Another great video, Tess!! I agree with it all! I personally transferred from one school to the next halfway through my schooling, because I believed that the bigger, well known name of the second school would help me in the future. While I don't regret my decision because I learned a lot at both schools and feel I got the best of both worlds, I also realized that school is simply meant to help you pass state board. The rest is up to you, and I whole heartedly agree that drive, passion, and dedication will take you further than where you went to school. When it comes to income in this industry, one of the things that drew me in, is that the more you put into it, the more it will give back to you. Dedicated time, passion and hard work can result in whatever you want your income to be. Just as a reference, if you were to look up how much a server in a restaurant makes, it'll tell you 20-30k, however I know servers bringing in 80-100k. Same can be true in this industry, with the exception that you're changing peoples lives instead of serving them dinner, lol. Your life is what you make of it! All this information was very well communicated. You are a gem to new esties in the industry. Great job! :)
Misssassysauce I have no words! Pinned comment. Thank you so much for watching and for the time it took to write such genuine heartfelt feedback. It’s so true you get out of it what you put in just like anything else.
Thanks for another informative video! I totally agree about the schooling myth. I was trained at an Aveda concept school for less than $6K & passed my boards on the 1st attempt. In my experience & what I learned from other esties, school provides the bare minimum to pass the state board exam. What boosted my knowledge & confidence in the treatment room was the training offered by my first employer; it's the reason I chose to work there. At my first job, we were expected to perform all services offered by the spa. After being trained on everything, I found that facials & the neck/shoulder massage are my thing. People came to me for my approach & the quality of my touch. It's important to learn as many modalities as you can to see what you like/ excel at so you can specialize. I even took extra classes while in school, which Tess recommended in an older video! This really gave me an edge when interviewing for my first job out of school.
D.M. B. Thank you beauty for this helpful comment. What’s an Aveda concept school? that sounds really cool! It was my second employer that helped me find my personal style with facials and I agree it’s the outside experience that matters. I’m so happy to hear you found what you love.
D.M. B. If you don’t mind me asking, what is your salary? I’ve been looking into different careers but I want them to pay really well if I’m gonna go to post secondary school for it.
The Matrix it’s def the kind of career there’s a massive range based upon what you offer/ specialize in, whether you’re a business owner or employee, where you live. I would suggest researching job postings in your area!
I rly thought it would be higher too. 😭 But at the same time those numbers aren't accounting for tips. In FL, the mid-pay for esties is 30k, tips not included. I'd say you're making 40-45k a year if you're working full time in a place that allows you to make commission off of product sales on top of tips (probably around $15-30 extra per service I'm guessing).
I’m no genius at this, but a lot of esthetician’s in my area make 50-70k or more because they offer extra services like lashes and etc. Plus most of them work from home which also adds $ to your salary, + u can decide what u charge I think. plus tips will add $10-20 or more to your hourly wage. Also selling products can add extra money as well. The salary she’s talking about in this video is probably just what ur salary would be without the tips, selling products, working under a salon and also without extra services. There’s so much you can offer, sometimes u may have to take extra courses but the more you know and the more you try/hustle the more money you’ll make. You have to put in work to make the extra bucks and that’s with every job really. keep in mind too that if you love what you do the money shouldn’t be your main focus, you can always go back to school and get another career that interest you and do esthetics on the side.
I hate waxing, and I felt the same way at first. I’m just starting out as an esti have been an MT for years but was feeling super bored. You will do awesome!! Lots of luck 🍀

Hi Tess, I’m actually currently enrolled at Aveda for Esthiology. I’m in my second phase so I still have a while before graduation. I also would love to hear your opinion and recommendations while I’m in school, if you know anything about Aveda they use a holistic approach. I’m however wanting to go into the medical field eventually after I get some experience in a salon. They use a lot of essential oils because they say that’s what makes the product active, however I disagree with some of their beliefs. Any advise on how to just get through even though I don’t agree with a lot they teach. Thanks for your time!
aleia aragon I have heard that similar complaint from others. My advice would be to keep using that passion and questioning that comes natural to you and do your own research. I do believe some essential oils can be very healing in the right concentrations. Bare in kind every esthetician has their own beliefs and system that works. If you can have your own research to back up those opinions it’s super helpful! I hope that helps and wishing you luck.
Your video helped me so much on making decisions on my career path. It was so simple and honest and it makes me wonder how I couldn't figure this out on my own! Lol thank you!

Celebrating my birthday this week I'm very proud of you I started watching you in about 2018 when you were in school I guess or was showing the ones when you were in school. And I've been very impressed from time to time that I would check in and see that you are really advancing and just getting better and better keep up the wonderful work I hope that you will consider going and finally getting your instructors license to be aesthetics instructor I think you got what it takes. I think also people should not just take up aesthetics but they should take up at least one or two other things in the beauty field to be far more marketable from massage therapy to cosmetology, barbering, manicures, if they offer it electrolysis definitely the more skills that you have the more you can be picky of who you want to deal with. 🥰🥇🙋🏻♀️😇🌼🎂💯🎆🎉
This is like the only thing that excites me but ppl can be super discouraging when I say I want to do it. I feel like there’s so much pressure on kids to go to university and get “good” degrees. Ppl act Like anyone who just goes to college is less than the uni kids. :/
@@user-yo6re5ek1q if this is what you truly want to do just go for it. I was doing dental assisting up until October and I dropped it, I felt pressured to choose that over esthetics just because it sounded more impressive to my family but you can’t spend your life doing things that u don’t wanna do. I’m doing esthetics now and I really enjoy it!! You’ll do really well with it and can make a lot of money as long as your passionate about it, but honestly life is not centred around money. I hope you choose what you really want to do deep down!! ❤️
I've had my Cosmetology lic in CA for years specializing in hair but I've been wanting to crossover to skincare/ esthe. Do you have any advice for someone like me?
I am also a cosmetologist and I personally wouldn’t want to pay for or spend my time in more school to become an esthetician because I’m already licensed to do everything an esthetician can. I think the best way to transition is to take esthetic based courses for your CE hours or find a job with on the job training. (Wax specialists are often trained regardless of education based on how that particular business likes to perform services)
Great information! Do own your own spa or work for a chain? I’m in school right now & I really want to own my own business. But I’m not even sure how or where I should start

Learn about what to avoid and how to build a business. Maybe my podcast will help! In our recent episode with JoElle Lee we discuss this q :) thanks for watching Tara!!
Hi new subscriber :). Im just trying to find out how i need to tip my face lady. Im going to a spa that lists the "cost" of a treatment ridiculouly high. Then puts the service on half off price so people actually buy the service. Do they actually expect me to pay a certain percentage of the base price? Am i hiring an attorney? No. So why would i be paying that much? I wouldnt. Are other people? Thats the question. Thanks! ♡
Hi Erica :) thanks for joining us. Usually the standard service tip is 20% for a great service. It’s hard to know without seeing the menu and knowing what’s included to gauge which service price you should go off of though!
@@TessZolly like laser hair removal for example. Takes 5 minutes at best to do the chin. They price it at 160 and give you 50 percent off so its 80. When yo join a membership. I had to switch locations and drive very far away now to continue my treatments. Very disgusted with my experience. Will probably be the LAST time i ever participate in a service at a med spa again. And ive been going on a semi regular basis for 15 years to different places.

Truth is it can be hard to build clientele. Not a lot of people regularly want to spend over $100 on facials.
