  • Valley jack rafters travel from the ridge board to the valley rafter, they will get smaller each time by an equal amount this is called the diminish.
    I cut all the 4 sets of valley jack rafters for the roof in one go, there are 4 sets of 7 rafters and these are all matching so there is only seven seperate different lengths
    I hope you find this useful.

    The quality and skill you put into your work never cease to amaze me. And you make it look so easy: that the hallmark of a true professional!

    Nothing looks greater than seeing good roof construction and how they all connect in modern or in historic buildings. Perhaps it is just a Joiner/Carpenter thing?

    Things you don't really need to know because you'll probably never do this job, but you watch and learn anyway because... 👍

    The first 1min 29 secs was at your normal speed, then you slowed down to our speed for the rest of the video! Excellent and informative as usual sir, a joy to watch!

    Love the videos and your accuracy is certainly machine like - but could you not have had a machine cut it all out? I am increasing interested in the collaboration between the designer, the robot and the master builder like your self.

    I have the same Milwaukee cordless worm drive type saw, I purchased both left and right rip guides for it, and they've each benefited in use.

    I can see that an apprenticeship is pretty crucial to really master this stuff!

    Funny, I wondered from last video if scarfs should have a strap for sideways support (Hurricanes etc.) but then in this video I see where all the jack's go in and that it's rock solid. Well impressed by it all. I can see now why it's the tin roof you worry about not the one you are building. Be better to do some work I the safe rooms below if the wind is riping through - I guess you just can't resist getting on with it though. Great to see the lads fitting the jack's, and amazed at your 5 mins per jack cutting. Many thanks.

    I didn't think a roof could be this amazing. I'm a doctor and not even a joiner!

    Do you nail up with 4" wire nails?
    Very neat work but I wouldn't rate screws and pasloade nail as suitable fixings here.

    • @ukconstruction
      @ukconstruction  2 роки тому +1

      We use a structural screw to perfectly position then we use a 3.1mm heavy duty galvanised nail from Paslode and these are perfect for this application, there are some cheap nails that may not stand the test of time but the quality of the paslode nail and the Spax screw. Maybe I will do a video on this at some point??

    Nice job Robin.
    Keeping the rafters up on the valley is going to work out well for the lay boards.

    Nicely done Robin. Reminds me of my late Dad laying a roof out and cutting it on the ground before pitching it. He always maintained it was quicker than the preformed truss erectors and frequently proved it, on complex jobs. Keep up the great educational work. 👏

    Why are the rafters not flush, I see it's deliberate using a spacer.

    • @RobNorman08
      @RobNorman08 2 роки тому

      They are the valley jacks, basically to stay on plane, the edge of the valley jack rafter should strike the centre line of the valley rafter, for that to happen they need to be set above the edge of the valley rafter.

      @@RobNorman08 Another way to do it is to raise the seat cut on the valley the same dimension as the the drop on the hip.
