I rode from Key West to Key Largo this past March with my daughter and her partner. We did it in two days stopping at the halfway point. Although there were segments where we had to ride on the shoulder, especially the 7-Mile Bridge, we didn't feel in danger. Since I ride a recumbent trike which is low to the ground I missed seeing the sharks and sea turtles they saw crossing the Bridge. My wife drove our suv which of course made carrying our luggage easy.
My Keys bucket list was a little simpler. Circumnavigate Key West on a bike. Riding on the shoulder, feet from RVs and trucks at highway speeds, I have now desire at this stage of the life game.
Very nice video. I rode from North Key Largo to Key West in 2021. Your comments about having to cross the highway to stay on the "trail" are spot on. I had rain the night before my ride and a lot of the trail was flooded and I eventually got fed up and just stuck to the shoulder of the road. I didn't have any issues with traffic and found that most gave me plenty of space. I highly recommend this trip for any cycling enthusiasts!
Loved this entire video! I myself am a Cuban American and hear so many stories from my mother and family coming in the middle of the night on the rough ocean. Also that’s a bucket list of mine too. One day I’ll do it but know it only needs to be done once lol
Wow! Great accomplishment. Friends of mine used to do the Ragnar Keys race from Miami to Key West but I had not seen how dangerous some of the sections were. Yikes.
I was planning to do this route this winter but after seeing how much you are just riding the shoulder of the road, I'm not too sure now. Thanks for the great video. Best one I've seen on it so far.
I was wondering why you were on the "fishing" side! Does not go all of the way across, as you well know ...now! :) Thanks for sharing it ...now I know for sure what it's like...no way! Thanks again.
The state and Monroe county should put some money into a plan to improve the cycling trail in the Keys. It it too dangerous IMO. It would bring more cycling to the area and thus more tourist dollars.
Thanks for sharing! Looked like a long line to get a photo at the southern marker. Why anyone would celebrate arriving there by motor vehicle is beyond me.
Impressive that you did this unassisted in a single day. Most impressive! But that base you passed was a Naval Air Station, not an Air Force base; and they were F-18s not 16s ;-) .
Hi! I’m planning on doing this and was curious as to how long the trip took in total and if you have an idea what was your average speed? And what bike did you use? Awesome video btw!
Great video. I am thinking about doing this in July 2022...how safe was it? I saw the bridge sections, but overall - looks pretty good. I am in Fort Myers at the moment and some of the cycling here is a bit scary - but most of it fine.
Honestly, there are some pretty sketchy stretches like the 7 Mile Bridge but I saw go for it if you're an experienced cyclist. I might wait until the winter though because it's going to be insanely hot in July.
Too bad that they cannot complete the old 7 mile bridge for cyclists and pedestrians, they did part of it and it cost almost $20 million to do, the cost of finishing is just too much for the benefits it will provide, unless they can make it car worthy in case of an emergency.

Yeah, in retrospect, I should've stuck more to the shoulder rather than trying to switch back and forth
Great content bro
We've been considering this ride but your video really gives me pause now! Great content here.
Thanks for the video and heads up. . I'm planning on going in couple of weeks. Hoping for a good ride.
Good luck!

Incredible ride (though yes, it needs a consistent path throughout)! Appreciate your channel, it's such a great look at South Florida.
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for posting! Doing out and back in May.
Stay safe!
Thanks for the informational video.
102 miles in a day is impressing! I sure can understand why this is a bucket list item for many 👍
Thank you!
Would love to do it if they ever create a decent trail from your start point all the way through. Nicely done SFL.
Thanks! Yeah, I wouldn't do it again without a better planned trail
That route was a part of the Smartride. Used to do it every year. Loved it. Definitely scary in places.
Thanks for taking us along!
Cool. I've rode this a couple of times but heading to Key West this weekend again to ride locally. 👍
nice ride AO , just found your channel. been watching your and reading of the great stuff you are doing for some time

Overseas highway trail is on my list of things to do. Great job.
Thanks!

Thank you! It's an incredible ride but definitely not something I want to do again

I do indeed!
Just booked a hotel for 12/24 -- pumped about biking KL - KW
Good luck and start early!
I did a ride in July from N. Ft. Myers Beach to Key West and took the Key West Express back. Pure hell
That must've been so hot
@@SFLNature I didn’t know the mosquitoes 🦟 could bite you through your clothes, but they can. 😂

Thanks and good to know!
What percentage of the trail was unpaved or gravel? Was there any places to get water along the way.
There was practically no gravel and plenty of stores along the route to fill up.
@@SFLNature right on thinking about going during kids spring break
Great video. Inspiring. Enjoy your channel. How long did the ride take?
Thank you! It took about eight hours.

It took about 8 hours and change in total, including stop, so about 12 mph on average. Closer to 16 mph moving speed. I have an old Cannondale.
