i do recommend more of jason isbell, 'the elephant', 'cover me up' and 'if we were vampires' are some of the most well written songs of this past decade
I've been a musician for 35+ years. The first time I listened to "Southeastern," I listened straight through and when the needle came up I turned to my buddy and declared it as top of my "top ten stranded on a desert island" records. Jason has been so good, for so damn long. It's amazing.
@@stephen.macleod I got Southeastern the day it came out. Played it through and called my buddy to tell him I just heard one of the greatest records ever recorded.
Jason Isbell (in my opinion) is the best songwriter our generation has. The best and deepest love song I've ever heard is "If We Were Vampires." It's about valuing what time we have with each other. The Austin City Limits performance is great, because you can see him looking at his wife sometimes. He has said it took several tries before he could get through it when he first sang it for her. Go down the Jason Isbell rabbit hole; you won't regret it.
Jason Isbell is phenomenal. Great video. His wife Amanda who plays the instrument in question said "it's a fiddle when you buy it and a violin when you sell it" 😀
Criminally underrated artist, glad you're reacting to him. So many songs! Maybe you'd love these: Elephant - (This is the essential track to listen to...) Traveling Alone Cover Me Up Speed Trap Town Relatively Easy Alabama Pines Basically...anything you choose will work.
He also doesn't mind when people leave. It amazes me how long it takes some of his 'fans' to realize he's not their kind of singer/writer. He just keeps on keepin' on.
Strong recommendation for "If We We're Vampires" next and then "Elephant" by Jason. Two of the most affecting songs you will ever hear. Love your channel btw
Outstanding reaction! I’m so glad the title didn’t stop you. Jason’s social commentary is strong and wrapped in amazing songwriting. Especially from someone born in 1970s Alabama. As a white man, especially with two young sons, it’s imperative to recognize the starting line is not at the point for everyone. I simply love the lyrics, “there is no such thing as someone else’s war” and “we’re all carrying one great burden, sharing one fate”. Sounds like such a simple concept, yet so easy for many to turn a blind eye to. Again, great upload and reaction! Thank you. Side note: Yes, the FIDDLE😉 you hear is Jason’s wife, Amanda Shires. Amanda is fantastic musician, leading an all female band, The High Women. I am a huge softie when it comes to them on stage. Toward the end of this song you hear her play a riff and he answers back on guitar. Watching them do this live on stage is so powerful. It should also be mentioned, Amanda is the one who helped pull him out of a very serious issue with addiction. He got through it, they own their own record label, and upon sobriety on his first solo album Jason won Americana song of the year with “24 Frames”. Much of Jason’s success would not have happened if not for the woman who never approaches the front of the stage live, provides a high/soft voice to back up his, and has been his rock for many years. The little girl with fire in her eyes when he wrote this song, was his them almost 2 year old daughter (with the fitting first name) Mercy Rose Isbell.
@@jefflevesque5316 Oh man, I love that side of him. He can tackle some of the countries most difficult topics but still giggles like school kid at silly stuff. I am all too familiar with the look Amanda gives him sometimes. I have two sons, 9 & 10, they keep me seeing life through somewhat youthful eyes. Being a serious adult 100% of the time is overrated.
Great choice! Anything Jason Isbell is a win! Please take the time either on your channel or in your spare time to dive more into his music. You really can't go wrong.
Violin/fiddle, it's the same instrument. You MUST hear "Elephant", "Cover Me Up", "If We Were Vampires" and on and on and on. Jason Isbell is the Bob Dylan of our time. I also recommend you react to Tyler Childers.
Another thing about Jason Isbell -- he walks the walk, too. Another country artist, a more commercially famous one, did a cover of his "Cover Me Up," and then that artist was caught being racist on video. After that, Isbell donated his proceeds from that cover to the Nashville chapter of NAACP, putting his money where his mouth is. That's the kind of integrity I appreciate -- that's being a real artist.
Funny quote from Jason, “It’s a fiddle when you’re buying it and a violin when you’re selling it”. Unique thing about Amanda is that she plays a 5 string violin. She likes the additional range it provides.
God Bless You for playing this. Thank you Jason Isbell for recovering from addiction and seeing the fire in your little girl’s eyes! You too Amanda Shires, you are a big reason Jason lived to tell this tale. Truly one of the great songwriters. IMAGINE singing this in the South where he’s from. Not that the South is any more racist than the North, if you know about all the Dark Money dudes up here. Rock on, this was a great review, keep it up, you have guts too!!
First time ever heard of them. The man in black Johnny Cash, and Elvis Presley sang for equality back in the old days. Even some of the most famous African American singers talked about the two getting there messages out there to the world...A smart man once said an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind...☮❤🙏 Royce
First song of his that I heard, I thought "how brave is this?" Made me check out a concert podcast. I was hooked. Then I bought Southeastern. Now I own all of the albums and concert tickets for November. Can't wait.
A thought provoking song and this is what art is about. I am an African man living in Africa and I still can relate with the song because its human. Big up yourself Rxyce you are a fool for this one. Lol, its 4am out here.
Great reaction. Jason is a brilliant songwriter and the 400 Unit are awesome. He doesn’t shy away from difficult topics and is honest about his past addictions and his recovery. I don’t think I’ve heard a bad song from him and there’s a lot to choose from.

I've heard a few of Isbell's songs but not this one ... and I'm so glad you reacted to him cause you tend to react to quality and I rarely watch a reaction to a song I haven't yet heard... so gracias 😊
He is not afraid to speak his truths. Rustled a lot of the conservative fan base that think he's gonna be traditional. Best singer songwriter on the face of the earth at the moment. Highly recommend Brandi Carlisle if you like Isbell
We are what we are, none chose none can change it, but we all have a purpose. I choose to treat people the way I want to be treated whether they return the favor or not.
Jason lost a few fans over this song and his politics in general, but like the great man he is, he doesn't give a damn. This one and Hope The High Road really hit hard on that front. Not that he ever does a bad song, but those two really do some work.
This is the song that made me look him up and subsequently buy his albums. This is straight up truth, anyone that has a problem with it is only pissed that someone pulled their head out of the sand for 3 minutes.
What you are doing here also brings people together. The man can not continue to convince us that we are all so different we need to fear and hate those we do not know. What you are doing here is more important than you know. Thank You!

Rogue, it's obvious that you're a highly intelligent woman just from listening to your comments you make in your videos.
