Why Movement and Breathing Have to be Addressed Simultaneously

  • Movement and breathing are intimately linked, though not coupled. This means that our movement occurs independently from our breathing, but they are still connected through our muscles and fascia.
    The same muscles that are involved in compensatory, non-diaphragmatic breathing, are also involved in compensatory position of extension and compensatory movement. Non-compensatory breathing relies on non-compensatory postural stability and vice versa.
    Therefore it is pointless to try and fix breathing mechanics without also fixing postural stability and movement. Likewise it's pointless to fix faulty movement without simultaneously addressing breathing mechanics.
    Postural Restoration recognizes this truth of human physiology and that's why PRI techniques can not be done properly without position of the body, muscular timing, and respiration all being addressed at once.

    Wow! Thank you! I feel like I just hit the jackpot! I’m 84 and have been trying to connect the dots for over 20 yrs. Lots of history but I’ll cut to the chase. One second I’m walking ‘normally’….at my usual gait…and suddenly, my hips tilted forward so that my back became a concave shape like a swayback. Instantly, my gait shortened. That was in 2000. New symptoms and more pain. In 2002, had first episode of (what we’re calling) myoclonus. The abs, diaphragm (and colon?) contracted and released at the rate of 2 times per second. Sounds like an exaggeration but isn’t. Very painful. Panted like a dog…would last for an hour until the ambulance got there. ER would give me an IV of Valium. It would stop immediately. I’d have a nap and go home. I started with Western method, neurologists, MRI’s and worked my way to the East…acupuncture, etc. Am currently with Feldenkrais and biofeedback. It’s helping somewhat but still need a walker to get around. The myoclonus starts to threaten and I take a small dose of Valium to ward it off. Anty exercises you can give an 84 yr old who can’t get onto the floor or bring her knee into her chest would be so appreciated! Thanks again.❤

    Hi Neal
    I want to thank you for all the videos you post on UA-cam. I have immersed myself with them these past few weeks. From what I have learned so far, PRI is going to be life changing. It already has made an impact on me.
    Your past medical history sounds somewhat close to mine with some deviations. Not quite the same visual disorder, but mine added fuel to the fire of my Left AIC pattern.
    I don’t have any questions. Just wanted to reach out and thank you. Hope you are having a great May.

      I noticed that as well. I have lots of "before" and "after" pictures. The jaw looks more defined because my entire cranium has re-aligned into a more "neutral" pattern. My nose won't budge, though!

    Great Video! I do understand movement and breathing are coupled. Recently, I Just got this idea, breahing is giving movement a buffer range for normal movement occur. For instance, when I want a 180 degree shoulder flexion, I need anterior ribs ER, but if I stuck in extension pattern, which means I have already be in a state of anterior ribs ER, so I might not be able to get full shoulder flexion. Correct me if I'm wrong. A fan from China.

    • @NealHallinan
      @NealHallinan  3 роки тому

      Hi Ian. Shoulder flexion is confusing and took me many years to understand from a PRI perspective. I'm going to make a video about it. In actuality we don't want to ER our ribs when we perform shoulder flexion. If we did, that would result in extension of the back. We need our ribcage to move opposite of the raising arm. So as the arm moves forward and up, our ribcage needs to move back and down, which is more of anterior rib IR. Thought of another way, the clavicle needs to rotate up while the ribs stabilize. If the ribs rotate up with the clavicle, you'll overuse your upper traps.

    Hey Neal, I think am in a right torsion. Jaw slightly to the right, nose as well and right eye is lower. Less space for the tongue on the right. Right shoulder is higher. My right floating rib is protruding more than left. And I also have chicken legs perhaps because I have no hamstring, because both my legs are externally rotated and I might be mainly quad dominant. When I was working out (not now because I'm doing a PRI program) I could do 200-300kg on leg press but in conventional squat I'd struggle with 100kg.
    My PRI therapist told me to do the Supine Hooklying Hamstring with IO/ TA and I've been doing it about twice a day since 9th of April. What do you think about supplementing with hamstring work like nordic curls? I tried to do a few doing like 1/3 of the movement before falling on my face lol and then on the next day felt more stable and had soreness on hamstrings (more on left ham) and lower abs (as I also performed them with proper form so that my butt is not sticking out etc.) And that was only 3 reps for one set, like.... not even having a proper workout and I think I felt a difference. What are your thoughts?

    • @NealHallinan
      @NealHallinan  3 роки тому +1

      Personally I’d stick with just PRI techniques. You’re going to create too much tension with weight training. Right torsions need way LESS tension in their lives.

      Most people won’t feel a tense left diaphragm and probably not the left hip flexor either. Feeling tightness on the right side is normal in both the hip flexor and right abdominals/intercostals.
