Just watched 'The Night Comes For Us' and it's pretty good. Not as good as the two 'Raid' films, but def gives you the action fix that the 'Raid' crew knows how to deliver.

This was the first movie that started a mini tradition with me and some friends that involved 3 movies and 3 cigarillos. It's one of the best action movies I've ever seen.
After I had seen this movie I felt the same way I did the first time I first saw a Jackie Chan movie. I felt like I had been lied to my entire life. This is what martial arts movies should be and not only that this is what action movies should be.
So, the director Gareth Evans was a documentary film maker in Indonesia making a film about Pencak Silat, the martial arts style practiced in this movie. Iko Uwais and Yahan Ruhain (along with many of the other performers in the Raid) were at the martial arts school that he was filming at and he thought that Iko had movie star potential. He got his wife (a producer) to wrangle some money together, he put together a script and filmed his first action movie Merantau with Uwais and Ruhain.
@@berryindahouse I don't think he had actually done any other documentaries before the one he was supposed to be making (in fact, I don't know if he actually ever made the documentary and just got sidetracked into making the action film). The only reason I know the backstory was because I was at a film festival (Fantastic Fest) he was at for Merantau and he told the story then.
What makes the final battle so great is the surfaces....nothing but HARD unforgiving concrete floor...no soft real estate. Plus..none of that posturing or dragon stance stuff. Just brutal up close contact...you feel every impact..from feet,arms,elbows..this is high octane fighting..exhausting and stellar. Kudos to the choreographic department. Love your group reaction...very genuine.
Man I really enjoyed this reaction. I LOVE The Raid series and despite it being _sorta kinda known among action movie fans_ it's still super underrated in the mainstream even _when_ it inspired the highly successful John Wick series. The Raid, took the classic camera work of Jackie Chan / Hong Kong action flick combined with the kinetic, in-your-face CQC of Pencak Silat and somehow you get this delicious "brutal, dirty and grounded" fighting sequences where the audience could clearly see the actor's movements.
Nope. Esa Sie and Eka Rahamdia(he was also in the movie but played a less prominent part) was... Mad Dog, Iko Uwais and Gareth Edwards all shared in choreographing the action... which is a distinctly different position.
21:00 fun fact: in indonesia it was named the raid, but sony couldn't get the raid name in the west because copyright clashes with other movie or something. Hence the redemption added for the global audience.

if you are ever wondering, the reason all the cuts are so well paced is because the director works with his choreography crew in pre-pre production to film 'pre-vis' for most of the fight scenes in a mock up set in a hall/dojo and then brings the laptop with the edit on set on the days of shooting. Then all he has to do is film the cut untill it looks close enough to the pre-vis shot and then replace it in the edit.

Weirdly, I just re-watched this as part of a 'inside a tower' trilogy (with Dredd and Game of Death) and boy does it hold up. 'The Raid' is what every action movie should aspire to be.
When they were setting up the Mad Dog vs. The Brothers scene I thought that Mad Dog was going to be impaled on the pipe that sticking out where the crank was that lowered the chain. Instead gets throat slashed by the light tube. Subverting expectations.
This was probably one of the most surreal movies I'd ever seen cuz I'm used to Indo movies being either really cheesy and tropey romance/comedy, shit horror, or gruesomely scary horror. At least, that's the majority of the stuff I see here, either on TV or on cinema posters. Horror, comedy, or romance. I need to rewatch this thing again sometime.
