A quick task in a bee yard can sometimes turn into hours especially if someone forgets to put things as they should be. We all do this but my dad is famous for putting boxes on with no frames, not enough frames, the wrong size frames.... It makes things interesting to say the least. Under normal circumstances he usually catches them before they get this far along. I do this myself occasionally and I sometimes enjoy the challenge that comes with the mini cut out. On this day however, I was running short on time and could only do a partial box cleanup and not even a good one at that. The final cleanup/cut out was done the following week and may be shown in an upcoming video.
All this footage is from April 2016. Dad is doing much better but still looking toward some surgeries and can't do what he used to. He is still in his bee yard almost daily though.
The cardboard nuc boxes shown here are a pretty good affordable option to prepare nucs for sale or transport. Cardboard nucs are, of course, not designed for long term use. You'll see some of the problems with them and why you should get your bees out of them and into a hard nuc or more permanent full size Langstroth box in fairly short order.
Our quick look at the Flow frame is not in any way an endorsement of Flow hives of Flow frames. It was just an opportunity to handle one of these new to the industry inventions. This was a the second time I'd seen them but I've never tried them out. One of my UA-cam friends Artisan Tony had some Flow frames this past season. Apparently they don't fit a standard Langstroth box and Tony made some modifications. His video is linked below.

I hope your dad continues to heal and can keep tending his bees. It's so obvious how much he loves his bees.
That he does. Thanks
Glad to see your dad up and about.
Thanks He's moving slow but moving none the less.
That piece you said you were going to eat. OMG that looked so yummy! I was all drooling :P
Oh it was good. lol
Thanks for spending your time putting this video together for us Randy. Hope your dad stays safe. That was some good footage seeing everyone out in the bee yard. Take care
Thanks Tim. Wish we had time to do more.
I like your dad.....Oh I just been jogging
He's a regular comedian. lol
628DirtRooster he had me laughing
Awww your dad looks so tired and like he is in alot of pain. I am over 60 and am starting to feel the so called golden years pain. Arthritis is a pain, literally.
try moringa plant-it works.
Hope your Dad gets better, sucks to get old! My Dad is back in the Hospital again...only time will tell! Kinda thought that hive looked ready to swarm...like to think I'm learning something about bees! LOL! Great stuff!
Haha you're picking it up.
Hope everything is OK with your dad. Nothing life threatening I hope.
Thanks Randy!

I got stung 15 times just watching.
LOL Don't look them in the eye.
I knew there had to be a trick to it. Hope your father gets back on his feet good.
MyHollowpoint Me too. He's too young to be falling apart.
"I was out jogging". Gotta love dads.
We used to jog together when I was a kid but he quit when I was about thirteen or so.
I will pray for your Dad.At home and in church. And with you doing all that extra work I will pray for you also.your friend and dirt rooster and Mr Ed fan.
At 5:10 I knew you were gonna eat that before u even said a word! Your body language said it all as u grabbed it ! And I thought the same thing...my lord that looks juicy good!
LOL
hey man I've been watching your videos, love em
Thanks for watching PB
Hope your dad gets well soon.
Probably going to have a shoulder surgery before Christmas, then the other and then a knee.
Everybody keeps telling me the shoulder is the worst. Take care of him.
Buckrun11 It'll be a tough road. They want to replace one of his shoulders.
did he say he was out jogging? LOL!
In his dreams. ;)
All the best to your dad and glad to hear he's out daily keepin busy
Getting old can be rough.
Sorry to learn of your dad's health/mobility difficulties. But did see your addendum, stating he's improved! Thank you for stepping in to help. You have kind heart. Thanks for allowing God to use you. As for above video, I approve of that message! :-) God bless, brother!
Thanks so much JD. He's still having trouble getting around but at least he's still walking.
SOLD 350 dollars that a good deal > i bet there at less 9 gallon> my guess about 14 gallons
The original Australian Flow Hive frames come assembled. Great stuff. A bit pricey for some but at all costs avoid the Chinese fakes!
I like the idea of foundation less beekeeping, however it takes supervision, knowledge, and a degree of just plain luck.
that looks fun he heee. I hope ur dad gets feeling better those knee are a pain! I never use plastic in a hive, lucky to get a year out of em. cause of heat.... Cheers DR
Glad to see you back in UA-cam circles.
Thank brother
I just love the irony that apparently the name of the brand that makes those boxes is named Stinger, I never noticed that in your other videos somehow. Talk about self-fulfilling prophecies.
Haha That is our brand. We have them branded by the factory.
Thanks for the Dad update, got really concerned when he stepped out of the car, Since it's been nearly 5mo, Hope he is MUCH BETTER today... Send him BIG HUGS
Randy I will pray for your dad. He is very blessed to have a son like you. You also are in my prayers
I saw a huge slab dripping in honey, and all I wanted to do was take a big bite.
That's the right move.
XD Love your videos! A family friend keeps bees (or at least he used to).
He told me to dip my finger in the food he was giving them then stick it in the hive. I chickened out but after watching your videos I bet I would've be fine
70 pounds is pretty heavy. Good job.
Heavy and a little awkward to pick up.
I just recently found your channel and lost my dad but it's good to see y'all share this hobby.
Sorry he's gone. Glad to be able to spend time with mine for a while longer I hope.
My mom is in a similar situation and we are working on getting her a mobility scooter. I'm not sure if that would be an option for your dad but it could help him get around and not get hurt.
He has one that he got when he had some ankle surgeries two years ago but he doesn't like to use it. He's torn up half the door ways in his house. lol
I'd like to say that your beekeeping has really inspired me to work more on my animals and try to make things flourish, not just survive. You have earned my subscribe, sir.
Thanks so much Natalia. Good luck with your animals.
As someone that lives in Florida I got most of what the guy in cutoffs said, but it was challenging my comprehension of the serious southern accent.
LOL!!
Love that frameless brood box...leave it up to Pops for some extra curricular excitement while he's out jogging. Thanks for the vids
If I didn't know better I'd think he did it just for a video. ;)
"I've just been out jogging" lol. Y'all are so funny. Love watching the channel.
sad to see yer dad hurtin', but he IS still vertical, & he appears to have retained his sense a humour. hope he is better soon.
Thanks man. He is still upright. :)
That flow frame sure looks like it has the potential to be a propolyzed mess.
Sorry to hear about Pops, but that cane sure makes him look distinguished.
Ha! He'll be glad to hear it.
Have you ever ran into killer bees?
thank you for the update on your dad - sending you both well wishes
Thanks Retro Raven
I pray your dad gets well and robust again👍👍
Thank you Bill. We took him took him to the movies to see Jesus Revolution this afternoon. Now he's home recovering from the outing.
I just purchase my first flow hive 2!!!!!! So excited. The Original Flow Frame do fit perfectly into a Langstroth Box. If it does not, it's a Knock off.
New to beekeeping, I built most my own hive boxes ETC. primarily fitting 10 frame deep langstroth hives. Now waiting for next swarm season to try trap my first Bees. In meantime, I'm curious to check out the kind of frame shown ( 19:14 timestamp) Can anyone able to share link where to buy one? also somewhere I seen a Hive feeder in a similar style, But can not remember where? Anyone who can share link to buy either or both type frames, Thankyou in advance.
I've never tasted honey or honeycomb. You can't get anything real where I live. It just looks incredible. Your dad seems like a good man. I'm sorry to see him not feeling 100%. I will be praying for your dad.
Hope your dad is doing better
Thanks Travis. He is recovering very slowly.
It would be nice if you took a bit longer to brush the bees off so you don't have to squash & kill as many when repositioning the upper box. : (
You mean the ones on top of the plastic queen excluder. There is space in there. No worries. :)
Lol well being a man getting up there in the years (61) and having a knee replacement and heart stint I know how yer ol dad is feeling. Spend all the time u can with him cause u never know what the lord has in store for u. God bless u all, I sure enjoy watching.
Flow hive expert. Where's the hole. Good luck
This video is a great diversion on election night, interesting too.
That's kind of what I was thinking. I almost waited to upload it but I knew I couldn't watch a solid day of speculation and arguing so I figured most other people wouldn't either.
What does it mean when you say they are getting ready to swarm? Thank you.
+Doug Davis When a hive gets strong enough half of them leave with the old queen and the other half stay and raise a new queen.
I'm slowly catching on to the terminology.
Sorry your dad is having a hard time. I ended up losing 3 hives. I'm not crying because they were all 3 genes from my "weak" hive. I have 2 hives left, my original "strong" hive, and the split I made off it early 2016. Hope your dad gets healed up soon.
I'll be glad when he's able to get around again.
Glad you've got some good ones going into winter. Update video coming?
Hey rooster I cut squares for the entrance and the other side ,1inch foam in between the front entrance cardboard and the framerest cardboard just unfold it ,shove it down and then fold it back and it jams the walls together closer so the frame rest is tighter on the actual frame where it's not wanting to fall over, I just took a razor knife it took about a minute tops but I use them for swarm traps and I also is them for splits for a couple weeks I even got some that I wrap the top with thin metal to make a roof so they last
Ol boy cut off his Jean's and made them into Daisy Dukes😂😂
Hope Dad Dirt Rooster gets back up and doing better soon.
Say what you will about the Flow frames, but it has got a lot more people interested in Bees, and that is never a bad thing.
Thanks Alexander
Flow marketing got the attention. :)
beautiful oooo my mouth is just watering
How do u keep from drowning the bottom box when cleaning up those messes, I amnew and. Seem to made way too many mistakes
i hope your dad doing ok i hope he get better soon ty for what you guys do for us if it was not for you guys we cant get any honey i got me some tonight the real honey to i love the real stuff not the stuff you get from the store its to diluted out i say way to much water in it get the real stuff guys you love it
3:11 haha
:)
sending prayers to your dad. and you do a wonderful job I love watching you.
My dealings with elderly is to get a mobile walker. It's a 4 wheel walker and YES he can use it outdoor. Bit of a challenge on uneven grass etc, but much more stability of 4 frame wheels and he can sit on it when he wants. They're about $90. The thing about elderly is that they DO NOT WANT TO ADMIT that they need it and it's a sign that they're older and decline. The thing is it will prevent a trip/fall and hospital time, so weigh the Pro's and suck it up. Getting old isn't for sissy's. I hope you encourage him.
Thanks Zak. I've been trying to get him to come to the gym with me for some really light weight workouts but he's not going for it. He's got on old Celebrity Pride scooter he bought used and he keeps it charged but doesn't think he needs it yet.
shouldn't you encourage the swarm? Few months down the road that's another order for removal, another day another dollar
God bless your pap, 👊🏼
Thank you
I had to take care of a family member.. Your all he has at that time he mite never say thanks but without family where would we be..
love it all, ive seen many of the conversions you speak of, will save my money for now and buy more woodware , i dont mind the ol' fashioned way
I love the old fashioned way. :)
That big piece of comb that fell was just dripping with honey!
It looked so delicious!
I've never tasted new natural comb.
But man it looks just buttery and delicate.
Dude! Love your channel. It's like crack. I'm need a bump of honey
It is so good and there are so many different flavors even within one hive.
Those flow hives are a great idea, with nice equipment, BUT
The problem I’ve found, is your supposed be able to tap off honey, which it does nicely, without getting into the hive.
The problem is you can’t tell if it’s full all the way across, and MORE IMPORTANTLY,
Without taking them out, if you can’t see if they are totally capped, then you drain what’s there, and it has too much moisture content, then it ferments,
If you have to get in the hive, it really defeats the whole design purpose, nice idea, but I paid $800 for a system, that I quit using after the first season , because my jars fermented.
Wow! Great info to know. Thanks for commenting.
We know your smoker is a favorite tool. But the trucking sticker "DIESEL FUEL ONLY" is a poor visual for new keepers thinking its OK to use.
No danger there. If they can get a smoker to work on diesel fuel then they have accomplished quite a feat worthy of study.
Still haven't had a single drop of rain. Nothing since August 25 and that was only 1/4". More than 80 days without rain here in southern Polk County. Shattered our old record of 46 days. I've lost 5 of 12 hives even feeding them. Really don't have anything in the forecast either. My pond is down about 8 feet. My ducks and chickens have quit foraging and just sit by the feeder. No birds or insects anywhere with the exception of flies. Grass is like walking on a Brillo pad! Wild fires, smoke and dust fill the air. It's eerie! Go a 150 miles in any direction and there is no drought! Water rationing has begun just south of us. I feel like we're living in some sort of alternate reality here in south Polk. Pray for us, brother.
On the brighter side regarding cardboard nuc boxes. I went over to Jim's Honey Wonderland back in April and brought back 2 nucs in brand new Jester EZ Nuc boxes. It was still pretty chilly so I put them in the back seat of my Ram 3500. Pearl, Ms to Tuscaloosa, no problem but then I began to notice a congregation gathering on the back window. By Birmingham, I could barely see out the rear window and had a pretty fair conference going on the passenger side windows. By the time I crossed the Georgia line, I was running my defroster on HIGH to keep some visibility through the front windshield. I hit US27N at Bremen and for the next 18 miles to the house, I ran as fast as that Cummins would go daring a trooper to pull me over! True story! Got home and moved the frames to boxes with no problem and all the bees followed. Not a single sting. I couldn't find any issue with the box to explain how 5000 bees ended up as my co-pilots!
LOL Man that ride home story is fuuunnny. I hope Y'all get rain soon. We just got enough this past week that they lifted the burn ban. Been dry as Arizona down here too.
I'm not a big fan of the Jester boxes either although I do have some around the house. They're better than nothing.
I had just about the same problem with the jester ez nuc box that I got this year.
I ended up with some bees in the car and a lot more after i got home. I set the box down for 15 minutes with the cover still closed before putting them in a10 frame brood box so the bees would calm down. I noticed a lot of bees flying around ......yeap.....our bees.
First off they only had 1 small piece of tape on it. Second there was no inner cover. I do not know about your box, but mine has round holes the size of a pencil in them and I belief this is to tie round wooden dowels to them or pushing round wooden dowels through them to keep the boxes spaced so the bees will stay cool.....look at each of the small sides. I know that bees will be able to come through a hole the size of a pencil.
I lost the queen and I still suffering because of it and the supplier did not care....last time I will get bees from them. Last years queen and bees from them was junk too.
I will be praying that your dad gets better. I like watching him and you both work hives.
Much appreciated Joseph.
Bee keeping has more or less come to the end here in Ireland until March 2017........Terrible problems with wasps in early September. We were plagued by them and unfortunately lost a few weaker nucs as I was away for the first 2 weeks!! Bummer
I didn't realize Y'all were on a similar schedule to us. It's fall here now.
Another well done video. Thanks for taking the time to put these vids together..
Same to you. Thank you for watching my channel.
I’ve heard that the flow hive is good for areas that have no cold seasons, as the bees can’t seem to fill the hive.. I get great honey from our flea market, my favourite was mint, unfortunately that field was destroyed, so now I enjoy blueberry, clover
Flow has a lot of problems they don't really show in their beautifully produced videos. Very neat concept though.
What a mess, but look at all that uncapped honey. Take a bit of it!!!
Dang! I thought that was me falling out of my chair, but it was your camera (lol) Ditto on your dad. It's good to see him up and at it. Tell him we're putting in a bee removal video request for next spring.
Haha. I'll let him know.
When I saw your dad's mess up with the frameless box, I couldn't help but say to myself, "Sounds like my dad." First task this year was fixing a hive that he put a brood box with an attached bottom board on upside down. Had to sacrifice the brood they'd started and feed the honey back to them. It was a huge mess!
But fun though right?
Hope America decides to protect the bee's second amendment right today.
I hope for world peace :P
Haha Me too.
Lost your hive tool! I've done that in the past. I've now got six strewn around the place.
Haha I do the same. I bought four more last week. I keep leaving them at different people's bee yards.
What's your thoughts on the flow grams? I subscribed to a couple other bee channels and seems everyone looks at them different, some good some not so much. Enjoy your videos and I'm learning lots as I go. Never know I might try my hand at it one day. Hope your dad is feeling better. Take care
I'm in the not so much category. You can buy several complete hive setups for the cost of one flow super with frames.
Oh man, when you lifted the super and that honey filled comb came to light... Just an awesome sight. Hope your Dad's feeling/doing better. May be time for a new knee or two.
They're working on his shoulders first but I think there may be a knee in his future.
I'm sure I can find it but... how do you get new bees into a new hive (nuke?).... as in physically how.... won't hey fly off?
Like as you put them in... do you have frames in the hive before you put them in or after?
Check out vids on making splits or hiving packages.
Ok.... thanks? Can you give me a link? The reason I asked for direct info was because I home school 1st, 4th and 6th graders, have a farm and am the sole adult in my house making me a taxi lol in have about 1 hr of free time per day 365 days a year. So finding info take quite some time lol
I guess I should find someone closer to have as a "go to guy" so to speak lol. Sorry just trying to get a head before I get bees.
@@charlseyoft2273 ua-cam.com/video/vda5woc5NNg/v-deo.html
Those fresh light-yellow combs look really appetizing. I don't even care if there's no honey in them, I just want to take a bite!
They're good to chew on.
Honey always tastes best when it's straight from the hive.
hey, rooster, when you put the lids on does it just squish the bees that are on the lip or what?
If you move too fast some will buy the farm. If you kind of wiggle the lid and put it on slowly most of them will move. Or you can smoke, brush or scrape them off as you put the lid on.
All the best to your Dad -- I'm about his age and having leg problems myself. I was just wondering what the purpose of the spacer over the top of the deep honey super was for?
He's using them kind of like an inner cover for head space, for ventilation, to place food or caged queens....
Missed hearing from you. Sorry to hear Wilfred isn't feeling well. He'll be back running circles around you in no time.
You mean driving his Pride scooter in circles around me?
Glad your dad is doing better. Those look like the cardboard boxes from Mann Lake. Just so you know, if you turn the short frame rest to the inside the frames will sit right in the box. You have to bend them inward a little sometimes as well. We use lots of those for selling nucs and they have worked pretty good for us..
I'll look at that.
Hope your dad has been recovering well since. Bouncing back does get harder with age. Great to see you guys catching balls for him.
He's out running around somewhere. Must be feeling OK.
Darn, did he chew through the leash again?
Great videos, man! Nice to see you working with your dad. Instead of using the smoker...try giving the bees tiny cigarettes?
Nah, turns their teeth yellow. ;)
What time of year was this filmed? My hives are going into winter mode. No drones. No swarms. Plenty of hive beetles. Slidell area.
This was early April.
Hope your dad gets better soon, it's nice you can help him out..
I do all I can. He always has lots going on so he normally needs more hands anyway. lol
Ya a TOP TOP BLOKE... great to see you giving your Father a hand, I hope he is on the mend... he's a great man! Take care 👍😎👌
Rooster, the flap that the frame sits on you have behind the other flap with the bend top , that's why its not working out. It's just a straight length of cardboard and it always pushes towards the frames to keep them from falling. First frame in is a PITA but after that they work fine, I use them all the time they work well.
Yeah, we use a lot of them. They won't hold heavy frames well at all. But they transport bees and they aren't meant to be a full time box so I guess they serve their purpose.
Didn't know if you knew that you had the box built incorrectly ? Saw you struggling with it thought i'd help you figure it out. FYI the flap you where trying to set the frame on is not what the frame sits on, its what holds the frames from shifting front to back, the top bar should rest against it just as in a normal hive body.like I said the flap that goes under the frame to hold it up is behind that, you built it backwards hence why it didn't work. Peace brother beekeeper!
I hope your Dad heals quick. He looks like he needs a 4-wheeler. At least he`s got a right fine son to help him.
Haha He does need a four wheeler. He needs a CanAm 1000R.
He`d never tend his bees if he had one of those. lol
Sucks about your dad, hope he heals up well. Thanks for taking he time!
Thanks Bill
11:31 LOL , Thanks Dirt Rooster -I so needed that ..Man I get tickled at ur videos , even though been watching few years now.
Thanks for this-got a similar problem and now i know how to go! Cheers.
Awe gramps love him hes so cute💚🙏
Tell me why you only have 2-3 sides on your tops??? I have never seen that up here in WI
There are two basic styles. The ones that fit like a shoe box top are called telescopic or telescoping covers. The ones that are missing the lip on the long sides are called migratory covers and they are usually used by commercial beekeepers. We use a little of both.
God Bless your pops , every minute cherish , that’s for sure , wouldn’t bee who I am without mine 👍🏽
Has your dad been doing bees for a long time? Is that why you got interested in bees? I'm praying for him.
We both started about seven years ago. My brother got us started.
Thank you for sharing your dads status with all of us. I hope he gets well, and has enough energy so that the two of you can go out and “wrangle” some swarms. You two make a funny duo. I enjoy the bantering that exists between the two of you. God bless you and your family. 🙏
This is touching to come take care of your father's bees barehanded, bareheaded, etc. I think I understand what a super is. It seems to bee an extender to create more space. A nucleus is a closed box that people can use as a starter?
Yep, pretty much.
Good vid Dirt. Was that the hand that stole that Hunk O" Honey, lol?
LOL You know it probably was. The bees were giving a thumbs down for that move. ;)
If your father isn't as mobile as he used to be, but still wants to keep bees, how about investing in a Langstroth top bar kind of hive for him? He wont have to lift heavy boxes, just individual frames. The frames from his traditional Langstroth hives will still fit the top bar type of hive. So if he spins them to extract the honey, the frames will still fit the extractor machine if he has one.
Not a bad Idea. He does have a mechanical 30 frame extractor.
Good idea. He does have a mechanical extractor.
I thought you must have forgot to put frames in that box
You know it! I guess we can blame it on being too busy. :) Hope you're doing well Mr. Don.
we all get busy keep a eye on them
Working on getting more organized for 2017.
