  • Two different encounters with the IS group and well-connected gangsters I had in Turkey whilst on holiday and transiting through this fantastic country in 2012 and 2016.

It's not just a Turkish problem it's a worldwide problem, but it doesn't even come down to religion in my opinion, we all live in a dangerous world where the worst crimes can happen right outside your front door. It's probably best not to be drunk in a foreign land and always Keep your wits about you.

perfect response Nomad, this is an example of someone who tries to use anything and everything he sees and twist it for their own political agenda. somehow extrapolated an anecdotal experience into "islamic countries are no go zone".

I've been to Turkiye twice and didn't have the best experience either time. The first time was when I was about 10 when we went to Bodrum. I thought it was tacky, the beaches weren't all that great and the Turks weren't friendly to tourists. The second time was 3 years ago when a girlfriend and I went to Istanbul. I found Istanbul overpriced and full of con artists and again the Turks weren't friendly to us. I also picked up on an increasing move toward Islamic fundamentalism under Erdogan the second time I was there. The government is still secular on paper but hard-line fundamentalists have loads of control over society behind the scenes.

Yes Erdoğan has a lot to answer for. I've had a bit of a different experience this time because I was with a Turkish friend the time in western Turkey

Now those are a couple stories I hope to never rival. Grandkids will love those travel tales. Just got mugged my first night in Tamatave last night. Black eye and some sore bones but no loses. The 3 thieves lost their ball caps and sandels. I needed a hat.

Get In there Andy 💪 You must be unlucky though because getting mugged in Madagascar is not common. Don't go the police they can't do anything except waste your time and take money from you. It is best to use taxis after dark.

Africa and Latin America are more dangerous; being alone after dark is risky. The eastern port city of Tamatave (Toamasina) has sharks both in and out of the water. Take extra precautions or have fun in the less-physical milieu of SE Asia.

The plot thickened..Moral of the story or third time lucky:when travelling to Turkey,do so on your own

It's highly advisable to look after your loved ones and not get drunk in a foreign land, It's also advisable to stay away from certain areas of Turkey due to conflicts and wars kidnapping and extortion attempts at the moment according to the British government.
Yeah, definitely, third time lucky its all going well so far.

Yes a common problem , feel for Merry Can , not even safe in her Hotel room . 👎
Similar thing happened to 2 Canadian and Irish girls travelling with us in Iraklion , Crete , Greece in 1986 .
Took her to the Cops the next day and they basically just laughed and were unhelpful . 👎
The Girls had been slipped a Micky . 👎
Unfortunately you have to be on your guard everywhere . ☹️👎
