- In this episode of The Big Build we have some work on the Stud wall that will provide great support to the roof Valley Rafters that we have fitted.
I am busy teaching Ed all the tricks of the trade and also how to make a decent job of a stud wall

Always great to watch a real craftsman at work.
It was good seeing you give Ed instructions and explanation as part of his learning curve.
Seeing you throw a leg over to clamp the wood in place while you cut the noggin reminded me of The Perkins builder brothers saying that their Dad would do the same and say ‘throw a leg and saddle that baby in place’
Love that!!!
Magic as always mate
Absolute class. Robin you just dance around your craft with so much flair. Never get bored of this stuff, great work lads
Brilliant work
Thank you Harry
Wow, really dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s. I’d love to know what the customer thinks watching all this. That roof is so geometrically sound, you could calibrate spirit levels from it!
My customer is so lovely!! they really look after us in every way, super lucky to be their builders!!!
"Calibrate spirit levels"? Nah - you level them and put them in the freezer, then youre set for the day! 😂😂😂😂
Wonderful work 👍👍👍
Did you nail through the spacer in the last noggin then by the magic of edit😂.Nice work mate you are a treat to watch and have prob forgot more than some know👏🏻
It’s a good move sticking to the same tape measure when transferring measurements. I mixed mine up once and cut an extra mm or two off. Really had me doubting myself until I compared the two measures.
Be honest….did you nail through into the spacer at 30:58? It certainly looked like it…
Haha yes I agree. especially liked how it skipped onto pulling it out as a snug fit after haha.
Love the half joint. Best detail yet. In previous episodes I shuddered every time you passed those little blocks thinking surely he's not going to leave those there. I should know better. Great job mate.
7:19 this needs to be perfect lets clime up and fix it, Robin gets a 5" step ladder and Ed then shoots nails off the ground like a Bo....... lol cool video guys cheers 👌👍🤣
Fantastic ... this is a fresh vid and like seeing the details and the nature in the speed of true work. Cheers Robin and your team. This is great
Always time for tea, another fantastic video thanks
some kiddy robin
Job I'm on at the moment we get 2 Apaches, and 2 Chinooks daily
Don’t suppose you nailed that bit of OSB at the end by any chance 😉 love watching you guys work!!!!
Those last bits to make everything nice and tight and bring it all together, rewarding stuff.
Loved this series! From the beginning to the end it was full of wonderful insight and knowledge. Appreciated Robin.
Made me laugh just before you nailed into the valley, Ed definitely didn’t need that step ladder 😁
He is a Unit!!!
@@ukconstruction your knees will thank you 👍🏻
Wonderful work and passing on the skills .👍👍
Nice touch with the noggins and studs shrinking. Robbin if there was a carpentry Olympics you’d have more gold medals than Michael Phelps
Class act Robin. 👍👍
Robin true class mate I’ve never seen such perfection. It’s a shame you have to cover all that with plaster board.
I drove past you a few weeks back I was waving like a nutta. Felt like a right knob you didn’t even see me😂
So sorry not to have seen you mate!!! Thanks for your kind words mate!!! Next time stop me!!! I will buy you a coffee!!!
Have you got a coffee maker and microwave hanging off those belts to… Enjoy the watching by the way. Quality work.
"we're being invaded by helicopters" ....I was wating for you to break out into Wagner's, Ride' of The Valkyries :).
Great video, learned lots of tips in that. Hadn't thought of shrinkage being different in the two directions on those finger noggins. Wonder if you ever cut a piece of wood not quite to the right length. I'd have been adjusting that bridal stud all afternoon to make it fit LOL.
Nicely Done Mate
Great to watch a true craftsman at work! Inspiring and awesome as always Robin! Was it a helicopter or a prop plane? 😆
A helicopter.. we had the pleasure most weeks of a chinook flying low overhead, and one day as we waved furiously they opened the rear hatch like a hello!! Proper good guys up there!
@@ukconstruction amazing! So cool to see. Was rowing on Windermere one time when a fighter jet did a super low flyover. The sound was incredible!
Fair play that timber fitted like a glove supporting the valley first time (as expected for you) whenever I seen to measure a stud, I measure it, cut it to that measurement then it’s either too big or too small 🙈🤣 but swear I’m only reading what the tape tells me
SICK!!
Its going to be a shame to cover up all that lovely timber. Quality job as always Rob
What is the extra long hammer for? Excellent job as usual. Power nailer is a piece of kit. So easy to be a couple of mm out and be too tight a fit. Practice makes square cuts look easy. How many would not have fitted the noggins. Lucky you know your trade to get decent lumber to work with.
The extra long hammer is a framing hammer, (building timber frame walls etc). The length allows more leverage, the head is heavier to allow more inertia when driving in nails and the claw is straighter, making it easier to pull out nails.
@@gbwildlifeuk8269 I will look out for one, I just thought it might be as Robin is so wee! I have never treated myself to an Estwing or other decent hammer as in kitchen/bathroom fitting I usually screw everything with the cordless tools. He is a very clever man Robin I enjoy his content. Many thanks I will do a search for a new hammer.
@@keithburton7516 i dont think you'll need one for bathroom/kitchen fitting but if you want one they're around £40/50. With Robins' size yes, his standard hammer is usually a stubby claw 🤣🤣
👋 nice one 👏🇮🇪☘️🤟
Lucky apprentice there!
Could you do a van tour?
Surely you don't need to transfer the weight of roof through load bearing stud wall ,or is roof fully loaded with tiles or was it specified by engineer.love all the videos tusk tenon was always my favourite joint in college also.👍👍
30:58 sticky spacer? ;)
Hi Robin, great work so far! What type of combination Diamond Back belt are you wearing please?
Great details again Sir. Will there be horizontal "frame" behind the OSB boards on the walls, or you would leave it like that in order to make way for a continous insulation? I haven't seen any horizontal "block" even where the OSB sheats meet. I am really qurious about that.
Hi Robin excellent looking work as always, but how did you get the position for that birdsmouth on the valley rafter as I thought you had already cut this over the ashlar wall earlier in the series ?
Robin, what dewalt table saw are you using? Great work as usual 👍
Robin, love your Chanel.. time served joiner myself.. one question, as I’ve added some of your toys to my tool box.. what tool belt/ braces do you wear?
I wear the Diamondback vest and belt system, it's super strong, lightweight, customisable and the best pouch set up I have had!!
As a complete ‘cabbage’ is this level of workmanship taught to apprentices, or is it purely down to the main joiner?
Did you just say "sick"?
I'm cool!!
Is there a ‘pecking order’ among apprentices eg is Ed Chief Apprentice and so forth, or is he Robins purely?
Hi Robin , wat type DeWalt table Saw do you Use . And do you like IT ? I AM planning to buy one but i dont now if i take the dwe7485 or the dwe7492.
Do you allow anyone other than Ed to use your power tools eg table saw, crosscut saw etc?
Hi Robin, What make is your tool belt please ?
Hi Will its a Diamondback, really great bit of kit too
Owner better have a fixed price contract. Think Robin is building a piano rather than some rough framing.
Thats the trouble it never used to be rough, that's just modern standards, I could not do rough!!! Who admits to rough work anyway!!
@@ukconstruction I couldn't agree more. Why make it rough when you can make it clean and precise. 👏👏👏. Your videos are awesome! Thank you.
@@jacobecorder nice one Jacob, you know the score!!
@@ukconstruction we will see. I'm doing a 2nd story addition once the permit is approved. I could have gone the easy route. But no.
30x30' cape cod style house. Cutting 2nd story off. Adding Nantucket dormers to the front and back. Why have no valleys when you can have 8?😂😂😂. Oh and a front porch of course that is 30 x12'. This summer is going to be a blast!!!!!
The side of the house will still look like a one and a half story with a 12:12 pitch roof that peaks above the Nantucket dormers.
Not bad for a first big build I guess. Wish I could hire someone, but the lumber and insulation prices are killing me.
@@ukconstruction when you got your chisel out, I knew I was watching the correct guy.
Like to know what it cost
It's woodworking porn 😆
