One-week construction time-lapse with closeups: Week 14 of the Ⓢ-series

- Week 14 in the ongoing Ⓢ series, which follows the construction of a new 13-story senior living building in San Francisco. This is a #construction #timelapse with various closeups and "sub-time-lapses" at various speeds, condensing the week of May 4 - 9, 2020, into about 49 minutes.
The graffiti we saw at the end of last week is dealt with (over 3 hours). A guy with a big drill. Concrete forms. A guy with a smaller drill. There's a nice view of a moonset on Monday night. The walkway in front of the site gets covered.
A tangle of rebar and wiring. Progress continues on the shoring for the next floor up. The forms for the central core / elevator shaft are lifted up to the next level. All kinds of closeups, including a guy measuring the flatness of the concrete we saw poured last week. Another concrete pour, the first one above ground level. As always, there's always more rebar.
We see how the concrete pump accesses the line for the pumping tower, now that there's shoring for the next floor in place. This is only a temporary solution, though, we'll see a more permanent solution in coming weeks.

The decking process is called tabling in the UK. They have these Rod like devices that support the boards above. They are individually adjusted like telescopic table legs. Once all is well and the boards are in place they pour concrete over rebar lattices. Once set the "tables" are removed from below and the process repeated for every floor required.
In the building I work in if the suspended ceiling is removed you can see where the boards were.

2- I can see how it is difecult ti work with the steel crowded shear walls at the end of the video. I think they need to find a way to make their work easier, like fixing the horizontal steel while on ground.

Some special people working on this site...the guy in the white helmet (not hard hat) uses a leaf blower to clean the deck (great idea) but misses half the nails and debris and then later walks around aimlessly spraying the deck with something...the poor guy is lost....lol... then you got the guy at the end that doesn't know that if he takes his gloves off, it would be much easier to get that knot our of that chalk line...maybe he's afraid to get chalk on his hands.....Great video as always...
Using a leaf blower isn‘t a great idea, it‘s normal, and he‘s spraying the form with release agent to prevent the concrete from sticking to it.
He'd probably be disciplined if he removed his gloves.

Are all the closeups done afterwards? You have some really good camera equipment, because those closeups are of insane quality!
From what I can see, it appears that all the red/blue/green junction boxes are covered in concrete. Are they drilled/accessed somehow by the electricians later? Every so often I'll see one on top of the finished floor, but mostly they're gone.

Did you record these videos to a hard drive and if yes how much space did you need? Thank you for making these videos
The raw recorded video for one week typically takes somewhere around 4-6 TB. Once it is all edited down into an episode and unused footage discarded, the final archive for a week is typically somewhere around 400-900 GB, depending on the week.

All the little boxes they are screwing to the deck, I assume are mostly for electrical. With them all screwed down, how do they later remove the decking after the concrete is placed? Do the screws pull out of the deck boards or what?
Good question How are the deck boards removed ?
Pretty sure they are easy to remove and take no hard work. I didnt have time to see the exact procedure as I was in school.
the screws they use have no heads so as they drop boards the screws come with at least on the project I've been watching this is how its done
Another question: do the plywood forms on the underside of the floors come down too? It looks like the junction boxes are screwed into the plywood from the top; wouldn't that make it more difficult to remove the plywood later? Are the junction boxes meant to be accessed from above?
The plywood is removed later. You'll see that in later videos.

how do they clean out all that pipe and tubing at the end of a concrete pour?
After pumping the concrete, a sponge ball is pressed through the pipes a few times.
A soft sponge / ball is sucked back through the hose and pipes back to the hopper
What is all that piping/tubing they lay down in the flooring and then pour cement over? Is it for electrical?

One of my last projects as an inside wireman was a poured-in-place parking structure. The fact that the electrical boxes are all facing downward, the minimal number of electrical boxes for the square footage involved and the hand troweled, rough scallop finish of the floor pours leads me to believe that this portion of the building will be a parking structure. I have never seen trowel scallop finishing like that used in an occupied or equipment building area
@@newsnowfresno6873 I'll add that the boxes painted red are most likely for fire/smoke detection equipment wiring as the red color is specified by code/NEC in the US. I don't know what/if green is called out for by code, but could be emergency lighting possibly.
Have a question when they’re finished building the building and they removed the crane what do they put in its place? Do they put a elevator or do they just leave it hollow what do they do with that space?
Freedom flight In this case it’s not an elevator but shaft because they are not framing for it around the tower. My guess is that they come back in reinstall reinforcing rebar and pour a floor over each spot.

@@ericjenjohnson Could also be used as a central plumbing/electrical chase between floors, but I'm thinking that isn't likely because of the size of the crane base. The concrete pumping tower shafts could potentially be used for that as well as they're much smaller and probably better suited for that type of use.
They have left reinforcement dowels from all sides so later on after removing tower crane they will overlap more reinforcement with those dowel bars and will pour concrete

you do realize you are going to loose some of your view when that building is done..
i really wonder.. is there enough lateral strength in that to withstand a san andreas mega quake.. with what looks like the elevator core being the main structural component to prevent lateral movement.
The elevator shafts are always the most capable to resist a earthquake
This building appears to be built on eluvial land. Only the center of San Francisco’s actually rock. A lot is either eluvial or sedimental build up or out and out land fill. These lands tend to quiver like jello as opposed to the up/down or stretching motions of the rocks. Thus this building has no pilings. It instead has a massive mat foundation that the building floats on. Reinforced concrete is good for these kinds of buildings in seismic regions as long as you build in enough shear strength. As you surmise, the elevator core and emergency stairwells usually provide a lot of that strength as do the poured walls for the auto parking ramps in the back of the building. It’s a delicate balance between strong enough to not fall down but not so strong it cracks. I bet a lot of elemental analysis went into the engineering of the building. I don’t think it’s going up a bunch of floors. There just wasn’t enough foundation for it.
I hope he loses all his view he chooses to live several stories up in a major city he knew this would happen if construction were to happen in front of his window
Building across the street appears to be mostly commercial from what I can see, the end facing the new building under construction has signage indicating it's for "Studiomix S" and the other end is an AMC theater building with at least one iMAX theater in it. It appears (from the outside) to be 4 story with high ceilings on each floor based on the window layouts.

What’s up with new construction hard hats.
The new hats are more like climbers helmets. They have better straps to keep them on your head (so they dont fall onto the workers below you) and better protect against side impacts.
The older hats and suspensions had less side impact protection. Like if someone is moving a ladder and slams the end into the side of your head.
Who cares about the flatness of the concrete? There will be a screed added anyways ...
You always strive for perfection, because mistakes make for do-overs later that nobody wants. That is what gets you fired.

some work just has to get done to get it done. Some people feel there needs to be a rule and a regulation for every move and every step of the way but forget that in an overly regulated and controlled workflow like they want, nothing would ever get finished or at such a high cost that nobody can afford it any longer. But I guess it's nice to sit in a comfy chair and look for mistakes others make while working hard to earn a living to support their families.
