  • I recently had a client mention that when he found the proper resting tongue position, he felt his hip flexors relax. There is a potential explanation for this. It turns out that the tongue, neck muscles, mediastinum, heart, diaphragm, and hip flexors are all connected in the Deep Front Line.
    This is precisely why working on just one area of the body to resolve pain is pointless. Tension anywhere along this line could cause pain elsewhere.

    This may sound like nonsense to people that don’t have these issues, but this makes so much sense to those of us living with these wack compensations.
    The entire right side of my body has been getting more and more tense over the past year and I had no idea why.
    I have done a few of your exercises for breathing and the results were so much faster than I could have imagined.
    I can get out of bed now without feeling like my gut might explode on the right side, because of all the pressure from my right side being crunched together and overactive.

    I've been looking and learning this concept for over 40 years. My entire left side was shut down from a very young age. You have no idea how much work i've put towards healing. I ve made lots of progress but it's been an incredible amount of pain and struggle. Over 40 years of chronic pain. Your knowledge is supremely important. Thank you.

    Tongue position slight behind the upper front teeth is essential in qi gong practice, especially in zhan zhuang and microcosmic orbit meditations. This knowledge is apparently thousands of years old and what amazes me is that the ancients figured this out purely by lives dedicated to practice and biofeedback. No cadaver dissections, no modern anything, just pure cultivated self awareness.

      Only the tip of the tongue slightely behind the front teeth or has the whole tongue to be pressed upward Like in the word "thing"?

      @@juleo6873 just the tip, lightly touching.. although body builders would recommend a very strong 'th' upward press whilst weight lifting.. the daoists were more focussed on the relaxing and a kind of electric circuit connecting.. there is another option for relaxing which is the tip of the tongue touching just below the lower front teeth where they meet the gum.. this was specifically for a kind of relaxing feeling rather than energetic, i picked that up from a bagua-zhang teacher, it's an interesting alternative. Buddhists and Kundalini and ninjitsu people say the same thing about the importance of the roof of the mouth thing.

      @@kacakci5870 well it will stop you biting your tongue if you get smacked but it seems more for focus IMO.. but I read that it is dangerous to meditate without the tongue tip/ roof mouth thing.. i really don't know, I just do it because I was told to.

      @@noklarokthe tongue behind the front teeth connect the Du Mai with the Ren Mai channels. Basically the two channels where the microcosmic orbit takes place. Physiciologically and energetically it connects the electrical impulses from the fascial front line and the back line so that both “currents” are in balance. If in meditation or qigong or Kundalini flow there comes a huge electrical flow it can damage the balance of the meridian/energeticall system, thats why you put the tongue there , like a bridge ❤
      There is a famous Kundalini teacher whose famous saying was “…and remember: keep your tongue up!”

    Goodness me. This is why my Buddhist chanting practice, a mantra full of T sounds and L's, has had such an amazing effect on my body. Core strength, flexibility, symmetry and stability. Amazing.

    1000% my issues the past 7 years hav been linked to tongue placement. My tongue feels normal oriented to the right. Focusing on centering it in the middle feels totally out of position but allows everything to relax all the way down to my left foot that always collapses but doesn’t with proper tongue placement. I also always complain during exercise that it feels like I can only breathe out of right side of my diaphragm. This video might b life changing. Not even exaggerating

      Wow same here! I naturally rest my tongue on the right side of the mouth. This causes my body weight to shift to the right. When I walk with my tongue in the center I feel my body is balanced, if I shift it to the left my body weight shift to the left. It's incredible how the tongue has the power to affect all the body. I'm having a lot of troubles with my body alignment and I believe the tongue is the cause. I don't know why I've always placed my tongue there.

    I am in awe of how PRI works! Thank you for sharing this invaluable info. More doctors NEED to know about this. I think too many would be afraid this info would put them(and pharmaceuticals) out of business thus wouldn't consider its tremendous value.

      @@user3657 im having having dental work done which interferes with the program so I have to go back in a few weeks. When I was there we figured out my neck and teeth are a huge driver of my pattern. I'm looking forward on going back.

      @@carrd1 ah that's cool! I know I am really sensory driven! I have prisms and already know when I am in specific shoes it's game over. My vision is a big part of this, when I am in my house it's game over but when I am out in the open my neck has tons more mobility, same thing driving.. if there are tons of trees next to the road I can sense things getting tight but in the open it releases. I think my dental is a big part of this too. How did that work for you? Did they contact your dentist for you or just left you on your own? How are they dealing with the cost for you since you need to return?

    Best way to relax the tongue is bringing head down. Like your chin to your neck. Not super hard. Jus enough to change that posture of the head, in turn, stretching the back of your neck. I did it to stretch that area and it fixed EVERY problem I had. Neck pain back pain, voice, tense tongue, better breathing. Everything. Gone. I can't even recognize all but I just feel good. Holding that position all day starts as tiring and uncomfortable but the next day your great. Key is to keep the practice.

    Thank you for posting new informational videos! This explains why when I would do facial yoga exercises, I’d feel my left facial muscles working. When I’d go to workout, my right hip was able to open up. It’s hard to explain but I remember the feeling. Going to look for tongue posture exercises!

    Hey I just wanted to tell you thank you for this video I just watched it watch one of your other videos recently I subscribed because of this video thank you for posting it I really needed to hear this video today I don't know which is more disconcerning or satisfying finally hearing should be common ground that which seems to be quite invisible or missing in American culture anyway which is all I know had self-diagnose a very serious so as injury from a car accident took me 18 years to even figure out or know what the soaz but I seem to be being very successful three years into trying to climb myself out of realizing 18 years after the accident that it is a soaz injury as it is painfully healing is one of the very obvious knowledge's that are becoming apparent to me how the soul has can't be parted and really neither can the body make sense to me but trying to find the logistics in the science has been difficult this so as injury has made it very clear up to today in which my brain is trying to figure out why the tongue is what shows the most animation of the stress that I'm going through thank you for this video it really helped me today

    I've watched only a watched 4 of your videos, this is absolutely extraordinary 😮, so much makes sense, I need to watch more because my head hasn't gotten around you videos and my left side issues. I'm right side dominant, including eyes, hand, feet, however my tongue feels in spasm to my left, as does my molar clench. I'm confused a bit, but I can completely relate to these concepts. From my left eustachian canal, left tongue pressure, and everything else on my left side causing me issues, but I'm right side dominant?, which foot is causing the "foundation imbalance" ?.

    In 2022 my partner and I took a trip to Mexico. We decided to take our small dog with us instead of paying several hundred dollars for dog boarding. It only cost 200.00 for her round trip. We all got dental care done. 35.00 for or human teeth cleaning. Only 50.00 for a doggie teeth cleaning with pre-testing and and anesthesia. Essentially her plane ticket dog food and vet care only cost 270.00$ for all that. That's cheaper than just the cleaning in the USA. We saved a lot bringing our dog and getting her care in Mexico. What a crazy thing that is.

    So what do we do if we don't have enough room in our mouth for our tongue? My teeth are aligned. Do I need to have them moved forward to create more room?

    I first started learning about PRI months ago when I had extreme body anxiety and realized that I couldn’t relax my left leg. I tried everything but nothing worked. Then, I thought about the permanent metal wire retainer in my bottom teeth that I’ve had for years. I decided to get it removed to see what would happen. I literally felt my left facial muscles reactivate. I felt my jaw shift. And I was able to get onto both of my legs truly. My anxiety was almost completely gone, I have the ability to turn off body pain. I also have the ability to sometimes see things far away almost perfectly without glasses even though I have -2, -2 myopia. I also have the ability to occasional get my brain to turn on my left eye and left ear so that I can see and hear in “3D” if that makes sense. However, I am now suddenly struggling greatly with concentration, morning nausea, and turning off my focus of my body. My jaw and face shifted when I got the metal wire out of my teeth. Now my teeth are slanted, so when I try to close my “left tongue” and left jaw muscle, my left bottom teeth grind up and back with extreme force and my tongue can’t get all the way rested without damaging force coming down on my left canine/ front bottom teeth. It is very frustrating trying to explain this to people, as well as trying to solve this issue ( I’m trying to find an orthodontist who understands what I’m talking about ). To them my teeth look straight and when I move my jaw they think I’m tensing it when actually I’m relaxing it and the teeth themselves are slanted and not fitting right. I did some research to learn that the tongue retraction neurons are connected directly to our jaw closing neurons so that we don’t accidentally bite our tongue while chewing. This may be part of the problem besides fascial connection. Unfortunately this also means I can’t rest my tongue without closing my left jaw which can’t close because teeth are in the way. I always try to make sure that any other fascial interference is not messing up my calculation of where the jaw is trying to close when I feel the emotion of “true calm” . I close my eyes and cover them, etc. But I always see the same pattern. I honestly don’t know if PRI exercises can fix people with a dental problem ( that I didn’t even know I had ) like myself. But PRI should absolutely be used During any dental procedures! So they don’t accidentally mess up the position of the teeth. Now, I must find a way somehow to fix my teeth after years of orthodontic malplacement. Please let me know if you have any ideas or people or methodologies that can help me to restore my teeth to a better position. Perhaps orthodontists need to over- or - under- correct so that when the appliance is removed the jaw moves into the proper alignment ? I honestly have no idea why my orthodontic treatment turned out the way it did, whether it was my orthodontists fault, or whether braces / retainers do this to everyone ?? Which would explain a lot if so...

      I think braces are sometimes put on "patterned" craniums that the lock the cranium further into the pattern (pretty sure this happened to me when I was young). It's called the Right TMCC pattern (PRI term), Left Side Bend, or Right Torsion (the last two being osteopathic terms). Putting braces on a patterned cranium can have bad outcomes.

      @@NealHallinan Hi Neal, is it the same thing with dental crown? I have one on my right side of teeth, which is my patterned side. And ever since that dental crown my face I less and less symmetrical and I believe it also causes some of my underlying issue. Thinking about removing it.

    So I went to my PT who is good with PRI here in upstate new York first the teeth were the problem and now found out that my tongue is too short and it might need a surgery to give it more space. I hope that my problem will be solved because of the pain it's causing and the time I'm losing not being able to enjoy anything in life

    I have a scar on right abdomen starting at my lower ribs, pyloric stenisis surgery at 3 weeks old. Iv had problems all my life, breathing, and spinal instability.
    My ribs are lifted and have a difficult time doing pilates and any double leg lifting movements.

    I'm looking at a filling that totally altered my bite years ago...I go look in the mirror and noticed my top teeth slant diagonally down to the right because the left side is completely filled... no wonder my face is so uneven. Going to get my bite fixed asap.

      I'm glad the channel has helped. Pectus Excavatum is talked about in seminars, but I really don't have much experience with it. My guess is that it could contribute to the type of tension that I'm talking about.

      @@NealHallinan muscle tension dysphonia. For no reason, the muscles in my throat tighten on their own. Either when just relaxing, watching TV, working on a PC, and affects singing and speaking (which if not trained makes matters worst). The tongue is part culprit (at least for me - all cases are different, but tension is standard).

    I had braces when I was around 16-17 and I noticed about 2 years later at 19 I started having issues
    10 years later at 29 I still haven’t found a cure
    But reading about the tongue and jaw position I realize that’s why my hip flexors don’t relax. It’s my tongue and jaw
    So what can I do at this point ?

    I also did breathing exercises with a straw and having my tongue and the roof of my mouth and I noticed my hip flexors relaxed.
    So I see progress with that

      I second that!! Had braces, perfect alignments of the front teeth (tho the leftback teeth aint touching, BUT, actually when i relax my jaw it falls off to the leftside; all the time i am closing teeth line my jaw has to be pulled right- to an extent that my hear moves.
      Since then my right sinus cavity isn’t really aired properly and i have repeatedly infections.. right ear also gets blocked and is chronic inflaminated..
      Downwards i am totally twisted..

    Hi Neil,
    How exactly does putting the tongue on the roof of the mouth or pallet switch-off the hip-flexors and how does placing the tongue up on the roof affect the head and neck; does it enable one to pull the neck up to stretch the paravertebals which causes the psoas to relax?
    Also I read elsewhere that the tongue is linked to the myofascia (which you mentioned briefly) or tendinous structures down in the prostate area.
    I remember reading a tip on what to do if you have trouble defecating which was to press the left foot down into the floor to help with this process of elimination. But I'm wondering if you can answer what pelvis-ribcage relationship has to be in place in order to be able to effectively press the left foot down firmly with sustained pressure to facilitate this; does this imply you need to be in the RightAIC position with the pelvis rotated to the left in order to achieve this?

      It's just neurologic tension. PRI is all about "tension management". It's less about biomechanics than people realize. If a tongue can't rest in a normal position, it will cause tension and that tension can be felt elsewhere in the body because of fascia and muscular connections.

    I went to a doctor for lower back pain from repetitive strain. I mentioned that when the back pain started, my foot pain increased. The doctor said that as far as he knew there was no connection between foot and back problems. I was completely speechless, and just walked out. How do you address ignorance of this magnitude?

    I came across your video when looking up a problem with my tongue and the interconnectiveness of these muscles gave me an "ah ha" moment. I have genetically confirmed Ehlers Danlos and Episodic Ataxia Type 6. I struggle with proper alignment everywhere (tongue, forward head position, shoulders, costochonditis from chest breathing, unable to properly use my diaphragm, extreme forward pelvic tilt, hip alignment, hyperextensive knees, cramping calves, feet roll outward, and crazy toe cramps). I've done physical therapy and I am always consciously repositioning my head and shoulders but I can't tuck my tailbone in or breath with my diaphragm no matter how hard I try). On top of this I developed Myasthenia Gravis. I don't even know where to begin. Do you have recommendations on what therapy might help me best?

      I know nothing about either of your aliments, but in terms of alignment and posture, Neal’s PRItrainer UA-cam channel addresses the asymmetry inherent in all humans. I had to watch several of his videos to try to understand the concepts. He also has a starter program on his website. Wishing you the best of luck.

    Are you saying that if there is a crowding problem in the mouth that does not allow the tongue to relax, then you would never be able to get into neutral stance unless the crowding problem in the mouth is fixed first?

      Yes, that can happen. Either the mouth is too small/narrow or the jaw is too far back/retruded.

    @Neal Hallinan Please hear me out. I found PRI, thanks to you, a few days back. Have watched many videos but my problem is a bit different. Few years back I was sitting multiple hours a day in front of computer. I changed my chair a few years back. Last night I was examining my old chair and I noticed that it had two pressure marks where I would normally place my Ischium bone. According to one of your video, we place more weight on the right side. But in my case the left mark is a few mm deeper than the right. Is that normal?

      yes, that can happen. I can only speak in generalities. Some people have learned to stay upright by tilting their upper body to the left to offset the right oriented pelvis and may end up with more weight on their left leg or left sit bone, but that weight won't be supported in true biomechanical terms. It will be supported in compensation.

      That makes sense. I was confused because I clearly have more weight on the left, but my left shoulder is higher with left head tilt, incredibly tight right SCM/scalenes, shortened right leg, shortened right waist (QL and psoas).     i was not able to put the tongue resting properly on the palatine. then i started to learn overtone singing, because it sounds so cool, which had the by product that my tongue fits now perfect. may someone would like also give it a try with overtone singing. and PS its the Diaphragm and the Pelvic floor that needs to get stacked.

      I've never heard of overtone singing but I'm going to look it up! Yes, the diaphragm and pelvic floor need to get stacked, but they both rely on the position of the pelvis and ribcage for proper stacking.

      If the underbite/overbite is causing problems, then sometimes a dentist/orthodontist is needed to fix the bite. Or sometimes an oral flat plane splint is used to keep the jaw/neck relaxed.

    Neal you should address the weak right back muscles like the infraspinatus and delts that are weaken by being stuck in the right stance, I have found out that by strengthening the right infraspinatus, it stabilizes my right shoulder and relieves my right neck. I think there is an X pattern on the upper half of our body, either we use the left back muscles and the right pecs, or we use the left pecs and the right back muscles, but if you are stuck in a right stance, you only use the left back muscles and the right pecs.

    I undertsand what you talk about and it makes sense to be fair but usually people who end up watching this videos are quite anxious looking for solutions for they chronic pain, with time you realize the body is crazy smart and you need to let it heal on its own, breathing and using properly the transverse abdominus and internal obliques is the first line to take care off then hip flexor pain will go away your tongue will get where it should and everything will align.
    BTW usually when you are relaxed and exhale longer than inhale those muscles will activate therefore I think is more of a stress issue than other, good information though, just too much for people looking for answers and not really getting one which is less stress long exhales good nutrition and appropiate exercise regimen

    My PRI practioner made tongue posture one of the first things to learn, can be tough to do though.
    Its just frustrating knowing its possible to fix this, but extremely difficult to actually accomplish. Being in chronic pain all day.

      you should try thumb pulling. my maxilla was too small for proper tongue posture at first but i expanded it a bit by hand and now my tongue fits much easier on the roof of my mouth

    wow, this explains why my scalene muscles get heavy overloaded. My tongue simply hasnt enough space. But is the only solution to let the tongue hang out of the mouth?

      It's complicated. Some people need more space created in their mouth. I actually have a narrow palate and a slight posterior tongue tie, so my tongue doesn't have a ton of space to rest. It can cause lots of neck tension. You need to find a dentist who concentrates on Airway Health.

    I struggle with tongue posture, everything I do mobility wise seems like a conscious effort. I have ADHD an Autism. I realize when I take medication like Adderall, my body seems to align itself naturally. When I'm off my meds, it's back to thinking about how everything is supposed to work and move.

      Dude this is exactly what’s been wrong with me for months too, I have all the issues from top down, but because of my malocclusion and possibly deviated septum, it’s effects will go away while I am on my adhd meds

      @@bennymac6618 Same here, but I wear eyeglasses for myopia. Glasses gives this feeling that everything respect its own place. The sensation is tongue, lips, neck, scalps and abs are working all together.
      I think all human mental or sight problem is due to hypermobolity of the body. When everything is ok, it feels that we are hugging ourselves, embracing our inner world. Some people say that left nostril is parasympathetic nervous system and right nostril the sympathetic one, maybe deviated septum causes lack of self regulation on nervous system. Last week I was praticing lips and nostrils exercises, locking, pressing them for minutes and I could breathe perfectly and my whole body feels alive for the whole night. But its hard to get this perfect place. Yesterday I started to work more on my own tongue, centering it and put a little effort to keep it like a little horn on the middle of my mouth. Cause when I wear my glasses my tongue feels different, smallers, centered, aroused, working all time.

    I don’t get it, I have an open bite, front teeth go right, leave a gap between the front left tooth and the tooth next to it, the right front sticks out more but overlaps the tooth next to it, with my open bite, I don’t know why my tongue cant relax in the back, but it does not provide a good ig “vacuum” to breathe unless I really focus on it, and if I lose it, everything crumbles quickly, it’s weird. This is also with a plethora of other right torsion type of things, so anyone reading this is probably going through something a lot less, ive been through hell since having my wisdom teeth pulled in January ‘22. My questions are just trying to access the cause of why I can’t get neutral even after surgery for septum the other week and wisdom teeth.
    Edit: Neil you probably have seen my comments, my emails, you probably want me to seek pri help, I literally have spent so much money on things to try helping myself that I am at a point where I just meed directions, im going to the dentist this week, hopefully ill have an answer with my now thought process of it being my tongue and open bite again

      mewing its more on expanding the upper palette, like trying to pronounce letters NG , while having mild molar contact, while thinking on letter R triggers a homeostais response, vagus nerve reponse

I think I wouldve greatly benefitted if i knew about the tounge relationship on the muscles or mewing in general. thankfully after very stressful moments i came across mewing and started it about a month and 1 day ago. I had braces for 2 years as a teenager and that greatly changed me. do u think theres anything i can do to help me on my journey to get neutral while im mewing? like do tour technoques etc? anyways thanks for ur content

      @@pigu8734 don't know what to tell you on this, I am farsighted and always had my neck tucked my man ...youll reach at some point in your life where its no longer sustainable cause you elongated enough .... and when youll lift your head might feel strange or even painfull .. and the only thing that will work to push that jaw forward will by sucking it up while pushing on the lower incisors ...

    Real interesting that relaxing the hips is a big part of tai chi and resting the tongue on the roof of the mouth Is something Chinese tai chi teachers emphasise. Must be something to do with this.

    Tongue applications isn't anything new. There's the Bagha where you put your tongue up to the roof of your mouth towards your front teeth to do an 'intention.' Burt Goldman (the American Monk) talked about this in one of his videos. I heard people in martial arts could benefit from using the Bagha tongue technique. Just thought I'd add more here.
