Why Hip Flexors Get Tight: The Role of Sensory Processing
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 лип 2024
- Hip flexor tightness (and the Left AIC pattern) occurs because of improper and unbalanced sensory processing occurring in the brain. You can not stretch your way out of this situation. The hip flexors will relax when your brain begins to re-sense the ground and visual space through re-afferentation.

@00:44 “my blind brain”! This has helped my neurodivergent, adhd, engineering, automation programming (digital & analog inputs & outputs) “blind” brain SO much in understanding what’s going on with my body.
"De-afferentize from the top so you can re-afferentize from the bottom." Mic drop. Well done.
Thanks Hruska Clinic!
Incredible. I have a “dead” left glute inhibited by a tight left hip flexor, piriformis issues on the right, tmj on the right, traps injury on the right, and a tendency to stick my right hip out and lean into it when I stand. Just incredible
Your videos and channel are awesome. I have terrible SI joint pain and left glute pain. I badly broke my foot 30 years ago and was never rehabilitated properly. This all makes sense 👍
I just found you and am amazed how informative and helpful in practical matters your videos are. Thank u so much. The info you are sharing is addressing longtime concerns and questions I’ve had
Fantastic video and explanation Neal!!!
Fantastic video and explanation Neal!
You rock! I love how you put everything in words what my body already knew!
The body knows best!
When I was a teen a chiropractor told me I needed to stretch these muscles. Now I have a jaw that is turned to the left. I have problems regulating my awareness of environment. My neck is constantly tight and so are my shoulder. I am also half flat footed. 😂 This is so insightful. Thank you. I also grind my teeth at night.
How you doing now?
?
Brilliant teaching thank you Neal MAKES SO MUCH SENSE
I'm still stunned, spot on Neal, I'm improved so much day by day, not perfect but 90% improvement of my pain. Thank you
You're welcome. Hope you get to 100%!
What did you do exactly? Please help
@@cl9826Follow the videos of Neal Hallinan and Conor Harris. Both of these guys have helped me hugely.
Can you tell us what helped?
Amazing videos. Thank you so much!
This is amazing this again is my pain patterns.
Wow I am very impressed by this pathomechanism 😮! I have two more teeth in the right and have a larger masseter on the right, right shoulder pain and hip impingement and plantar fasciitis on the right!😳 I feel enlightened. But I believe these all are the end results of my left BP vertigo, which made me sleep on my right all the time. Now I ended up with a low back pain that doesn’t respond to yoga or walking 😢 Thank you very much Neal, I am so grateful to you for these informative videos. You are like a genius to me🙏
Thanks Neal. I'm new to PRI and the concepts, but its making alot of sense to me. I have an appointment with a local PRI Trained PT next week. Just trying to learn and feel as much of this as I can in thr body. Thanks for your generosity in sharing your knowledge
Just recently found your videos, after a year of hip problems, now into right shoulder, wish you were my Dr! You are spot on in my opinion!
Thank you.
Amazing connections!
THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH FOR THIS PRICELESS LIFE-CHANGING INFORMATION!! GOD BLESS YOU!!!!
You're welcome.
thank-you kind sir, this is great info.
You're welcome.
Nice man! Subscribed.
I’ve always had issues with my right ear and canal, blockages, infections, etc. I’m now suspecting a connection with the muscles on that side
ty this is helpful 🎉
Thank you.
Hi Dr, thank you so much for making this video and for the explanation. I've learned so much and able to better understand the state of my body. Just to clarify, I have the left AIC pattern, but for some reason, more hyperactive on the left side of face (jaw inclined to the left). Is this normal?
Hi Neal, every single thing you mention in this fascinating video from feeling the ground, feet, hip, tmj, SCM, up trap to the teeth position and vision apply to my left side. I'm not sure, if I need to do all the pri training on the right side or having an online consultation with you first. Appreciate your respond. Ali
Thanks boss
Fascinating ! Please post the list for shoes. Thanks.
Hi Neal. Thanks for another great video.
In instances where palate expansion is used, what is it achieving that a splint cannot?
Some people have very narrow palates that cause issues with speech, tongue, swallowing, breathing. A splint can't change that.
I made an appt with a PRI specialist near me. Thank you!!!
Would a silicone rubber anti bruxism bite guard work similar to a tongue depressor?
I have all this but exactly on the opposite side you mention. does that make sense ?
I have exactly everything you said. My right neck is tense and sore 100% of time.
But what can I do about it cause I have hip dysplasia in my left hip.
Could this be a reason why I can no longer get my right knee to my chest? I have been diagnosed with arthritis of my right hip but all my pain is muscular on that side and all my lack of mobility feels like it is just the muscles not allowing my range of motion.
Where can I get help. I have had a bad right side fir years. Horse falls- falls on right side always. A car accident as a teen affected my body. I went through orthogonal Chiropractic for my neck and was greatly helped. I use my neck - jaw fir stability with my body. I can feel it and know it. My bite now has issues. I live in Seattle
How does tounge posture fit in the PRI model? It seems when I keep proper tongue posture it encourages me not to bite down on my teeth. I only ended up keeping the right tounge posture after my rehab which got me out of forward head posture though
I 've improved my posture n I feel so much of relief. Thank you sir Dr for this information . I do see the video s again n again ..
I'm happy to hear that.
Can afferentation deficits make pre-existing binocular vision disorder worse over time? Or does the causality go the other way around?
In fixing my forward head/swayback posture, I'm helping my eyes align better, as well as having better proprioception, but I can't tell what the chicken or the egg is
I suspect a convergence insufficiency & weak left eye lead to a typical left AIC pattern, and a swayback/forward head posture led to decreased hip flexor awareness (I struggle to hinge at my hips) and further visual/sensory issues (tunnel vision)
I clench my jaw muscles/SCM/temporalis/abdomen to stabilize; as a result, I'm 21 and live in pretty constant pain
I got the same problem, jaw teeth, cranium being a patho (not vision). I get how the jaw and teeths will get fixed, of course. But how will the other parts of the cranium? I believe u had that as well?. (assymetry on the sides) Curving kinda. Does it just fix it self automatically being neutral again, just like it changed or will it never.
- Not really the biggest problem, but i just think its "exciting" how the cranium can literally change it self. My jaw is exactly reflecting my pelvis, Higher left, further back on right and down. Its quite interesting understanding it. My circle of people really think im talking a lot of nonsence haha
Second question before i visit the dentist: Could they ever ruin it all if they dont know what they are doing PRI wise, breathing? or is it just as simple as getting it neutral per say (often times). Would be sad to pay 10k. for something u have to get out again
anyone know where I can find that list of pri shoes? 👟 tried looking on the website with no luck:/
Please update your pri shoe list to account for natural toe box shape, as do altra, keen, etc...
Good sir
Thank you.
Hey that top photo is definitely me, like actually me lol would love a video call at least… still torsioned lol
Now I’m getting more depressed about my gradually increasing idiopathic peripheral neuropathy in my feet! Most likely the cause of my recent (2 yrs) progression of all sorts of back, hip, leg pains as well as almost complete collapse of my golf game! Loss of afferents! Can I learn to use other keys?
I don’t even know where to begin with what’s wrong with me. I don’t even know where to start to fix it.
Liked, shared, subbed, commented, and would do it all again if I could. This is truly life changing stuff. Appreciate it👏
Hi Nael can random out of the blue dizzy spells, lack of balance and anxiety caused by this?
Yes, it can. "Grounding" is both a psychological, physical, and physiological reality. So is "ungrounding". When people become "ungrounded" the entire system can get out of whack.
Is it possible for someone to have this phenomenon occur lower down the chain? For example, tensing the intercostals and back muscles to compensate for lack of ground awareness? If so, what strategies could one use to de-afferentize those muscle groups? Thanks!
Yes. That is normal. Backs start to hurt when you lose ground sense. A normal PRI program is designed to address that issue. What I talk about in this video is far less common.
Ive lost all connections :D.
I have chronic hyperventilation to start with, teeth clenching, face tighness, tight deep neck muscles, lose abdominals muscles, shin spits while running, disorientation, no balance, ive lost every sense of reality etc.
I'm currently experiencing this too! Have you gotten better?
I’m in the U.K..wish I could come see you..
Thank you for the video. Currently I don't have enough money to visit a specialist. I do have obvious right-side tightness and my jaw is skewed to the right. What are some solid practices I can incorporate into my routine at this stage? (chewing on the left? left side core exercises? etc.)
Did you fix it?
Wow 😮
ppl who gets an oral splint .. do they have to wear it all day long?
What if I have a lower left canine that is rotated?
Only testing can tell you what role it is playing (if any).
What do you think about the starecta rectifier? Would that help?
I'm not sure of what it is.
Hi, I have the Left AIC pattern and I've been told that I need the PRI orthotics because of my flat feet. I believe my patterns were caused by excessive sitting down with bad posture. If so, do you know why I would need orthotics? Can I not become neutral without the orthotics? Or is the purpose of it to help me stay neutral and not go back into Left AIC? I'm confused, hopefully you can help answer my question. Thanks.
Excessive sitting doesn't help things, but it doesn't get in the way of getting neutral. Establishing neutrality is pretty easy (generally). However....
Flat feet are a structural issue that results in poor foot mechanics, which then may cause hip flexor overactivity. The hip flexor overactivity that prevents you from getting neutral.
So you may need orthotics to help guide proper foot mechanics so the hip flexors aren't used inappropriately. Orthotics are used "to make abnormal feet act normally".
Love it Neal 😀 I have been experimenting with tongue depressors for a little bit and had found by accident putting it behind my canines gave relief to breathing. I'm pretty certain i use the right teeth to keep grounded, so this video has given me clarity as to why.
Thanks mate 😀
PS when talking about orthodontia would we really be talking more about palatal expansion as I already had orthodontia at 13 and it patterned me when not neutral? (Tongue-tie issues)
@@kevinleete8549 What the orthodontia would consist of would be determined by the dentist (or orthodontist). Some people need expansion, some don't. I honestly don't know too much about tongue ties. Some people are quick to "clip" them. Personally, I'm slow to alter the body in any way. Just from what I've seen and experienced, I recommend people go as conservatively and slowly as possible.
@@NealHallinan It would appear that the tongue-tie caused me to mouth breath which then created the malocclusion. I'm doing myofunctional therapy to increase tongue mobility and make up for my high palate.
To be honest though cutting a tongue-tie now isn't going to prevent the patterning from my right teeth, so I would think a splint would be better.
Cheers Neal
@@NealHallinan tongue ties are terrible and cause babies to not be able to latch. Babies with ties long in the past would not gain weight, or fail to thrive (die)
The tongue position can be compromised when it is tied. I had my tongue tie removed as an adult and I could have been saved a lot of trouble if I had it fixed as an infant...it leads to orthodontic issues as I needed jaw surgery/braces as well.
Interesting , so this could be the reason for my teeth grinding when I sleep ( for which my dentist recommended a mouthguard ). I tried the toungue depressor like you showed and it wasn't very comfortable , would a mouthguard have the same result ? Any thoughts on wearing a mouthguard for sleeping ( so as not to damage teeth when grinding ) ? Thanks
It would depend on the mouthguard. Remember, the tongue depressor is just for testing. To determine whether the teeth are an issue. Some people will then need a mouthguard (flat planed acrylic splint).
@@NealHallinan is flat acrylic splint good for tmj?
@@NealHallinan do you have a link to one you recommend friend?
Hey Neal,😊 Do u have any ways to sleep to fix this left aic pattern
Not really, no. Just don't sleep on your stomach.
Can postural misalignment, particularly an anterior pelvic tilt result in FAI? And can you cure FAI by restoring your postural alignment that could be the cause of FAI symptoms?
Yes. It happens all the time.
I'm always grinding my teeth so I chew gum when I sit in the car. Bottom jaw pulls to the right...right neck muscle always over active. Tried the grounding with the paper towel under right arch to get out of right stance. Did it for a few weeks and noticed a difference with left foot pronating better. Stopped this week for a few days and now my right neck is super over Active. Its all coming together now... going to buy some popsicle sticks tomorrow 🤪
Definitely give it a shot. You can combine the paper towel and the tongue depressor. See how you feel.
I have this exact issue. PTing for a year. ALF + splint. Given exercises to activate glutes, left obliques and left diaphragm and deactivate lower back & HFs. Could sciatica make this an impossible task? Struggling with what feels like regression and wondering if nerve damage is the culprit
My guess is that sciatica is the symptom rather than the cause, but you never know.
@@NealHallinan thanks for the reply
Interesting ... I have this exact scenario happening to me where I lost connection to my left side of the body but instead of my right side of jaw being overactive, it's my left side of jaw and neck. Reason why? Would love your response. Thanks
Hi Neal! I am new to your videos... would you be kind reply with the exercises for those who has CO to the left( jaw moves to the left way far), you mentioned it’s easy and not big deal with the PRI technique but I am struggling to find from your videos, sorry. Thank you in advance and please bring more from your daily routine cases, it’s nice to learn and hopefully one day can visit your office personally. Have a great day!
Hi Larissa. It really depends on what is the cause of the jaw being shifted to the left. What I describe in the video is when the jaw is shifted to the left simply because of muscular overactivity of the neck and jaw musculature that has gone on for too long. In this scenario, there is no actual dental issue occurring. "Theoretically", some of the pelvis techniques on my website's "beginner program" could shift the mandible as long as it fits the scenario I described (everything is connected). If the jaw is really far to the left, you'll need a PRI therapist to help.
Just wondering if this can be fixed in people who have this problem but also have dentures?
I believe so.
❤
Have you ever considered crawling on all 4s? barefoot bear crawling. It is directly related to the gait pattern in humans. It ties together both the left and right shoulders to the left and right hips. It also teaches the diaphragm to independently from the limbs. Just curious of your opinion on it.
There is a PRI technique that uses crawling. It just has you crawling to the left and breathing in a way that always keeps the left abs engaged.
I've never really tried crawling, nor have I used it with anyone, so I don't have much of an opinion on it. In theory, I'm fine with it.
So you have a vid you recommend showing correct bear crawl form?

Where is the pri shoe list?
You can Google it.
Just had my right wisdom tooth pulled as it was severely getting in the way. Now I sense right canine massively instead. 0 contact on my left side when I line up my jaw.
HOWEVER, I seem to actually be shifted to the left when I bite🤔 is this normal?
Btw I'd be willing to bet I'm one of the most severe cases of left AIC etc patterns you'd ever seen
You can be shifted to the left (at least part of your body can be) but you will still have an overall "orientation" to the right. If you are in the US, you should see a PRI therapist. Occlusion issues can't be figured out by yourself, and not just by a dentist, because they won't take the rest of your body into account.
@@NealHallinan I managed to find one in the UK (thank god). Been focusing on tongue posture, and using a make-shift splint for when I do the techniques, but haven't seen his dentist yet as I understand it can get quite expensive. Been making good progress so far though 👍
i am left handed and it seems everything you are describing is what i’m experiencing but on the opposite side. However, u mention that no one is truly on their left leg and no one has right AIC. so i’m currently lost

Hi Neal, What's your take on double jaw surgery fixing bite asymmetry. Do you think it as an option to achieve neutrality?
I truly don't know anything about it in regards to PRI. Sorry.
I had left neck tension re positioned my jaw to the left I just realized it went away! Even after an hour on the PC, I was about to get off but it went away!
Finally got some tongue depressors to test this out, and yes, went totally neutral. Floored by this video. Hoping I can re-afferentize from the ground up by doing PRI exercises while using the tongue depressor!
🎉
While biting the tongue depressor, i just EASILY performed a couple PRI exercises with proper ground sense that I’ve been struggling with for months (though I’d made slow but meaningful progress). I’ve removed the splint now, and the ground sense remains with a “solidity” that I’ve been yearning for.
Your words also made me realize that the insane amounts of walking I did in Chicago while wearing Vans for 15+ years (some days 25k+ steps) probably has something to do with where I’m at. I was that young guy who thought he was indestructible, until I took an afferentized (sp?) right hook to the jaw just so my brain would know where it was. Weird/unexpected world, but awesome.
If I’ve experienced this within 10 minutes of finishing your video… I feel ridiculously enthusiastic about where things are headed.
Thanks Neal. You deserve a ton of great stuff.
Neil, i messaged you on Facebook and IG .
I hope that nobody goes and get wisdom teeth extraction after watching this video. And I hope that most people understand that most of the issues related with occlusion started after wisdom teeth extractions and drilling molars when doing fillings. With every teeth that you lose you lose vertical dimension of your face and your posture collapses, that's why all those old people have bad posture, because they have no teeth and zero vertical dimension. Guys please wake up, dentists which are basically butchers are everywhere and basically are ruining your lives. Unless you can find a dentist who is well-educated in PRI i would never ever again to one, no matter what is going on with my teeth. I have lost two years of my life completely fucked up and who knows if I will get my life back again to normal at least to some degree. Please wake up everybody, this is not a joke, you can basically get your life completely ruined just by teeth extraction or by all those other stuff that those butchers do on everyday level.
I'm sorry to hear about your experiences, Dario. Truly.
Yep, once you lose your natural bite, you’re screwed. I’m in a similar situation. Still trying, but I know I’ll never be the same, as the cranium and body continue to twist.
I keep hearing you speak about a shoe list, but can't find it...
"Google" PRI Shoe List, Hruska Clinic.
How does PRI work without 1st getting stoned I wonder?
Unfortunately, I doubt I will get neutral ever again. Orthodontists ruined my life and I'm only 25!
Sorry to hear that man, dentists butchers and orthodontists are destroying lives everyday basically. My dentist destroyed mine two years ago and I am only 29.
