s rock and roll is fine. It sure is. Eternally.
Rest in peace, Tom.
Stan Lynch really was a solid drummer and his vocals complimented Tom's so well. Too bad things when South for him and so Tom couldn't him in he band.
Wow!! Insane!! I love it!! Brings back memories!! All of them are awesome musicians!! I miss him!! He already had Tom Petty Radio on SiriusXM Ch 31, so now they are playing Petty nonstop. They even play snipits from his shows. He was a funny guy too. I never get tired of it!! He wrote soooo many songs!! RIP HEARTBREAKER!!
Imagine being 26 years old, releasing your very first album, and it contains a song that is a future classic. "American Girl" is an astonishing recording, especially considering how young and (relatively) inexperienced the band was at the time.
He was a great person, always came across as genuine. Right about 78, he was considered "New Wave" by many. Some to a lesser degree "Punk". Just the way it was. Still sad, when thinking he's gone forever. But, his music will be around forever!
They were actually old wave.
Truly a master at his trade, the whole band like a special ops team. I miss Tom so much. It’s a rumor that he saved FM radio during the eighties. I can believe it. The heartbreakers and Tom touched so many people with their music. Hopefully I will see him again at a better place.
He saved us from DISCO, thank you forever for that TP 🎸💘 HB
Thank God for Tom Petty
2nd October 2017 Tom my heart is broken. Thru 40 years I have loved you and your music, even in my darkest hours, Tom you always made me feel better. I will miss you to the end of my life, so many of my personal heroes gone this last 2 years. Your loss is breaking me. Have a ball with the friends you have up there and take all the love in the world to them from us; tell them they are not forgotten as neither will you. My love and admiration to you and my sincere sympathies to your family and the Band. From England. x
Beautiful ❤
Remember well us squeezing into my mates front room in Dublin aged 16 to watch this. Old Bob was like a little kid with his beloved TP&TH on the show. It’s still one of the great live performances for me. The sound and energy was incredible. We had the albums but this was the first time we saw them.
wow ...another great artist gone..short story your in a higher place now Mr.petty ...you will b missed...what a break down...we can here you singing now..we r losing all of our great great great artist/music..
R.I.P Tom, what a legend, always just for the music, we will miss you
Music like this never dies.
One of my favorite live concerts to listen besides the Santa Monica show 12-31-78. This was when Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were living it up before hitting Fame!
Life well-lived. Thank you, TP. 10/2/17
I saw this version of Petty, and the energy and songwriting was mesmerizing. Tom on Fooled again is at his punk best. He don't like it! The rest of us loved it and always will.
❤
Wow, they were great!
Old Grey Whistle Test, Tom Petty great combination
They are so great. Just loved this.
What an absolute creative genius and master talent.
Tom the wife sings your tunes all the time man....we miss you dearly.
30:59 that moment when the whole crowd (and the band) don't realise they are hearing what will become a HUGE and long-lasting American signature toon...
RIP A sad day today, a murderer in Vegas killed at least 59 and wounded 535 and we lost Tom Petty to a heart attack. At least we have him here at his best.
yeah horrible day.
At least we have him here at his best. Yes we did. So many memories of the late 70's wiv these songs and then his best album ever damn the torpedoes.
Remember how Keon Russell x said ya can’t wear sunglasses at night…you have to earn the right? Then in 2014-17 ish time when he won awards and his speech had him putting on the sunglasses…earned and loved…

Goodnight sweet prince.
Great to have been there to hear how they started, changed it up again and again but never lost what made them click together!
I cannot believe that Tom is gone. My heart is broken. I am keeping his family and band mates in my prayers. He is and was the best. I am in shock.
All the Travelling Willburies, are I think. Bad days we live in.

Thanks riffman1218 for bring us this piece of magic, the BBC production still stands the test of time! Its the 1st I have notice Roys great bass lines on American Girl! A great front man and great band. thanks for being part of my life's soundtrack for the last 40 year. Rock on Tom RIP
