She has a gorgeous voice, but she is also a top rate guitar player. She plucks instead of strumming the strings. She really optimizes the potential of her instrument. Some folks were just born to make music. I've always thought she is exceptional. It drove my mom crazy that I was such a big fan of JB, but the funniest thing happened one day. I came home from school, and my mom who is a pretty good singer, was wailing to "Diamonds And Rust" with JB on the stereo. Mom was outed as a huge fan.

She is emotional because she loved Bob Dylan even after they were no longer together she continued to sing songs he had written.Too bad he never felt as strongly about her. When i listen to her singing Diamonds&Rust or 500 miles......i get chills.

I saw her perform at the Hollywood Bowl, late 60's, early 70's. She told us that she was recovering from Laryngitis, so there were certain songs that she couldn't sing. We feared the performance was going to be a disaster. She performed brilliantly.....Just beautiful..... Here I am, 46 +/- years later, still remembering that concert....

The most beautiful folk voice! Wish I had been born with the gift of singing, even to have a tenth of this kind of voice - but alas I did not have the gift of singing. So I listen to it and collect it and attend concerts when I can.

    Go 'way from my window
Leave at your own chosen speed
I'm not the one you want, babe
I'm not the one you need
You say you're lookin' for someone
Who's never weak but always strong
To protect you an' defend you
Whether you are right or wrong
Someone to open each and every door
    But it ain't me, babe
No, no, no, it ain't me babe
It ain't me you're lookin' for, babe
Go lightly from the ledge, babe
    Go lightly on the ground
I'm not the one you want, babe
I will only let you down
You say you're lookin' for someone
Who will promise never to part
Someone to close his eyes for you
    Someone to close his heart
Someone who will die for you an' more
    But it ain't me, babe
No, no, no, it ain't me babe
It ain't me you're lookin' for, babe
Go melt back in the night
Everything inside is made of stone
    There's nothing in here moving
    An' anyway I'm not alone
You say you're looking for someone
Who'll pick you up each time you fall
    To gather flowers constantly
An' to come each time you call
A lover for your life an' nothing more
    But it ain't me, babe
No, no, no, it ain't me, babe
It ain't me you're lookin' for, babe

At 66 I have a visceral response to this song and the beauty of Joan and her singing... I named our son Gabriel, just as she named her son Gabriel. However, this is a song which looks into the existential abyss. It is a comment on the sexaul revolution and the emptyness it promoted then and to this very day. Very typical of all the music of that era... Still beautiful and mesmerizing.

Sing along, fellow lovers of this song:
    "Go 'way from my window
Leave at your own chosen speed
I'm not the one you want, babe
I'm not the one you need
You say you're lookin' for someone
Who's never weak but always strong
To protect you an' defend you
Whether you are right or wrong
Someone to open each and every door
    But it ain't me, babe
No, no, no, it ain't me, babe
It ain't me you're lookin' for, babe.
Go lightly from the ledge, babe
    Go lightly on the ground
I'm not the one you want, babe
I will only let you down
You say you're lookin' for someone
Who will promise never to part
Someone to close his eyes for you
    Someone to close his heart
Someone who will die for you an' more
    But it ain't me, babe
No, no, no, it ain't me babe
It ain't me you're lookin' for, babe.
Go melt back in the night
Everything inside is made of stone
    There's nothing in here moving
    An' anyway I'm not alone
You say you're looking for someone
Who'll pick you up each time you fall
    To gather flowers constantly
An' to come each time you call
A lover for your life an' nothing more
    But it ain't me, babe
No, no, no, it ain't me, babe
It ain't me you're lookin' for, babe."

What's tragic is that she was probably singing about Dylans thoughts on their relationship which was beginning to flounder. Some loves are blind, and then such as these, deaf!

This performance happened in the fall of 1965, right after Joan accompanied Dylan on his European tour and he did not invite her onstage to perform, the way she had invited him two years earlier. He had been secretly involved with Sarah Lownds the whole time he was with Joan. Joan only found out about Sarah on that trip.

@@lemorab1 Thats not true, by the time Dylan had fallen in love with Sarah, he and Baez had already grown apart, She chose to tag along for the 65 tour even though by then she was a thing of the past in Dylans life because he had moved on from the protest movement that Baez was so involved in.

So many of us can relate to the lyrics of this song. How many of us walked away from someone whom if we stayed would only have caused emotional harm and ruin their chances for a better partner who would love her/him as much as she/he loved us? Joan Baez (Dylan) IT was supposed to be a secret.

I loved it it ! I didn't know Bob Dylan wrote it. I heard it before with Johnny Cash & it's great too. But sounds very unique with Joan Baez. She is a real artist, unlike the "plastic" ones we have nowadays.
