- I'm on the bikepacking adventure from Miami to Key West. At this time, I'm attempting to get to the Florida Keys through South Miami bike trails and gravel roads and skip the Homestead altogether. Come along for my three-day bikepacking adventure to the Key West.
I love biking in Florida and you make me want to be down there so bad. Love watching videos of all of the roads I've been on. So serene.
You should definitely come to Florida, it's beautiful here. Thanks for watching 🙂
Another great adventure
Thank you for watching. Two more videos two come of this trip.
Watching this video brings calm and feels relaxing, a big thumbs up for this nice shoot.Have a nice day

Thank you for watching 🙂
Thank you! Love this video.
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it 🙂
Wow kudos to you for taking such an adventurous path!
We love the keys 💙
Last time I rode through Homestead but at this time I wanted to try out those nice South of Miami gravel roads. Thank you for watching 🙂
wow so cool that you ran into Angel "the bird watcher"! like an angel. haha
He recognized me because of my UA-cam channel and we both are other birder friends. 👍
Great ride, sunny blue skies! Angel is a super guy and awesome birding guide. Crazy that you ran into him like that!
I remember you told me about a guy named Angel. It was great to meet him, middle of nowhere. I think you told him about me too because he recognized me first. Ha-ha, what are the chances. He was very helpful too and gave his phone number if I need anything. 🙂
Awesome ride Thomas… look forward to the rest of the trip!
I'm glad you enjoyed it. Two more days to come. Thanks 😊
Thomas I didn’t even know this was available. Beautiful trip.
Yes, there are couple of different ways to get to the Florida Keys 👍
Wow so beautiful it was a great visual tour.. lovely place 👍🏻
Thank you :)
Great video, beautiful scenery and weather! 🌞
Thank you for watching 🙂
Enjoyed your ride to Key Largo! So beautiful, all that warmth and sunshine:) Loved the views from the bridge! Thank you for sharing your journey!
Thank you for following along. This was the first day. Two more to come. 😊
Very Nice, like. Have good day.
Thank you. Have a good day you too 🙂
Great day 1 and some luxury gravel👍
Yes, I wanted to get to the Keys by the gravel back roads at this time. It was nice gravel. 👍
Nicely done! FYI - the white 'ghost bike' is usually a bicycle roadside memorial, in case you didn't know. Looking foward to the rest of your trip! ~Mark
Wow, I didn't know that. That's interesting 🤔
Amazing video, beautiful bike ride and scenery. Thank you for the upload :)
Thank you for watching 🙂
Nice work Thomas. Very brave of you to ride Card Sound Road. Stay safe
There are no shoulder but traffic was not busy and cars gave me plenty of space. Thanks for watching 🙂
What a great ride!! I'll think about it when I take my ride tomorrow in NYC's 40 degree weather :) Love the channel!
Winter months are great in Florida. It's dry , sunny and temps are perfect. Right now is the best time of year.here. thank you for your nice comment. Take care. 🙂
Impressive , the distances you cover on a bike. ! Liked the trees..
I enjoy long distance rides. Thank you 😊
Amazing man!
Thanks 😊
i enjoy watching you enjoy places i've ridden, walked, hiked, fished, hunted, etc..... seeing my area thru your eye makes me appreciate them more.
Glad you're saying that. Do you live in South Florida? 😊
@@FollowThomas yes, I live in north miami. I assume the train in the video was at the amtrak station in Miami. I'm about 7 or 8 miles northeast of it.
@@russellely1021 yeas I took Amtrak to Miami and started riding.
Happy birthday, sorry it's later!
Good capture my friend
Thank you for watching
We loved the back road adventure with you since we never get to see that from our RV. Great video...we'll definitely keep following.
Thank you I appreciate that. It is kind a fun to go by the back roads but I had to backtrack to find a way. 🙂
Great cycling bro!!!👍🏻
It's beautiful here in Florida Keys. Thanks for watching 🙂
Like the first road that lots of thick trees w/hanging vines look like root of the trees, this’s breathtaking biking thank you for the taking us along w/you my good friend May you be safe. And through all heavenly beings protect you w/ur friends lovely family 🤝✌️❤️🌎
Miami has lots of cool trees, love them :)
Crazy bike paths in the beginning lol. Beautiful area to bike! You biked a lot in one day. Great idea to bike to Key Largo!
This is my second time to ride Miami to Key West. Last year I took Highway 1 from Homestead to Key Largo but this time I wanted to explore the back roads.
There are quite a few roads that go ...nowhere. Its an adventure just finding your way.
Have fun....I spent the day at Fort Clinch.
Yes, gravel roads following the levee's and they go all directions. Had to backtrack to find my way but now it's gonna be straight road all away to Key West. Hope you had a good day in Fort Clinch. Too bad that they didn't rebuilt the boardwalk there.
Love trains. Next time I do that ride, Im definitely going to hit that gravel road. That was a trail Angel indeed. Safe travels my man.
That area has some nice gravel roads but construction is blocking some. Thank you ☺️
Happy to have discovered you channel.
I'm glad you found it :))
Great video, it’s looks beautiful there! Unfortunately, the weather here in IL is starting to turn very cold, so my outdoors riding days will be limited. But it will be nice being able to watch you on your adventures. Those gravel trails are fun and it keeps things interesting. Stay safe.
Thank you for watching my videos. Hope you get some nice sunny days to get outside 🤠
Park forest beautiful
Thanks for watching
Compared to my countryside, Miami has better weather and I envy.
Thank you 😊
New sub here, thank you so much for these great videos! They are a HUGE help to guys like me who are planning big bike adventures like yours. Longest ride I've done is 130 miles (in 8 hours). I plan on breaking that personal record this year!
The painted white bicycle at 4:15 is what is called a "ghost bike",sadly, meaning a cyclist was killed there by a motorist 😞
Did you do 130 within a day or over multiple days? Long rides are definitely fun. That's what I enjoy the most. Check out my other long rides too from playlist. I've biked all over Florida and beyond. Thank you for subbing, much appreciated 🙂👍
@@FollowThomasThanks for sharing. Do you have a ridewithgps link that shows this route?

👍👍
Thanks
Onto The Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail, Awesome.
This is my second time doing it but never used gravel roads to get to Key Largos. It was fun. Adventure continues. 👍
you have gps file of trip from Miami to Key Largo? Ive done bike packing from Key Largo to Key West, but would love to add some more to the trip. Thanks@@FollowThomas
@@MrDbost88 this is the full ride video with RWGPS links in the description ua-cam.com/video/FB6byjKcd30/v-deo.html
@@FollowThomas thank you Thomas! 🙌🏻👏🤩🚴
That is a beautiful canal trail. Is there no bike lane on the bridge? I think those white bikes represent a bicycle rider has gone down? Camping you are a brave man. Enjoyed the video..See you on the next adventure.
This bridge is older one, didn't have much shoulder but traffic was light. This was my first time going this way but it wasn't bad. Usually I go to Keys by Hwy1 with wide shoulder. I continue my ride towards Key West. Thanks 😊
Hi, Thomas. Would you mind telling us what kind of bike you ride & what accessories you use - helmet, tent, bike bags, etc.? Maybe a video? I love what you do. Thanks.
I'm hoping to make a video soon of my bikepacking stuff, stay tuned. Thanks for watching 🙂👍
Looks like a good trip! It's so pretty biking in the Keys but it's too bad they don't have bike lanes on some of the bridges. We've never done the Old Cutler Trail. We'll have to check that out. Steve wants to know how many miles per gallon you get! 🙂 We'd love if you would list the locations you mention in your video descriptions!
Overseas Heritage Trail is not completely yet but they keep adding bike trails to the bridges and hopefully one day it's complete done, so that you don't have to ride on a busy highway shoulder. How many gallons per mile, depends of time of year... I switched from soda to water, more efficient 😆
I'll try need to add names of places.
I sort of cringed when I saw you heading on the first gravel canal road since I knew it was blocked. I live in Cutler Bay and ride those roads often (today in fact). That one (Princeton Canal) is due to open March, 2024. The work at Mowry Canal is complete but there is still a barrier (which some people circumvent). That barrier is scheduled to be removed in April, 2023. There are big plans for that trail - including campsite for bike packers. Card Sound Rd needs at least another foot of width for bikers. Motorists are complete A-holes on that road.
Card Sound road needs a bike lane and that bridge was straight up but it's doable. Looking forward all of those improvements on the trail and campsite would be great. Meanwhile I would ride the "Blue Wall" instead to get to the keys, least you have a shoulder. This was my second time to ride to Key West. I'm sure I'm gonna be back again. 🙂
Wow, the sceneries look amazing on the roadsides ! Really a great adventure :) Have fun !
Thank you for watching 🙂
Great adventures always seem to pack in some synchronicity. I've ridden some trails that are so hard to get to and take hours of driving only to meet a couple of mountain bikers that me and my son know and have ridden with before. Then we are blessed with fellowship as well as being immersed in the wonder of nature. Nice gravel there, would take that all day compared to busy roads. Have a great weekend.
I enjoy gravel too but we have less and less gravel roads in Florida.
Cool ride. Any links for the trail you used?
This is the whole video with RWGPS route links in description. Thanks ua-cam.com/video/FB6byjKcd30/v-deo.html
Awesome ride Thomas! How many kmswill you cover in 3 days?
180 miles total. Last time I did it in 2 days but now I decided to slow down and take 3 days. Thanks for watching.
@@FollowThomas that’s 300km, 😑😬😀 that’s heaps!
Where are you from? I am from Austria. I willbedoing this in February. Anyway I canget a map from you detailing the trip. Thanks RPaul, Austria
I'm from Estonia but lived last 20 years in Florida. Thanks for watching :)
@@FollowThomas Question: Is there not a more coastal route from Miami/Key Biscayne to get to Key LArgo>? There must be, no?
@@rdelavarre Tere are only two bridges to get to Key Largo, by the Highway 1 "Blue wall", or Card Sound road. You have to choose one or another.
Hi again. What size tires did you use? Any flats? Thank you
I rarely get any flats but I'm always carrying couple of extra tubes just in case. I've 700x40 or 38 tires.
Is there no coastal route from, Miami to Largo? Or you must cycle inland?
@@rdelavarre This time I used Old Gutler Trail from Miami and gravel roads to get to Card Sounds Road to Key Largo. Last year I took Highway 1 (Blue Wall) from Homestead to Key Largo.
@@FollowThomas Sorry to bother you again. I am actually starting out in St. AUgustine and will follow A1A as the crow flies then into Miami. What is the best or quickest route from Miami to the highway to Key West? Perhaps we could meet up at some point. I will be writing a magazine article
@@rdelavarre Wow, that's a long way to Miami, takes about 4-5 days but I've done it from Jacksonville. As you get to near Miami I would turn from Jupiter to road 811 -> 809 -> 441 -> 869 ->997 and ride by the Everglades all away to Homestead and take Highway 1 to Key Largo. I would use Google Maps bicycle directions to see the exact route. Good luck! I'm in Jacksonville, shoot me an email if you wanna meet up some day thomasrohtsalu@gmail.com
Bike @4:09 is beyond "pretty cool" white bikes mark the spot where a cyclist died while riding. Sad reminder that most cars just dont see bikes
I didn't know at that time what the white bicycle 🚲 means but it's a sad reminder to be careful and that someone died there.
