This is exactly why I love UA-cam! I'm a big Steinman fan but never knew this even existed. I've heard the other two versions but this sounds completely different. Would love to know if there are any more unreleased gems from the Original Sin sessions! Thanks very much for posting!!
I think they ruined it with those awful promotional CDs they gave away. Had the talking parts and parts of some of the worst songs on. Was my favourite album for years and everyone I played it to as a student loved it too.
“Life is my kiss, and it’s a terrible thing to waste…” This song is just so emotional for me right now on so many levels... It reminds me of my own struggles in life in following my dreams: falling down hard, giving up, and then eventually coming back on my own feet again, stronger than ever before. And me now knowing that we can always find a way to become stronger no matter how challenging the times may get... Life is now my kiss, and it's a terrible thing to waste... Rest in peace Jim. I will always cherish your songs in my journey through life.❤
Oh my God... I'm moved. I don't know how to say thank you for this upload. After 28 years listening to Steinman, this is the first time in my life I can hear this version... A true pearl from a true genius. Steinman truly changed my life. I can say I wouldn't be the man that I've become without his music
Well put. Jim has influenced my musical direction in a way no one ever could. Where do people find these things? Wherever and however, thank you for sharing.
A KISS IS A TERRIBLE THING TO WASTE What’s the matter, boy? You got a chill or something? You’ve been shaking like a leaf Ever since we started driving around Why don’t we park it over there by the tracks? I’ll tell you something now Well you’ve never looked as good As you’ve been looking to me And I believe you’ve got it all and then more And you’ll be looking even better in a minute or two Don’t let it all get away from you Don’t let it slip away through your hands You’ll never feel the rain if you never know it’s coming You’ll never heal the pain if you never stop your running from it Baby, baby don’t you know by now Everything in life will fade Baby, baby we’ll all get by somehow There’s no reason to be so afraid It’s just an innocent taste And a kiss is a terrible thing to waste A kiss is a terrible thing to waste Just tell ‘em your mama said so A kiss is a terrible thing to waste And one of these nights you’re gonna show me that you already know A kiss is a terrible thing to waste Just tell ‘em your mama said so A kiss is a terrible thing to waste And one of these nights you’re gonna show me what you already know … Well, there’s a current in the air And it’s charging up the sky I get a bolt of lightning Every time I run my hands down your chest And your heart is really rocking like a drummer on fire Don’t let your dreams get all rusty Keep on using them as hard as you can The night is so much darker than it has any right to be Don’t let it all get away from you Don’t let it slip through your hands (don’t let it slip through your hands) Blessed are the lovers just beginning to learn Blessed are the fires just beginning to burn You’ll have to pay for it later If you don’t get it when it’s going for free And believe me that- A kiss is a terrible thing to waste Just tell ‘em your mama said so A kiss is a terrible thing to waste And one of these nights you’re gonna show me that you already know A kiss is a terrible thing to waste Just tell ‘em your mama said so A kiss is a terrible thing to waste And one of these nights you’re gonna show me what you already know … Don’t let it all get away from you Don’t let it slip away through your hands You’ll never feel the rain if you never know it’s coming You’ll never heal the pain if you never stop your running from it Baby, baby don’t you know by now Everything in life will fade Baby, baby we’ll all get by somehow There’s no reason to be so afraid It’s just an innocent taste And a kiss is a terrible thing to waste A kiss is a terrible thing to waste Just tell ‘em your mama said so A kiss is a terrible thing to waste And one of these nights you’re gonna show me that you already know A kiss is a terrible thing to waste Just tell ‘em your mama said so A kiss is a terrible thing to waste And one of these nights you’re gonna show me what you already know A kiss is a terrible thing to waste Just tell ‘em your mama said so A kiss is a terrible thing to waste And “if only” are the loneliest words you’ll ever know “If only” are the loneliest words you’ll ever know (a kiss is a terrible thing to waste, just tell ‘em your mama said so) (a kiss is a terrible thing to waste …) A kiss is a terrible thing to waste Baby, baby Oh baby Just tell ‘em your mama said so …
Jim Steinman, like lots of creators, used to recycle many of his melodies into variations on the same themes. Part of the fun, when you are one of his many fans, is to notice these variations. In this gem, for instance, you can hear fragments of past (and future) material, like his version of the same song for the Everly Brothers, especially when it gets more rythmic.
It's hard to say why, but I get such a deep sense of sadness from this song. More than the scene the lyrics are setting, something like the ending of a world.
Also, c. 3:37 - 4:05 it sounds reminiscent of the lead-in and verse of "Objects in the Rearview Mirror"; considering that it was the last thing written for "Bat II," I wonder if Steinman based "Objects" off that particular section of this demo...? :-/
When Steinman had a good part of a song that didn’t turn into a success, he seemed to install it into another song because he obviously liked it so much, and was vindicated with that new version being a hit
Holy crap - this is a lot to swallow! Definitely not the same as the Rory Dodd version. But I've heard that there were *four* original demos of this song: this, the Rory Dodd vers., the Everly Bros. vers., and one other. Of course, that's not including the Metal Philharmonic/Scarpia demo of "A Kiss is a Terrible Thing to Waste" from "Whistle Down the Wind." But in any case, Jim's definitely gotten a lot of good usage out of this title / lyric! :-)
Dunno if he did it on purpose but the chorus is defintely based on a section from Read em and Weep: If I could only find the words then I would write it all down If I could only find a voice I would speak Oh it's there in my eyes, oh can't you see me tonight C'mon and look at me and read 'em and weep Doesn't make it a bad song and I know JS has done that sort of thing before but given that song's strong connection to Meat Loaf I wonder if he left it off the album to reinforce that this was defintely NOT a ML song? Either was, thanks so much for uploading it love me some JS at any time of the day!!!!
Makes sense. I SO wish that Jim had produced a version of Meat singing "Read 'Em and Weep" or that A.I. could somehow overlay Meat's vocals onto the instrumental tracks that he produced for Barry Manilow. To me, THAT would be the *correct* version of the song! 😉
Too many slow songs? You need some balance on an album. Also, I'm 100 percent sure would work better as a fast song. Similar as it picks up later in the song, similar to (cited) Rebel without a clue
The melody is a totally different one from the one Andrew Lloyd Weber wrote. The lyrics are largely different. Worth noting is that Weber was absolutely channeling Steinman for their musical, WHISTLE DOWN THE WIND.
Well - maybe with the exception of "Renegade Angel," which was supposed to be the *ultimate* car-crash song, based on those from the 50's & 60's (such as "Tell Laura I Love Her," "Leader of the Pack," and "Teenager in Love.") :-) During the mid-90's "Bat II" phase, he also cited something similar that he was gonna write for Meat Loaf called, "One Night on a Motorcycle: A Kiss is a Terrible Thing to Waste." Of course, that was then cut into two separate titles for "Whistle Down the Wind." I think one or two other unused titles are still out there, but the number is definitely limited! :-)
It's very similar in parts and much slower to the 1985 (and 1987) version of the song, but I prefer this. They really are different songs, all three. The 1985, this 1989 version and the 1998 version with music by ALW, all them are terrific!
Likely because it inspired him to write (and also sounded too similar to) "Safe Sex." He also may have wanted to save it for a later project - he knew at that point that he was going to be doing "Bat Out of Hell II" with Meat Loaf, and while this title didn't make the cut on THAT album, there was a rumor that on one of Meat's follow-up projects ("Bat III?") there was gonna be featured a song called, "One Night on a Motorcycle: A Kiss is a Terrible Thing to Waste." Seems that that was cut to just "A Kiss is a Terrible Thing to Waste" before being featured in "Whistle Down the Wind." 😉 But as with everything, the ultimate answer seems to be, "Who knows?" 🤷♂ 😝👌
sorry man, you're wrong. i've got the mp3 from a friend and i've simply uploaded here. i've never seen before on youtube. you said something without first being informed of what you were saying: I hate it when people do that.
Just found it odd that the only person who had uploaded this got it from Steinman himself....and people do what i said they do. If i got you wrong then i apologise
A song of Jim is a terrible thing to waste
Yassss
Gotta be the best unreleased Steinman song out there
This is exactly why I love UA-cam! I'm a big Steinman fan but never knew this even existed. I've heard the other two versions but this sounds completely different. Would love to know if there are any more unreleased gems from the Original Sin sessions! Thanks very much for posting!!
RIP Jim. You wrote some of the most beautiful songs
Great stuff! Really wish Pandora's Box recorded more than one album.
So do I
Yeah, Steinman's epic girlgroup, it should have been a succes.
I think they ruined it with those awful promotional CDs they gave away. Had the talking parts and parts of some of the worst songs on.
Was my favourite album for years and everyone I played it to as a student loved it too.
Just outstanding, the Pachelbel intro just melts into the whole piece so beautifully. What a creator.
Could you point me to the original piece by Pachelbel, please.

same here! He gave me music that soothed the lows and accelerated the highs.
ME TOO BRO
Perfect description of my feelings about his music
Well put. Jim has influenced my musical direction in a way no one ever could.

Same dude. I’m crying over his immense loss
R.I.P.

A master of writing songs 🎵
You can hear the rhythm around 2:40 is similar to "Rebel without a clue".
A KISS IS A TERRIBLE THING TO WASTE
What’s the matter, boy?
You got a chill or something?
You’ve been shaking like a leaf
Ever since we started driving around
Why don’t we park it over there by the tracks?
I’ll tell you something now
Well you’ve never looked as good
As you’ve been looking to me
And I believe you’ve got it all and then more
And you’ll be looking even better in a minute or two
Don’t let it all get away from you
Don’t let it slip away through your hands
You’ll never feel the rain if you never know it’s coming
You’ll never heal the pain if you never stop your running from it
Baby, baby don’t you know by now
Everything in life will fade
Baby, baby we’ll all get by somehow
There’s no reason to be so afraid
It’s just an innocent taste
And a kiss is a terrible thing to waste
A kiss is a terrible thing to waste
Just tell ‘em your mama said so
A kiss is a terrible thing to waste
And one of these nights you’re gonna show me that you already know
A kiss is a terrible thing to waste
Just tell ‘em your mama said so
A kiss is a terrible thing to waste
And one of these nights you’re gonna show me what you already know …
Well, there’s a current in the air
And it’s charging up the sky
I get a bolt of lightning
Every time I run my hands down your chest
And your heart is really rocking like a drummer on fire
Don’t let your dreams get all rusty
Keep on using them as hard as you can
The night is so much darker than it has any right to be
Don’t let it all get away from you
Don’t let it slip through your hands (don’t let it slip through your hands)
Blessed are the lovers just beginning to learn
Blessed are the fires just beginning to burn
You’ll have to pay for it later
If you don’t get it when it’s going for free
And believe me that-
A kiss is a terrible thing to waste
Just tell ‘em your mama said so
A kiss is a terrible thing to waste
And one of these nights you’re gonna show me that you already know
A kiss is a terrible thing to waste
Just tell ‘em your mama said so
A kiss is a terrible thing to waste
And one of these nights you’re gonna show me what you already know …
Don’t let it all get away from you
Don’t let it slip away through your hands
You’ll never feel the rain if you never know it’s coming
You’ll never heal the pain if you never stop your running from it
Baby, baby don’t you know by now
Everything in life will fade
Baby, baby we’ll all get by somehow
There’s no reason to be so afraid
It’s just an innocent taste
And a kiss is a terrible thing to waste
A kiss is a terrible thing to waste
Just tell ‘em your mama said so
A kiss is a terrible thing to waste
And one of these nights you’re gonna show me that you already know

Just tell ‘em your mama said so
A kiss is a terrible thing to waste
And one of these nights you’re gonna show me what you already know

“If only” are the loneliest words you’ll ever know
(a kiss is a terrible thing to waste, just tell ‘em your mama said so)
(a kiss is a terrible thing to waste …)
A kiss is a terrible thing to waste
Baby, baby
Oh baby
Just tell ‘em your mama said so …
thaksss a lott!
We love Jim steinman. God bless Jim steinman and meat loaf
Never heard that version god rest Jim steinman a master of music 🎶
Excellent. Great vocals from Ms Taylor. I have Pandora's Box Original Sin album and that was fabulous. Shame they never did anymore.
Masterpiece!

I affectionately refer to it as a Jim Steinman Easter Egg.
Intro is outstanding
Brilliant album.

I'm blown away.... Totally Steinman.. Amazinigly beautiful. thank you.
Its unfortunate pandoras box never caught on
A real shame this didn't make the album. It really is great.
OMS Something new (well old but new for me) from Pandora's Box, goddammit this is amazing, wonder why it was never included on the album.
2:40 - A rebel without a clue part
Definitely! Good call. :-)
Also, c. 3:37 - 4:05 it sounds reminiscent of the lead-in and verse of "Objects in the Rearview Mirror"; considering that it was the last thing written for "Bat II," I wonder if Steinman based "Objects" off that particular section of this demo...? :-/

@@larkefedifero Yes, it sounds a bit like it. "Objects..." is also basically a variation of "Surf's Up".

well theres meat loaf's version form his greatest hits album in 1998, it's like the whistle down the wind version but better
Epic....
incredible
Dunno if he did it on purpose but the chorus is defintely based on a section from Read em and Weep:
If I could only find the words then I would write it all down
If I could only find a voice I would speak
Oh it's there in my eyes, oh can't you see me tonight
C'mon and look at me and read 'em and weep

WHY OH WHY WAS THIS LEFT OFF PANDORA'S BOX
Cherry on top if it was included.

perhaps it was timing and it may have been agreed for Whistle Down The Wind
oh my master....
Were there other demos that are now released?
The melody is a totally different one from the one Andrew Lloyd Weber wrote. The lyrics are largely different.
Worth noting is that Weber was absolutely channeling Steinman for their musical, WHISTLE DOWN THE WIND.
He really doesnt let great songs go to waste or titles for that matter
Well - maybe with the exception of "Renegade Angel," which was supposed to be the *ultimate* car-crash song, based on those from the 50's & 60's (such as "Tell Laura I Love Her," "Leader of the Pack," and "Teenager in Love.") :-)

Uhhhh - care to elaborate at all on the 1987 version?! Or is that actually the Everly Brothers version?!? 🙂
@@larkefedifero Oh there's no recording but lyrics exist for a 1987 version that incorporates 'For Crying Out Loud'
It should have been part of the album.
...my favourite is the meat loaf locker room version from storytellers
a kiss is tairable thing to waste a body is tairable thing to go waste
Any ideas why this masterpiece wasn’t on the official Pandoras Box album
Likely because it inspired him to write (and also sounded too similar to) "Safe Sex." Space. Records couldn't be five feet wide to accommodate all the Steinman songs.
Go to hear Everly Brothers version!!!!!!
Wow! Didn’t know about this. Where did you get this? 👍🏼
somewhere. now it's not rare anymore.
Felice Carruezzo Wow, I forgot to say thank you. 😊
He got it from youtube and just reuploaded it himself...i hate it when people do that, but oh well, it brought you to the song i guess

Steinman fans who haven't heard his contribution to Sisters of Mercy might consider a listen: ua-cam.com/video/q-RVJyNpfDk/v-deo.html
Steinman also helped write (and then produced) this gem for Sisters of Mercy: ua-cam.com/video/BURM7l6_pvg/v-deo.html
Bought it first time round could not get my head round it still cannot
I didn't know about this demo version of the song. I knew of the other one with band member Rory Dodd vocals.
