    The smaller buttons weren't a bad design, although I concur it's debatable and personal preference territory. I very much appreciate that the top row is different, makes it easy to know where exactly your fingers are with a claw

      It's a decent controller, but it feels a touch awkward and not as premium as Retro-bits wired Clone 6-button genesis controller.
      Reaching for the bottom 3 buttons, or more like 'C' feels a bit off, since you have to arch your thumb slightly inwards since there isn't enough plastic on the side to grip on to. This isn't an issue at all with the OG/RB 6-button.
      Their N30 2.4g controller is really good, but i can't stand how it looks with it's nearly all-black design. Their SN30 2.4g doesn't look anywhere near as good as the original SNES wired controller either. :P Haven't tried the latter since the 'classic' version is going for $150 CAD off eBay. I also have 8bitdo's 2.4g PC engine controller, and it looks and feels excellent, but I've heard that it has latency issues when wirelessly connected to the Analogue Duo.

    Why don't you talk about the fact that the D-Pad is mounted on a fucking rubber dome instead of a rigid pivotal axe ? This resulting in pressing unexpectedly DOWN and RIGHT for instance, interprated as DOWN-RIGHT when doing a quarter of a circle. I miss 1/3 to 2/3 of my hadokens in SF2 because of this, while I never had this problem with the original Genesis II pad.
    Not mentioning the small size of the D-PAD, mimicking NES/SNES/N64 ones, while copying GENESIS one, but failing to achieve a comfortable concave version with sharp angles and large place to correctly register our thumb moves. The M30 is a failure : I was disappointed nearly 20mn after buying it, and was enraged that not a single of the nerds fanboys on Internet mentioned the stupid rubber dome.

    8BitDo should make a controller with six face button layout AND microswitched stick (from their Neo Geo pad), this would be the best solution for a fightpad imo and I'm sure it would be very popular. I'm not a big fan of floating Sega style d-pads btw.

    I wanted to enjoy this controller as It really does feel good plus its kinda sturdy, but I've got pretty big hands, even hadoukens were a problem when the crease of my thumb rests on the dpad instead of the thumb itself, shame.

      Same. I was looking for a replacement to my Genesis 6-button pad from Retrobit but the 8bitdo is just too small to be comfortable..I really want to love it, since the dpad is one of the most accurate and high quality reproductions of a Sega Saturn dpad, down to the malleable plastic (similarly, a Saturn pad just doesn't fit right in my hands either). Retrobit pads actually use the exact same membrane on the inside as well, no change in malleability of the membrane's rubber or anything. Also, the face buttons on the 8bitdo aren't shaped like the original SEGA design that guides your thumb between rows and makes pressing multiple buttons on different rows easier. For now though, I am doomed to continue playing on the Retrobit 8-button Genesis model 2 pad.

    Great review. I can confirm the 2.4 gz does work on pc with the USB cable. Thats the only way I use it. You may have to switch modes, though I dont remember if the 2.4 gz version has modes like the bluetooth version, but it does work wired. Reason I got both version was because I later found out the 2.4 gz apparently had lower input lag than the bluetooth version. Cant really confirm but that was my reasoning. Hard to test that. These are still my top 2D controllers. Awesome d-pad and the turbo functionality for all buttons is very useful too.

      @spyghetti 10 місяців тому +1

      I have two of the bluetooth M30's and the input lag is very noticeable on the switch, pc, raspi pi.. I kind of regret going bluetooth but I've always liked the Saturn style 6 button, although I have an old wired version USB one. I have not tried the M30 bluetooth with adding a cable directly to the pc, would be a decent controller if that alleviates some input lag, but defeats the purpose of wireless especially for something like a switch.

    • @theconsolekiller7113
      @theconsolekiller7113 10 місяців тому

      Ah, ok. Interesting. I have only tried it wireless a FEW times on Switch and maybe briefly on PC. For me its just not worth the occasional dropped signals I would get. Fucked me over on some hard games, so I use controllers like these wired usually, and also because wired is supposed to have less input lag
      Might consider trying the cheaper 2.4 gz version of the M30, dont know if it supports wireless on your platform of choice, but could also just get a real long usb C for a responsive experience on either. I have USB and original Saturn pads, and I actually like the M30 pad alot better, which surprised me. Turbo is huge for me too with the variety of games I go through.@@spyghetti

    The M30 2.4g version also works on android. When plugged in, it behaves like a weird xbox controller (dpad is somehow mapped to the left stick). But it works. It also works in emulation station this way.
    Also, just found out, this controller has 3 modes.
    Hold Home+Up = xinput mode. (you can use the dongle on an android device this way!, even though it's not advertised as android compatible, it works)
    Hold Home + left = Switch pro controller mode. Though this mode seems like it has reversed buttons. the A and B buttons are reversed. (They made it so pressing the "A" button which is first, activates the "A" button on a nintendo layout, which is normally second. Same for X and Y buttons.)
    Hold Home + Down = d-input. Guess this is only useful for the genesis mini console? I would never use this mode personally. It's the least compatible mode with other devices.
    Then you have the 8bitdo neogeo controller, which also works on android just fine with the dongle. But it's advertised to be compatible with android only when using bluetooth, not the dongle.

    would be perfection if it was larger, the edges of the controller went outward instead of slightly inwards, the face buttons were the same size, and if the side with the face buttons didn't have that concave design.

    That caved in thing is awful design for the buttons. Wish it had L2 and R2 buttons and a more robust d-pad that ensures accurate registering of presses. I'll wait for the v2 I think.

    I got the black version for use on my KinHank Emuelec super console X3, and it has not been a very successful endeavor.
    I have an 8bitdo ultimate C wired controller that works perfectly, but I simply can’t get this controller to work wirelessly with this system, every time I try to set up the controller for wireless it won’t register the right D directional button and I can’t continue after that. I can only get it generally working wired, but even then it’s hit or miss.
    Very frustrating.

    I tried this controller just last month! Your impressions of the form factor and ergonomics are spot on. I tried it for about 2 weeks of daily gaming. For my larger hands, I couldnt find a comfortable grip on it, and no matter what I did, my hands would eventually cramp up around my palm after an hour of play.
    Your technique with the dpad of focusing on the edges seemed like the best bet to me too. But, after spending a month daily driving the 8bitdo and the Retrobit reissue of the Genesis 8-button pad, I feel that it's more effective and comfortable to "pull" the dpad outwards from the concave circle in the center with the tip/middle of your thumb as opposed to trying to press the outer part of the cross with the bottom portion of the thumb.
    You can also get a good grip on pressing 2 cross directions at the same time for diagonals using the center-pulling method. This might not work for everyone's hands, since the dpad on the 8bitdo is noticeably closer to the edge of the controller than an original Sega 8-button pad which places it further away from your palm (in a spot i find more comfortable for my hands).

    if you're going to learn "claw grip" why even bother using a controller? Just get a stick, leverless or lever. Both going to feel 100x better than that monstrosity of a grip.
