There needs to be an ACNH event where the rivalry between Nook and Redd is in full swing, and you're caught in the middle of it as a customer to both parties.
I take subtle humor in that the clip used in 10:55 "It's not all smoke and mirror counterfeits like Redd" the clip depicts investigating the Beautiful Statue... ... ... Which isn't a fake. (The fake one has a necklace)
And I don’t think every single kitsune were malevolent, either. ...although the horndogs who get their souls sucked out by yokai? Yeah they pretty much always deserve it.
In the Touhou Project, a character named Mamizou Futatsuiwa doesn't *_quite_* get along with kitsune. And another character named Ran Yakumo just so happened to be one. I've understood Mamizou's hatred of kitsune until now. Thanks for the video, Gaijin Goombah! Also, the two characters never meet up in canon.
but Mamizou does encounter a kitsune posing as Marisa in the official manga "wild and horned hermit". At the Time Reimu had the fox tied up and gagged and was preparing to "exterminate" the "evil youkai", Mamizou didn't care, she was perfectly happy to leave the kitsune to it's fate...
I love Redd..he's always been my favorite npc sleaze and all..as a LOVER of art..I find picking apart his art fun XD since I've personally seen a lot of the original pieces.
I love redd as a character, he’s so cool. I don’t hate Nook tho, he’s definitely nicer than in the first games where he called me Short. I... took it a bit personally.
I didn't realize the yokai connection until you made this vid. I remember seeing the fox and tanuki duo from Shaman King. I loved that show back then. I remember those two characters.
I've set up two business rivals in a town in my current Pathfinder campaign who _very definitely_ aren't a disguised tanuki and kitsune, don't be ridiculous. This was a gold mine for their future interactions with one another. Thanks a ton!
I don't even play Animal Crossing (though I admit I'm becoming tempted to give it a shot), but this was still fascinating. Also, bravo on the Tanuki race for D&D! Totally buying that.
Part of me listening to this is imagining a Kitsune hearing all the stories about Danzanburo and is just like "Nope, nope nope" and builds a wall around the island THROUGH the ocean to keep the Tanuki INSIDE the island.
So we have Crazy/Jolly Redd as our Animal Crossing representation of some form of a Yako Kitsune, Animal Crossing should have a Zenko Kitsune example included too in my honest and personal opinion. Tom Nook would be surprised that good foxes do exist.
I mean, in Pathfinder you could talk to your master about using the race creation rules to create a tanuki race. Alternatively reskinning the kitsune may not be a bad idea, and if you are playing Pathfinder 2e, well.... Kitsune are one of the core races in Tian Xia and a very popular race in 1e so it will probably come back and then you could reskin it (or adapt a gnome, Pathfinder gnomes do have a similar flavor as good ilusionists after all).
@@unfortunatewitnessX Pathfinder player means that he plays Pathfinder and not D&D, Pathfinder 1e was basically a reworked and/or rebalanced version of 3.5 D&D that discarded prestige classes in favor of arquetypes or "alternative class feathures but in a package" over time and that in its 2e reworked combat completely and nerfed casting a lot in favor of having feat-focused characters.

So does this explain why so many franchises/ merchandise involving a raccoon or tanuki there's always gonna be a gox/ kitsune along with it? For example Mario's tanuki suit. Luigi had a tanuki suit as well but then the suit was changed to a kitsune suit. Raccoon ears and tail for mario, fox ears and tail for luigi.
The kanji 三 in 団三郎 is read “zabu”. Also seen in 九九 (multiplication table) where “3 × 6 = 18” is recited as “saburoku jūhachi” (三六 十八). Probably it has to do with the fact that, if I recall correctly, the character’s older Chinese reading was something like “sam”, which explains why it can branch out and evolve into “san” and “sab(u)” at the same time. Perhaps the trailing “r” caused the reading alteration to avoid n-r consonant sequence? (I’m just guessing as a Japanese linguistics major.)
The funny thing is, the Myths and Legends podcast just did an episode on tanuki, and it included both the referenced tales mentioned here (with some minor changes).
@ 8:35 I feel for you Gaijin, been leaning Japanese myself for the past few months and bleeding hells Kanji is ridiculous. Hiragana and Katakana are pretty straight forward but mercy on the poor souls regarding Kanji.
Every gaijin goombah episode is basically a guy arguing with himself about whether or not his imaginary friend is a ninja, and they all manage to entertain and educate me. Great content.
I wonder if you will ever do a video on BNA: Brand New Animal, since the MC is a tanuki who's old friend is a fox and they have something of a falling out, but both have shape shifting powers. I don't know how much it takes from folklore, but it could be worth looking into.
Damn! Danzaburou is kind of a badass. Also, while I do love playable races, thank you for that, I know some of my player are going to love this, :) Could we also get stat blocks for Yokai as monsters that the player's can interact and fight with?
So let me get this straight. Kitsune are shown as evil jerks and Tanuki are more like friends that may play pranks on you but don't really wanna hurt people. Is that correct?
Tom nook is a teacher who starts out super harsh in the early games but realizes that some times just leaving the person to learn can be a lot better for all involved.
Great video! I love your videos and cultural analysis, Gaijin!! I'll for sure be checking out your playable Tanuki, and all your other awesome D&D endeavors~ Shout out to the Daimyo Procession lol
Before watching: Probably something about Kitsune and Tanuki not getting along or whatever, one of them probably likes to play pranks while the other is like "get off my lawn, you young _sonofasoandso"_
Arif Lewar Probably with Redd’s descendant, not Redd himself. ...like if there’s a smol orphaned Fox? Tom might break his own rule a bit (and grumble the entire time about it being against his better judgement). The Fox prolly becomes a florist or something.
I think that brief clip from The Sword in the Stone, to illustrate the centuries old "transforming competition" (among other battles) between the tanuki and kitsune, was the first Disney animation visual reference I have seen Gaijin use in the 5+ years I've been subbed to the channel. When my sister was watching this video, saying it was between Tom Nook and a fox, I knew there was going to be yokai battle going on between two of the more famous yokai covered in this series; I just didn't know that they shared a common ancestor from China (appearance) and a common linguistic ancestry ('mujina' from the Nihon Shogi). You learn more every time you tune in. Thanks Gaijin... I mean GimGam. lol
Thanks to this I have several questions about another video game Tanuki: Mamizou Futatsuiwa, from Touhou Ten Desires. I mean, she and Ran Yakumo (a Kitsune btw) have this kind of relationship but, if the Kitsune was called Futatsuiwa, why does she, a Tanuki, have a Kitsune's surname as her own? And she said her power was Top 3 above all Tanuki? I think you should check that franchise, it has Japanese myths and legends everywhere, but play it under your own risk! It's genre isn't called "bullet hell" for nothing.
Hey Gaijin! great video! and if i could make a suggestion, BNA: Brand New Animal would be a fantastic anime to check out for your chanel, given that 2 of the central characters are a Tanuki and a Kitsune :))

*Me after watching the entire video:*
“I just knew there was a reason I never liked Lyle...”
It's crazy how much folklore they managed to shove into New Horizons without us noticing. It just gives the game more depth in my opinion.
I’ll admit, I feel miffed that the sleezy conniving Redd is the only fox representation in Animal Crossing. We need more foxes!
It's probably because of that where Tom decided "No. No foxes. Ever."
Exactly, there are many types of foxes such as Fennec foxes, arctic foxes or even coyotes
Digstreme McDingus maned wolf as well( it looks like a fox but I don’t think it is one )
Say the truth, is this coming from a fox?
And I don’t think every single kitsune were malevolent, either.
...although the horndogs who get their souls sucked out by yokai? Yeah they pretty much always deserve it.
Animal Crossing's Tom Nook and Redd : BITTER TO EACH OTHER
Kirby's Pon and Con : Chill Dads
@@Shadow-ck5vc Ok, but I meant between Mamizou and Ran.
Mamizou is Danzaburou by the way
Kinda off topic but:

You owe Tom Nook 98,00 bells
I love Redd..he's always been my favorite npc sleaze and all..as a LOVER of art..I find picking apart his art fun XD since I've personally seen a lot of the original pieces.
i love his sleexe and how little he actually bothers to hide it. also since i love the fakes more than the real ones most of the time
Redd gets loved, Tom gets hated. There's something wrong with this timeline.
@@krsynx Even Tom is self-aware of the hate he gets. :P
I love redd as a character, he’s so cool.
I don’t hate Nook tho, he’s definitely nicer than in the first games where he called me Short.
I... took it a bit personally.
Redd has to be in my top 5 of favorite npcs
When you realize both kitsune and tanuki are members of the canine family
the tanuki's english name is the Raccoon Dog that's why tom is refer as a coon in the english ver

I didn't realize the yokai connection until you made this vid. I remember seeing the fox and tanuki duo from Shaman King. I loved that show back then. I remember those two characters.
I always love animal crossing and Tom Nook, I especially loved the way you told the stories using Nook and Redd and Redd going "super saiyan."
Got the Book. Can't wait to play with it.
This has definitely changed the way I see Tom Nook. He's the good guy, he isn't Tom Crook like I thought, he never was.
I remember when you were on game theory
Yep... Me too. But that hasn't stopped me from continuing my work!
Yep, it's how I found his content. He was great there, he's great here.

@@GaijinGoombah may I ask why you left game theroy?
Despite my sheer disgust with that channel, I found a lot of good people from it. Gaijin, FootOfAFerret, Drake, Ronnie...I miss Ronnie
You take that well deserved break man, I'm grateful for the consistent content. Enjoy.
Hi again
You agiain
I every time I see Redd I follow him around until he leaves , I find it cute when he sniffs flowers
Hell yeah JWittz is a treasure. He's the type of guy who makes you feel nice and cozy, just by talking about whatever.
Part of me listening to this is imagining a Kitsune hearing all the stories about Danzanburo and is just like "Nope, nope nope" and builds a wall around the island THROUGH the ocean to keep the Tanuki INSIDE the island.
Hope you have fun on your break

So we have Crazy/Jolly Redd as our Animal Crossing representation of some form of a Yako Kitsune, Animal Crossing should have a Zenko Kitsune example included too in my honest and personal opinion. Tom Nook would be surprised that good foxes do exist.
Plot twist: Isabelle was a Zenko kitsune in disguise all along.

Oooh tanooki race "Cries in pathfinder player"
Your pfp is deceptively scary
I mean, in Pathfinder you could talk to your master about using the race creation rules to create a tanuki race. Alternatively reskinning the kitsune may not be a bad idea, and if you are playing Pathfinder 2e, well.... Kitsune are one of the core races in Tian Xia and a very popular race in 1e so it will probably come back and then you could reskin it (or adapt a gnome, Pathfinder gnomes do have a similar flavor as good ilusionists after all).
Ah, the song of my people.
What is Pathfinder Player and what's the direct online link to that?
@@unfortunatewitnessX Pathfinder player means that he plays Pathfinder and not D&D, Pathfinder 1e was basically a reworked and/or rebalanced version of 3.5 D&D that discarded prestige classes in favor of arquetypes or "alternative class feathures but in a package" over time and that in its 2e reworked combat completely and nerfed casting a lot in favor of having feat-focused characters.
Heh, they were actually able to get away with having a naked historical artifact in the game without any outcry.

Tom nook: Lets you pay your taxes and bills whenever, or just never, Supplies your WHOLE island and helps you get so much, is like a father figure!
Redd: Scams you a ton, never changes, ridiculous and overpriced, like that dude on the street selling random "antique" rusty crap.

Also people: WHY ISN'T REDD SPAWNING ON MY ISLAND 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😫😫😫😫😫
y si, aparte tom nook te deja sacar el reciclaje y un día me toco un mueble MARAVILLOSO
I love Animal Crossing, not only cause it’s peaceful and cute, but also the deep lore like THIS, it’s amazing
@ 8:35
I feel for you Gaijin, been leaning Japanese myself for the past few months and bleeding hells Kanji is ridiculous.
Hiragana and Katakana are pretty straight forward but mercy on the poor souls regarding Kanji.
Every gaijin goombah episode is basically a guy arguing with himself about whether or not his imaginary friend is a ninja, and they all manage to entertain and educate me. Great content.
That explains Shukaku and Kurama’s relationship in the Naruto series. Ironic that their human partners became friends, isn’t it?
Zer0 W0lf
It’s because of Naruto’s Therapy no Jutsu.
(Before that Gaara was content to just kill him or let Shukaku cause mayhem on the Fox’s Turf.)
okay but this is the first of your videos i’ve watched in at least a year and you’ve seriously improved so much!! good on you, Goombah :)
Also, while I do love playable races, thank you for that, I know some of my player are going to love this, :)
Could we also get stat blocks for Yokai as monsters that the player's can interact and fight with?
I feel sorry for him though, with him being a tanuki aand having his testicles be made of brass
Pretty racist tho
So let me get this straight. Kitsune are shown as evil jerks and Tanuki are more like friends that may play pranks on you but don't really wanna hurt people. Is that correct?
Yup
Ah yes, the two types of foxes, the good boiz and the sneaky boiz.
Dazan: *in his thoughts* "this Fox is empty" *5 minutes later* YEET!
*Kitsune:* Excuse me, do you know how to get to town?
*Danzaburo:* Yeah it's back the way you came. * _cocks a shotgun_ *
11:48 You did not- oh my god you did 👀
I love the channel and more than appreciate the community involvement. Keep up the good work!
This is why I don’t ship them like everyone on TikTok does
Contrarily, the vengeful bloodlust and rage is the exact reason people are shipping them.
Tom nook is a teacher who starts out super harsh in the early games but realizes that some times just leaving the person to learn can be a lot better for all involved.
5:18 The term "mujina" seems to have been adopted to Hawaiian urban lore about these 3 trickster creatures and call all 3 as mujina in general.
Redd: Ayy wassup everyone?
Tom Nook: F**k off
Great video! I love your videos and cultural analysis, Gaijin!! I'll for sure be checking out your playable Tanuki, and all your other awesome D&D endeavors~ Shout out to the Daimyo Procession lol
8:40 Talks about dyslexia but shows a dyscalculia representation. Dyscaculia is practically dyslexia but for numbers and math.
Maybe he has both
Enjoy the break, Gai!
Even when stuck inside, people still need a break, even/especially when working at home. :)
I suggested the connection between Tom Nook and Danzaburou on a previous video. So seeing you talk about it in this video made my day.
団 (dan) = group
三郎 (saburou) = three sons
狸 (tanuki) = raccoon
Hence the group of 3 raccoons, Tom Nook, Timmy, and Tommy.
Now THAT is a culture shock!
Before watching: Probably something about Kitsune and Tanuki not getting along or whatever, one of them probably likes to play pranks while the other is like "get off my lawn, you young _sonofasoandso"_
Now I thinking "can this rivalry end some day? "
Arif Lewar
Probably with Redd’s descendant, not Redd himself.
...like if there’s a smol orphaned Fox? Tom might break his own rule a bit (and grumble the entire time about it being against his better judgement).
The Fox prolly becomes a florist or something.
@Anonymous Fellow Ripoff Timmy and Tommy
Oh, wow! That was a lot more lore than I thought was available for those two! And that Daimyo procession!? Savage!!!
6:21 is that why animal crossing objects are leaves???
Another great one! Great job! Can't wait to try your Yokai races
I would love to play as a Tanuki I've never played D&D before but that sounds fun
The best thing about this video is how you call Timmy and Tommy 'Nooklings'.
I love that:
From business partner.... toooo.... *internets*
Triple the internet points for the cameos of the hilarious Kokkuri-san and probably my favorite of the Oboro Muramasa DLCs.
My friends say that Nook and Redd are married and were going to get a divorced but redd left without signing the divorce papers.
This is my favorite series you make by far
Hey Gaijin! great video!
