Colons and Semicolons

  • One of the least understood but quietly significant distinctions of grammar is between a semicolon and a colon; this short films explains: when we should use each construction, why it matters that we do so correctly and what we can hope to achieve with one or the other in our sentences.

    This is me: for years I had these thoughts too! Although never so eloquently expressed; people always seemed a bit caught off guard, even annoyed by my use of colons and semi-colons - as well as my use of other types of punctuation. It was such a struggle for me, that -after a while- I found it very difficult to have any sense of how to use them anymore; it felt as if I had unlearned a part of language; unlearned, repressed, a part of myself: a part of my personality; playful use of language and punctuation, but still intentful, while content with the grey messiness of translating speech and thought to writing.

    All of my teachers growing up absolutely hated semicolons, because they found it hard to tell if someone had used it correctly. It’s easier to tell if someone understands the use of a colon because if what they right isn’t a fact after the colon then they are clearly misunderstanding it.
    Semicolons, like you said, link ideas together that can be related but aren’t a definitive.
    Because if this, I haven’t been allowed to use semicolons in my school work, and now find it hard to write with them.

      Tofran Bohk colons : is for a fact and semicolon ; is for a describing one thing that could contribute to a statement
      If you had a feeling for example (easiest way to use a semicolon) it would be:
      Jim was sad; it’s nearly fall.
      This suggests that the change in season isn’t the ONLY reason Jim is sad, but is one reason. It suggests that Jim might not know the other reasons for him being sad, but knows that one of them is because of Fall.

    Thanks for this video. I was an editor in business publishing. I found that writers struggle much more with punctuation than with grammar. Most people never master punctuation, resulting in shoddy prose. Instead, they could transform their writing after 20 minutes' study of punctuation marks. That's better than a lifetime without knowing how to marshal their words. Today we're all writers, so let's do so well.

    This is it! Semicolons deserve so much more love for the fantastic function they possess! I have always gotten complaints from teachers in school that my sentences are too long and that I should use more full stops; in my defiance I just continued using multiple commas and semicolons. For me a sentance is the totality of a thought, not in the grand scale of a philosophical concept but rather a meaningful thought in context. I don't think we really think with full stops most of the time, I suggest that we think with commas, semicolons and abrubt endings and beginnings.

    If you're unsure how to use a semicolon, remember this: both of the parts that a semicolon separates must be able to stand alone as sentences.
    Example: "One is for a winky face; one is for a normal face."
    A period (full-stop) would've worked too.
    There are plenty of good articles online about when & how to use semicolons.

  • @CraigButz
    @CraigButz 6 років тому

    The second Henry James example is not an example of the use of semicolons the video is describing, to divide independent clauses. The words delineated by the semicolons are items in a list of prepositional phrases. They are divided by semicolons rather than commas because one of the prepositional phrases itself contains commas. This use of the semicolon is more like the use of brackets around parentheses in mathematical expressions than joining complete sentences that are related.

Could you please do a video on all the uses and conjugations of the verbs LIE and LAY? I would also like to see you explore the words EFFECT and AFFECT. If I remember correctly, they can both be used as nouns and verbs. Oh, and when is it better to use a dash rather than a colon or semicolon? And why do book publishers have that special long dash when our keyboards only have that measley short dash? We have to type two of them, making our sentence look stupid.

    I know this was done before but i want to give my own take on this.
    IMO Asta would have some form of earth magic, most fittingly alchemy(think something similar to the overhaul quirk in BNHA) "Why tho?" Well so that he would have an opposite type of magic to Yuno, also Asta is strong and sturdy like an earth magic user should be. "But why something like alchemy?" it's simple Asta has the desire to modify or change things also it would be a great paralel to Yuno's simpler magic type.
    In case you are worying that Asta would be a little too OP, it would be like Okuyasu and The Hand

    This is grammar served on a philosophical plate; I like the combination. Also, really impressed by the video: its animation and the narrative voice.
    (I am sure I nailed the use of semicolon and colon....)

    We are friends from the beginning:
    we share grief and ground and gray dread;
    we even share the sun.
    We do not speak to each other,
    because we know too much;
    we are silent to each other,
    we smile our knowledge at each other.
    Are you not the light for my fire ?

    Here's a question for ya! In this passage, would the punctuation after 'football' be a colon or a semicolon? And would the punctuation after 'stretching' be a semicolon or a comma?
    As a preschooler and early grade-schooler, my parents tried to get me to play almost every sport except for football; my team won a little league baseball championship, but I didn’t like it; I played a season of basketball in which I don’t think I scored a single point; I quit after the first day of both soccer and karate, because I didn’t have the fortitude to withstand their respective running and stretching, etc.
    I would think that the one after 'football' would be a colon, but there were other sports not mentioned in the list, so to me, that would mean a colon is not appropriate. As for the one after 'stretching,' it seems unnecessary to use a semicolon to introduce 'etc.' Would you agree?
    All helps is appreciated! :)

    what about this example: im here now if you want to start. If not, we could do it another day: when you are available
    or: im here now if you want to start. If not, we could do it another day; when you are available
    The colon is right bc the last part explains the second last part in more detail, and the semi-colon is incorrect bc the second part could not stand as a sentence on its own, right?

    The description of the video contains an error and ought to read, "This short films explains the following:". The group of words to the left of the colon should always constitute a complete sentence. Also, I think that it's a helpful element of style to capitalize the first word after a colon when the group of words to the right of a colon is a complete sentence. Compare the following:
    a. "Mary likes many types of food: eggs, bacon, fish, and steak."
    b. "Mary likes many types of food: Eggs, bacon, fish, and steak are the only exceptions."
    There might be a better example, because it might sound better to use a semicolon in sentence b. However, I do think that it's helpful to know immediately whether the phrase after the colon constitutes a complete sentence or merely a direct object.

    The semicolon has always been my favorite punctuation mark, if one can have a favorite. I agree they seem to be disappearing, much to the detriment of all.

    I’m confused about this sentence:
    Maria didn’t know what to think: after the divorce, she questioned everything.
    This seems to be two independent clauses unless I am misunderstanding something. So why is a semi-colon not used here instead of a colon.
