ok...this has become one of my favorite anime movies, if not my favorite anime movie. i would protect nishimiya and ishida with my life. aside from the extremely sad depiction of bullying and the beautiful animation, i thought it did a great job at showing what social anxiety and depression is like. it felt almost cathartic to watch this movie and see the characters, especially ishida, come to self-acceptance at the end - i really feel for him and can relate to those feelings of anxiety taking over throughout the movie. i've gotten so many comments from people saying how this movie is pure sadness, and that it is soul-crushing. while i agree there are sad moments (the bullying, suicide attempt, etc.) i honestly felt that after finishing this movie, it was more uplifting than anything. the ending filled me with hope - that things will be okay no matter what hardships come at me. there is a light at the end of the tunnel. and i'm so happy it ended that way. thank you for suggesting this to me, everyone! (also i am sorry (but not really) for the amount of times i say "REALLY?????" in this reaction LMAO that bullying made me furious than anything 😭)
Kawai (the blonde girl) was a passive bully. She'd do things like the singing part, where she started to breath and open her mouth, (which she knew Shoko was watching her) to make Shoko think she was singing, thus getting her in trouble and laughed at. She's also completely only concerned about herself and how she "comes off" to everyone else. With Ueno she at least has the guts to admit that she's terrible. Kawai pretends to be the innocent perfect flower until the end.
wise man thoughts on ueno wanting to be w ishida so bad and be "happy" that she is capable to destroy every person who try to stop that to happen, just like she kinda did w shouko
I'm impressed you stayed fairly composed. I cried again just watching it here. The main moment for me is Nishimiya's apology to Ishida's mother at the hospital. The painful thing is that Nishimiya already believed she was the one ruining everything socially, but the feeling would presumably grow 100 times stronger realising she couldn't even end her own life without almost causing Ishida to lose his (reinforcing the belief that SHE'S the troublemaker). The deep remorse she shows when apologising hits so hard - you wanna just hug her and let her know none of it was her fault. And yeah, the bullying does make the blood boil. I think it highlights the long-lasting affects that bullying and ostracization can have on people, and the role of forgiveness.
To me, it seems that the more one experienced bullying as a kid or feels the guilt of having been a bully, the harder this movie hits. This was one of only two movies to ever make me openly weep (most sad movies/scenes barely affect me), largely because I strongly identified with Ishida's shutting off from others and Nishimiya's habit of blaming herself for everything and hating herself, which happened to me in middle school due to bullying. My mom barely had a reaction because she never went through that kind of stuff and wondered why it's my favorite movie. Everyone has different emotional triggers.
@@EitherProductions Absolutely. I imagine that a person who has any kind of connection to bullying would be unlikely to watch this movie without having some sort of reaction. For myself, I was fortunate in that I made friends quite easily growing up, and I was never really subject to any bullying. I still cry at sad media with little resistance though. I guess raw empathy takes over, and I don't have any unhealthy reservations about crying as a dude or anything like that.
When Nishimiya is cleaining Ishidas desk and they have that fight where she struggles to fight back, her apologizing to Ueno on the ferris wheel, apologizing to Ishidas mom at her feet, and like 5 other times. I probably cried about a dozen times. I cry anytime I think about the movie, I cried watching this again with Alana. This movie is incredible.
To answer the question, yes Kawai was part of it even if a little bit besides not doing anything at 3:26 if you pay attention Kawai actually pretends to start singing to mess with Shoko and you see Shoko look at her. She acts the hero by saying follow me and then plays the Victim to get sympathy Because of her playing victim some people have described her worse then Ueno Kawai's victim BS is more shown in the Manga but it's still present in the movie. Aka when she starts crying when Ishida called her out
I watched some reactions to this movie and it seems like people hardly notice it. All 4 (Ishida, Ueno, Kawai and Shimada) were accomplices in some way.
She's worse than Ueno because Ueno was transparent about her reasons and never tried to pretend. Kawai was a hypocrite and she failed to see Ishida's change and maturity
What I love so much about the story, is how realistic it involves in the word CHANGE, some people change for the better, some change for the worst, some don't ever change and some has you wondering did they change or not? an example is naoka's character we can't really say she's changed or not, just like in real life
Naoka definitely was starting to show a softer side to her personality, in the manga it's more clear, she doesn't like her mean side and does want to change, but change doesn't happen overnight.
bad or not, atleast she was real, unlike that blondie, she personally makes me sick,i still just can't acccept her,i always get that eerie feeling from people like her, faking their real self for the so called self proclamation
She has started to change, judging by her interaction with Nishimiya at the end. The person who we don't know has changed is Kawai. Kawai is much worse than Naoka believe it or not.
One of the most frustratingly realistic parts of the bullying scenes is that there's a lot of subtext there that Shoya already liked Shoko back then but was basically lashing out because he was immature and the peer pressure. You even see him looking at his hands and thinking about when the sign language teacher comes in until Ueno starts complaining.
He might’ve been interested in Shoko as an idea, but I think he cared more about his other friends because he kept trying to please them instead of just letting it go. It’s not like it matters tho. He was too young to know what he was really doing anyway.
@@beyondviolet oh for sure, but for example when he starts raising his hand before the teacher is like "stand up, i know it was you!" he obviously felt bad once he was able to place an actual consequence to his actions. unfortunately for kids its easy for them to think "oh well everyone else is laughing and nobody said it was wrong so this must be fine to do"
27:11 just to clarify what those figures mean, they have a symbolical meaning. Shoko wanted to give the Man she loves a present, and what do you gift Your Loved ones normally ? Right, flowers, but she was too shy to give them to him, so she Took those figures instead, which should represent real flowers, and i think that is adorable as hell
NO ONE caught that she actually tricked Shoko to use her untrained voice, and got her to trust her as the first part of the bullying. Me neither on the first watch, its crazy.
If we're talking about trash tier friends, Kawai is at the bottom, below Ueno. That's because Ueno is fully aware of everything, but also decides to change, even though her stubborn and passionate personality makes it difficult. Ueno is a awkward girl who is both passionate and stubborn. You can see that there are signs that she likes Ishida, and will go along with anything he does; when he was nice to Shoko, so was she, as he started to bully her, so did she. RE: The Day at the Park - She was hoping to reconcile Ishida with Shimada, because she felt responsible for being the first person the trash teacher picked to reveal Ishida's bullying, and how that opened the floodgate for everyone to scapegoat and destroy Ishida. Shimada also feels a lot of shame and doesn't feel worthy of any reconciliation; out of consideration for Ishida (and himself, of course) he doesn't dare approach Ishida, even though it's obvious Ueno is still in touch with him and has talked to him about reconciling with Ishida. Ueno projects her own self-hate onto Shoko, because she was the catalyst of Ishida's eventual ostracization and bullying. Kawai, on the other hand, was always a by-stander, had never told people to stop the bullying and is always the "good person" every Japanese person thinks of themselves. Keep out of trouble, stay out of people's business, but abscond all responsibility. Kawaii is the only character that DOESN'T evolve and change. She is the scathing commentary on Japanese culture and its tolerance for many dysfunctional things, such as women's rights, and bullying. using tears to deflect criticism, causing trouble by revealing Ishida's past to his new friends. To absolve her guilt, she thinks of buying her way out with the cranes. It ios the easy way out, as opposed to Ueno, who even begins to learn sign language. The whole movie is all about how bullying is a communal crime and how everyone can be victims of it, even as the bully, or bystander.
When I first watched A Silent Voice I was confused as to wether Kawai was a good or bad person but she always annoyed me. I could tell she was trying to be overly cutesy/innocent but I didn’t think it was that deep, I thought it was just an anime trope. Good to know, thanks
To me, she’s not worst than naoka but practically as bad naoka but in a different way. Naoka shows her toxic personality which makes people see that she’s a terrible person and does not want to get along with her. On the other hand, Kawaii does a good job hiding her flaws from people that makes her look innocent but the good thing is kawaii also seems to comfort people that she sees get hurt which makes them feel better. Basically they both are pretty much have annoying and unlikable traits but i wouldn’t say kawaii is worse than naoko tho.😅
my little sister’s teacher made her watch this in 6th grade after there was an incident at the school were a kid committed suicide from bullying. She said that even though she never participated in any bullying, this changed her outlook on life and others and her class bully changed for the better too because she became friends with the boy she picked on everyday. This movie is very powerful and I honestly think every school should consider showing this film
It's really cool that this movie moved someone that young and actually made some impact. Me in 6th grade may be too dumb and insensitive to really understand this movie haha. Thanks for sharing.
I'm gladdened to hear a teacher used this movie to educate her students. It should be required viewing in every school, and not just after a tragic incident.
@@RedK5 Self-love is not the same as love. It's about not seeing yourself as unworthy to live. It's different than love, which usually refers to romance, which is fine and all, but this goes much deeper. It's a story of how to stop rejecting your own soul, yourself. It's about accepting yourself for who you are, regardless of many, many of your faults about yourself that deep down you know all too well, and to be able to live guilt-free regardless and keep going strong, it's immensely powerful message and it's only fair to emphasize it as such and to separate it as opposed to just 'love' which may potentially even go into the box of 'cheesy teen romance' or what not. This movie is much more and deserves not to accidentally be dismissed as so. Tl;dr so, no, it's not about love, it's about self-acceptance.
For those who didn't catch why he thought she said moon. In Japanese, the word for like/love is "suki" and the word for moon is "tsuki". They sound similar so that's why he thought she said moon. At that point he probably didn't expect her to actually like him after he was so mean to her.
As heartbreaking the bridge scene was, all Ishida said was true. He was right about everyone and I think it's nice that he finally stopped owning everyone's shit.
As harsh as that moment was, putting everyone down and temporarily destroying all the relationships in the "friend group", that moment was the catalyst of everyone's evolution. That scene planted the seed of guilt in everyone(except Kawaii, I despise her with passion), and eventualy, quicker or slower, depending on the person, they started realising the gravity of their behaviour and started to change.
when I finished this movie I cried a lot (also while watching) and then I saw someone commented on this movie on some site that "It's not a movie about forgiveness it's about self acceptance" and I completely felt what he meant P.s.: still not over the fact that this didn't won the Oscar that year baby boss (or Shaun the sheep) movie did I mean dude... A silent voice is god tier
This movie and the manga is an absolutely beautiful humanizing and deeply relatable story that was spun. One of the best empathy jumps starts I have personally seen, this film made me fall in love with anime all over again.
I’ve said this before on other A Silent Voice videos, but Shoya is almost a reflection of what I did and had to deal with in my childhood. This movie helped me realize that I can move forward and that the friends I do have truly do care about me. I was at my lowest when watching it, but it helped me know that I wasn’t alone and that I can forgive myself. This is by far my favorite movie of all time just because it’s the only movie that truly changed my life completely. Everytime I see that ending I just lose it and bawl my eyes out. If any of you believe that you aren’t deserving of love, please know that you are loved by someone and that you can change or have changed for the better. It may seem like there’s no light at the end of the tunnel, but you’re just turned around from it. You can find your way, just have faith in yourself to keep one foot in front of the other.
Yeah! I don't believe in bad characters, but he was written to be just a little sh*tty as*hole. He laughed at Shinomiya having troubles reading while covering his face with his hand. Edit: I meant nishimiya, I'll leave the error there because I like to laugh at myself.
@@Yairnardelli He saw Shoko as an inconvenience he didn't want to deal with, and didn't spare any effort whatsoever to help her fit in. His attitude rubbed off on all the kids, including Shoko herself. When the bullying got severe enough that the principal had to step in, he used Ishida as a convenient scapegoat so that he wouldn't get in trouble for doing literally nothing to stop it
@@Keladinus Yeah, he didn't help Shoko at all with her already self-blaming attitude after her father left them because "The mother pretended she wasn't deaf". That guy sucked
I still cry every time I watch it, I really relate to this movie. I'd take Ueno any day rather than Kawai. Ueno is real. She likes Ishida and she felt bad for turning against him when things went south during their elementary days, this can be seen in the Ferris wheel scene although she tried to put the blame on Nishimiya. She was also trying to help Nishimiya at first but she turned on her too because it was kind of getting hard for her. She was getting protective over Ishida especially on the bridge. She wants him to reconcile with his old friends and she also is jealous of Nishimiya. Later on, she acknowledges her mistakes. she stayed true to herself and she was willing to learn sign language. Unlike Kawai who did bully Nishimiya and acts like the victim every time a problem comes. She laughed at Nishimiya, she tricked her into sining early then act all good by trying to "correct" her when she was the reason Nishimiya sang early in the first place. Kawai didn't even apologize for what she did, instead she acts like she did nothing. Man I hate people like her. Ueno I can deal with but Kawai is just a different type of bs. The classroom scene where she singled out Ishida really ticked me off like she didn't bully Nishimiya too.
Doesn't matter how many times I watch this, or watch people react to it, it gets me every time. Such a beautiful movie. Thank you for sharing it with us.
It feels hard to summarize all my feelings about this movie, but it's just such a wonderful portrayal of bullying, and how people can grow up to become kinder and more accepting with time.
I was also a victim of bullying during my school and teenage years.. It was a very tough years of my life that almost affect my personality and my mental health that still haunts me up to this day.. that's why I have a social anxiety and a very low self-esteem. everytime my co-workers invited me to a party or any social gathering, I always reject them cause I always think that they would make fun of me.. So I can relate to this movie that's really about bullying and the effects of it to the victim.. When I watch it, it burst me out of tears cause the effects of bullying still haunting me.. even I'm 30yrs of age, my past still haunts me. I even attempt to end my own life because of suffering but it ended nothing..
I hope youre doing well. I dont know if youre a religious person, but the Church has been the only place where i feel accepted and safe. It is everything to me, as well as my faith. I hope you can find something similar as well.
@@AthanaSus Which church?? Because y'know, there's ones where they say if you're gay and trans you're gonna burn, or the priests m0lest children and instead of y'know, kicking them out or ARRESTING THEM, they just send them to new churches to harm more children. Let's not forget the priest who said "it's okay to m0lest little boys, just not girls". You gotta at LEAST warn people of these horrid things before you recommend it as a "safe space". Church can be literally one of the most dangerous places for some people, and kids obviously.
I was bullied too, at the end of elementary school, but I finally realized that either I would face such situations, or I would be an eternal coward, even thinking about suicide. At the end of my last school year one of the boys who was harassing me came to make fun of me, I retorted making him feel ashamed, his own peers laughed at him, he came up and we got into the fight. There the bullying ended, because in any similar situation, losing or winning the fight, I would do the same, and the boys saw it in my eyes. Some even tried to be my friends after the occasion. If you don't confront your fears, there will be no rest. I hope you get over yours.
Saw this for the first time 2 nights ago. This movie broke me. As someone thats been bullied heavily in Middle School and now at 27 still getting over a lot of that, this film was incredible at depicting depression, anxiety and actually showing what that can do to a person. This movie is absolutely among my top 3 animated films. Might even bein in my top 5 movies of all time. Such a heartbreaking, sad and triumphant story. The ending never fails to send chills down my spine. The boi actually did it.
This movie is one of my favorites. I watched it for the first time last year with my little sister. I’m almost done with college, and she was in 8th grade, but bc I was off at college most of the time and she lived with our mother (our parents are divorced) I hadn’t seen her much in a few years. We had been super close before our parents separated, as best of friends as 2 kids 10 years apart in age could be. Watching this with her, and seeing her watch it, and talk about it, and about how she was going through some of the same feelings really destroyed me, and made me feel like a failure of an older brother, but it also helped me reconnect with her in a way I didn’t think was possible anymore. It makes you realize the small moments, like sitting and watching a random anime movie with your sister, are really the big moments. I think this movie not only saved my sister, but it helped save me in ways I never would have expected. Truly a work of art.
My favorite moment is definitely the ending. It's already so difficult letting go of everything that you've made yourself believe in for the longest time but to pair it with everything else that Ishida experienced. This was truly such a heartwarming scene and just the way they did it really. I cried like a baby during that scene! Plus the parallels between Shoko and Shoya is so profound, down to the very minute actions, they have something in common. Great reaction like always, Alana!
People do get better. This movie hits due to my history with being on the receiving end of torment from bullies from 6th grade to high school from kids and teachers. It takes a long time to forgive. It's important to reach it for people to heal. But along the way, as many of the participants got older, they matured and tried to atone. One even telling me they had a substance abuse problem, and they took their anger in the world out on me. I forgave him the moment he asked for it. This is just an amazing reminder that as long as we draw breath, we can be better for ourselves, and those around us.
I have watched this movie so many times that i don't have to read the subtitles anymore. But everytime i watch it, i cry and fall in love with it more and more.
The X on the faces is something that hits close to me, when you are hated/bullied/betrayed by so many you dont put effort into remembering faces and this applies to people you never met because you think they will just hurt you too, your memory becomes a blur as to what they looked like. You really only remember the faces of people who you enjoyed being with or people who were kind, anyone else repels you because you assume the worst and your fear takes over. Great visual representation of that feeling in this movie.
The scene where Nishimiya Apologise to Ishida's mother grabbing her feer breaks me everytime. The pain in her unclear voice is so deep. To imagine what she has gone through in her life for her disability & can't even take her own life without harming others. Makes you wanna hug her & say none of it is actually her fault.
This movie hits so hard because it's so relatable and realistic. Hurting others, experiencing shame and regret for it, and learning to live with and forgive your own mistakes is something all people experience as they grow into adulthood. We see bits of ourselves in most or all the characters which really increases the audiences empathy for them.
The moment you realize this is not a story about a guy falling in love with a girl, but about a guy learning to love himself again changes your whole perspective. An extremely emotional journey that one man takes simply to arrive at an apology is beautiful
I'm so glad you reacted to this! When you watched "Your Name", I was hoping you'd watch this next. I read the manga for Silent Voice, and watched film in Japanese and English. Such a great story of forgiveness and redemption.
If you ever get the time, Read the Manga. It Really fleshes out the bullying part, everyone was culpable. And it dives way deeper into Ishida's social anxiety & not knowing how to act because of it.
I caught this movie when I was still dealing with some dark depression, but was thankfully on my way out and getting better. It hit me emotionally like a truck and I SCREAMED at the screen when Shoko was going to jump. Thankful for the happy ending and it was very cathartic afterwards. I also agree that the major theme was about forgiveness both for others and probably even more so for yourself. We are all such flawed human beings and we def need each other to get through everything and be happy. Really enjoyed your reactions! Thank you!
Really enjoyed the reaction :) Imagine watching shows like this that would keep me bawling at the end. Anohana is also a good one that made me cry for hours after
He's realization always makes my eyes teary , mostly the last part when he realized people around him is the exact opposite of what he's thinking about them, acceptance and forgiveness is really a important parts of life
Long have i waited! Your reactions did not disappoint ❤ I recommend rewatching this movie with the intent on observing Maria. She's such a bundle of joy!
I think Ueno is one of the most interesting characters in the movie. She is a perfect contra mirror to Kawai, and most people don't like her on their first watch. But the more you rewatch the movie, you realice that she never lies. She is absolutely, brutaly, honest. That's for example why she doesn't judge Shoja alone for the past, and instead says they are all equaly to blame. She was also the first one to try "open up" to Shoko by helping her out with notes in class, which in return lead to her own grades suffering, which is probably why she judges Shoko so hard for never trying to open up herselfe (sticking to the note book instead of trying to practice talking, hidding behind smiles and "I'm sorrys" instead of showing how she really feels, etc.) Uenos brutal honesty is what makes her the exact oposite of Kawai, who is all about lies and trying to seem inosent. Kawai even lies to herselfe by claiming she was completely inosent back than, completely denying that she laughed along, watched and covered for the others. The oposite of Ueno, who does put a lot of blame on Shoko for beeing the catalist/starting point, but also realices that she herselfe is to blame as well for everything ending up the way it did. Kawai deflects blame and acountability, while Ueno accepts it and thinks they are all to blame. I think someone could probably write an entire character study about Kawai and Ueno beeing oposites! xD Hell, even their color paletes are basically oposites! Kawai has light hair and eyes, while Ueno has dark hair and eyes!
Thats all true, also regarding the manga. Ueno is the only person who reacts to Shoya like to any other person. She is jealous to her and she shows that. Shoko is her enemy in love and she shows that. She is honest. I am pity for her.
It was so sad to see Nishimiya's perspective of how she blamed herself as well as Ishido's perspective of betrayal and guilt. They both felt like living was difficult because they were the root of problems. It's so heartbreaking. And then the ending is so heartwarming.
You did so well keeping it together because I remember balling at like every turn watching it the first time LOL it’s so rough to watch but it is one of my favorite anime films of all time
God I really can’t watch this without crying, even a reaction video. Especially the scene where Shoko is asking for forgiveness, but also the scenes leading up to the fireworks. Seeing Ishida laughing too hard at a movie, constantly suggesting plans, always smiling and stuff…it doesn’t explicitly say it, but I’m pretty sure I know that feeling well. If anyone you know is struggling with mental health, and they suddenly start being really cheerful and upbeat out of nowhere, then keep a close eye on them. It might be a sign that they’re planning to do something. That feeling of resolve, of finally deciding to take action can be intoxicating and powerful. If you see that, do Not let this person out of your sight if you can avoid it. Ask them tough questions, and get them help.
i like this movie to me it represents the world behind your thoughts its not just you there are other people. As someone who was a victim of severe bullying i think everybody deserves a second chance if they want to change. I relate to the struggles i really like this movie a lot im glad you reacted to it i looked forward to this reaction anyways have a great day and keep up the great work. SORRY FOR BROKEN ENGLISH BTW :)
Jesus, I've seen this movie dozens of times and yet every single time without fail, the MOMENT that the camera pins out on the festival and the music swells, my eyes start burning and I tear up like hell. Amazing moment, amazing execution
47:47 I love this tiny detail because it shows how well made the world building this movie is. She's, what, two? Their mom had to try to explain what happen to Ishida but she still porosity didn't fully understand and thought he was dead
I loved you reaction. Absolutely loved it. It's one of those anime films that stay with you for a few days. You start reflecting on how many people you might have scarred when you were at school, and what would you do to apologize. Or if you were the victim, would you have forgiven them? As for your next adventure, I only have two words: Violet Evergarden
It's completely normal, I think, that one gets much more emotional when talking about a story, than when watching it. I can't even talk in any detail about 'Grave of the Fireflies', another anime masterpiece, without choking up completely. I watched it twice (I wanted to show it to someone) and boy was it much harder the second time. But it's a must-watch. Two older series I would recommend are 'Aria' (all 3 seasons), a healing slice of life anime with outstanding music. And Tokyo Magnitude 8, the story of two siblings after an earthquake.
6:40 they pull out the left hearing aid and her ear starts to bleed. 25:45 Her right hearing aid gets pulled out and its mentioned that she now only has one (implying that she now has 100% hearing loss in left ear because of the 1st incident) There are so many small details like this though out the movie that I didn't catch on my 1st watch.
The part that always puts tears in my eyes is the scene where his mother burns the money. Something about her making him say the whole thing out loud brings something out of me.
52:18 this OST “lit” i kid you not I was obsessed with this for 2 whole months . id open it up on UA-cam music and had the 10 hour version on loop throughout the whole day for 2 months. the feeling I felt when watching the movie was relived after hearing the OST again. what a beautiful movie
This movie broke me in so many ways, one of my all time favorites that not only is beautiful and emotional, but also imparts valuable and thought provoking life lessons.
Alana, this movie is very impactful 😢 bringing up awareness on how important is forgiveness and to be aware that someone can be living in hell without us knowing, thank you and virtual hugs to you.
Tragic this movie was made at Kyoto Animation which was the subject of being destroyed by an arsonist in 2019. Several people died in there and the culprit was arrested and charged. The building was lost as a result. Nowadays, they have since rebuilt and relocated elsewhere.
that last scene when all the masks fall, and he feels that he can finally be free from the burden he has been carrying all his life, all the regrets even tho they still live with him, he finally gave himself a second chance, a second chance to live, to be accepted, be loved and to be happy. its such a strong scene, in many many ways, the music made it even better, i can't watch this without getting emotional, its a mix of so many feelings together. i've watched a reaction by a therapist, where he says: depression doesnt go away, it doesnt lift for some people, but there is a capacity to feel, there is a capacity to experience joy, the cure for many things is connection, and we may think that no one wants to connect with me, but we just need to find the right people. i think this sums up everything ishida felts during the movie, thats why the last scene hits so hard, the weight of that burden, of all the feelings, of all that depression, was too heavy, and to feel at least for that momment, lighter, to feel that he was able to connect with people that loves him again...was a beautiful composition, probably one of the most beautiful scenes from all animes that i've watch (and i watched more then a thousand animes in general). loved your reaction, i was drawn to your channel with the your name reaction on my recommendation list after i was looking for the song from that movie (which i love btw), thanks for showing me this movie again, i get emotional, but it's really beautiful, a work of art if i may say. cheers from Brazil!
Glad you liked the movie!! This studio and director always do really amazing work! There’s actually a super underrated series by the same studio/director called Hibike! Euphonium which I think you might like too.
I don't know if you'll reading the manga but there are so many details that make you to understand some things, for example de fact that at the beginning Ishida's mom was injured when they went to apologize to Shoko's mom, the part of the Chizuru's dream when Shoko came after school crying and telling her she wants to die... Always rewatching the movie after knowing that, it crushed my heart
One of the very few movies I've ever seen that have a real chance of changing you after you've watched it. It's my personal favorite anime movie ever made.
My friend played the voice of Ishida and I can't listen to him cry without crying too. I called him after I first saw the film to ask if he was okay and he laughed at me hahaha
It's a movie that many can identify themselves in, not for the bullying (well, not for me), but for the other things, like anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts or reedemption. The way he fights against his past to try to not only have her as a friend but to make a change to himself. It's like the motto of the movie says: "Sometimes, all you need is to learn to listen". It's a strong phrase that describes well all of this, since sometimes we just need to see better what the other is going through, try to understand what it is like to be them, so that only then, we can trully understand what we have done to them and finally make a change. You seem like a really smart person, you got most of the messages and signs on your first watch. I had to watch it more than once to understand some things, lol.
Alana, I am always soothed by your compassion and gentle words, you really add to the content you are reacting to. I believe the hardest part of overcoming the effects of bullying is just forgiving yourself and overcoming the hatred towards others that you keep brewing inside. It makes it really hard to trust others, and harder still to trust your own judgements.
There's a reason I tried to avoid watch this movie again, and it's because it breaks me sooooo hard. There's a lot of things I can relate to some characters, the bullying and closing yourself to the rest of the world, the anxiety, there's a lot and it's really hard when you're young... That ending always makes me cry a lot...
i really hate to say stuff like this, but it's lovely to read the manga after watching the movie and seeing all the stuff they couldn't fit in, like the extended ending 🥰
A Silen Voice.. a Movie that speaks to me in so many ways, but also helped me in many ways. For me it will always be, because of this reasons my fav Movie. Alot of Problems these Kids have, i have myself or had myself. Its just a wonderful movie and as stupid as it might sound, it teached me some self-acceptance that i dont have for the most part. Thank you for watching it! (Now i will watch the rest haha, wanted to comment first.)
Every reaction I see of this film I just have to say this is right up there for me with "I Want To Eat Your Pancreas" and "Ride Your Wave". I just love the film 😥😢
this is without a doubt the best movie i ever saw in my life! i saw it maybe 12 or 15 times and i cry like a baby each time! this is a movie every teenagers should watch.
This is my favorite Animated movie of all time, even though i cant watch it without crying the lesson behind it is a powerful one, i also feel like we cant talk about this movie without talking about the tragedy that happened to the studio and animators, RIP to those beautiful souls 🙏🏻
ok...this has become one of my favorite anime movies, if not my favorite anime movie. i would protect nishimiya and ishida with my life.
aside from the extremely sad depiction of bullying and the beautiful animation, i thought it did a great job at showing what social anxiety and depression is like. it felt almost cathartic to watch this movie and see the characters, especially ishida, come to self-acceptance at the end - i really feel for him and can relate to those feelings of anxiety taking over throughout the movie.
i've gotten so many comments from people saying how this movie is pure sadness, and that it is soul-crushing. while i agree there are sad moments (the bullying, suicide attempt, etc.) i honestly felt that after finishing this movie, it was more uplifting than anything. the ending filled me with hope - that things will be okay no matter what hardships come at me. there is a light at the end of the tunnel. and i'm so happy it ended that way. thank you for suggesting this to me, everyone!
(also i am sorry (but not really) for the amount of times i say "REALLY?????" in this reaction LMAO that bullying made me furious than anything 😭)
First..... waiting so long for this movie
OMG yay i have been hoping that you would react to this!!!
So glad you reacted to this movie

Kawai (the blonde girl) was a passive bully. She'd do things like the singing part, where she started to breath and open her mouth, (which she knew Shoko was watching her) to make Shoko think she was singing, thus getting her in trouble and laughed at. She's also completely only concerned about herself and how she "comes off" to everyone else. With Ueno she at least has the guts to admit that she's terrible. Kawai pretends to be the innocent perfect flower until the end.
Yes absolutely, she's such a hypocrite
The attitude, not as kawaii as her name
She's a hypocrite
facts
wise man thoughts on ueno wanting to be w ishida so bad and be "happy" that she is capable to destroy every person who try to stop that to happen, just like she kinda did w shouko

That part gets me EVERY TIME ISTG AND I ACTUALLY CRY CRY
To answer the question, yes Kawai was part of it even if a little bit besides not doing anything at 3:26 if you pay attention Kawai actually pretends to start singing to mess with Shoko and you see Shoko look at her. She acts the hero by saying follow me and then plays the Victim to get sympathy
Because of her playing victim some people have described her worse then Ueno
Kawai's victim BS is more shown in the Manga but it's still present in the movie.
Aka when she starts crying when Ishida called her out
Yeah, a lot of people(myself included) miss that bit about her pretending to sing early, the first time they watch this.
Her attitude is not as kawaii as her name, damn
Nobody can be worse than ueno 😭
@@OutOfPocket-h9e factssss
it's more realistic about how asian teachers doesnt give a shit about bullying(or violence)
It's true, I never actually hate Ishida. In a way he was just trying to stand for everyone.
He might’ve been interested in Shoko as an idea, but I think he cared more about his other friends because he kept trying to please them instead of just letting it go. It’s not like it matters tho. He was too young to know what he was really doing anyway.
@@beyondviolet oh for sure, but for example when he starts raising his hand before the teacher is like "stand up, i know it was you!" he obviously felt bad once he was able to place an actual consequence to his actions. unfortunately for kids its easy for them to think "oh well everyone else is laughing and nobody said it was wrong so this must be fine to do"
Alana: I'm glad nobody died
Grandma: Do i mean nothing to you?
😂😂😂
27:11 just to clarify what those figures mean, they have a symbolical meaning. Shoko wanted to give the Man she loves a present, and what do you gift Your Loved ones normally ? Right, flowers, but she was too shy to give them to him, so she Took those figures instead, which should represent real flowers, and i think that is adorable as hell

Kawaii, one of the greatest gaslighters of all time in anime.
Exactly, she is one of those people who never accepts their fault, like they did no wrong at all.
I feel like the books did a better job with Ueno's character
日本人です。すごく的を得たコメントです。
This movie is not about love, it's about how to learn to love yourself. It made me cry a lot because of how realistic it is.
So it is about love

That scene planted the seed of guilt in everyone(except Kawaii, I despise her with passion), and eventualy, quicker or slower, depending on the person, they started realising the gravity of their behaviour and started to change.
when I finished this movie I cried a lot (also while watching) and then I saw someone commented on this movie on some site that "It's not a movie about forgiveness it's about self acceptance" and I completely felt what he meant

If you read the manga, it continues on for a while past the movie, and you realize that the lazy, apathetic teacher was the villain of the whole story
Yeah! I don't believe in bad characters, but he was written to be just a little sh*tty as*hole. He laughed at Shinomiya having troubles reading while covering his face with his hand.
Edit: I meant nishimiya, I'll leave the error there because I like to laugh at myself.
Ayo fuck that teacher, second least favorite character behind Nishimiya’s dad
@@Yairnardelli Well guess they decided to take another direction in the movie and make him a normal teacher
Fun fact, but the sign Nishimiya uses when leaving the fireworks was the sign for "Goodbye" instead of "See you later".
Yeah, that's kinda it. Kawai worse than Ueno but Ueno still sucks.
@@flipmonke yeah she’s real tho unlike Kawai
Same happen to me in my high school life, and yes just like what you sayin, that bullying efect still haunting me till today
i wanna bully you..
with love and support!!!
I have seen this movie 23 times, every time I feel like crying 😭 my favourite movie
There’s no way to watch this film without crying. I lost count how many times I’ve watched this and still get teary eyed watching the end!🥺
Boss Baby won Oscar for best animated picture over this Gem. Shape of Voice was not even nominated.
Proving Awards don't mean anything.
Thank you!

I recommend rewatching this movie with the intent on observing Maria.
I think someone could probably write an entire character study about Kawai and Ueno beeing oposites! xD
Hell, even their color paletes are basically oposites!
The anime that showed me how emotional, deep, and beautiful anime could be, and help solidify my absolute love for anime!
I love the Dub for this movie cuz the voice actor for Shouko is actually a deaf actress and you can tell. it's so much better.
"Is it ok... to have fun like this?"
I've seen this movie like 10 times at this point and I've cried every single time.
Man this movie makes me cry several times each time I watch it. Thank you for you reaction :)
rewatching this movie with you reminded me how much i loved it at the time, reminded me of my first watch back in April 2020 life was so good then 😭
I can't say much but this movie really saved my life.. It's so saddening that the creators of this beautiful piece of craft are no longer with us..
I've watched this movie several times. It's hard not to cry with this movie.
Glad you liked the movie!!
This studio and director always do really amazing work!
There’s actually a super underrated series by the same studio/director called Hibike! Euphonium which I think you might like too.
this movie well and truly changed me, such a sad moving story that teaches you a lot about how to appreciate life and how to treat others
YEEEEEESSSSSSSS !! I'VE WAITED SO LOOONG FOR THISSSSS
I love you girl that was such a nice reaction and really want to hug you at the end ❤
I absolutely loooove this movie!!! So glad to see you watching this!
+++
i just found your channel, i love your reactions so much 😭😭
52:01 that’s smile is everything
One of the very few movies I've ever seen that have a real chance of changing you after you've watched it. It's my personal favorite anime movie ever made.
Never forget Kawai is probably the worse person there lol. Every time I rewatch this she pisses me off to the bone.
My friend played the voice of Ishida and I can't listen to him cry without crying too. I called him after I first saw the film to ask if he was okay and he laughed at me hahaha
Man this movie exhausted all of my alloted man tears for the year lol. Another great reaction!
This is indeed one of the best, the story is so relatable in real life :')
She should see, Your Lie in April, if she hasn't.
i really hate to say stuff like this, but it's lovely to read the manga after watching the movie and seeing all the stuff they couldn't fit in, like the extended ending 🥰
YES!! I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS THE WHOLE DAY 💓💓💓 BEST WAY TO END THE NIGHT IS TO WATCH ALANA FRFR
27:18 In the dub version she actually says "I love you" either way that moment gave me a extra life point
I love how the film is not about a boy loving a girl, it's about a boy learning to love himself.
This is my favorite Animated movie of all time, even though i cant watch it without crying the lesson behind it is a powerful one, i also feel like we cant talk about this movie without talking about the tragedy that happened to the studio and animators, RIP to those beautiful souls 🙏🏻
