If any of you are not already aware of it Jason is not only one of the best song-writers in America today, he is also one of the best guitarists, check out some of his work with his former band Drive-By Truckers. This man can rock & roll HARD when he wants to

Like you fellas I'm a black man raised in the 80's and 90's who loves hip-hop and r&b. But also love good music no matter the genre. I first heard Jason Isbell watching an episode of Austin City Limits on PBS. So I must hear you brothas review the song that blew my mind... and lead me to dig deeper into this man. Please review Jason Isbell's Austin City Limits video singing "Cover Me Up". He goes IN on that song.

As an almost 70 year old woman, those 40 years have come and gone. But those years I will likely spend alone are very real to me. Just driving down the road listening to Sirius this song came on and shook me to my soul. I love it.

  • @kaydub9508

    Little background here:
The girl singing backup is Jason’s wife Amanda Shires, who also plays violin in the band (she is also a great solo artist who is worthy of a reaction).
So, the other thing is before Jason’s album Southeastern and during his time with the band DriveBy Truckers, Jason was a raging alcoholic! I mean the guy had a big bottle of Jack Daniels on stage at all times. The guy was gonna die. I hung out with him a few times during this period, it was declining pretty rapidly. Checkout the drive by truckers song “goddamn lonely love”. It’s just as brilliant, but you can see he is in a different place......
So, meeting Amanda basically saved his life, he got sober. He basically wrote that Southeastern album to his wife . Checkout the song “cover me up”. It’s amazing

My grandpa passed away in January after being married to my grandma for 68 years. This song had always been one of my favorites, but I couldn't share it with my dad until today because of how perfectly this represented their relationship. My dad called me within 4 minutes of sending the link, and I could that the song had shook him like it shakes me. "You know I could never share that with your grandma, she wouldn't make it through." were his first words.Turns out my parents' 40 year anniversary was last summer and it hit extra hard. Jason Isbell's writing is on another level.

To whomever may find it interesting, 'The 400 Unit' refers to the psychiatric ward of ECM hospital (aka Eliza Coffee Memorial) in Jason Isbell's hometown of Florence, Alabama. It's called the 400 Unit because it is a separate building located on the 400 block of the same street. Whereas, ECM is located on the 200 block. I know because it is also my hometown. Although, to be specific, Jason Isbell is from Greenhill, AL. A small community just outside Florence.

Awesome reaction guys. Love your channel, and so glad you covered Jason Isbell. This is maybe one of the most beautiful - and unexpected from the title - songs ever. I know it's been over a year since this reaction but I encourage you to watch this again, maybe the version from Austin City Limits. I don't care if you record it or not. Watch knowing that the fiddler/violinist/co-vocalist is Amanda Shires, Jason's wife. Watching them perform it together is something special. Cheers!

Thank you guys. You're channel does a great job of showing that we all have way more in common than the media and many of the other channels on UA-cam would like us to believe. And music goes a long way in bringing us all together. I just returned last week from my first trip to Nashville and one of the coolest things I saw and heard, was a young country band playing their version of R Kelly's Ignition on the top floor of Tootsies Orchid Lounge, a legendary country bar.

Greatest love song ever...and yes it makes me cry too. As someone mentioned before, the back-up singer is his wife Amanda Shires. Jason tells the story that when he finished the song, he couldn't even sing it to her without breaking down. It took him several tries. You may also notice in the recording that his voice breaks a little at one point from the emotion of it. His producer talked him into keeping that in the final product. Such good stuff.

I’m so happy you guys did this song, it’s one of my favorites. Next you absolutely need to listen to some Zac Brown Band, they’re considered a country band but they’re capable of anything (just listen to their album Jekyll and Hyde). I would recommend you guys listen to Goodbye In Her Eyes, it’s a very heavy song but you’ll love it.

Hey dudes I noticed you guys are really into groove and rhythm when it comes to rock music. I strongly suggests listening to Kyuss, especially the song "Supa Scoopa and Mighty Scoop". These guys are one of the pioneers of the genre "Desert Rock" (or stoner rock) and are basically the embodiment of groove.

This is such a beautiful song. Great writing and wonderfully sung. And great review!
If you want another song i recommend "Last of my Kind" from the same album, where he deals with social change moving to a big City from his small hometown. Or "Chaos and Clothes" which In which he offers his friend help dealing with his divorce.
That whole Album has many gems i often come back to. "Anxiety" and "White Mans World" (where he tries to deal with how to raise his daughter in a world with many privileges and disadvantages that race, gender or status bring) stand out too.

James Adkisson I agree! I’m sure they will love Roundabout for its genius writing and for the undeniable “groove” it has. Also, I feel like they should give Aqualung a listen, it’s a great song as well! I’d like to see them branch into Molly Hatchet, Skynyrd, Living Colour, or even the Doors; their take on music is so genuine!

Ya know, I've been a fan of Jason's since his first solo album. Many have been fans since his work with Drive By Truckers.
No matter, what we all love about him is that he's our generations Dylan, or simply, he's the greatest songwriter going, and his work is so honest.
When I heard If We Were Vampires, I could've fallen over. It was like my entire life with my wife and kids came to an end, and I had to examine what mattered. That's powerful visualization in storytelling.
Watching you two flip over the lyrics like I know so many of us have has brought a big smile to my face.
Man, at the expense of sounding cheesy, music really is a universal language.
Anyway, keep up the great work as always.
