There's a woman sitting out on the porch And she's talking to her daughter in a voice so soft Telling her something 'bout the future and the rest of her life And the stars just kept on burning There's a city boy who's restless and rough But when his mama's there to hold him then he ain't so tough She's telling him the lessons he'll be learning for the rest of his life And the planets kept on turning Don't let your dreams get all rusty Keep on using them as hard as you can The night is so much darker than it has any right to be Don't let it all get away from you Don't let it slip through your hands And... Blessed are the lovers just beginning to learn Blessed are the fires just beginning to burn You'll have to pay for it later If you don't get it when it's going for free And you remember that A kiss is a terrible thing to waste Just tell 'em your mama said so A kiss is a terrible thing to waste And "if only" are the loneliest words you'll ever know "If only" are the loneliest words you'll ever know If only I was ten years younger If only I didn't need that touch If only I could lose this hunger If only it didn't mean so much If only I had done things different If only I had done the same If only I had that guy's body If only I had that guy's name There's a couple making out in a car They're steaming up the windows and they've gone so far That they wonder when to stop And they wonder if they're doing it right And the dashboard lights are golden They're staring into each other's eyes They're getting to the truth because their bodies don't lie They hear the voices of their mothers coming back in the night It's an endless plan unfolding Don't let your dreams get all rusty Keep on using them as hard as you can The night is so much darker than it has any right to be Don't let it all get away from you Don't let it slip through your hands And... Blessed are the lovers who'll inherit the earth Blessed are the lovers who discovered it first You'll have to pay for it later If you don't get it when it's going for free And believe me that A kiss is a terrible thing to waste Just tell 'em your mama said so A kiss is a terrible thing to waste And if only are the loneliest words you'll ever know If only are the loneliest words you'll ever know A kiss is a terrible thing to waste Just tell 'em your mama said so A Kiss is a terrible thing to waste And If only are the loneliest words you'll ever know (repeat and fade)
This is really one of his greatest. After I hear of Jim Steinman's passing yesterday, I came back to listen to this. Rory Dodd and Jim Steinman really were a good team. RIP Jim Steinman 1947 - 2021
I can't tell you how much I love this! There surely must be a better quality version of this somewhere... perhaps in Steinman's archives? What an incredible songwriter. RIP Jim Steinman
Non Eric Troyer ! C'était la voix de chœur combiné avec Rory, Eric était un soutien derrière la voix de Rory même lorsqu'il jouait les chœurs c'est toujours Rory en vedette
more of Meat's version of Nowhere Fast. The Bridge is right from there with a bit of a different vocal. And yes, the chorus has the same chord progression but Jim uses that almost in every song to be fair :)
I was thinking the same thing when I first heard it! Mainly that's because it has the same intro into the main verse @ 2:15 - 2:35. On the recording I'm familiar with, you can hear it quite clearly. On THIS recording, someone has turned up the drum track (intentionally?) so that you can only hear it very faintly in the background, and the distorted drum track drowns it out. You'd realize that if you heard the one I did! :-) Edit: You can hear the "Out of the Frying Pan..." intro crystal-clearly on the Everly Bros. demo version of the song: ua-cam.com/video/f4Naz_oDGV0/v-deo.html
The fuzzy quality gives this small masterpiece a longing and melancholic feel.
We Will miss you god of songs, Jim steinman...
Jim & Rory... Pure Brilliance..;)
There's a woman sitting out on the porch
And she's talking to her daughter in a voice so soft
Telling her something 'bout the future and the rest of her life
And the stars just kept on burning
There's a city boy who's restless and rough
But when his mama's there to hold him then he ain't so tough
She's telling him the lessons he'll be learning for the rest of his life
And the planets kept on turning
Don't let your dreams get all rusty
Keep on using them as hard as you can
The night is so much darker than it has any right to be
Don't let it all get away from you
Don't let it slip through your hands
And...
Blessed are the lovers just beginning to learn
Blessed are the fires just beginning to burn
You'll have to pay for it later
If you don't get it when it's going for free
And you remember that
A kiss is a terrible thing to waste
Just tell 'em your mama said so
A kiss is a terrible thing to waste
And "if only" are the loneliest words you'll ever know
"If only" are the loneliest words you'll ever know
If only I was ten years younger
If only I didn't need that touch
If only I could lose this hunger
If only it didn't mean so much
If only I had done things different
If only I had done the same
If only I had that guy's body
If only I had that guy's name
There's a couple making out in a car
They're steaming up the windows and they've gone so far
That they wonder when to stop
And they wonder if they're doing it right
And the dashboard lights are golden
They're staring into each other's eyes
They're getting to the truth because their bodies don't lie
They hear the voices of their mothers coming back in the night
It's an endless plan unfolding
Don't let your dreams get all rusty
Keep on using them as hard as you can
The night is so much darker than it has any right to be
Don't let it all get away from you
Don't let it slip through your hands
And...
Blessed are the lovers who'll inherit the earth
Blessed are the lovers who discovered it first
You'll have to pay for it later
If you don't get it when it's going for free
And believe me that
A kiss is a terrible thing to waste
Just tell 'em your mama said so
A kiss is a terrible thing to waste
And if only are the loneliest words you'll ever know
If only are the loneliest words you'll ever know
A kiss is a terrible thing to waste
Just tell 'em your mama said so
A Kiss is a terrible thing to waste
And If only are the loneliest words you'll ever know

Damn, I wish that this would exist in good quality. I love the demos with Rory Dodd.
This is really one of his greatest.

@@NeovenatorRex Damn he just died a few days ago? RIP, Jim. Thanks for all the songs and more importantly the emotions they woke in us.
@@JJ-lb6hm He will never be forgotten. I was also caught offguard by the tragic news.

Agree My brother.
I really wish this version of the song had been properly released it's actually my favourite version of this song.
Can't stop listening. Why am I just now hearing this?
3:31 That is almost certainly Jim on backing vocals
Non Eric Troyer ! C'était la voix de chœur combiné avec Rory, Eric était un soutien derrière la voix de Rory même lorsqu'il jouait les chœurs c'est toujours Rory en vedette
Rory and Eric are there...but there's indeed a bit of Jim, too. 😉👌
I'd stopped searching for this years ago. Thanks for posting.
Beautiful Rory..
The build-up to the bridge at 4:18 made my hair stand up. Brilliant!
I would like to hear the demo version of "Total Eclipse of the Heart"
At least he actually sang the answering male part on the final recording....
@@magicroomstudios he passed away, Jim.
Una muy.buena cancion.
I have only found the Everly Brothers’ version in the last year, and now this swoops in and takes the crown.
this song is perfect! the lyrics are very deep
Finally this masterpiece is back on youtube.
I used to know a place to find this, but now it seems to be gone. Thank you for posting it here. Love it!

The man who covered meats ass! awesome rory
and quite an ass it is to cover!
anybody else hear "out of the frying pan and into the fire" when they listen to this?
more of Meat's version of Nowhere Fast. The Bridge is right from there with a bit of a different vocal. And yes, the chorus has the same chord progression but Jim uses that almost in every song to be fair :)
The way this song progresses reminds me a lot of "I'd do anything for Love (But I won't do that)"

It's Eric Troyer and Rory Dodd
