I know 😕 everyone is so mean to him. That’s why I always try to be extra nice to him. I visit him about 4 times every day. And even if I don’t need to talk business I just stay in resident Services for like 2 minutes. (I know I’m a weirdo!)

Someone actually made a dark but interesting comic about what "the incident" was. I can't find it, but basically Redd got Tom working in the black market with him. They did some shady jobs but Redd crossed the line when he tried to get Tom in on an Animal Trafficking scheme. This comic is also an origin story for Timmy and Tommy, the two being orphans who are kidnapped by Redd to be sold, and then later freed and adopted by Tom. I really like it even though it's a bit too dark for the series. It definitely makes Tom's hate for Redd justified though, and makes the relationship between Tom and the Nooklings much more interesting.
One thing I thought is that Tom was abused by Redd and bullied by him

I was just reading up on the tanuki - apparently male tanukis are really great dads! They bring the females food when they're pregnant, and help raise the pups when they're born. If that's not the cutest thing ever, I don't know what is.
alright here’s my timmt and tommy theory: while tom was going through hard times, he went back to his tree stump to just sit and think, he then saw timmy and tommy inside the stump, with no one in sight to care for them, so he took them in ( there’s no evidence of this i just want it to be true :) )

I think I know what happened! So maybe when Tom was in the city he met redd and they became close friends (even business partners) but redd could have taken advantage of Tom at one point and since they were so close redd could have in a way taken all of toms money, wither it be asking for money, scamming him, or just literally steal from him. This could be why Tom didnt talk to sable a lot since for a long time he had trust issues and didn’t want a repeat of what happened with Redd, but is starting to regain her trust once more (this explains why sable and Mabel have a shop on the island) also I think that redd and Tom could have met during the city since how you stated Tom was somewhat a bad kid in school and we can tell just from gameplay that Redd probably was a bad person in his ‘golden years’

Nook is too underrated. He literally makes animal crossing.....animal crossing. He is the only reason the game has challenge and lore of such. Without nook the game would have less things to work for and the game would go by faster. We should give the boy more love

He is one of my favourite NPCs. People say he's only in it for the money but he is kind hearted and cares for the player.
My theory:
After "the incident" Tom doesn't really trust anyone anymore. He found Timmy and Tommy about to sell their bells to Redd, and then Nook just took them in after he stopped Redd. Nook then met Isabelle, and then they became friends. Nook, lastly, meets you. He thinks that although you barely have any money, you might be the one to help him get his dreams back. That is why he recruited you to the deserted getaway package. He wants your help.
I used to be so mad with Tom, always forcing me to pay him. Watching this makes me want to write him a billion letters saying sorry and give him all the loan money he needs :0

I can't believe people still hate Tom just because he was kinda mean in the old games. I mean I can see why, but he had to act like that since he already was having a hard time in the city so I wouldn't blame him acting that way because of how stressed he could of been. But luckily, he is much more nicer and isn't forcing others anymore. He even lets others pay their bills whenever. I sometimes like to think that during his downfall, money was his only friend when leaving Sable since he already had trust issues after meeting Redd

I believe that “the incident” between that shifty fox and Nook was that he, referring to the fox, developed a friendship with Nook. Then one day, the fox convinced Nook to buy some fake artwork for a high price. Nook, being the trusting man he is, accepted the offer and gave away tons of bells. When Nook found out the artwork was a phony, he was furious. He went out to find the devious fox that had scammed him only to find he skipped town. Nook vowed to never let anybody hurt him again, ruining his friendship with Sable and turning him into the greedy man he is. Over the years, he’s softened and gradually mended his relationship with Sable. Thus making him the happy tanooki he once was.

I would always believe, Tom Nook adopted Timmy and Tommy as not only a way to run the shop when he put grew it to stay in the family but as a way to help himself heal from the damage Redd had caused him. Hopefully in smaller updates dialogue like that can be added where maybe they can get Tom Nook in animal crossing new horizons to leave his post once in a while to reminisce about the past and where he wanted to go forward.

I used to be on the bandwagon of Tom haters until I started talking to him more and realized how much he helped me through the beginning of the game. Celebrating every time I built something new on my Island.. now one of my favorite parts of the day in game is going into resident services to see him and use the Nook stop 😊. Always give people at least a little chance.

Unlike the Kirby series where Kirby can actually just show his insane lore off because he’s a god, animal crossing keeps their more secretive.
*[Long Boi]* I've actually been wanting to create a fancomic with Tom Nook as the main character for a while; it blurs the lines between Canon and Fanon, with the intent to appeal to fans who grew up with the games so is considered an AU (and very-much-NOT 'Rated E for Everyone'), but most of the established characters and their history/lore are "preserved but expanded", basically.
This has sparked a bit of my inspiration; I've been trying to properly research this series as a non-player in preparation, and I didn't know about the tree stump lore. I'll try not to spoil too much in my "outline"... and it's still being adjusted, what with various life happenings RN. _I'm open to ideas~_
I think that Tom getting scammed goes *much* deeper; I actually think he and Redd were childhood friends, with Tom being the too-smart-for-his-own-good naïve kid who tried to fit in, but felt under-stimulated by the normal minutia of school life. Redd was the opposite; the idiotic and impulsive upstart wild-child who basically gave Tom some good times, but because of old-fashioned distrust of foxes was an outcast who didn't attend school, and was discouraged for almost anything.
I do think Tom had parents. They lived closely in their little tree stump abode as the "prototypical countryside family", for the most part. His lore spiel in New Leaf implies that his failure in "The Big City" probably wasn't his first time there nor his last, as he says he was "a tanuki of action"; I think his father was a Car Salesman who had to occasionally pack up his family and move them to the Big City for a month or two. (I also think its different and located much further from The City in City Folk.) So other than his wild trips, his friendships helped him to not be as bored of his lifestyle. ...But then, a tragedy occurred when he was still young. Unfortunately, this was after Redd moved away from The Village (common with Yako Yokai since they're vagabonds... for obvious reasons).
Tom's mom eventually gave the abode to him to do what he wanted, as she desired to move to The Big City permanently to try and alleviate her own grief. Various things happened while he lived on his own, like meeting Blathers; someone else who he related to since he was also a brilliant youth with wild and crazy dreams. But... the countryside irked Tom, for some reason. Maybe it was his own grief, maybe he didn't desire the "easy life". Whichever it was, he later moved to the Big City as a fresh, naïve adult...
To meet up with a certain someone, where they opened a certain business.... and, well.....
Needless to say, it doesn't work out. The comic starts with Tom's bitter departure from the Big City. And... other things happen, before and after that. For instance, Tom's-- er-hem-- ""friendship"" with Redd helping him realize that * GASP, SHOCK *... ｡+ﾟ☆ﾟ+｡★｡+ﾟ he's gay. ｡+ﾟ☆ﾟ+｡★｡+ﾟ _...Buut~_
