One-week construction time-lapse with closeups: Week 45 of the Ⓢ-series

  • Week 45 in the ongoing Ⓢ series, which follows the construction of a new 13-story senior living building in San Francisco. This is a #construction #timelapse with various closeups and "sub-time-lapses" at various speeds, condensing the week of December 7 - 12, 2020, into about 53 minutes.
    This episode is dominated primarily by curtain wall activity. In fact, it contains three types of curtain wall -- the upper glass, the pre-cast panels, and the lower glass. Although the lower glass is only seen in passing on the walkabout on Saturday. Of course, there are various other construction activities scattered throughout. Some extra-long (7+ hours) sub-time-lapses this time. Also, more interesting clouds.
    There are also three drives, approaching the site from three different directions. Kind of odd to have drives in a construction time-lapse, but what the heck.
    There's a walk-around on Saturday, including a bit of trivia about something that may be a bit unexpected to be seen in this sort of area. This comes about because the building is on the edge of a San Francisco neighborhood called "Cathedral Hill", because of the tendency in the past to build churches up on and around this hill.
    Hope you enjoy the episode!
    Chapters:
    00:00 - Mon (curtain wall, drive, slab edge patching)
    06:56 - Tue (two types of curtain wall, drive)
    13:48 - Wed (two types of curtain wall, ceiling, sprinklers)
    23:11 - Thu (two types of curtain wall, roof screen)
    37:28 - Fri (curtain wall, drive, truck turn)
    45:53 - Sat (walk around)
    51:40 - Closing and previews

    On the two floors having the glass walls fitted, I see that the props are still in supporting the floors above as the slabs cure. They are sealing the concrete with a primer to seal up the pours. In some floors they are just leaving it like that, others they are coming along a painting, and it seems in others they are applying a stucco like material to make them look flat, seamless, and then painting them. I guess each area is being used for different purposes so they all get different treatments.

      You can see pretty clearly starting at 39:22 which areas will be open all the way to the slab above, and which will have dropped ceilings (helps to view this a full screen on a large monitor). The areas near the windows with painted ceiling will be full height. Areas behind will have dropped ceilings.
      You can see the floor plans that were presented to the planning commission at commissions.sfplanning.org/cpcpackets/2019-04-01-HA-1001VN-PC%20PresvFINAL.pdf -- I have no clue how accurately this reflects what is actually being built. But if you look at the last floor plan on that file, which shows the residential floors, you can see the nice big units on the front, which seem to be the ones with full height ceilings.

    Man oh man, those glaziers are experts at PO'ing around - get to work late, take tea and lunch then leave work early. Fit as few panels as possible and don't work on weekends.
    Probably also complaining how bad the business is doing financially.

    • @skatesneakerlover
      @skatesneakerlover 3 роки тому +1

      @@musicteacherbuilder I don't know whats happening here, but it would seem as if they have all the panels they need for that floor right behind them. Also, while they're waiting for anything to cure, they can progress with weatherstrip installation on another floor. There is no excuse for getting to the job site late every day, still having tea and lunch and then leaving early when you have everything you need right behind you. No construction site I have ever been on is bid based. Every single contractor gets a project time line and told what must be installed when. Even before the first ground is dug they sign and accept the projects T & C's, the project time schedule as well as the massive penalties they will face if they don't comply or fall behind.
      Project and site managers walk around three times a week checking progress. If any contractor is not where he should be on the project timeline, he gets one warning. He messes up again, the owner of the business gets fined massively for every day his staff are not working or the items/work he should be contributing are not where they should be on the project timeline. There are also always contingencies and backup contractors worked into the project for exactly this reason. If staff of a particular contractor decide to go on strike or whatever else they decide not to come to work, another contractor is available immediately to take over and continue working.

    • @skatesneakerlover
      @skatesneakerlover 3 роки тому

      @@musicteacherbuilder Let's quickly dissect this absolute garbage you have just wasted your time typing....
      There is nothing uninformed about anything. Prepping and loading panels in, (as well as any other work required to be prepared for the next day's work) is done the night before, in any well run and controlled business, and normally by a team other than the installers. There is NO substitute for preparedness. You can CLEARLY see the workman PO'ing around when they eventually do get to the jobsite. Barely an hour after they've started, they stop working and then return again later, to maybe install 1 or 2 panels (which are there right behind them) then they stop again, for lunch, return later, install 2 or 3 panels and by 3pm they are gone. Does that look or sound like efficiency to you? Slow the footage down and you will see more time is spent talking and contemplating than actually doing any installation. And no, they are not being held up by other contractors in their way.
      Pretty bold and absurd of you to assume "I have no clue anything (sic)" when you don't even know me or where I've worked or still work. Your perception argument is a joke.
      Envy? Are you for real? There is absolutely NOTHING to envy here. I have personally seen 4 floors (over 3500 panels) of glazing be installed in a single day by qualified artisans on gigantic projects. This is a minuscule development project compared to the ones I've been involved in and that behaviour would not be tolerated - EVER! Sounds to me like you have some sort of interest vested here with those workman?
      Maybe where you live, the principle of "they won the bid they get what they get" and laziness and blatant stupidity is allowed, but in other countries, that behavior gets you fined heavily, permanently unemployed as well as unemployable for any future projects - as it rightly should. If you subscribe to that ridiculous thought pattern, then it speaks volumes about how well you work. Delays cost money. BIG money. If you sign a contract, you work the way you are told to work and you keep up to the project timeline, otherwise you don't sign the contract, you walk away and get out of the way for contractors that CAN work at the prescribed pace.
      You sound like a militant, loose canon, union representative with your "get what they get full stop" attitude. Would love to see how you survive a day on construction projects I've been involved in. Generally, these types are seen shouting their mouths for 2 hours at most, then never again......

    • @skatesneakerlover
      @skatesneakerlover 3 роки тому

      @@musicteacherbuilder LMFA....a pragmatist you say? But then you say you don't gripe if completion schedules are not met? Wildly rhetoric won't you say?
      I'm not in project management sweet pea. Very stupid assumption on your part there....My experience and qualifications put me on a MUCH higher authority level and pay grade than that, even though I will admit, I did start off there. I had to read your replies more than once, and TBH, I think you are typing the biggest load of BS I have ever read. You either haven't a clue what you're talking about, or you work for a ridiculously lax company that lets you get away with murder.
      You cannot possibly pay contracts on what they ask if they make the bid - you then have zero control over work flow. The correct way is you lay the timeline down, the rules to be followed, and the budgeted project sub division expense.
      You're not understanding what I said about payment - I know they don't get paid hourly, BUT, by them slacking, delays people that need to come behind them, and can cause the project to go over schedule if they suddenly run into a problem. When they rush to catch up then they do rubbish workmanship that has to be removed and rectified - more delays and damage to fixtures. Attitudes go south because someone dared complain about what time they start working or whatever else. All the while, whilst the developer or owner's investment is losing millions of whatever currency daily. But that's ok hey, I mean, they're only the glaziers right? You're saying you pay them and as long as they make the deadline "nothing else matters". No dear friend, it doesn't work like that, not in any 1st world construction business anyway.
      What you're saying is, "I'll pay you your asking price and you can work at your own pace, as long as you complete by the end of the allocated timeline" - absolute BS! See what the architect, developer and eventual owner of the premises thinks about that attitude. And when they fall wildly behind and their snag list is 100 pages long and the developer can't hand over because they still have so much to complete?
      Does not matter at all you say? Oh really? So delays due to lazy workman are fine when they start impacting other suppliers and contractors because their own work is behind?
      You are quite rightly a loose canon, as you have admitted. That crew must surely belong to you seeing as you've got so hard and stiff and defensive, seemingly trying to protect them, and you just love the "full stop" anecdotes. If so, I'll be watching them with a hawk eye from now on.
      They (the other crew) would never cope with working under me - the team I work with knows the difference between actually working individuals and those that put on a song and dance to pretend to work. "Envy because they are getting paid. Nothing else matters at all?" are you human or just deliberately playing stupid? We work on and commission a project with Swiss watch reliability and accuracy. Have been doing so for at least the last 40 years. Maybe your way works for you, the company you work for couldn't care less about anything and you're allowed to get away with it on small insignificant projects, but when you're a global player like the team I work with, none of what you've said so far would even dare to be spoken in any conversation.
      Just as what there are heavy penalties for going over project allocated time, there are massive incentives and bonuses for completing ahead of schedule with a successful sign-off and handover. Maybe not where you work or in your country, but definitely in other countries.
      If you're happy that this crew is working (according to you) efficiently, then great. Every country and construction industry will have their slow and useless players, but on the other end of the stick you will have the men, the REAL men and woman that put in more, work harder and faster than the norm or what's expected because they are masters at what they do, and they have pride, and they also know that no job site or contract is guaranteed and that if they want future projects, they need to wind their necks in and get the job done. That's why you have some countries that are known for outstanding quality and workmanship and record breaking building projects, and others that don't even get spoken about. And, in this industry - EVERYTHING else matters. Full Stop!

      @@musicteacherbuilder Not "triggered" at all. Actually very relaxed and calm, but firstly, far more mature to use that kind of immature vernacular and secondly way past being affected by incompetent rhetoric. I DO know better, because I have been there and done that, and have the years of experience and the qualifications to prove it. I have co-designed and built projects you would only ever dream about being part of. Also dealt with many people of your calibre where nothings ever wrong until it is so badly wrong that its as obvious as the nose on their face.
      So no, you're not "triggering" or affecting me in any way regardless of whatever badly spelt and typed comeback you may have.
      "It will always have some who work hard and some who do not" - quite rightly so, and those who do not will very quickly find themselves unemployed and as a result, will suffer as they must.
      "I guarantee you they are not, or they would be replaced" Now you're issuing guarantees about people you know nothing about? And a master in rhetoric aren't you? "I just don’t sit and snipe other projects" - but you'll quite happily sit (like a fly defending his pile of faeces) keep repeating that "nothing else matters" and then snipe me for my much higher work ethics, when clearly you have never worked a day on a project where work flow and performance is measured and managed like those I am familiar with. You must surely be a junior project manager or an intern then. Maybe even a sophomore.
      "I find ways to avoid what I do not like on my own" - let's see how you avoid this then as it's quite obvious you don't like this or understanding that in other more competent and advanced industries, this work standard is totally unacceptable. Let's see you put your money where your mouth is.......

      @@musicteacherbuilder Carus, be my guest and self justify if it gives you any sort of satisfaction or boosts your manhood. Seeing as you were still in school 5 years ago, you obviously have very little, if any, experience in the fundamentals of large scale construction. Stick to designing houses while I complete 10 million square feet shopping centers.
