Humans think of time as purely numerical when if you think about it, all it is is the moon orbiting the earth and the earth orbiting the sun. There could be plenty of other ways to tell the time, it's just that numbers make more sense to the human mind.

Many years ago, my parents had a Border Collie, Duke. Duke could tell time. While my father didn't always feed Duke at exactly the same time every day, at exactly 5:00 PM every day, Duke would start barking for someone to feed him. You could set your watches and clocks by Duke. He would not start barking at 4:59, and he would not wait till 5:01. At exactly 5:00 every afternoon, Duke would start barking for his food. And he was an outside dog. He was outside with Gypsy and Bandit. We never noticed anything outside making noises at five o'clock. We don't know why he started barking at exactly 5:00 every afternoon; but he did. You could set your clock by him.

I taught my German Shepherd to whisper so she wouldn't wake my wife up when she needed to go outside (I was usually awake).
One day I fell asleep too & when my wife woke she let out a startled yelp, I asked what, she pointed & I let out my own startled yelp!
She (dog) was so used to whispering and not waking my wife up that instead she put just her head on the bed, right in front of my wife's face & just stared at her so the second my wife woke up she'd be noticed LOL

One of the most prominent and universal ideas I've heard from trainer is that dogs can actually smell the change in air/atmosphere at different times of day. For example, they can smell and feel changes in temperature as the sun rises or sets.

Animals can tell time. Period. Every day, my horses make their ways through the pasture. At a certain time every day, they are at a certain spot. After breakfast, they make their ways to the back of the pasture and work their ways back to the barn by the end of the day. At 10:30 almost every morning, they are grazing by the arena. They usually drink at the same times, too. I set my clock every morning to get up but my pet pig religiously wakes up at 4:45 am and expects breakfast. His daily routines are so predictable. I can set my watch by his actions, to the minute. The pig and the dog are able to hold their potty breaks the entire day while I'm at work. I put puppy pads down for both, but they never use them. My birds squawk at the same times three times per day. Like clockwork. Also, I have lots of wildlife here on the farm that show up at the same times everyday. Animals can tell time.

Exactly - who's to say the smell hasn't faded by midday? The t-shirt trick may have thrown the dog in some other way, like making him believe the guy was already home. Why can't dogs, like us, have a general sense of duration? Their memories are not THAT short. Btw, the presenter's annoying voice reminds me why I don't have a tv any more!

xoxb2 yes it could be a number of things. But smells don’t disappear just like that, they fade away probably much more like an exponential, ie no matter how much time has passed some smell is always left and but is still decreasing in proportion to how much smell is left and this is theoretically detectable.

I have never worn a watch and I am extremely good at guessing the time. I am rarely more than 5-10 minutes out and a lot of the time I guess it correctly to the minute. I do this by judging time intervals (e.g. it feels like about 95 minutes after I got up) not by knowing what time it is. I don't see any reason at all why dogs can't do the same.

    What a gorgeous Vizsla!
We were owned by a Vizsla for 14 years. She liked to go to bed (yes, she slept on the bed with us) at 9:30 pm. My husband was a night owl, so I usually went to bed first. , And every night at around 9:30 Beka would come to me and bark, whine, nudge and pester until I gave up and went to bed. After the first month of this I always checked the clock when she accosted me, and it was always within 10 minutes on either side of 9:30. She would be confused when we changed the clocks in the spring and fall, but she always got back on track within a day or so.
Likewise, the horses at a nearby barn always gathered at the gates of their pastures at 4:30 pm, which is when they were brought in and given dinner. Like Beka, they were confused by the change in fall and spring, but they, too, adjusted within a few days.

Our *cat* would go to the front door and groom itself for a few minutes as if it was waiting for her and then, sure enough, we'd hear Mom unlocking the door and walking in. Cats have excellent hearing and dad and I would often surmise the cat could "hear" her car coming down the street in the evening, but we never actually figured out *how* he knew. :)

Explanation why: Since animals are braindead, we as humans can figure some things out by ourselves, with logical thinking and etc. Animals learn by habbits, since the routine in the house is constantly the same, the dog realizes , so the woman came, the man will come too. Sometimes, even little details can change the entire way they think. And change their habbits, like if the man cane later for maybe one day, the dog will get confused and entirely change the way he acts ( his habbit of standing on the couch) and do something else the next day/s or whenever. This happens constantly troughout the dogs life.

To make this a fair test they need to keep spreading the smell of the owner throughout the house 'resetting the smell' and see if the dog adapts after some time and once again knows when the owner's about to return.
Until then I'm not entirely convinced. I think if a cow knows when it's about to rain, a bird knows which way south is ...then it's not even that hard to imagine that a dog can sense what time it is!

Can dogs sense stuff that humans can't?
When I was a little girl, my three cousins whose father had just died in his sleep stayed with us for a couple of days. One of them was sleeping with me in my room on a bunk bed situated against the windows from which you can look out and see whoever's outside door. On the first night, I was awakened by a continuous, muffled-sounding knocks on the door at the same, our dog was barking relentlesstly at the door. I got up and peeped through the window.....and there was no one there 😱 I ran back to bed and hid under my blanket. I was too terrified to even wake my cousin.
The dog kept barking and the knocking stopped...
The next day, I told everyone what had happened and they thought I was just trying to scare them...

When I was young, me and my sisters were watching tv with the neighbor because my 3rd sister passed and her wake is held at home, our dog came with us in the neighbor's house. Dog is not allowed because they have dog also, so we asked her to go home and come back at 8pm. That time the series we are watching will finished. Our neighbor heared the dog barking, when she looked at the clock it was 8pm. She was amazed.

My mum's dog always knows time for food. We are a family out of routine. He knows 4 o clock is food time and will always go to the person that feeds him regularly. If the person is not around, he will wait till they're home then follow them around until he gets his food then he goes back to ignoring us.

My dog, who’s 15, seems to know whenever it’s 5pm (dinner time) every single day no matter what we are all doing even if she’s out at the park at 5pm, she’ll still be like “I know it’s dinner time”

They indirectly know time. Sun rising and setting, common sounds of humans, alarm clocks, and outside noise. Additionally, they see humans do daily routine things and can depict time based on all of this

answer: YES! Work from home, and at about 4-5 PM, my dog - very quiet - but he starts getting restless, paces - sits at a door - staring at me (as I always FEEL him in the corner of my eye), panting - as I am trying to keep focus - and like clockwork - he has me trained on when we go out - cuz I want that guilt off my mind - and walk him. Daily Event!

you could've just made her to come back home at 3 pm instead of 4 pm and if the dog still follows the procedure of checking on the window in 40 mins after she camed home (meaning 3:40), then obviously the dog cant tell the time and its just a reflex it learned.

@@justanotherone9685 wrong, because it's just a learned reflex. it cant be precisely 40 mins, not even humans can do that (without counting). Read more about learned (aka CONDITIONED) reflexes on dogs and you will understand better. Pavlov did lots of studies about conditioned reflexes on dogs

@@user-yp6kk9lx7k Nice theory. Since it's not proven true, you can't really assert it as right though. Believe it or not, I've heard of Pavlov once or twice and seen his studies. The video was about the phenomenon of dogs possibly being able to have some idea of time. I don't really think it's rational or scientific to say that just because a human can't do something, another species of animal can't as well. Regardless of it being conditioned to check, it obviously has some awareness of the passage of time, as it's always at least around 40 minutes and not usually way off, from what was seen in the video

I think its not the sense of smell. They just feel it and the brain tell it to them "its time".
If you're familiar to the story of the loyal Japanese Dog "Hachi"..
The dog spend his whole life waiting to his owner at the shibuya station for over 11 years. No one will come, but he keeps doing it in the exact time. 6pm everyday until hachi died.

I remember back when I had to pick my brother up from middle school, there was a little dog that would always run straight to the door the kids came out of, just before the bell rang. She was actually my clock back then, because I knew when she stopped playing, and begging people for pets to head for the door, that meant it was time for my brother to get out. She was always the first one there too, and it always warmed my heart to see her tiny human run straight for her every day, to give her pets and kisses. 💕
