Hey, I do posts on Mesoamerican history and culture, and have worked with a number of other channels do content on the topic: I think it's really cool to see you delving into the topic, and hope it's not the last video from you on it, but wanted to chime in here with some corrections and clarification. Firstly, the Inca are not Mesoamerican: Mesoamerica refers to a group of cultures located for the most part in the bottom half of Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize, which share specific traits like pyramidal temples, maize as a cereal crop, key deity archetypes such as Feathered Serpent gods or Goggled/Fanged Rain gods. While some cultures in Northern Mexico (it + the Southern US containing Aridoamerican tribes and chiefdoms) or further into Central America (if we're being technical, Central America in an Archeological/Anthropological context exclusively refers to the area and cultures *under* Mesoamerica/Mexico) arguably fit into the broader Mesoamerican cultural sphere, the Inca are much, much further away: The distance between, say, the captial of the Aztec and Inca Empires are 4000 kilometers apart, as far as London in the British isles is from Baghdad in Iraq, or the Aztec Captial/Mexico city is from Canada! The Inca are from a different group of complex cultures down in South America known as Andean civilizations (other examples being the Chavin, Nazca, Paracas, Moche, Wari, Tiwanku, Sican, Chimu, etc) which have their own set of defining cultutral traits., and developed totally independently from Mesoamerican civilizations, with the two regions having little to no direct contact, less then Ancient or Medieval Europe had with the Islamic World, India, or even China. Mesoamerican and Andean cultures are really only compared or grouped together because in a modern context, both are what's in now Latin America. As such, I'm not really able to talk much about what you talk about regarding Inti or Andean influences in this video, but it's certainly not Mesoamerican! I will say the image shown at 4:43 is depicting a battle with at least some Mesoamerican influences: Beyond the step-pyramids in the background, the most decorated figure in the foreground is wearing a warsuit (The Aztec/Nahuatl term being Tlahuiztli, though I believe the art is basing the figure on a painting by Angus Mcbride of a Zapotec Warlord, based on depictions from the Codex Zouche-Nuttal, which is one of a few surviving Mixtec books which escaped the Spanish book burnings. The Mixtec and Zapotec civilizations were both located in Southern Mexico, in what's now Oaxaca and Guerrero, and their cities often had political marriages, so Zapotec city-states and rulers show up in some of the surviving Mixtec Codices) with a Flayed God (known as Xipe Totec to the Aztec/Nahuas) motif, hence the end of the sleeves having hands. The back banners (Pamitl in Nahuatl, though there are other terms) also are pretty typical for what's seen in Central Mesoamerica, with the circular bucklers/shields and breechclothes also matching, as does the use of Atlatl (though the andeans may have also used Atlatl, i'm not sure). That being said, some of the hairstyles and feather decorations on some of the other warriors and other elements of their entire does seem somewhat Andean. I suspect that the artist was pulling references from a lot of different sources from different Prehispanic cultural regions (Mixing them up is a pretty common mistake, as my comment shows!) I'm also not convinced that the scripts/glyphs seen on the ruins have a Mesoamerican influence. I'm not gonna get too in the weeds on the specifics of Mesoamerican scripts and their differences (some are pictographic, like Mixtec and Aztec/Nahaun, some like Zapotec or Epi-Olmec are more like hieroglpyhs and are logogram based, the Maya script has both a true written language with syallbic characters and a set of logograms), but I don't think any look particularly Mesoamerican to me. If anything i'd say it most resembles the writing seen on the Olmec Cascajal Block, but even that's a stretch and is pretty obscure even by Mesoamerican standards... to me they moreso resemble Egyptian Hieroglyphs, which would also make more sense with the whole cat theme. It is true of course that Jaguars played a major role in Mesoamerican culture and mythology (though I will say the Maya relief you bring up at 6:44 doesn't look like it's pulling from a real piece of Maya art to me). Likewise, the structure seen at 6:53 strikes me more as a Sphinx then it does a Mesoamerican jaguar sculpture, but it's sort of hard to say, and ultimately it's possible that there's a mix of influences: While Oddessy's Sand Kingdom does primarily draw from Mesoamerica and Mexico, I think there's some Egypt in there too, for example. I don't have too much to say or add onto off the top of my head with what you bring up with Naguals (which yeah, gets pretty complicated, I don't blame you for not delving into that too much!) or the Maya Hero Twins (the father-son and sun-moon connections you bring up are fun, and not something I would have thought of), other then had I been helping you, I totally could have supplied you with higher resolution versions of many of the images you use for those and other parts of the video. I'll also say that the were-Jaguar motif you bring up in Olmec art isn't universally agreed to actually depicting were jaguars. This is also a pretty complicated topic and I'd have to go double check stuff to give a complete explanation, but basically we're not entirely sure WHAT the slanted eyes, upturned lips, and fangs seen in those sculptures is supposed to represent, though there are other, more obviously human-jaguar hybrid sculptures as well. It's also possible that the fanged-rain god archetype (The Aztec Tlaloc, Maya Chaac, Mixtec Cocijo, etc) I mentioned earlier in this comment started with those so called Were Jaguar sculptures/masks: Miguel Covarrubias has a series of diagrams cataloging the potential evolution of Rain God Iconography across different Mesoamerican cultures to them. If you do re-release that lost Culture Shock episode, and would want me to make another comment like this giving my thoughts, or even would be interested in remaking the video with me giving input, i'd be happy to help with those, or any other future content you do dealing with Mesoamerican cultural influences!
That was really neat, I had a vague idea of some of the topics you said and also shared some thoughts, but there's also stuff I didn't know about, that was some really cool info. Rad.
BRUH. THANK YOU FOR TALKING ABOUT NAGUALS. THEY ARE LEGIT ONE OF MY FAVORITE STORIES. And their history is CRAZY. And they have their own fricking RELIGION. Before the Spaniards arrived, there were different types Naguals, someone born on the day of the dog, they would take the aspect AND weakness of that animal. There were different Naguals like Dogs, Owls, and Bats. And you were correct when saying that Jaguars were one of the most POWERFUL of them, because they were associated with the first sun; Tezcatlipoca, the obsidian god. And when the Spaniards arrived to South America, they began spreading rumors about Naguals, saying that they made pacts with the Devil to achieve their shape shifting forms and they were all hunted down because the Spaniards feared the Naguals, knowing they would aid their people against the invaders. And now the term; Nagual, is associated with a witch that can shapeshift and drink the blood of humans, but still used as a term of strength within communities. So thank you so much Gaijin for telling us a bit about the Naguals because I believe they deserve more attention since most of their history and stories were wiped out by the Spaniards, so thank you for sharing this with us.
Thanks you for the extra information! I remember reading about meso-american beliefs in a book in highschool and always thought it was sad we don't know much because of Spain.
La ignorancia humana es realmente peligrosa, los españoles no solo destruyeron toda la cultura mesoamericana ademas crearon un racismo hacia aquellos que aun seguian sus costumbres
Goomba, can you do a culture shock video on the Legends of Arceus and the Ainu? It seems pretty obvious, given that the games are set in the Sinnoh of the past, and Sinnoh is based on Hokkaido, of which the Ainu were the first to settle, as well a the protagonist's garb having distinctly Ainu touches, but I'd love to see you go in depth.
Honestly, I'd love to have that old Culture Shock video back. I'm not Central or South American, but it is the video that turned me onto both Game Theory, and to you, as a whole. So... Even if the cultural stuff doesn't resonate with me, as a person... It is what brought me to here.
As a Mexican fan of yours, and also a huge nerd of Mesoamerican cultures and mythology, I would love to see you talk more about this cultures (and I could even help fact check some stuff, wink wink). Also, I believe that I did watch that old mario odyssey video and it was really neat. Keep the great work dude, you inspire me a lot.
This episode was really fun, I didn't even realized that it has been so long since you did a Culture Shock that wasn't about Japan in so long. It also makes the speculations about Bowser's Fury possibly being left over ideas from Mario Odyssey more plausible. Not gonna lie, I didn't miss it and have missed it at the same time. I have enjoyed your current output on videos here as well as your Gaijin Perspective channel. Your Culture Shock vids is how I got into your content before I even new you had your own channel. It's cool that you have been making the type of content that you love to produce and as long as you enjoy making Culture Shock videos again, I'm all for it. Just make sure that it's something you want to do.
I've become ever more fascinated, more obsessed, if I'm being honest, with mesoAmerican civilizations and culture ever since my grandmother passed last year and it struck me how close the old ways of our people are coming to an end. My grandmother's mother was one of the last surviving members of our tribe and kept the old ways alive as much as she could despite the genocide her people faced in her lifetime. And now that both of them are gone, I've felt the need to try and gather more information and history about all native peoples before its all lost to time and we are left with nothing. And videos like this help me keep that fire alive, so I will always welcome them.
I'm sorry for your loss and for the genocide of your culture Just remember that your culture and the memories of your family will always have a place in your heart.
Half of my heritage is South American, please bring the Mario Odyssey Mezo American Culture Shock episode back, for my other half is, you guessed it, Italian.
I would personally really like to see the episode come back. My mom is from Chile and it’s very rare to hear the country referenced in big budget games, especially in a positive light. I was very sad and confused to see the episode gone.
I'm Mexican and Guatemalan, primarily of indigenous descent, and I felt extremely honored by this and your previous culture shock videos that covered my people. The societies in which we live in do not celebrate indigenous culture, rather they want the destruction of it. By covering these cultures I believe you are allowing many Latinos to realize the awesomeness of our history.
I was a bit confused when I saw the non-Japan focused Culture Shock text in the title card. Regardless, I'm happy to see Western influences in Gaijin's content again. The last time I remember Western influences being discussed here was his video on Undertale being localized for Japanese audiences and the Irish/UK roots of the pookas (Toriel and Asgore), the revenants (Sans and Papyrus) and the gorse flowers (yellow flowers from the start) that appear in game.
Good to know the Culture Shock is back, Thank you Gaijin Goomba. And yes, please do bring back that lost Video you mentioned in this one, I, as well as many others, wish to see it, bud. :-)
Two brothers who fought the gods of death and the underworld. So kinda like how Bowser’s kingdom could look like some interpretations of Hell so bowser is the ruler of the underworld and along Boo (a ruler of death) is someone both brothers have fought? Gosh that’s cool. It also reminds me that I want a Luigi game where he saves Daisy from King Boo (though that’s probably only me who’d like that)
For some reason, i think the bell shrine kinda looks like a mix of a mayan building, but also a sphinx, so maybe some connections to egypt? And the amount of cats would also make sense too considering cats being sacred in ancient egypt.
As someone with a hobby-passion on gods and myths, I enjoyed this episode; as someone who enjoys content analyzing influence of things on other things, I enjoy what you bring to the plate for us across the assorted flavors of stuff you do (Which Ninja, Culture Shock, Yokai Hunters, etc)... so I say, bring back the old episode. If you have to, cut a new intro before the old video in order to explain stuff, but yeah... bring it back.
I cant help but also draw parallels to The Road to El Dorado. The two brothers, the gods the idiots pretend to be, the jaguar magical robot, and jaguar mantles the warriors wear
as a guy who has been following you since your days on game theory and been watching this channel for years it is good to see culture shock back and what a whopper of an episode this was I learned at ton and I hope to see even more culture shock in the future and of course you should release that lost episode I'm constantly going through your old stuff and was wondering where it had gone or if I had imagined it anyway keep up the good work buddy I can't wait to to see what else you do cause it is bound to be great!
Could the cat shines also be a reference to the Egyptian goddess Bastet? She is the daughter of Ra the Egyptian sun god, and thus has been associated with the sun. Plus she is depicted with having feline features.
I'm so glad you're doing these videos again. There are always so much fun. And yes I would like to see your old videos up again. The Mario Odyssey one was great.
I'd love the old video to come back. I'm an american born and raised Latino and i don't really know a whole lot about south American culture so any and all videos discussing it are welcome.
If you want to do more Mesoamerican videos especially when it comes to anime, I highly suggest watching Onyx Equinox. It delves into Mayan, Aztec, Zapotec and Olmec mythology and cultures. Its on Crunchyroll, so check it out!
I'd love to see more of your videos!! I didn't realize why I loved Super Mario Odyssey so much until you showed the videos featuring Super Mario Odyssey
Just want to mention that I appreciate and love having Culture Shock back, but I don't think the Inca were or even a part of Mesoamerica. Since the Inca was an empire that ruled throughout nearly the whole western mountain region of South America and it's west coast line. While Mesoamerica is a region that stretches from the bottom half of Mexico to norther Costa Rica. The two regions are pretty separate and different. This video was amazing, pointing out all of the crazy interesting connections that were there with Mario. And yes, I would love to see this long lost episode, please Gaijin!
Could have some Egyptian theming too. -cats were originally domesticated in Egypt. -the cat mask bears a striking resemblance to them cat goddess Bastet. -Lighthouses remind me of the Lighthouse of Alexandria in Egypt. -Sekhmet, lion goddess of fertility as well the suns wrath. Wrath in particular in myths even Ra could not hope to stop her once she got into a killing frenzy, only tricking her into drinking booze that she though was blood caused her to pass out and come to her senses later. -there have been conspiracy theories that somehow there was a trade network that reached from Egypt to Central and South America. Mostly do to pyramids and hieroglyphics, but some tombs had tobacco in them... Or well from a Discovery show i vaguely remember talking about it. True or not its an interesting theory.
Well we might need a video on Pokémon Legends: Arceus as me and many fans suspect this early version of Sinnoh we'll be exploring in the upcoming open-world Pokémon game is based on Hokkaido during the Meiji Restoration Era either before or after the Bosin War to possibly the Early Taisho Era due to elements of the late 1800s to early 1900s that were seen in the trailer.
There was honestly a lot more cultural inspiration in this DLC than I initially thought, it just goes to show that Nintendo really does take an incredible amount of inspiration from different world cultures when designing there games.
I loved that episode please bring this series back! And I remember seeing the lost episode so you do what you want with it^^. Glad I watched it back in the days! It was awesome. Also also more Mayan Myths please :) I love those.
Cats and pyramids... Seems like certain mesoamerican cultures have multiple similarities to a certain other famous culture. I'd be willing to bet that the similarities don't end there (perhaps I should look into each culture's beliefs about the dead). The question is why did these societies develop to have such similar aspects?
I love this video so much! I haven't played Odyssey and Bowsers Fury, so I had no idea that Nintendo was branching out into other cultures, some of those cultures being mine! As a Mexican American, please bring back that lost Culture Shock video, I never got to see this. Also I'm so excited for you to explore more cultures.
I can tell you, neither me or anyone in my family were offended by Sombrero Pancho Mario. Mexican family we are, offended we are not. Glad you are doing another one of these. :d
Another thing about jaguars: while they represented the body, earth, lizards would represent flowing water (rivers, etc.), fertilizing earth. Antient glyphs that combine them both are the earliest depiction of the idea that evolved into Quetzalcoatl.
Saw the lost episode of Culture Shock before it disappeared, and thought it was pretty interesting. Even tried to pass it along to a couple of friends who were trying to show connections between modern media platforms and culture for either educational/teaching criteria or those trying to connect with their kids.
I wish I could see your lost video. My family comes from Mexico and I love seeing nintendo put my culture into the games. :) I actually really miss when Daisy had a tan cause I was proud to see my skin tone be in Mario games
Aww yes the times wear women could tan and it was considered socially acceptable ... good times ..l good times ... but If I were you I would not hold your breath even if they did give daisy back her tan us mexicans would not get to claim her as a representation of us .. the BLACK community would grab her and never let her go and not share regardless if her skin is a light tan ... because apparently any type of skin tone that isn’t pink is theirs and theres alone ... just like how they think braids are only African and were not warn buy the Aztecs ... oh well ... the world is what is now ... tbh its probs better daisy lost her tan as you can still dress up at her and not get yelled at cuz pale people really don’t care if your kid dresses up as one of there characters.... my little sis tried to dress as Tiana for halloween and got yelled at cuz apparently only “black girls” can wear that green dress .. it would be the same with daisy unless they came out saying she was hispanic ...
I'm sorry that happened to you guys. :( I don't know what to say. It happens with us too sometimes when we admire japanese culture. I wish we could all get along but everyone had a different way of showing their love for other cultures and some can be looked upon as insulting unfortunately. :( I try not to take it so hard and learn as I go. That is all we can really do.

7:33
So that's why in Housamo, Tezcatlipoca took form of a winged black jaguar
Honestly, I'd love to have that old Culture Shock video back. I'm not Central or South American, but it is the video that turned me onto both Game Theory, and to you, as a whole. So... Even if the cultural stuff doesn't resonate with me, as a person... It is what brought me to here.
Thank you for bringing back this absolutely amazing gem of a series.
Dude, this is sick. I don’t care about what you post, as long as it helps us learn about the cultures of the world in an entertaining way!
I'm sorry for your loss and for the genocide of your culture
Just remember that your culture and the memories of your family will always have a place in your heart.
I hope you put it back up, maybe updated with new info you make has found after it was put up then taken down “mysteriously”.
8:51 so Basically nagual is a logia user.
Upload the lost episode, I'd love to see it again I wondered where it went
I was a bit confused when I saw the non-Japan focused Culture Shock text in the title card. Regardless, I'm happy to see Western influences in Gaijin's content again. The last time I remember Western influences being discussed here was his video on Undertale being localized for Japanese audiences and the Irish/UK roots of the pookas (Toriel and Asgore), the revenants (Sans and Papyrus) and the gorse flowers (yellow flowers from the start) that appear in game.
Glad to see Culture Shock return. In all honesty, I believe that was the main reason I subscribed back then.
Same here. That was one of the main attractions this channel had.
We want the culture shock Gaijiiiiin videos like urs are always educational and amazing to watch
Good to know the Culture Shock is back, Thank you Gaijin Goomba.
And yes, please do bring back that lost Video you mentioned in this one,
I, as well as many others, wish to see it, bud. :-)
A CULTURE SHOCK!?!?!?!?!?!? WHAT BLACK MAGIC YOU USED TO BRING THIS BACK!?!?!?
Legit glad you brought it back though!
Two brothers who fought the gods of death and the underworld. So kinda like how Bowser’s kingdom could look like some interpretations of Hell so bowser is the ruler of the underworld and along Boo (a ruler of death) is someone both brothers have fought? Gosh that’s cool. It also reminds me that I want a Luigi game where he saves Daisy from King Boo (though that’s probably only me who’d like that)
\[T]/ PRAISE THE SUN 🌞
If only I could be so grossly incandescent! \[T]/
Bring it back! I’d love to learn more about the different cultures of the world through your channel!
I'm curious why you left game theory, but I don't mind, I love your content! Bring back the LOST EPISODE
Bring the video back! I love learning more about my culture through you!
I loved the culture shock videos and am happy they are back
Hey, Mexican here, just want to say that I would love to see the lost culture shook video, love this one aswell, keep the great work
I adore your Culture Shock video's it is what got me into your channel to begin with. Wonderfully done Gaijin!
Don't just upload the lost culture shock episode, jump start the series back again. It was always one of my favs!
I cant help but also draw parallels to The Road to El Dorado. The two brothers, the gods the idiots pretend to be, the jaguar magical robot, and jaguar mantles the warriors wear
Culture Shock is probably one of the most important series on this channel. None of the episodes deserve to be lost.
as a guy who has been following you since your days on game theory and been watching this channel for years it is good to see culture shock back and what a whopper of an episode this was I learned at ton and I hope to see even more culture shock in the future and of course you should release that lost episode I'm constantly going through your old stuff and was wondering where it had gone or if I had imagined it anyway keep up the good work buddy I can't wait to to see what else you do cause it is bound to be great!
Never realized that episode of culture shock was gone. It would be great to have it back.
Im glad that my culture is being mentioned in a culture shock episode but honestly i think it fits the incas more than aztec and mayan myths
Learned a lot from this video! Very cool stuff! I'd love to see your old Odyssey Culture shock return, it was one of my favourites.
Could the cat shines also be a reference to the Egyptian goddess Bastet? She is the daughter of Ra the Egyptian sun god, and thus has been associated with the sun. Plus she is depicted with having feline features.
Yo! I love Culture Shock! Great video man! Bring back the lost one, yes please!
Heck yeah, CS is back!
4:54 That's adorable, you know sometimes humans can be the most adorable creatures.
HERE WE GO!!!!! glad to see the amazing gaijin goomba back!
(I know it was a week, but it felt longer)
If you want to do more Mesoamerican videos especially when it comes to anime, I highly suggest watching Onyx Equinox. It delves into Mayan, Aztec, Zapotec and Olmec mythology and cultures. Its on Crunchyroll, so check it out!
I'd love to see more of your videos!! I didn't realize why I loved Super Mario Odyssey so much until you showed the videos featuring Super Mario Odyssey
I'm glad this series is back, and I'd also like to see the Lost Culture Shock episode.
I seen that when it was first out, and it was great man.
Great episode! Thanks for the vid. It's refreshing to see you cover different cultures.
As a Hispanic and Mexican I honestly love that there is any representation for us, I wouldn't care if it is even racist and stereotypical.
I've missed this series and I'm really happy to see it again!
You brought back Culture Shock?!
....soooooo... there's this game called Indivisible........
I haven't watch your channels for awhile. But damn! I'm really happy that you return to the Culture Shock series. I appreciated it.
Human cloud mind?
I love this video so much! I haven't played Odyssey and Bowsers Fury, so I had no idea that Nintendo was branching out into other cultures, some of those cultures being mine! As a Mexican American, please bring back that lost Culture Shock video, I never got to see this. Also I'm so excited for you to explore more cultures.
Some of this helped me recognize Aztec references in Onyx Equinox. If you want Aztec fantasy...
Glad to see the series back! Can't wait for more content!
I can tell you, neither me or anyone in my family were offended by Sombrero Pancho Mario. Mexican family we are, offended we are not. Glad you are doing another one of these. :d
The King Returns!! Also, please repost the old Culture Shock video, I absolutely loved it.
I would like that lost episode to be restored, though if you have new stuff to add to it, things would get a little more interesting.
Yes bring back to old lost episode
Is really like to see that lost episode, still loving your content Gaijin!
As a Latino I would love you to help expose more people to cultural stories from middle/south american, and Caribbean sources.
Another thing about jaguars: while they represented the body, earth, lizards would represent flowing water (rivers, etc.), fertilizing earth. Antient glyphs that combine them both are the earliest depiction of the idea that evolved into Quetzalcoatl.
Things are about get real fast and fury, It just has me curious.
That Animorphs reference!
How did I never notice the Mesoamerican hieroglyphs in-game until now???
Saw the lost episode of Culture Shock before it disappeared, and thought it was pretty interesting. Even tried to pass it along to a couple of friends who were trying to show connections between modern media platforms and culture for either educational/teaching criteria or those trying to connect with their kids.
Really enjoyed this one. I just played this DLC last night actually and loved it.
CULTURE SHOCK IS BACK BABY!!
Super Saiyan Cat Mario does also remind at a male Lion though in this context, it does seem like the main inspiration was indeed middle America.
