It's a pleasure watching people discover the music I grew up with. I still get chills when the Staples join in on this classic ballad. Mavis Staples breathes soul into anything that she utters and Levon Helm is so smooth and down to earth, to listen to him sing is like chatting with an old friend. I love seeing you so enamored by such gifted artists. Peace. ✌
I totally agree with you Ron! I've seen The Band in concert (twice in 1970) - both times were amazing and now with the Staples - Mavis, Pops and all are icing on the cake!
I think I am the luckiest guy around. I have seen the Staples. The Band. Janis. Bruce Springsteen early. Hollies. Beatles. Led Zeppelin. The Who. The Cream. Lynyrd Skynyrd. Byrds. Mamas & the Papas. Bob Dylan. Joan Collins. Joni. Crosby Stills Nash and Young. And they are part of the classic wonderful. And more than dozens of other concerts. My father was rich and flew me to concerts. He didn't care for the music but I did. I am old but have seen the best.
I had the great good fortune to hear/see Mavis Staples and her band as the headliners at the Zoo Bar Music Festival (07/19&20/2019), 10 days after her 80th birthday. The woman is a force of nature. Her recent album "We Get By" is most highly recommended.
RIP Robbie. Papa Staples 💪it doesn't get any better. I grew up with this music . Why don't they still make music & songs like this. So much heart, soul & depth.
Rick Danko was the man. Not only a great bass player, he had the best stage moves I have ever seen. It was fun to watch him as well as listen to him, and he could sing too.
I always think that Rick Danko was the special ingredient that made The Band work, but then I think about it some more and can never escape the conclusion that every member was unique and uniquely essential to the group in his own way. They wouldn't have been as great without each and every one.
When Mavis started clapping “Feel like I’m in church!” Good reason for that… While The Band (everyone you saw playing an instrument), was one of the top rock bands on the planet… The Staples were also one of the top gospel acts in the universe!
Of the hundreds of versions of this timeless Robbie Robertson- penned epic this is the most soulful and moving. Martin Scorsese did a wonderful, masterful job of filming this great rendition separately from “ The Last Waltz”.
I recommend you react to The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down from The Band next . Make sure it’s the live version from the concert The Last Waltz. The Band is one of the greatest bands in rock and roll history period.

In late summer 1965, Bob Dylan was looking for a backup band for his first U.S. "electric" tour. Levon and the Hawks were recommended. With Dylan, the Hawks played a series of concerts from September 1965 through May 1966, billed as Bob Dylan and the Band. This is how they got their name.
I remember when I first heard the band early 70's. It was a sound I never heard at that time. I was 15 or 16. I was still living at home. Everyone's already commented where this clip is from and why so I'll not repeat the same. Suffice to say, the film of that final concert is well worth checking out. They released their first album in 1968 and had instant success, managing many hits until they broke up after this final concert.
In Toronto you could see the Hawks on Yonge Street and go around the corner and watch Neil Young, Joni Mitchell or Gordon Lightfoot. There were others just as good but they never left for the States.
The Band - an incredible part of Rock & Roll history. Mavis Staple was a friend of the Beatles. Levon Helm, Robbie Robertson. Check out Somewhere down that crazy river, iconic song.
I loved your reaction to this magic moment in live music history. The Band was drummer/singer Levon Helm (RIP) from Arkansas. The rest of the band were Canadians; Robbie Robertson guitar, Rick Danko (RIP) bass and 4th verse, Richard Manuel (RIP) organ on this & Garth Hudson piano on this. They were Dylan's backing band for several years prior to going on their own. The Staples Singers were Roebuck (Pops) Staples (RIP) and his daughters, Mavis 2nd verse Cleotha & Yvonne (Both RIP) They had their own career and recorded at the legendary Muscle Shoals studio in Alabama. If I had only one song to listen to from here on (I'm an old fart) this would likely be it. Perfect from start to finish. Again, your reaction made my day!
The Band was originally The Hawks, a band put together in Canada by Ronnie Hawkins. They quit him and went to the US where they picked up a singer named Bob Dylan and became The Band. Hawkins had a great ability to recognize and develop talent. He put together another band that left him, picked up a singer named Janis Joplin in California and became the Full Tilt Boogie Band.
Two incredibly talented groups together - and understand that they rehearsed this song for days - DAYS - leading to this final take. Dedicated to perfection.
Mavis Staple the GOAT .... Great cross over Gospel band ~ Check out "I'll Take You There," and "Respect Yourself." Thanks for the outstanding reactions. Oh...In the way of a request.... SADE....Search "SADE Live In San Diego" ...you will not be disappointed..... In particular, "No Ordinary Love." Just outstanding....any serious female artist should study her...closely. Cheers
This from the concert movie called The Last Waltz. The Band decided to breakup and had a farewell concert, inviting their many friends to sing with them over course of concert. The Band was originally the backup musicians for Bob Dylan. The Band decided to write and record songs apart from Dylan and became quite successful on their own.
Actually they were originally the backing band for Ronnie Hawkins, when they were called The Hawks. They’d already been a hard-rocking touring band for 5 years before Dylan hired them to help him go electric.
Oh god god yes this is one of the high points ever. The Band and The Staples Singers had to meet and when they did .. dynamite. At the end Mavis leans into the mike and whispers .. "beautiful" And it was and is and will forever be. Cheers 🍺
Great Reaction. the 50th anniversary of this song was celebrated by a Playing for Change cover, featuring Ringo Starr on drums (Levon Helms RIP) and Robbie Robertson (the original guitarist and songwriter) and dozens of young artists. They do a great job. Worth a look.
This performance of a great song I have enjoyed since it's presentation. Watching your groove, adorned with a beautifully expressive energy and spirit brings me back to time and place that puts joy in my soul. Thank you so much for sharing this invaluable gift you possess. And that smile. Warm and brilliant. This short time spent with you has been a blessing.
Oh yes, I've heard this song before. Quite a lot actually, back in the days. I just never knew who sang it. It's great to see this performance now and meet their faces. And that's exactly why I check out every single one of your reactions! One never knows what one might find, and I've not been disappointed yet. Thank you for taking me along on this journey of yours.
You just became on of my favorite reactors, rarely does someone hear all those details and just get it right in the first listen . You know your stuff.
Greetings from Canada. Loved to see you love it so much. It gladdens my heart to know that the new generation finds this song to be irresistable too. Good on you, R.R.- be safe.
This show, in my opinion, was one of the' greatest concerts ever held in the history of music....period. Please watch the documentary that this performance is in, 'The Last Waltz' produced by Martin Scorcese. It belongs in a Time Capsule for future generations....
You are one of my favorite reactors, you feel the music, and don’t change what you do, I want to listen to you as you go, so I can hear your perspective on what we used to listen to all the time. You make my day better!! Peace, love, and party on!!
Check out the whole "Last Waltz" soundtrack. Some legendary performers in there. Thank you, sweet baby girl, for taking me back to hear it all again through your young people ears. There's so much that has gone before. Thank you for rediscovering it for us. ✌
The Band is like no other and you are in for a fantastic ride learning their catalog!!!👍👌✌ They are just one of many 60-70's bands that will continue to make you feel really good, inspired, amazed, happy, mellow, mesmerized, reflecting... That's what music used to be all about and I'm insanely grateful to have lived through it all!!! Just a few of the epic bands I recommend is Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Rush, Led Zeppelin, The Eagles, The Grateful Dead, Santana, Heart, Yes, Procol Haram, Deep Purple, Cat Stevens, Steely Dan, David Bowie and... The list can go on and on, but nobody on my list will disappoint!!!👍👌 Enjoy the ride✌😁
I love your comparison to a five course meal. Bravo to you for listening to it and bravo to the person who suggested it. 👏👏👏 Be sure to listen to other live performances by The Band.
I absolutely love your reaction videos. You are the most genuine out there. And absolutely stunning - doesn't hurt. This song was absolutely amazing. Thanks
If you've never heard "I'll Take You There" by the Staples Singers, you are in for an epic experience. Nobody can touch Mavis - deep as the ocean and sweet as pie.
It was absolutly beautiful watching this with you. Getting to experience someone hear "the weight" for the first time is amazing. and to watch the version from the last waltz is just magic.
One of the best songs ever written and recorded. Tip of the hat to fellow Canadians Robbie Robertson (guitar), Rick Danko (bass) and Richard Manuel (piano). Massive respect for Levon Helm (drums) and Garth Hudson (organ). The Band.
The Band was the most talented, tightest, and influential group of all time. There are many great songs to check out. These include; The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, (live from The Last Waltz film), Acadian Driftwood, It Makes No Difference, Rockin' Chair, The Rumor, I Shall Be Relased, AND SO MANY MORE....
If her voice doesn’t immediately fill you with an incredible amount of joy something is wrong. Like you said, it’s like a weight being lifted off of you. It really. When you hear this, everything else just falls away. I love it so much. This is THE EXACT THING that I live for.
You are adorable! I enjoy seeing your reactions to some of my favorite music. I feel your genuine reactions to what your hearing. It is lovely and makes my heart happy.
Great reaction, this was a legendary performance from the 1976 film The Last Waltz which was a documentary about The Band's farewell concert in San Francisco at the Cow Palace. The film is loaded with greats including Bob Dylan whom The Band played with over the years. Even Ex Beatles drummer Ringo Starr performed with The Band and Dylan doing his classic I Shall Be Released to close it out. Two more great live so song's from the film are The Night They Drove Dixie Down and Up On Cripple Creek. Those would be nice to see, you won't be disappointed. The Band were legendary performers.
@@Mark-tu5yl Were you there? That would be cool as hell. I wish I'd seen The Band live. I saw The Beatles in Pittsburgh in 64 for my sixth birthday. Best birthday surprise ever !. I also saw Dylan at least a half dozen times. He was a different breed of cat, the most I ever heard him speak was maybe a dozen words all the way down to zero words and live he could be great or he could suck. He just didn't care what the audience thought.
The world truly misses musicians like this, it's music that makes you feel good. Everything today is either too angry, or too loud, or too fast, or too computerized, or auto-turned.
That is a custom made double neck made for Robbie Robertson. Most double necks are a regular 6 string on the bottom and a 12 string above, but this one was special made with a mandolin above. The Band started out as Bob Dylan's original studio backing band. The older, black man and woman are Pops & Mavis Staples.
Levon Helm, the drummer, was a genius. It is a shame how those guys ended up at odds with each other. They were a brief but brilliant flame. Hell, Bob Dylan hung out at their house. The Weight is the best feel good song of all time.
I recommend everyone watch the documentary Muscle Shoals. It's about a man with a vision, a local backup band, and talented singers such as Aretha Franklin making hit after hit after hit. You won't be disappointed.
Those bands from the 60's and 70's were just so talented. Not only did they write the songs, sing and play the instruments, most of them also drove the bus, worked the mixing board, and set up the equipment. No filters, no auto-tune, no second takes, just great artists leaving it all out there on the stage. I love every voice and note in this classic track.
Yes Rxyce, this collaboration was and is legendary. Two incredible bands that together created a masterpiece; especially at a time when people needed to see diversity coming together to do something great, and it was more than great. Beautiful is not a strong enough word for this performance.
Just discovered you responding to a song I love people hearing for the first time and now I love you. You catch so much and just love the music you're being exposed to, so sincere in your responses. So glad you popped up in my feed.
Yes it is a "feel good " song. It has been said that this song "The Weight" transcends space and time, and brings many disparate people and ideas together. There is a movement called playing for change, and they often record songs *played around the world* Their recordings feature singers and musicians around the world all playing the same song "Together" Playing For Change feature Ringo Starr, Robbie Robertson (from The Band - and in the video you react to here) and a ton of others well known and unknown around the world ua-cam.com/video/ph1GU1qQ1zQ/v-deo.html
The Weight (RIP Levon Helm 🙏), and The Staples 🙌. You've got to do a review of The Staples songs "Respect Yourself" and "I'll Take You There" recorded at Muscle Shoals FAME Studios. A lot of great music came out of that studio with artists from Country, Rock, Soul, R&B from the 60s through the 80s...
I'm so glad you were recommended. You are so full of joy and excitement when you react to music it is so much fun to watch. You seem to have such a gentle soul and your reactions are smart and truly heartfelt. Become one of my favorites.
The Band were the white group. The Staple Singers were an American gospel, soul, and R&B singing group. Roebuck "Pops" Staples, the patriarch of the family, formed the group with his children Cleotha, Pervis, and Mavis.
I love your vibe. Your smiles and reactions to good music put off such a bright light and when something deep touches you, it really shines through as well. Absolutely wonderful channel
If you liked this version PLEASE listen to The Weight - Playing for Change. It’s an international melting pot of musicians singing this iconic song. I promise it will move you to tears.
Allow me to say this wasn't their final performance though it was billed as such and they did stop touring for some time. Personally, I saw them in 1994 in Washington DC and though older, they still gave a great performance. I was a little surprised they played 'The Weight' as the third song in the concert. I figured they would leave it as their encore. Shows what I know. When the concert ended and the fans were all yelling for an encore, the house lights came up and that was it. No encore. Still, one of my favorite groups.
Those weren’t the original members….Richard Manuel died in 1986 and Levon Helm refused to show up, because of the bad blood still between him and Robbie Robertson.
A classic song from a very important band in the history of rock and roll. Many genres of music meld together in the songs released by The Band. This is a wonderful rendition of the song, and The Staples brought the sound together. The Band were one of the bands that bridged 60's and 70's rock, folk, country, and blues (with just a pinch of soul sprinkled in) to form an unforgettable sound. This song in particular speaks to me personally. Such a great song lyrically it takes the listener on the journey with them. When I and my old band mates get together and play out, this is one that we always do. Sadly Levon Helm passed away several years ago. Robby Robertson is still going strong and is doing some work with "Playing For A Change".
What a great tune! Loved your appreciation for this classic melding of gospel soul and Americana. I was recently reminded of The Band as I traveled through Arkansas to Mississippi on the Levon Helm Memorial Highway. RIP Levon.
R/R you’ve just had the pleasure and Honor of listening to “The Staples Singers” w/ Mavis Staple and Pops Staple (guitar). A Father and his 3 daughters. “The Band” (that’s their name) w/ Rob Robertson (6 &/12/ string guitar) & Levon Helm (drums). Thnx for the React!….SanJoséBob
@ninja vigilante Canada is on the North American continent, it's America also. What they were doing was definitely Americana, in fact in some ways the story of The Band could be that it was Robbie Robertson telling the story of the US South from working there, living there, and meeting people like Levon Helm's father, a conversation with whom was the inspiration for "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down", a story told in the voice of a Southerner. But it's also Canadian Americana, if you check out Arcadian Driftwood for example. The Staples were a huge influence on The Band, as they've explained. You can see it in the way the harmonies are put together in both bands, an unusual approach where they just sort of drift around, rather than following more usual patterns. For people who thought of The Band as vaguely "country", realizing that maybe their biggest influence, second only to Bob Dylan, was the Staple Singers can help explain why they sounded the way they did. They also did gigs with a lot of blues players like Muddy Waters before they were Bob Dylan's band.
@@ninjavigilante5311 I said it's "America". Canada is in North America. I'm sorry that offends you but it's a fact, it wasn't my decision. It's funny because I know Canadians who are offended when people call the United States "America", because it implies that it's the only country on the continent of North America, as if acting like Canada doesn't exist.
Thank you so much for reacting to this. I love the band and the staples so much. This is one of the truly all time great songs. Having the staples in it makes it absolutely perfect. My favorite version by far. It’s such a shame that this was the end. It was meant to be this way tho. Everything has a reason and if it wasnt the end, the last waltz wouldn’t have been what it was, and it wouldn’t have sounded this perfect. What you’re watching, this song at this specific show is one of the most magical moments in music history. The whole show is, but this song, this is the one. I LOVE getting to see someone like you experience them for the firs time. Thank you so much. I love it

Oh the merciless irony that their premiere vocalist's name was not even mentioned.
This entire album is a classic. One of the best live recordings of all time.
Mavis and Pops Staples are in the Blues hall of fame, Gospel hall of fame, Rock and Roll hall of fame.
A foundational family of American music.
Love this song! Rick Danko’s voice and bass were so unrefined and melodic. Listen to that bass line. Wow!!! He was a treasure!!!

one of those sublime songs that, even on first listen, felt like it had been around forever ~ the Staple Singers simply made it transcendental

They sure did!
First band on the cover of rolling stone.
Actually they were originally the backing band for Ronnie Hawkins, when they were called The Hawks. They’d already been a hard-rocking touring band for 5 years before Dylan hired them to help him go electric.
And filmed by Martin Scorsese!
Originally they backed Ronnie Hawkins in Toronto, Ontario... Canadian, except for Levon who was a great guy
Oh god god yes this is one of the high points ever. The Band and The Staples Singers had to meet and when they did .. dynamite. At the end Mavis leans into the mike and whispers .. "beautiful"
And it was and is and will forever be.
Cheers 🍺
Miss Mavis' "Beautiful" gives me chills every time.
She is the absolute best. I see her every time she's in town.
Great Reaction. the 50th anniversary of this song was celebrated by a Playing for Change cover, featuring Ringo Starr on drums (Levon Helms RIP) and Robbie Robertson (the original guitarist and songwriter) and dozens of young artists. They do a great job. Worth a look.
icons all of them and a truly iconic song. just greatness everywhere ya look
I love how you enjoy yourself so much. Bless your soul. 😁
Thank you for coming along this journey with me. This is only the beginning still. We'll have many new discoveries and fun along the way!
You just became on of my favorite reactors, rarely does someone hear all those details and just get it right in the first listen . You know your stuff.
Such an iconic song in the history of music. And The Staples! Goodness!
How good was that! We all come together with music like that. Pure. Thanks young lady!
If you listen at very end she whispers beautiful.....
Your reactions are Golden !
It's all in your sweet smile and expression as you're feelin it !!
You brighten a day.
Thanks !!!
It's a crime that no one has introduced Millennials to 60s music. Thank you Rogue for opening the door !
Two of my all-time favorite songs AND groups. Never seen this but this is awesome!!! Great collab. Mavis is always a treat to the ears and soul.
I love your comparison to a five course meal. Bravo to you for listening to it and bravo to the person who suggested it.
👏👏👏
Be sure to listen to other live performances by The Band.
Iconic groups (The Band, and The Staples), iconic concert and album (The Last Waltz). And Mavis Staples is a National Treasure!!
That's the Staple Singers singing with the band. The gentleman is Papa Stables
Pops Staples
I absolutely love your reaction videos. You are the most genuine out there. And absolutely stunning - doesn't hurt. This song was absolutely amazing. Thanks
If you've never heard "I'll Take You There" by the Staples Singers, you are in for an epic experience. Nobody can touch Mavis - deep as the ocean and sweet as pie.
It was absolutly beautiful watching this with you. Getting to experience someone hear "the weight" for the first time is amazing. and to watch the version from the last waltz is just magic.
The music back in the sixties and seventies really were two great decades for music
It's so much fun watching you experience the music I've been listening to since forever.
One of the best songs ever written and recorded. Tip of the hat to fellow Canadians Robbie Robertson (guitar), Rick Danko (bass) and Richard Manuel (piano). Massive respect for Levon Helm (drums) and Garth Hudson (organ). The Band.
Truly one of music's amazing combination similar to the Beatles.
Nice to see you enjoy this showcase of the weight, young lady. The most amazing time period for music, and I was lucky to be a part of it.
The Band was the most talented, tightest, and influential group of all time. There are many great songs to check out.
These include; The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, (live from The Last Waltz film), Acadian Driftwood, It Makes No Difference, Rockin' Chair, The Rumor, I Shall Be Relased, AND SO MANY MORE....
holy crap, I smiled from ear to ear through that whole performance. the music i grew up with. thank you for that. you have a very nice way about you.
Check out Playing for Change. Robbie Roberson, Ringo Starr doing The Weight with folks from all over the world. It is fabulous.
That video is one of my all-time favorite things. I listen to it all the time.
It was a fitting tribute tastefully done ( No one can touch the original version though)
Love that
The Playing for Change version is the best version of "The Weight" by *miles*. You simply must hear it!
@@samuellord8576 you're absolutely right. I've heard that version and I love it.
You’re part of the cure, young lady. Please keep doin’ what your doin’. God Bless ✌️🙏😊
Mavis adds so much to an already great song, her voice will be part of American music forever.
The Staples will melt your ears. Mavis Staples can bring me to tears in 2 minutes.
If her voice doesn’t immediately fill you with an incredible amount of joy something is wrong. Like you said, it’s like a weight being lifted off of you. It really. When you hear this, everything else just falls away. I love it so much. This is THE EXACT THING that I live for.
Fantastic colab by great talents! Loved that! Loved seeing you experience this.
That was a great collaboration 👏
You are adorable! I enjoy seeing your reactions to some of my favorite music. I feel your genuine reactions to what your hearing. It is lovely and makes my heart happy.
Fun fact: The scottish band "Nazareth" took their name from the opening lyrics of this song.
Thats a classic... I've been listening to that end playing the drums to it for 40 plus years hehehe;) nice reaction.. beautiful hun:))
Watching your reaction to this(one of my all time top five), really made my night. Thank you Rogue Rxyce 😎
The world truly misses musicians like this, it's music that makes you feel good. Everything today is either too angry, or too loud, or too fast, or too computerized, or auto-turned.
Amen, I'm 61 today's music is shitttt!!!
Glad you felt so good listening to these amazing beautiful souls!
I recommend everyone watch the documentary Muscle Shoals. It's about a man with a vision, a local backup band, and talented singers such as Aretha Franklin making hit after hit after hit. You won't be disappointed.
Yep, watched it a few years ago, quite a story.
There is a movement called playing for change, and they often record songs *played around the world*
Their recordings feature singers and musicians around the world all playing the same song "Together"
Playing For Change feature Ringo Starr, Robbie Robertson (from The Band - and in the video you react to here) and a ton of others well known and unknown around the world
ua-cam.com/video/ph1GU1qQ1zQ/v-deo.html
Great reaction. I love seeing people dive into different genres of music. Very talented and underrated band. New sub. 😃
RIP Levon Helm and Richard Manuel from The Band as well. Brilliant musicians all
I meant Rick Danko too!
Actually, Robbie Robertson is of Mohawk Six Nations ancestry - not to get nitpicky - but it is National Indigenous Day up here in Canada! Cheers...
@@lisannebaumholz5028 That’s so interesting. Happy National Indigenous Day up there!! Cheers! Best wishes from Las Vegas!!
Sister Yvonne (as seen in the video) joined the group when brother Pervis was drafted into the Army.
I love your vibe. Your smiles and reactions to good music put off such a bright light and when something deep touches you, it really shines through as well. Absolutely wonderful channel
I using this song to help me fight depression 😁👍
That's one of my favorite performances ever and watching you enjoy it made me so happy!
Also, The Staples are the world's best backups.
You are awesome, young Lady. I enjoyed your reaction as much as the performance itself.
If you liked this version PLEASE listen to The Weight - Playing for Change. It’s an international melting pot of musicians singing this iconic song. I promise it will move you to tears.
It's just awesome to watch someone reacting to this song who "gets it" and you most certainly are someone who gets it! Thanks for sharing.
You listening to the Staples, you are in church.
Whenever I hear this (with the Staples) I just have to listen twice! Great Reaction!
That mavis staples legendary singer
What a great tune! Loved your appreciation for this classic melding of gospel soul and Americana. I was recently reminded of The Band as I traveled through Arkansas to Mississippi on the Levon Helm Memorial Highway. RIP Levon.
The last waltz I wore this dvd out on Mavis staples and the van Morrison caravan tracks
Not to mention the Emmy Lou Harris, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Eric Clapton and of course the Bob Dylan tracks!
@@billraufmann8918 yup Clapton freshly back from rehab!
And Ronnie Hawkins
Yeah, great Ronnie Hopkins quote “you won’t make much money son but you’ll get more “$&@$&” than Frank Sinatra”
RIP Levon. The Band truely were one of the greats
Another great reaction! ✌️
The Band is called Americana and The Staples are blues. The guitarist is the wrote the song
It's not jus Americana, most of the band are Canadian boys always remember that.
@@Timelagged it's not American wtf.. me being a Canadian myself I'm offended you would think That, we have borders 4 a reason.
@@ninjavigilante5311
I said it's "America". Canada is in North America. I'm sorry that offends you but it's a fact, it wasn't my decision.
It's funny because I know Canadians who are offended when people call the United States "America", because it implies that it's the only country on the continent of North America, as if acting like Canada doesn't exist.
@@Timelagged so what are u saying? Because it says North America it's all American? What about south America? Is that American too? Give me a break
I love it
