"Do the dead belive in ghosts" IMHO THE songwriter of his generation. "Over encouraged, only children" points to trying too hard for "success", getting entangled in things one shoulden't - like drugs. "Only Children" is about two childhood friends - one going on to fame, the other going "the wrong way", and eventually dying ("hearse was idling in the parking lot"). And JI has lots of songs, just as good as this one. I've gotten to see Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit 3 times live. All three times was phenomenal...
I went to college in Florence while Jason was still playing in town, unfortunately I missed all of that (one of my biggest regrets), but the mobile street line really hits home with me because I've had a lot of time in the exact same spot where I found myself wondering what the hell I'm doing.
@@Greatmeasures "New South Wales" is pretty incredible songwriting. I must say, I would love to hear my guy play the melody of "If We Were Vampires" on piano.
@@jasonjoseph8424 I don’t know if I can make it happen, but the goal is to get him to do a cover of If We We Were Vampires. I want to get his reaction to it first, though.
This is beautiful. Thank you for sharing. This is the first song by him that immediately clicked with me. I'll have to go back to his other stuff and relisten since it didn't really register with me the first time.
Thanks for the shoutout, Richard! And yes I can play that song very incorrectly 😂 I have to use only my fingers while Isbell uses a pick for the top notes and fingers for the bottom. One day though
Over-encouraged in the sense that they are afraid of nothing and therefore into what they shouldn't be. Thats my take. The piano version was fantastic.
I promise you this is not exaggeration, hes the greatest song writer on planet earth, not including Bob Dylan. I highly recommend diving deep into Jasons music
In this vast world with all different kinds of people in it, you can't fathom that a person hasn't listened to a band member's solo work?? There are many bands I enjoy, but I haven't checked out members' side projects/solo efforts. That's my bad, but it's reality.
@@ijustneedmyself yes, that is correct. I know people that know Jason solo work because it’s later and I don’t know the drive-by truckers songs, but I don’t know any drive-by truckers fans that don’t know any , even one song, but the guy who made really great music with a band that they love. No, the new album is far and away completely different than Jason’s earlier work, so maybe that’s what he meant. Drive-by truckers, lead man Patterson hood has put out three solo albums, and I know a lot of people that know those
Your partner is a little strange. maybe he's a music genius or something. Jason is from Alabama. I'm hitting the like button but the jury is still out.
Jason Isbell is one of the best songwriters around. Thank you for this.

"death wish" is my favorite from them. just can feel the emotion in his voice
Good one! Has follewed JI since his first album with DBT, so I've got lots of favs... 🙂

More Isbell, please! I've enjoyed your metal reactions, this one got me to subscribe. Loved your rendition on the piano.
Thank you! What song should we do next?

@@Greatmeasures for sure, I'm interested in his reaction,. But after he hears that main riff, he's gonna touch them keys...
@@jasonjoseph8424 😂 No doubt about that
Can't believe this album didn't win a Grammy.
It’s no coincidence that this song is very haunting. Jason Isbell will always be one of my favorites.
how I wish I could have harmony live in my head and through my hands like that ..
Love Jason & the 400 Unit.
Every time listening to you guys brings me to experience a whole new journey. Nice musical choice, also this time ✌🏻

I'm a big fan, but almost all of his songs are like that for me. Sometimes the metaphor will hit weeks later.
It's called a traveling chorus. I write that way, too. Why waste an opportunity to add another killer line.

One day, my friend.
Nice! Thanks
Vampires ,Elephant, cover me up, many are better than only children.
Sidenote, I thought dude on the left was going to have a shirt that said Jason Isbell but in metal font
king of Oklahoma
Over encouraged
Is the modern trend of over parenting

Where is the Opeth??
It’s coming. We’re doing Blackwater Park today. We’ll have it uploaded one day this week. 🤘
@Gr8_Measures I'm very excited to see what the Judster makes of Blackwater Park. It's in my top 10 favourite songs and reckon he'll hate it haha
@@bumblefluff79 😂 Maybe not. We’ll find out very soon.
Not heard of Jason Isbell (he's not crossed my radar over here in blighty) but that was pretty enough. Think i preferred the piano rendition after.

I'm not sure I understand the concept here. The big guy tries to find music that the antisocial piano guy likes?
