Clapton has more than earned my respect, as a musician who’s devoted himself with sincerity to a succession of authentic American musical forms, including Delta and Chicago blues, Chuck Berry-style rock and roll, country, and JJ Cale-style rockabilly.
He didn’t get stuck in a rut, or become a parody of himself. And he wisely went back to acoustic blues as an older man, when he perhaps had less intensity, but more character to draw on.

Eric Clapton is one of my biggest idols, i grew up listening his albums and his performances and i’m just 25 years old, reading all those comments of people who really had the chance to see him live in his prime is amazing you don’t know how lucky you guys were to see this legend live in his finest era. Yo be 21 again. 1977 ws a very good year to be alive. After, 461 Ocean Blvd years were extra laid back ones not unlike Greg Allmans album which along with these years I wore out on the turntable and on my home recorderd cassettes in my VW bug with surf racks scouring the point breaks and beach breaks of Santa Barbara County.
Thank you for this lovely offering from England and country and people I dearly remember and love. P& L.

I'll never be 21 again, but I got to hear him do this live just last year. It's crazy to think that this was filmed 47 years ago, because he sounds every bit as good today as he did then. Maybe, if I'm being honest, a little bit better. Drying out has been very good for him. I think being this good was very hard for him to deal with as a younger person. He seems to have aged into it nicely.

Playing tons of the parts that Clapton would usually do (not that Clapton isn't playing at about the highest level I've ever seen a full-on drunk play, and I mean that in a good way)... EC’s father was a 🇨🇦 soldier. I’m originally from Alberta & Eric's half brother used to live in Raincouver.
This video, so far, (Alberta), foreshadowing the ‘78 performance I saw…Eric laying back, generously giving Terry the guitar spotlight. It’s really sad knowing bassist, Carl Radle, would die only a few years later, in 1980.
Too bad The Core’s not included on this one, a personal favourite from the Slowhand album.

George Terry was from Miami, Fla. Producer Tom Dowd hooked him up with Clapton. Dowd ran Criteria Studios in Miami which was owned by Atlantic Records. Atlantic also leased 461 South Ocean Blvd. for those artists in residence at Criteria. 461 was in Golden Beach, north Miami Beach. The whole Clapton, Elliman, Terry thing came out of Tom Dowd, Criteria and Miami Beach.

    I saw Clapton three times:
    1. As second guitarist for Dire Straits at Wembley Stadium on June 11 1988 - he was astounding, as was the band.\
    2. Again at Wembley Stadium in 1992 on a double bill with Elton John - he was again astounding, he did a two-hour set, as did Elton. Great night.
    3. A third and final time at Earls Court in London in 1998 with Bonnie Raitt as the support. He was nothing less than brilliant.
What you have to know is that Clapton could fart out the phone book and it would be marvellous. I don't rate the first two songs but in his hands they still sound much better than they deserve. Clapton's second guitarist here, George Terry, takes the solos for the first few numbers and really shows the gap in class between himself and Clapton. When Eric grabs his Strat here and right from the start plays it with ease, it's just wonderful. Thank God he's still with us and still playing. Eighty next year, I can't believe it. x

I have been a huge Eric fan most all of my many years on this planet. I saw him many times over the years. I did go and see him back when his band included Marci Levi and Yvonne Elliman. I can tell you that those two girls all but stole the show from Eric that night....they were amazing! I guess being a guitar player myself has made me notice things that others may not. When Eric was playing the solo in the song "Tell the Truth" he made some pretty bad mistakes. I would attribute that to his heavy drinking and drug usage during this period of his life. In fact did you notice he could not even introduce Yvonne properly, slurring his words? If you take this performance and compare it with for example- the live Cream reunion concert at the Royal Albert Hall. you should notice a HUGE improvement with Eric. He never misses one note - Not even one, and it was all improvised. Do you even know how hard that is to do? Only someone with Eric's experience can pull that off...Love him and his music.

As well as Marcella Detroit (Levy) on the other side, who later became famous in Shakespeare’s Sister (late 80s, early 90s). She also co-wrote ‘Lay Down Sally’. With regards to Yvonne Ellman. She toured with Clapton from the early/mid 70s and can be heard on the ‘EC was here’ live album. She was signed to RSO, like Eric at that time.
