maggie purposely got it wrong because she thinks it's lunch time and doesn't want to waste time with those kids
Very agreeable
“eLbAeErGa YrEv”
Humans: what is 9\3 ?
Dog: Hooman am I a joke to you ? Gimme something to integrate, not 9/3. Guess ill fail purposely.
Maggie was just putting down her foot
Seems like clever hans
awesome
Oldest con in the book.
NOTICE that the dog is looking at the lady.
On a cue from the lady, the dog starts tapping its foot, then on another subtle cue from the lady, the dog stops tapping its foot.
I hear of a story that a horse knew maths.. tapped it's leg on the ground same like this dog.. then some scientist wanted to see if this was real or fake.. the owner thought it really was doing maths however when the scientist asked to be alone with the horse with just it's owner they gave the horse some maths and had the owner face away from the horse.. the horse always got the maths wrong cause the horse wasnt reading the maths he was reading his owner intenses expression when the horse got to the last number..
I WANT DOG TO WIN
That surprises me coming from you Tom...here's some catnip for ya.
who agrees that the dog answered 3 at the last one please reply.
Fake, why would she mistake over simple problem when she succeeded in harder ones?
who else see some of the kids cheating off the dog!?!?! hahaha
+Ronnie Long bruh did you see that one kid? he was counting in his head what 3+7 was... THATS ONE OF THE EASIEST QUESTIONS EVER
@ Idk about that, a lot of 7th graders are doing algebra 1 now. I didn't get to learn that shit until 9th grade, so there are improvements.
@@jpthepersona some possibly, but there are more idiots being born. The smart people don't want to have kids while the stupid and ignorant do.
@@elijahlees8655 hahah so true
The answer of dog for last question was correct!
She tapped 3 times then she wanted to put her feet down so the teachers count the last on too!!!!
That is not fair!!!!
But that was a good challenge for Dog and The cute students.
:)
World Biggest Game Hacker I absolutely agree with. I think the last one was just lack of dexterity or something.. The last one was slower,, and there was no tap. It seemed like (what you said) she was only putting her foot back down.. So not fair.
Woah! The dog was correct. He tapped only thrice! The poor dog has to put his foot down too, right??
Maggie meant 3 taps on that last one. It's easy to see watching the video. It was a balance thing.
er1c3142010 Maggie answered 3 at the last one
The dog just put his foot down not tapping again.
IM SAD exactly
You’ right!
That’s what I thought
For real tho! Justice for Maggie!
I would like to see the experiment repeated without the trainer present.
Without the trainer patting the table off to the side.
I see you've just heard of the Clever Hans Effect
The obvious explanation is that the trainer is doing the math and subtly (maybe not even consciously) signalling the dog when to stop tapping. This turned out in 1907 to be the explanation for how a horse called Clever Hans seemed to be able to do math. Notice that Maggie's attention was all on the trainer, not the guy asking the questions.
that's because dogs are loyal to their masters. He is probably a little nervous anyway. Plus he's use to her giving him the problems and he looks to her for reassurance that everything is going to be OK. The horse story you brought up, well, this isn't that story.
theres always that one guy that has to ruin everything.
@Nadia Victoria whats a "real job"?
i was searching for this comment
@@ther.e.d4983 😂😂 atleast he speaks the truth
He was just putting his paw down
Maggie seemed to be looking intensely at the owner. I wonder how well Maggie will do without the owner in the room.
I believe I read somewhere that the dog really just was reading of the humans body language, and was not able to do any mathematics by itself.
ugh212 Dead on! Notice the trainer is within the Maggie's view and can hear and see the problems as they are being presented by the teacher. Fix this defect in the experiment and Maggie will tap-tap-tap on and on without the subtle clues she gets from her trainer that causes her to stop tapping. This is exactly the same trick done exactly the same by Clever Hans over a century ago.
Martin Dariush How the hell do you "read" the answer to a math question off of someone? I'd seriously like to learn that trick because it would be better than being able to calculate. The people aren't even moving when the dog is tapping out the numbers. And the dog isn't tapping slowly enough to be able to stop in time if there were some subtle cue that can't be caught on camera.
Geez, instead of demanding lessons in the observer-expectancy effect, why not use your skills (assuming you have any) to research the Clever Hans Effect?
You may think you're some kind of expert on canine cognition and perception, promontorium, but this is a clear example of observer-expectancy. If you had seen the entire BBC program, instead of this UA-cam teaser you might not have made a fool of yourself.
promontorium watch the woman's mouth again. she mouthed the numbers.
Neal Scroggs A hole in your theory would be the fact that the teacher didn't even flinch during the dog's 7 + 3 = 10 task solving. Meaning, she didn't give it any kind of signal to stop at 10 taps.
So the dog taps out the answer before they write their's down? I would just listen to the taps. Also, that dog only tapped 3 times on the last one. Unless that sound effect was added in.
I met this dog in Victoria, BC. It really does know how to count.
Maggie purposefully got it wrong so that kids wouldn't feel bad about losing to a dog
she is not just smart but wise and kind
Exactly!
the owner has a really strong connection with the dog and the dog can read the trainers body language or something like that thats my guess
Also, the dog CLEARLY tapped 3 times on the last one, and the last "tap" was actually the dog trying to stand, you know, since it DOES need all four legs to stand on.
I'm way more impressed that there are people gullible enough to believe this than I would be if it were actually true.
Lol at the 75 divided by 3 question, the kid just copies Maggie's answer
+DarkTigerstar and Brokenstar I know lol, this test didn't seem too scientific :P
LOL i know right xD they waited for the dog to answer first lol xD im still impressed that the dog cant do maths its crazy
Me: "Hello dog, what's 738 x 42?"
Dog: "Tap, Tap, Tap, Tap, Tap, Tap, Tap, Tap, Tap, Tap, Tap, Tap, Tap, Tap, Tap, Tap, Tap, Tap, Tap, Tap, Tap, Tap, Tap, Tap, Tap, Tap, Tap, Tap, Tap, Tap, Tap, Tap, Tap, Tap, Tap, Tap, ...
The dog failed intentionally to make the kids happy
✋Stop Being Unfair!
That's completely not fair! The dog tapped 3 times and then wanted to put its foot back down, the last one was slower,, and there was no tap. The dog was only putting its foot back down. I feel that the teacher did unfair thing to the smart and lovely dog just because the dog is not human like him and the kids!
A dog definitely cant do math, so it was either prelearned or he was getting signals when to stop tapping.
75 dives in 25. 15 dives five. That's three because 5 *3 za 15 Maggie. Not 1.classmate.
NO NO NO maggie done 3 paws at the end it was a tie
Maggie is being nice that's why she had it wrong
Maggie said 3 taps the 4th one was she's getting her paw on the table.Idiot counter
that dog is smarter than me
Dogs are EXTREMELY attuned to body language. It’s they way they communicate with each other. In a way a dog can read a persons face even better than we can read each others. If her trainer even barely slightly signaled with her face, even subconsciously, the dog would pick that out. It’s pretty impressive but the real test would be with Just Maggie in the room.
7+3=16, lmao these kids must be trolling
Awkward moment when you try and calculate 75 ÷ 25 and get it wrong...
Watch part 2 of this video to find out the truth about Maggie the Maths Dog: Is Maths Dog Maggie a Fraud? - Extraordinary Animals - Series 2 - Earth
what kind of an idiot upload is this *BBC Earth* ? lest you forgot, you (BBC) are amongst the oldest and revered producers of nature docu. and commission others to do it and Animal Planet, Discovery practically started off with content bought from you!
you might as well start featuring my, miracle penile enlargement medicinal/ ayurvedic tonic that i make. one just needs to have a spoonful, every alternate day for three weeks!
I think it's still disingenuous to say the 7 year old kids are smarter. Sure they can do Maths ever so slightly better, but the Jack Russel can find food almost anywhere on earth, can find it's way home if it gets lost, can track down people who are lost, instinctively knows what will harm him and what he can harm, it can use telekenetic (or one of the tele words anyway) powers to read it's owners mind from miles away so he can be ready and waiting at the door when they get home while these kids are still afraid of the dark. Dogs are awesome creatures, kids will become awesome creatures but aren't quite there yet.
Love your comment. It is so true, but most people are not smart enough to recognize the intelligence of animals. Some animals are really intelligent in the way they are able to communicate their wants and needs without speaking our language, but some humans are too dumb to understand what they are trying to say while others are smart enough to pick it up. So sometimes it's really the human who are too dumb to recognize the intelligence of the animal, and they are also usually the ones who are loudest in comment sections like this talking about how dumb animals are, how they don't have feelings, how everything is just instinct etc., and in this case that it's just the Clever Hans Effect. Their logic is if one incident at one time was the so-called Clever Hans Effect with one particular animal, then all incidents must be the same with all animals. It's OK to be skeptical, but to refuse to even acknowledge that animals might actually be smarter than they thought, when there are actual animals out there learning and speaking English with buttons and asking existential questions right now, is just a clear sign of narrow-mindedness.
That being said, I don't think he is actually doing math, although there are dogs out there who can do simple math, but 75 divided by 25 was what got me thinking there is something fishy here. I actually think he is using telepathy, reading the answers in her mind. It might seem crazy, but I have noticed a lot of animals DO use telepathy. And I have tested it out several times with some animals including my own dog, especially in his older years before he died when our bond had grown way stronger than when he was younger, and we both had become wiser and in my case I had experienced a spiritual awakening. I would look at him when he was on the sofa and in my mind I asked him to go to the door if he could pick up my thoughts and I would see the image of the door in my mind, and he would go to the door, I gave him no verbal or visual que. One time he "sent" me an urgent message when he was alone at my cabin and I was somewhere else. I got the message to hurry back to the cabin, and when I got there and opened the door I was met by my dog who was pouncing with his tounge out dripping, clearly in distress and super warm because the cabin was overheated for some reason. Somehow the thermostat heaters were turned up to full, and to this day I don't know how that happened, I didn't do it and there were no one else there, but I got the message in my mind from my dog to hurry home! If I hadn't done so at that time he would probably have died that day. Telepathy is real, but I guess the human has to be just as intuned as the animals are for it to work. You have to be on the same frequency to pick it up, to receive the message. I believe this dog and his owner are on the same wavelength.
I find this very suspect.
2:30. The animal tapped 3 times then put it’s paw down!!
That is a mistake that has been put in on UA-cam!
The trainer is signalling to the dog.
dog does arithmetic?
I learned devision in 2 grade
my dog did my homework
darn kids copying dat dog :l
I failed my maths gcse and there’s a dog doing maths.
Having a counting dog would make math class much more fun
Have a look at. best talking budgie (Charlie). This bird is incredible and so small
Is it scientifically proven, i dont think so. So whats the point of this video? To make people love animals maybe?!!! BBC has always been a great nature educator for the public, so whats with pseudoscience business here. Not good.
This is clearly bogus. If anyone has studied psychology and operant conditioning you could clearly see that the dog is reacting to the owner. Look up the story of CLEVER HANS... A HORSE who was supposedly able to DO MATH as well. They eventually found out that he was reacting to very subtle cues the owner/trainer was giving him. Look at the Jack Russell in this video....when is he not looking at the woman? The true test would be to have him look away from her and ask him to do math.... You will get your answer then.
A dog better at math than kids wowsers😂
I'm not the kind of person who tries to doubt everything. But I have to wonder if these "equations" weren't prelearned and designated. If so the dog was just doing a trick in accordance to the words it learned. Like "roll over" I do know a few dog trainers that use such ploys to make their dogs appear they are doing a trick differently than what it really is. But if this dog really does know math then we as humans (as a whole) need to rethink how we perceive animals.. Don't get me wrong, I hate animal abuse and neglect; and I already have mixed feelings about Zoos. However, I can see keeping an animal in a zoo that was injured in such a way that returning it to the wild would mean certain and soon death. But if animals are this rational like this video they may suffer more than we every knew being caged all the time.
Interesting, but why spend the time and resources to even study this? What use is a dog learning maths? Is there any real point? It seems clever, but I believe this "phenomena" is just shape / pattern memorizing. How would the dog do without the trainer present? Were the math problems pre-determined or actually randomized? The dog clearly gave the last one 4 taps, not a balance issue.
It's hard to believe that the dog knows 75 ÷ 25 = 3
But.... Maggie didn’t get the last one wrong though? She tapped the table three times and then she put her foot down again, right?
It's an act guys; The dog wasn't actually doing arithmetic rather is owner tossing how to count how many fingers she's holding up, using some sort of sign language. Impressive, however, not arithmetic!
This is cool and all, but this is a very bad way to carry out an experiment; the owner was present and could've affected results, the students could've just listened to the dog's tapping which would also affect the results, and for God's sake they counted the last one incorrect when it indeed was correct. Pfft, so many errors.
2:50 when ur happy you bet a 7 year old dog at simple math
Maggie failed the simple math problem because she thought the hard questions were way too easy and that signals she wants harder questions lol
DTU don't spoke me
Design patent roppery
My horse could calculate 2 fruit in my hand
A box full
Free went straight to the box
Going on a transporter, she calculated to get a much sweet food
Carrot
Ot
Ot
Also all the kids copied Maggie and then each other so I think Maggie deserved to win
Is it actively solving the problems or is it just based on its memories
what a disgrace from puppylovers to compare dogs to humans and make them look like a dog actually can do math LMAO
I've met a dog that can do square roots and multiplication.... how TF does anyone teach a dog math?
Fake as hell
Me- Smart dog
Some Bad Commenters- Dumb dogs only knows to tap
Me- S(h)ame to you
Well that dog is very cleaver .. more than those kids i believe :)
you seem like a 'cleaver' person yourself
Stop saying "Maths"
why
My five year old cousin knows division and I thought that was normal 😂
I saw her tapping 3. The last tap she was just putting her foot gently back down.
OH WOW THE DOG WAS PUTTING ITS FOOT DOWN THE GUYS ONLY COUNTED IT AS 4 SO THE PARENTS WOULDNT GET MAD THAT DOG IS SMARTER!!!!!!!!!!
I believe it's possible but I'd like to see how to dog was trained and how they are asking it the math problem, and not have the camera on the people all the time.
this made no sense to me. The dog isn't even looking at the board. The BBC failed on this one
Maggie is the Winner .. , if ask the question again, , 100 % sure , maggie give correct answer...
Without the owner she can't do math, her eye contact is directly linked to the paw tapping....
Have they tested it scientifically? Does anyone remember Clever Hans (the horse).
Yes Jack Russell Are Smartest Small Dogs In the world
1.58 she has her hand on the table with 2 fingers up which he is looking at
you can see that woman slightly pulls her head up when maggie needs to stop.
AND THE TEACHER ALSO COUNTED IT BECAUSE HE DIDN'T WANT US TO KNOW HE DOESN'T TEACH WELL
Maggie threw the kids a bone. That last question
Cringed badly at 1:17 when the kid counted with his fingers
I've been a scientist for over
50 years, and my Jack Russel is smarter than I am....
He or she is much better than my dog who past many years ago.
Maggie tapped 3 times. The final tap was resting her paw.
i assume this is some sort of signal the owner is giving the dog
Kurzgesagt brought me here.(GRB vid)
its not like the dog can talk he is counting with his paw DUH
Math the root of everything the rules the mechanics
I came kurzgesagt's gamma ray bursts video
Wow genius dog!
These kids literally copying the dog lol
Sinister starring these kids really 3:11
3:12 That face familiar hahaha
Sorry these are memorized sums, dog can't understand division
tayokarate you humans can't stand accepting that there are other smart creatures other than you can you?
How did you teach the dog the equation??
All answers resulted in values less than 10
Maggie did not train than 4. So she failed.
Sean can give me McDonald's for free
