Moved him to another tank to deal with some hair algae and had the same positive result. In both cases he was in planted tanks with nano fish (CPD, tetras) and he paid them no mind whatsoever.
So informative for this newbie setting up my first (and largest ever) aquarium since childhood. These sound like some great options for my 40 gallon breeder!
Hi, Great selections. Currently I'm researching a 40 gallon breeder South Asian biotope. I need to continue researching plants and fish in regards to water parameters. Probably I'll be purchasing the aquarium in the next two to three months. I just trudged back inside after shoveling snow away from my neighbor's and my furnace exhausts. If you have a high efficiency furnace keep your exhaust clear of snow! Stay warm!
I have a 40 breeder with a Tanganyika setup. It has Similis shell dwellers and Transcriptus. They both breed and I have dozens of babies that I'm going to sell to my LFS. I also have another 40 breeder with a hopeful future breeding group of 9 rusty mbuna. There are 3 males and 6 females. They are around 2" now.
I LOVE these suggestion videos. as a new fishkeeper, (with 3 tanks already) these really help me to decide what I might put in my next tank. I am planning a rack system with a 47.7 gal, and 2 21 gal from ultum nature systems. It will be a looker!!!! Currently Ive got a neon tetra school tank 29 gal, an 8.75 gal neocaradinia tank, and a 2.8 gallon cull tank for the neos.
This is SO helpful. Thank you! I will be setting up a 40-55g tank at our office and this info has given me better ideas on how to proceed with stocking.
Still waiting to ind some shellies locally a year later! Great ideas though Jason/Joanna! I have an empty 40 breeder sitting here. You gave me some new ideas! Thank you!
Great vid you two.I appreciate your time and opinions. The stocking options are on point for sure. Keep up the conten,t it is definitely worthy of a giant thumbs up... 👍
Love the pearl gourami. I have kept many different species over the years but only had the peal for about a year. You can actually keep more than 1 unlike some other gouramis. They get along well. Odd thing about mine is they buddy up with my angel fish. They hang out side by side! Cute
Thanks for this video. I've been setting up my 40 gallon for african cichlids (mbuna). I know its the very very minimum space for them but I consider the floor space of the 40 gallon way more important than the height of the 55 gallons. With good filtration. I was wondering about stocking amount so thank you for that.
Happy Monday hopefully your both feeling better! Very hectic day here got up early to drive my niece to her job at a veterinarian clinic in Saratoga ( big mixed winter storm) ,their other office is in Kentucky next to another famous race track. She had to sign a non disclosure so you can picture how prestigious it is to work there and what she is working on until she leaves next fall for Veterinary college.
Loved the video. I have a 40 gal breeder. 1 bolivian ram, 9 ember tetras, 8 cardinal tetras and 6 otos. (Also 6 rummynose tetras getting delivered). I seen your video on congo tetras could i add some of those or would it be over stocked since they need at least 6?
Great video. I just picked up my first 40 breeder to set up for Lake Victoria Cichlid tank. I am looking forward to doing my first scape as well. FYI .... a little technical difficulty with many of your links above, and seem to be missing for some reason.
I’m a new fish keeper and I’m surprised at the possibility of a mbuna community in a 40 gallon breeder. I assumed you needed a bigger tank for something like that. I’ll definitely be doing more research in that department because that tank sounds amazing!!
Excellent video and you have a great channel. I’m curious to know which brands for fishtanks do you recommend. I’ve noticed acrylic tanks cost a lot more and they look great but I’m not looking to spend a lot of money on tanks but I don’t want an inferior brand either. In Petco, I see the main tanks that everyone buys, and I myself have bought them in the past.
So I built a community tank based on this video. So far I have 4 German Blue Rams 1 male and 3 females, 4 peacock gudgeons, 6 platys, 6 marbled hatchet fish, 4 yoyo loaches and 2 angel fish. The coolest part is that my 2 baby angel fish, about the size of a quarter, have really taken to and been excepted by hatchet fish. The angles are very similar in color I would say very close to camouflage colored. They float with their noses up next to the top slightly tilted. In the exact same position as the hatchetfish. They spend almost their whole day floating in the center of the hatchetfish in a tight little cluster. Pretty cute
That Mbuna idea seems really good! But, as I have never played around with a cichlid tank, how would that be for a beginner to cichlids? Would it be too much upkeep? I am going for a setup that I can leave alone if I need to and the fish and water peramiters don't do haywire.
Putting together a 40g breeder. I ultimately would like 2 sets of schooling fish with a centerpiece or two. What do you think about 15 rummynose tetras, 15 harlequin rasboras, 2 Kribensis, and 2 angelfish?
I have several of these species spread across my various tanks. Love all of them. I've had kribs before and they were chill. I recently got 2 but they turned out to be giant kribs. Much bigger and more agressive. Beautiful, but a little crazy.
My 40 breeder is what I consider to be "semi-aggressive". 4 pairs of Golden Wonder Killifish, 8 Buenos Aires Tetra's, an adult Pearl Gourami, a CAE (yeah I know but we love our Goldspot) and about 20 Cory's of various species. The tank has been up for about 3 years and I really don't see any aggression and Goldspot still eats algae at 71/2" and 21/2 years old.
I asked you last week about this lol I said I wanted to get about 5 dwarf gourami for my 40gal. I've 2 rams a lip stick goby and a small group of Cory's. on your advice I got 5 dwarf gourami and I honestly couldn't be happier I love them. although the centre of the tank is a bit bare. so was thinking of a school fish that will stay mid to top of tank. but in open water. was thinking celebs rainbows. but I've no lid
Great job!! 👍 How do you bring home a larger tank like a 40-50+ gallon?? Is it really heavy?? Also why is it called breeder tanks when you don't have to breed fish in it??....
Im a tad late to this video but figured id ask. I have a 40 gallon breeder I'm going to move my comminity of tetras into as well as some corydoras and a male rainbow krib. Would it be a good or bad idea to add another krib? I really enjoy the kribs...He is definitely the boss of the tank.
Thanks for the great video. I’m getting back into the hobby (this time with a 7 and 11 year old daughters) joining me after a 20 year absence from fish keeping. I am currently cycling a 55 gallon non live planted tank. My youngest loves the red and blue dwarf gourami at the local mom and pop fish store and my eldest loves the cardinal tetra and harlequin rasboras. Keeping there choices in mind what else and how many of each would you add to the tank? Are we able to work a centre piece fish into the mix or are the dwarf gourami filling that roll? Really open to suggestions and guidance as I used to keep only ocars previously so the smaller community fish tank experience is new to me. Thanks for all your help and great knowledgeable videos.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics wondering based on there above fish choices how many of each fish would you add and what other fish types and numbers would you recommend? Thank you very much for the help and appreciate your experience and expertise
I’m currently setting up a 40Breeder right now and am really interested in the Mbuna setup. I watched your mbuna video and some others and it seems like the consensus is that I need a minimum of 75 gallons, but I also know about the 40B surface area being perfect for those slightly bigger cichlids. Also the whole aggression thing seems to be split between giving the fish enough space but also overcrowding to lower their aggression. How could I nitpick this to make this work out? I have a fair bit of cichlid experience but they’ve always been solo or a centerpiece amongst smaller tropicals.
My 49G has so much… I got a male apisto Macmasteri, golden white clouds, normal white clouds, black neons, green neons, ember tetras, golden tetras, cherry red tetras, galaxy rasboras, coral red pencils, otos, and lampeyes. Plenty of plants and they’re all cool!!!
Just curious, I really want to keep some kuhli loaches or panda corys... can you keep these fish with an eco complete substrate or is it too rough for them?
I have a 30-gallon with 11 Black Neon Tetras, 10 Black Skirt Tetras, 6 Bronze Corydoras and 1 Ancistrus. I especially like the combination of Black Neons and Black Skirts since they school at different levels. Plus the Black Skirts don't hide as much as they do on their own.
Love the look of these tanks ! I know finnex stingray 2 is your go to light. Is a single light adequate for a low light 40 gallon breeder tank or should I go with two ?
Great vid, thank you. Love Apistogramma, my water comes out of the tap at ph 8.0 and when cycling with plants and wood 7.8 :( Suggestions of non-cichlid, non-guppy/platy, plant friendly community?
Just had a 40 breeder come available. Had a flowerhorn die on me after 7 years. 😢😢😢 I’m sure it was age as why he died. But is there anything I should do to the tank before adding new fish to it? Other than the 90% water change I just did on it.
With the Lake Tanganyika cichlids, you used flagstone stacked, creating caves. What is this space measurement? I have thick slate, and stacked the way you did it, it creates 3/4" space. Is that enough for the lemon cichlids to swim into and use for breeding? (When looking at fish and their needs, only adult length is given, not widest width vertically.) This will be for an elementary school aquarium. Thanks
I been working with a 10 gallon for awhile but now just got myself a 40, question, what amd how much substrate ahould i put into a 40 gallon. I want to put love plants in it as well. I just have fake ones in my little 10 right now, so what would be the best plants to.
Love the cichlid suggestions but I went another route that doesn't seem to get much attention; Lake Victorian cichlids. I've got half a dozen mix of Ruby Green, Nyereiei, and Zebra Obliquidens. I'm already a big fan of Malawi haps but hardly see anyone talking about the cool Victorian haps out there!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics my decision would have been between a breeding pair, a group of four, or a solo (which I currently have in there) with a school of larger tetras. I'm leaning towards the breeding pair. Thanks!
Hi really cool video and just what I was looking for as I've got new 43g and 75gallon tanks, deffinitely want to do some breeding So I really wanted to see if I could do a Leopold's angelfish pair and a apisto pair in the same tank, a substantial cave system so that only the apisto's could get in (was thinking that might give the apistos enough space if the angel's get chasey). still looking around for info and not sure if its really do-able in the 43g but if you could see any major holes then I'd love a shout! if so then molly's/swordtails or the shell/rock dweller Idea you gave will probably be what I go with!
My 40 breeder I initially went with liberty mollies, would recommend that your tank isn't TOO densely planted, had WAAAY too many fry (started with 10 and wound up with approximately 70 in a month, there was little to no cannibalism, and took quite the effort to remove and rehome them all. figure less plant cover and some predatory fish would help reduce the population of fry to a more manageable level if I give them another go.
So I plan to set up a 40 gallon breeder . Been in the hobby for 3 years now. I really want to do this Mbuna set up. Little worried about them killing each other like someone else said happened with his. Any other tips to make this work?
I'm curious about a couple of things. I've seen several videos about angelfish and rams being together. And says it should be fine. So, first question. If I do angelfish, rams, peacock gugeon, Cory cats, and bristlenose in a 40 gallon, is this too much variety? If not, how many of each? Next question. My tank is cycled and ready to put fish in. How many do I start with and how far apart. I don't want to put too many in to quick. So what is a good rule here?
I'm trying a Tanganyikan community with multis, cadopunctatus, and cyprichromis leptosoma. Not sure if I like it because I really enjoyed watching mu multis breed and all the fry. I'm torn on whether I'll keep the tank as is. It's a 55g. I'm going to try to change the scape and move some rocks and shells around and see what happens. My first set up had rocks on one side and shells on the other. The problem is that cados took over the shell area and are harassing all the other fish. We'll see if changing the rocks and shells changes anything. I may end up rehoming the cados and trying the multis and leptosoma and see how that works. I also have a 40g breeder double stand and currently only have 1 40g breeder set up and running. It has my Adoketa ivanacara as the main fish with some dither fish and L494s. I'm thinking about setting up a 2nd 40g breeder and trying to get a breeding group of a more rare mbuna like saulosi, fainzilberi, maybe a fuelleborni maramlade cat breeding group. Something similar to these options.
@PrimeTimeAquatics thank you! This video was so helpful. I had a list of things I wanted but was unsure how to add them as a collective! Thank you again 😊
HI! I have a new 55 gallon I'm setting up. I want 2 pairs of Kribs, and you are saying Florida Flag fish go good with Kribs? So I can get a Yoyo loach, a few corys, and 4 or 5 Flagfish? I will put in 2 caves, one on either side of the tank. Can the fry survive in this tank?
Jason can I put 6 electric blue Acura and 4 super red LYRETAIL swordtails and a green phantom pleco in a 40 breeder , and I’m running a 110 TIDAL filter and I do weekly 50 percent changes Thanks
Love this! I'm upgrading my multi colony from a 20 long to a 33 long. (started with 7 adults but now theres an additional 5 teenagers and like 15 babies). Is this tall enough to put just a few (3 or 4) rock dwelling species that you mentioned? transcriptus and/or calvus? Thanks!
I really want angel fish how many can I keep in a 40 breeder? there will only be angels in it. Is there a certain type/breed of Angelfish that's less aggressive than others?
I am getting ready to setup a 40g breeder and I am considering a African butterflyfish and about 6 to 8 African butterfly cichlid, I am a fairly experienced keeper about 30 years of keeping a 125 with South American cichlid. Do you think this would work? And should I add a bristlenose and a school of cory cats?
I think everything could work but I might do fewer butterfly fish just because that might be too many for the top of the tank? The bristlenose and Cory cats should work fine too!
I have a 40 gallon breeder community tank. My centerpiece fish is 1 angelfish and a pair of bolivian rams. Could i add a pair of german gold rams? I have rocks driftwood and live plants. Just want to make sure i have the space
What abount panda gara . I have a problem, i have a lot of fish that live on the bottom 3 panda gara, 6 corry , 2 mcmasteri, and i want 2 bolivia rams , then i have community tank above . All this is in a 40 gal. Breeder 😊
Now I'm officially a fish breder. One of my holding demasoni released the fry and only 1 survived. Hopefully it increases in size soon. Julidochromis are beautiful fish that remind me of saltwater sand sifting gobies. ( tbh most tanganyikans give me marine fish vibes)
Loved this video concept! So many people struggle with stocking numbers, but this is really clear and concise. Thanks!
Thank you!

I actually plan on setting up my old 40 breeder when I have the space for it, and stocking with my three favorite fish: some platies, a bristlenose, and if there's room, a nice school of black skirts
What I really like about that idea is that the platies will provide lots of bright warm colors while their tankmates offer a nice contrast with their darker, more neutral coloration, just...feels like such a nice combination to me

I would worry about it. Probably just age.
Thanks
I think the space is probably around an inch or so? 3/4 might be enough though. You could always double stack some to give some space that is 1.5"?
I been working with a 10 gallon for awhile but now just got myself a 40, question, what amd how much substrate ahould i put into a 40 gallon. I want to put love plants in it as well. I just have fake ones in my little 10 right now, so what would be the best plants to.
And thanks for all the videos, first time I've commented but I've watched so many from you guys, just find you guys the most helpful.
A couple inches should work. Usually takes around 50-60lbs?
Love the cichlid suggestions but I went another route that doesn't seem to get much attention; Lake Victorian cichlids. I've got half a dozen mix of Ruby Green, Nyereiei, and Zebra Obliquidens. I'm already a big fan of Malawi haps but hardly see anyone talking about the cool Victorian haps out there!
can you make a video on a 40 gallon hexagon ?? or ideas on fish and skaping
How many electric blue acara could you keep together? What if there is breeding happening?
A pair in a 40 is fine. Ideally, if I'm doing a community tank I would only keep one.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics my decision would have been between a breeding pair, a group of four, or a solo (which I currently have in there) with a school of larger tetras. I'm leaning towards the breeding pair. Thanks!
Hi really cool video and just what I was looking for as I've got new 43g and 75gallon tanks, deffinitely want to do some breeding
So I really wanted to see if I could do a Leopold's angelfish pair and a apisto pair in the same tank, a substantial cave system so that only the apisto's could get in (was thinking that might give the apistos enough space if the angel's get chasey). still looking around for info and not sure if its really do-able in the 43g but if you could see any major holes then I'd love a shout!
if so then molly's/swordtails or the shell/rock dweller Idea you gave will probably be what I go with!
Could you mix any tropical fish with African chiclids?
Sure - I have done rainbow fish, giant danios and Congo tetras without issues. Also - larger barbs often work.
Can you do a video on the praecox rainbow and rose line shark? Thanks
So I plan to set up a 40 gallon breeder . Been in the hobby for 3 years now. I really want to do this Mbuna set up. Little worried about them killing each other like someone else said happened with his. Any other tips to make this work?
Keep the least aggressive species - saulosi, yellow labs or rusty cichlids.
What kind of fish is that at the 12:55 Mark?
That was a Celebes rainbow.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics thank you !
what brand 40 gallon breeders do you prefer? Looking for something that's not going to fall apart and leak on me.
I just use the petco ones.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics the Aqueon?
I’m still so new to this world. How many fish total would you put in the 40 gallon breeder if you went with angelfish, corys and tetras?
I would just follow the numbers in the video. That should work.
You have some cool fish!
What category would barbs fall? (Specifically the Snakeskin and cherry barbs)?
Schooling for sure
@PrimeTimeAquatics thank you! This video was so helpful. I had a list of things I wanted but was unsure how to add them as a collective! Thank you again 😊
HI! I have a new 55 gallon I'm setting up. I want 2 pairs of Kribs, and you are saying Florida Flag fish go good with Kribs? So I can get a Yoyo loach, a few corys, and 4 or 5 Flagfish? I will put in 2 caves, one on either side of the tank. Can the fry survive in this tank?
That combo can work
Jason can I put 6 electric blue Acura and 4 super red LYRETAIL swordtails and a green phantom pleco in a 40 breeder ,
and I’m running a 110 TIDAL filter
and I do weekly 50 percent changes
Thanks
It should be ok. You might have to upgrade after a while given the size of the EBA and green phantom when full grown?
Oooo can you guys please do a 60 gallon tank?
Good afternoon I am set up an 40 gallon Breeder tank One thing I am asked which way I go for Filter with Canister and HOB Filter with Community fishes
I prefer HOB - easier to maintain.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Thank you I am been looking at the SeaChem Tidal 55 or 75 for 40 gallons
Thanks!
You can in a 33 long, but you will probably stop seeing offspring.
I really want angel fish how many can I keep in a 40 breeder? there will only be angels in it. Is there a certain type/breed of Angelfish that's less aggressive than others?
I usually only keep one or a pair. More than that and they usually start fighting when they get larger and at breeding age.
what filtration and heater would you recommend for yellow labs in the 40 breeder?
Eheim heaters have worked well for us (200W) and a Seachem tidal 55 HOB filter!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics thank you!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics it is only 1 butterflyfish with several butterfly cichlids
I have a 40 gallon breeder community tank. My centerpiece fish is 1 angelfish and a pair of bolivian rams. Could i add a pair of german gold rams? I have rocks driftwood and live plants. Just want to make sure i have the space
You would probably want to get the temps 82/83? Depending on what other fish you have they may not like that?
@@PrimeTimeAquatics thank you! I have Cory's and cherry barbs and otocinculus and loaches
What abount panda gara . I have a problem, i have a lot of fish that live on the bottom 3 panda gara, 6 corry , 2 mcmasteri, and i want 2 bolivia rams , then i have community tank above . All this is in a 40 gal. Breeder 😊
The rams would work!
I have two 40 breeders, one is a tanganyika set up, the other is a dwarf pea puffer set up.
Woohoo! Congrats!
That is awesome 💚👍😁
We do have a few of the mentioned species watching further into the video.
Could you please do a 30 gallon vid?
We did a 29 gallon that should work :-)
I’ve got some rainbows in a community 46 gallon… do you think I could have a pair or two apistos with them?
I don’t see why not.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics if I do 2 pairs should they be the same species or could I do 2 different
Can this apply to a 46 gallon bowfront?
For sure!
