...How can one ever describe this? The look in her eyes says it all, the song fits so perfectly in her voice and expression I get lost in it... An amazing woman and artist, thank you Joan for this work of art
@jimaroo100 She's always been on the side of truth, reason, justice and freedom. The things that puts her on the wrong side of aren't things humanity needs.
there are many unhappy married couples with an abusive husband, hell bent children who rebel their families by causing destruction and relationships are dysfunctional whether married or not, it's depending on the person and how one truly feels for the other.
ha, she may have just really messed up that little girls plans to get married at 0:27. anti marriage, who can blame her, spending all that time with bob. i was born in the 80's, and the first time i ever laid eyes on Joan.. there was just somthing about her that i loved.
Marvellous!!!! I love her voice control, and notice how she seems to hardly open her mouth and yet every word is crystal clear, present day singers take a lesson from this woman.
I think it's an absolutely incredible cover, by the way.. her eyes are so haunting. I find it more moving then Dylan's version, but I think maybe that's because when he sings it, it's almost scathing.
Go 'way from my window Leave at your own chosen speed I'm not the one you want, babe I'm not the one you need You say you're lookin' for someone Never weak but always strong To protect you an' defend you Whether you are right or wrong Someone to open each and every door But it ain't me, babe No, no, no, it ain't me, babe It ain't me you're lookin' for, babe Go lightly from the ledge, babe Go lightly on the ground I'm not the one you want, babe I will only let you down You say you're lookin' for someone Who will promise never to part Someone to close his eyes for you Someone to close his heart Someone who will die for you an' more But it ain't me, babe No, no, no, it ain't me, babe It ain't me you're lookin' for, babe Go melt back into the night, babe Everything inside is made of stone There's nothing in here moving An' anyway I'm not alone You say you're looking for someone Who'll pick you up each time you fall To gather flowers constantly An' to come each time you call A lover for your life an' nothing more But it ain't me, babe No, no, no, it ain't me, babe It ain't me you're lookin' for, babe
in 1969 i had in my hand a 45 rpm vinyl record with covers songs of " Eloise, boom bang bang, eleonore, and where do you go to my lovely, 4 songs squeezed in a 45rpm, does any one out there remember this record? I am talking 1969. more than, or better yet almost 50 years ago,if some one has it I will buy it from you, or if some one can tell me ,.where I can get this record I trully appreciate it, is for nostalgic reason
Amazing lady and individual who fought with a political purpose for a better humanity in America, I'm blessed to have the original vinyl of Baez sings Dylan, I'd of ran away with her beautiful woman
She is a powerful and beautiful singer. The lyrics and music are inspired. But looking back at the meaning after all these years I can see what a sad song this is. A tale of someone who will not give themselves totally to a lover but who always holds back. If I had lived out the philosophy of the song these last 45 years, I would have had a terrible life. This is brilliant art but I am happy I took a different path than the one described here.
@gregorymwishart i under stand and i agree with you completely, there is still music like this out there. it's just that it isn't as out in the open as it used to be, it's underground now and it just makes me wonder why music as beautiful as this isn't as celebrated as it was in the past.
She's covering a Dylan song... They broke up in '65 and he went on to marry Sara Lownds a little later on that same year (funnily enough the year this was recorded).. I get the feeling the "anti-marriage" stance is little more than a dig at Dylan, and who could blame her? I bet that hurt.. Could be wrong, but seeing as Joan married David Harris in 1968, I doubt she was truthfully campaigning against something she would later herself go on to do.
@TheEpicMusicChannel i think maybe she was being a little playful with the protest song comment. but it's a protest song in the sense that it's pushing away the idea of a conventional marriage.. i guess there was just no particular movement to attach it to. i love dylans songs so much more when joan sings them lol.
As a Reaganite I've never agreed with her politically but I have to admit there is something about her voice and appearance that is transfixing. She is an American treasure and icon of the sixties. I find her rendition of this song to be so sincere it scary.
@gstromquist exactly :) i'm in high school and i've become so aware of how technology has affected my generation's tast in music. i feel like if something isn't instantly a gigantic production, they become impatient and don't bother to take the time to let the message of a song soak in or appreciate or realize that actual people are creating art with sound.
What a lovely cover. Arrangement-wise, this is quite a lot like the version Dylan played live himself in the 1990s (which I've never managed to find a recording of) - though her mellifluous voice obviously transforms it. I think I like this quite a lot better than Dylan's original album recording.
@jimaroo100 I disagree. I think the song is about not comprising yourself and your own values for the sake of love. I also think the person she's singing to has an idyllic, fairy tale, substance-less view of love (ie: only a romance) and not a realistic interpretation of what a relationship is or should be. I love my husband to an incredible fault but I will NEVER defend him or protect him even when he is wrong and I don't expect him to be at my beckon call like a little love sick puppy either.
@MrPsychoSquid The de-politicization of the West [on average]; Corporate penetration ie: music as an industry and less an art = producing to meet bottom lines and not the stimulation of righteous minds, which has also contributed to the bifurcation of singers from actually being the writers of the songs they sing etc.. however, and even though I do agree with you [somewhat], generations since [incl. mine] have managed to produce some amazing talents/art [espec when considered on a glbl scale]
@jimaroo100 i think more than holding back...its about someone who can stand fully on their own, a soul on a journey, more about dependency and independency, about letting the other person know, that you might not be there forever, for nothing is set in stone, and also, that you're not there to solve all their troubles, its nice to share battles sometimes, but if you share them all, you only create a crutch, ending up never standing fully on you own.
Baez sings Dylan just about better than anyone else, but still can't compare to the man himself. The problem is that even though Dylan's voice isn't great, nobody else can sing his songs with the same vocal inflexions and rhythms. As a result the song's cadence is lost and the result is always a much 'flatter' uninteresting performance. For one of the worst (or best?) examples of this try listening to Johnny Cash singing 'It ain't me babe' with his wife.
@jimaroo100 We maintained a form of human society where marriage didn't exist for most of our history, yet somehow we evolved and survived. I know many happy couples who haven't chosen to have an official seal of approval on their relationship with lovely happy kids and contentment far beyond those I see on a civil contract who are very miserable indeed. It's LOVE that holds the family unit together, not some government licencing scheme or any financial arrangement. If it suits ya, great.
@bolloxinator She says " I guess I am anti marriage"... she is entitled to her opinion. But a society without stable marriage will disintegrate quickly... and that is a very bad thing. By the way... marriage protects women and children. it provides them rights and protections of law. Without marriage woman and children will suffer.
I GOT VERY DISAPPOINTED WITH THE NEW CRAP BEING PLAYED ON THE RADIO THESE DAYS AND THOUGHT I WOULD LISTEN TO SOME OF THE OLDER ARTISTS AND MUSIC FROM THE 60' AND 70's, IS IT JUST ME OR DID THE ARTISTS IN THOSE DAYS PUT MORE FEELING AND HEART INTO THERE MUSIC...... JOAN BAEZ, BOB DYLAN, JOHN DENVER AND SO MANY OTHERS..... PEACE
its still there people but we just have to scrap below the surface of commercial scum that effects all our lives remember we are all fucked if they want us to be. Keep hope in your hearts respect and love x
@respectac No, it would be infinitely better, because the writers would be forced to write better music, and the singers would have to be better [without technical enhancement to help them). Win/win.
Prefer it to Dylan's. From a era of beautiful folk and protest music that combined with the civil rights movement in the USA. I remember those songs and struggles as if it was yesterday.
Still a wonderfully talented singer today... too bad she has hooked her talent to political causes .....and has the distinction of being on the wrong side of every issue since 1964.
I have to admit, not being a big fan of hers, that she captures the dispassionate, unapologetic tone of sentiment this lyric should present but, so often, doesn't.
I think you're both wrong, I think it's about loving someone so much that you wouldn't want to tie him/her to you forever. It's about letting your partner have freedom if they wish for it. You're obviously married, so it's natural for you to miss the point :P
If you think no beautiful, amazing music is being written today, as is a common sentiment on 60's music videos on youtube, check out 'in it' by Don Brownrigg! More people who love this kind of music need to hear it. And this isn't spam, there's no personal gain- I just want to share it.
You see, my friend, the irony is.....I gave all of myself.... but I didn't lose, I gained myself . he who loses himself will find himself...he who dies to himself will live... I made a decision to give my wife all of me..... and she did the same...and the exquisite beauty is that I found myself in her.... oh well I am not poet enough to describe it. But it has been a beautiful life.
are you kidding? first of all, this song is about suze rotolo. second, whatever their personal history, dylan owes more to baez (at least commercially) than she owes to him.
No one emotes like Joan. And hearing her sing this, seeing her eyes, we all know who she’s thinking about. Damn, Bob. You broke her heart.
I don't think I've ever loved a musicians voice as much as hers
This song and this live version specifically makes me weep everytime I hear it. Joan is such a beautiful singer, transcendental
What an angel, just love her! and such a delicate, beautifull voice!
The greatest female voice of all time, imho, none can touch her.
I love this women and all she stands for
...How can one ever describe this? The look in her eyes says it all, the song fits so perfectly in her voice and expression I get lost in it... An amazing woman and artist, thank you Joan for this work of art
She’s a real one.
@MrPsychoSquid We're all still listening to it. :-)
Beauty and talent.
she was as talented as anyone I ever saw any comments?
Dedicated to all the women whom ever have been stalked.
Essential....
1:36-2:00 my favorite part
A Dylan song, but I love it way more with her. Funny that i'ts probably written about Joan.
I disagree with all of you.
I think its a fucking amazing song.
I want her.
@jimaroo100 She's always been on the side of truth, reason, justice and freedom. The things that puts her on the wrong side of aren't things humanity needs.
@Skatevidcentral i know they are, my whole veiw of the world has changed since i made that comment :]
there are many unhappy married couples with an abusive husband, hell bent children who rebel their families by causing destruction and relationships are dysfunctional whether married or not, it's depending on the person and how one truly feels for the other.
ha, she may have just really messed up that little girls plans to get married at 0:27.
anti marriage, who can blame her, spending all that time with bob.
i was born in the 80's, and the first time i ever laid eyes on Joan.. there was just somthing about her that i loved.
Now why they destroyed Dylan's BBC tape, I will never understand.
Did they ?
she's so incredibly inspiring why do we have such shitty role models today
Written by Bob Dylan - and wrecked by the high warbling Baez. Not one of his greatest pennings but good nonetheless.
don't be mean
Ridiculous
I think Johnny Cash wrote it, I maybe wrong. Surely you are wrong about Baez though..
arijeetanubis ofDunedain bob wrote it covered by cash actually.
you are wrong old son
what on earth happened to music like this?
Marvellous!!!! I love her voice control, and notice how she seems to hardly open her mouth and yet every word is crystal clear, present day singers take a lesson from this woman.
I think it's an absolutely incredible cover, by the way.. her eyes are so haunting. I find it more moving then Dylan's version, but I think maybe that's because when he sings it, it's almost scathing.
Dylan and many others always said what a good guitarist she was, and it's true, absolutely brilliant.
Go 'way from my window
Leave at your own chosen speed
I'm not the one you want, babe
I'm not the one you need
You say you're lookin' for someone
Never weak but always strong
To protect you an' defend you
Whether you are right or wrong
Someone to open each and every door
But it ain't me, babe
No, no, no, it ain't me, babe
It ain't me you're lookin' for, babe
Go lightly from the ledge, babe
Go lightly on the ground
I'm not the one you want, babe
I will only let you down
You say you're lookin' for someone
Who will promise never to part
Someone to close his eyes for you
Someone to close his heart
Someone who will die for you an' more
But it ain't me, babe
No, no, no, it ain't me, babe
It ain't me you're lookin' for, babe
Go melt back into the night, babe
Everything inside is made of stone
There's nothing in here moving
An' anyway I'm not alone
You say you're looking for someone
Who'll pick you up each time you fall
To gather flowers constantly
An' to come each time you call
A lover for your life an' nothing more
But it ain't me, babe
No, no, no, it ain't me, babe
It ain't me you're lookin' for, babe
No words can describe the wonder and greatness of you joan baez
in 1969 i had in my hand a 45 rpm vinyl record with covers songs of " Eloise, boom bang bang, eleonore, and where do you go to my lovely, 4 songs squeezed in a 45rpm, does any one out there remember this record? I am talking 1969. more than, or better yet almost 50 years ago,if some one has it I will buy it from you, or if some one can tell me ,.where I can get this record I trully appreciate it, is for nostalgic reason
Amazing lady and individual who fought with a political purpose for a better humanity in America, I'm blessed to have the original vinyl of Baez sings Dylan, I'd of ran away with her beautiful woman
That voice.. Those eyes.. impossible to ignore!
gotta love joan baez' sarcasm: "this is a protest song ... " ..funny stuff
It wasn't sarcasm, the "babe" in the song is the American flag...
I fucking love this girl.. Crying, yo. I love you too, Joan Baez.
Man Joan baez was a hottie
you are an idiot
Purely genuine singer. Hand me a tissue.
I wonder if she is still against marriage or not. Because true wisdom comes with the age.
I support marriage 100%! So sad that so many do not understand what real love is.
I know that this is a cover but my God her voice it is so beautiful. What a talented women.
What a jewel of a performance- superb talent and an exquisite delivery!
"The Sweet Music Of Our Lives"
The marriage stuff is pure irony. She's singing a song that Dylan obviously wrote too and about her. Ouch.
A voice that still chills me with a great song.
@gregorymwishart i under stand and i agree with you completely, there is still music like this out there. it's just that it isn't as out in the open as it used to be, it's underground now and it just makes me wonder why music as beautiful as this isn't as celebrated as it was in the past.

In love with her voice, with her flawless beauty and with her deep eyes.

beautiful voice and she is so detached from song yet so into it....kind of send sends a chill at the same time ...lovely presentation.
I love my dog.
Dylan to write this song and Joan Baez to sing it was a musical match made in heaven.
Timeless.
@vanvlishter i think you need a hug. that's how i feel since i broke up. can't stop listening to this song since.

Best cover of this song

her voice and lyrics speaks volumes. message ends.
Joan looked like the identical twin of my mother, both in young and older age :)
She was goddess
Being young, I discovered this via repeats at the start of the 1990s and it's something I still find myself singing today.
so beautiful, it actually took me aback a little
Three things considered marriage, see Jewish 101,(surprise!)
@Andesite1 you cant put an amount of any currency on that, its priceless
i can't get over the beauty of this song sang in this voice.
Maravillosas canciones que nos llevan a ootros tiempos llenos de ilusiones y esperanzas
angelic voice
She's so good
Those words and that voice - wow!
It is sweet and so sober...
Joan rules!
she's incredible. A true original and beauty
is she the girl from the noreth country i love her anyway
damn this version is jus too good........been many yrs n still lisning this ......thnx youtube :D
What a beautiful woman.
But it ain't me, babe.
She's breaking my heart
that's so fucking sad :( knowing that now...
Song reminds me of Jim Croce's "Lovers Cross"
I think you're both wrong, I think it's about loving someone so much that you wouldn't want to tie him/her to you forever. It's about letting your partner have freedom if they wish for it. You're obviously married, so it's natural for you to miss the point :P

La voz femenina más hermosa del mundo!

A voice that simply defies description.
