A little discouraging to hear that the social media presence has such an affect on being hired. Im not on instagram, snap chat, Twitter, etc. I’m not “hiding” anything as you said, I just find most social media platforms to be toxic to metal health. Is that really a big deal in being hired ? I really want a career in this industry and I know social media is important to be successful once in it but do I really have to be on it just to get my foot in the door?
Chelseaa I don’t think so! Just Jacky’s personal opinion. I think it’s great to have a portfolio/ business page, but I personally don’t think it would dampen your chances. Don’t be discouraged! I think it’s cool you do what you need for your mental health. I think social media has positives and negatives!
Ebae 101 I get that. Everything is a choice but I feel that social media takes away from our interactions with people right in front of us. We ignore the ones who are really there trying to make memories just so we can post a pictures of our life highlights and get likes. It just seems so silly to me. I couldn’t care less about posting my life and getting likes. I just want to enjoy the moment I’m in....To each is own of course but that’s just my opinion.
I dont think it's mandatory by any means. But every call I got from a potential employer mentioned my social media presence. They all complimented me on it bc I dont believe alot of esty's in my area begin theirs while in school like I did. I just documented my journey on IG
Just found your channel. I also went to esthetician school to do lashes, and I found that I didn’t like doing lashes! Lol.. but now I love waxing and facials! I’m finished school took my written exam and now I’m waiting to do my practical exam! NJ esthetician here!! Thanks!
I remember watching this around August 2020, when I was deciding whether I wanted to be an esthetician. I enrolled in an esthetics program November. And I just graduated yesterday 🎉 Thank you Tess. I’ve binge watched your UA-cam videos. Follow you on IG. Listened to your podcast to school and on my way home. You’ve taught me so much and motivated me to push thru this path. I am so grateful.
I have a job lined up at European wax center while I’m in school just as front desk and I’m so excited to have some experience and get my foot in the door at a good company!
Thank you for this video! I am currently in esthetician school and set to finish in October (1,000 hours required in Georgia) but I’ve been debating leaving my current job in the medical field to pursue working in this field prior to finishing school. Great tip on putting your information on Linked In while in school.
I love these videos with Jacky! She should honestly consider doing some sort of teaching/instructing in the future. Thank you both for sitting down and talking about these kinds of things. I will be (hopefully) starting school this April, so they are extremely helpful!
Tylynn Martin hello cutie!! Ah you’re so welcome, thank you so much for the support, it makes me want to keep going! Jacky is the best. I tried to convince her to start a channel but she says “not gonna happen” 🤚😭 too busy building her empire! 👌😂 lmk if there are any other videos that will help you! All my love.
I start esthetics school this Wednesday full time and I’m so excited! Your videos have really helped me out and I love watching them. I have a video request.....could you please do a video on resumes and how you switched yours from entertainment to esthetics? Just any tips you have on how to make a good resume/what to maybe put on it. I’m horrible with resumes to begin with and I’ve been in childcare my whole career so I’d like some tips on how I can make my resume look good either while I’m in school or after school. Thanks! 😊💕
Chelsea Yager definitely! I will work on that. Send me a dm sometime when your resume is ready, I’ll send you my email and I will take a look at it for you if you want. 😘
Thank you for this video!! I recently found your channel and have been watching a lot of your videos and find them to be very informal and helpful. I graduated from esthetics school this past December and I'm halfway done with my state boards. I have nothing lined up yet but I have been sending out resumes every day and haven't gotten much feedback yet which has been a little discouraging but I'm trying to stay positive. When you mentioned how you felt about transitioning careers and landing your first job how nervewracking it can be is definitely relatable and I am currently feeling all of those things, lol. Anyways, sorry for the long comment, keep up the great content Tess! :)
Melissa Farrell you warm my heart and I honestly know you will find the right thing. Keep your eye on the prize and work hard. I love you and believe in you 100%.
I have graduated and am licensed. I have had several interviews but nothing really went official. I made physical copies of my resume and went to places I wanted to go. There was 1 place that actually sent my resume to another place when they were not hiring so that was cool of them to do. I've been a little bit discouraged too but ultimately I want to be somewhere that will appreciate me and likewise. I just had an interview the other day and my mom and sister keeps telling me they have a gut feeling I might just get it😂 Who knows, but stay positive!❤️
I love all of your videos! I am going to Esthetics school in July after I graduate from high school this year! I have no idea what to expect and I will be moving to a completely different state by myself. Your videos have helped me so much in planning and getting ready for the future!
I’ve watched your videos earlier last year & of course I took notes! I took a few trainings outside of my school and the salon owner is interested in hiring me once I graduate! 💖💖
at my school we get taught facials, waxing, electric modalities, makeup, eyelash and eyebrow tinting! we learn so much compared to other schools around here!
Wow very relatable im interested in becoming an esthetician focusing on skin care lashes and waxing. im 28 and would be changing career paths and like you Idek if im going to like it or how to make it but this video is very helpful and motivational !.. Thanks
Great video, BUT some parts were VERY disappointing. Specifically judging ppl by social media, & expecting ppl not to discuss salary until AFTER their training. First, ppl’s private life and work life are separate. What & how they live their lives off the clock should be their business period. As long as they’re not hurting anyone. Judging them by their social media is definitely discriminatory. I personally know a few ppl who aren’t on social media, or their page is private due to past stalking experiences. How would you feel if your employees or potential employees started snooping into your personal life? I only relate if you’re looking at someone’s biz social media, because that’s like a visual portfolio. Next I really cannot wrap my head around expecting someone not to mention or speak on their salary requirements until after training. That’s a waste of both ppls time if they decide your salary offer is unacceptable. Is this specific to the beauty industry, because I’ve NEVER heard or experienced this in any other career fields?
Wow, both of you are beautiful!❤️ Love the info it's so helpful! I have noticed in my interviews that some spa's will be commission only. What is your take on that? I am use to the hourly rate so I'm a bit hesitant when they only commission and usually it's around 43%.
Mr Esthe hi! You are so sweet. Gah it’s tough because as a new esthetician sometimes you do need to start somewhere.. however I personally don’t believe commission only is a fair pay structure. Especially if you are building a new clientele. My first ever job offer as an esty was commission only.. I ended up turning it down because it didn’t feel fair to me- a week later a better opportunity came up! I know it doesn’t always apply, but I think if you tend to hold out for more and know your worth the universe will respond!
Hi Tess, I recently found your channel and subscribed. I love your videos! You are so well spoken and very informative about the industry! I am a yoga instructor looking to get into the esthetics world...I am thinking of starting esthiology school at Aveda but I am also considering whether I should go back to school to become an RN (I have a bachelors degree in liberal arts). I am most interested in the medical esthiology side of the industry and would ideally like to work at a dermatologist office or cosmetic surgeon office doing more advanced treatments. I am a little unclear though if nursing school would be worth it. RNs can do injectables and penetrate the skin, but it’s a lot of money and time to commit for the education. What is your advice for someone like me? Do you think I could just take a lot of continuing education outside training classes for lasers, microdermabrasion etc and get trained by the doctor once I land a job or does nursing school really give you a hiring and salary advantage in medical esthetics? Thank you so much for your valuable input! ❤️😊
canelagrace hi beautiful! Thank you so much for all the kind words. I think it really depends on what state you live in and whether you want to administer the treatments yourself, or just help out a dr! With their supervision, you might be able to do some of the things you want! I have estie friends who love working at the dermatologist’s, and nurses who love working at a medical spa! Tess Zolly Thank you so much for your reply, Tess! That would be a great video idea. :) You’re definitely right about each state being different... I know that only RNs can legally do injectables, but there is some grey area around lasers, coolsculpting, microneedling, etc. It would be great to get some insight. Thank you for providing such valuable and fun content!
So you would want to train someone with the chance that they will just leave because the salary isnt want they want. That sounds like a waste of time for both parties.
That’s extremely weird for a hiring manager to not like or consider someone because their stuff is private. People have stalkers, and many situations where they don’t want everyone to be able to see their social media’s. Most moms put their facebooks & such on private because they don’t want people stealing pictures of their young children in bathing suits. My social media’s are to interact with family, share photos & that’s none of an employers business to know necessarily. That’s what references are for. It’s one thing to see a racist comment on their public profile & not consider an employee but being private on social media hindering you from a job or opportunity isn’t okay. I wouldn’t want to work for someone like that.
Also I’m sure she didn’t mean anything bad by it I just wanted to say that it’s very normal to have private accounts & I hope these things will be taken into consideration maybe ❤️ I’d hate someone to be turned down because of a bad situation they are trying to get out of.
Parker Rollins I totally get you. I agree with you. It was interesting to hear jackys opinion as a manager- I somewhat disagree. A private act wouldn’t be a red flag to me, however I think social media gives people an advantage to use it as a portfolio and way to promote your philosophy on skin. However the safety issue is very valid and the most important if that is a concern.
Tess Zolly oh 100%! I have a separate account for anyone to follow that’s not under my name, but my business, & social media is so huge now especially if you want clientele. I had someone taking my ultrasounds & eventually stealing pictures of my child & posing as her mom so now all of my personal accounts are private. I also had a stalker for years 🥴 But I don’t disagree with her searching because you don’t want someone thats homophobic, or racist etc taking all kinds of clients. That would be awful. I really appreciate you responding. I hope I didn’t come off super rude because rereading it I could see how my tone could be translating different. Thanks again 🥰❤️ I love your channel & your personality!

Hi i just started esti school and so far its very hard just cause its online, I feel as if i am not learning alot, any tips on where I can do outside research or find any classes online? Thank you ! Love the channel !
Makayla Garcia hi! Ah I can’t imagine being an esty student right now. Yes/- concepts institute of advanced esthetics online for extra classes. And my podcast may be helpful- we interview lots of experts! So that’s free :)
ijewelsi ! I have friends who have done it successfully so it’s certainly possibly but I think it takes a special person. I myself wouldn’t have been ready. I think there’s a lot of value in working for someone else and picking up on things you don’t learn in school.
Lorraine from Miami we both had jobs before school started at 4pm! Our school was a community college so it was pretty affordable, and I also go t financial aid which paid for most of it !
I do not agree with social media , I cancelled my accounts due to trolls and psycho imbalanced community I live in. Lack of social media does not reflect reality.
What school did you attend to get your license? I'm planning on attending the Aveda Institute this fall and I know all schools are different, before this video I never thought of taking courses before obtaining my license! Thanks for the advice!
I am an author and co-host of a podcast, Blue Collar, Green Pockets. Each week we feature folks working in various lucrative career fields that do not necessarily require college. Is it possible that you would be available to appear on our show this evening at 8pm EST (9/8/20)? Email me at chuck@bluecollargreenpockets.com.

Hi! Just asked Jacky- she recommends Extreme Lashes. Otherwise find someone with good reviews in your area and work for/ learn from them! :)
Lash primp in Atlanta! If your local to there!
I would also check your state website, to see what institution is accredited. Where I live, they have lash institutes listed.

ijewelsi ! I have friends who have done it successfully so it’s certainly possibly but I think it takes a special person. I myself wouldn’t have been ready. I think there’s a lot of value in working for someone else and picking up on things you don’t learn in school.
How did you guys get the money to go to these schools? How did you support yourself while in school?
Lorraine from Miami we both had jobs before school started at 4pm! Our school was a community college so it was pretty affordable, and I also go t financial aid which paid for most of it !
Wow Tess. That’s really great. Do you mind me asking you some more detailed questions about that or can I DM you?
I do not agree with social media , I cancelled my accounts due to trolls and psycho imbalanced community I live in. Lack of social media does not reflect reality.
What school did you attend to get your license? I'm planning on attending the Aveda Institute this fall and I know all schools are different, before this video I never thought of taking courses before obtaining my license! Thanks for the advice!
Cortney Bachman hi! We went to skyline
I hide my social media because I have a psycho ex.
DudleyMooreFan oh man can we block so you can thrive ? X
@@TessZolly I've tried. He keeps creating accounts with different names.
