24hr Survival Challenge - Mangrove Coast - Catch and Cook EP.501

  • I walk into the bush over hills and around swamps for a 24 hour survival challenge along the mangrove coast where I forage and fish for my dinner. I catch and cook a number of good fish as well as identify some useful edible plants along the way. I camp by a freshwater river and hike down to the saltwater in the afternoon dodging poisonous snakes. Then I share a personal camp fire story. I am the wild cook.
This is my video food journal or video food diary of delicious freshly caught foods in the wild, by the sometimes semi naked chef! #fishing #wildcook #catchandcook

Andy when looking for water and you cant find any you can do the following:
Dig a hole in the ground, put lots and lots of greens in the hole, put a cup or container in the middle of the hole and make sure it wont fall over.
Take a plastic sheet and cover the hole, make sure it is as air tight as possible.
Then make a small hole in the plastic by the container or cup and put a small stone on top of the plastic where the hole is.
As the sun shine on the plastic there is condensation on the plastic, which should run down to your cup and drop into it. After a few hours you should have some drinking water.
You can also try lining the hole you dug with plastic and the fill it with saltwater, the rest is the same as above.
The water should evaporate and condensate against the plastic and fill your container.
I think this will give you more water per hour in the sun and the salt should stay in the saltwater.
I have not tried this method, but it should also work.
    Love your vids mate

Hey Andy. One thing I would have done is added a bit of water to the spice mix and mix it to make sort of a paste. Then rub that paste with your finger over the entire inside and if you want the outside of the fish. Just spreads the delicious spice mix a bit better.

doing a month long living off the land is a great aim. Not an expert myself but I have been talking it over in my mind. Being "fair" with fish will need to go out the window. Any you catch and can't eat need to be preserved. Eels could be trapped, I know you can make wicker baskets. Its the next step. Also a hand spear and mask in fresh water creeks opens up opportunities. great work very entertaining.

Andy, many thanks again for your excellent content. As a long time off-track bushwalker may I humbly suggest that you pack a pair of sturdy garden gloves for pushing through the thick stuff. Took me years of hiking to discover this little gem of wisdom - from an old (no longer published) publication of Bushwalking in South East QLD. There are so many unexpected thorns in the Australian tropical bush. I guarantee it will be a huge improvement to the ease of your journey.
And it might be overkill but a hiking friend has worn eye protection ever since he got a lawyer vine thorn in his cornea on a walk in the Blue Mountains. Nearly blinded him in his dominant eye.
Keep up the great work and all the best to you and yours!

Hey Andy! Much love from Tennessee, USA! Funny I love eating bass and bluegill put over coals! Now I'd like to make a suggestion! After you put that rub in the fish, stick some big oysters in there for that extra moisture. Take a couple of sticks and sort of stitch it closed. Hopefully you give that a try some time! Let me know what you think, brother. Take care.

When you'll have your jungle kitchen again, you should try what we call in France "la sauce au beurre blanc" ( in English : White butter sauce ). It is not that difficult and long to do ( 15 minutes ), the ingredients are easy to find and it's absolutely delicious with fish filet. It should be just amazing with Barramundi or snapper ( i often eat it with zander or European perch ). Thanks for the adventures, i love starting my week dinning in front of your videos x) !

Hey Andy! Great video, another thing for the fish is you could bring your preferred citrus to squeeze into the cavity so the spices aren't dry, or if there is some sort of wild edible you could stuff it with that would release juices into the spices then the fish? Keep up the awesome work!

I already knew what video you were talking about with the Cane toads before your campfire story session because I watched it a month or 2 ago and thought he was crazy! I think those survival videos would be cool! Maybe you could build almost like a bush shelter somewhere and keep coming back to it for a few days at a time to “simulate” being stuck out there for some time. Might make for more interesting videos because then you don’t have to focus on shelter, and other things and could focus on foraging and catching food.

    • @Andysfishing

You said you never have any luck not breaking the tip of those "pack" rods. I found that some cheap cigars will be sold in a plastic tube. This tube fits perfectly over the tip when it's all packed away, giving it some "armor" against bends or a good cracking against trees or rocks if dropped. Easily slips inside the carry case, and is likely less than an ounce in weight.
    Anyway, works for me :)
