Hiking 120km Across the Dolomites on the Alta Via 1 trail - 4K

- Опубліковано 16 гру 2021
- In August of 2021 I had the chance to hike across the Dolomites - a unique mountain range, that is a UNESCO world heritage, and famous for its towering peaks.
The Alta Via 1, also called Alta Via 1 delle Dolomiti, meaning Dolomite high route 1, is a popular hiking trail crossing the Dolomites starting from the picturesque lake of Lago di Braies, and ending at the city of Belluno in the outskirts of the Dolomites.
This video documents the journey of the 120km trail passing by numerous mountain huts and massive limestone peaks.
Sit back, relax and enjoy this journey into nature!

I really liked the pace and tone of the video. Perfect balance of commentary, story and views.
Thank you! A new interesting hiking video is in the works too, hopefully should be out within a month
Very nice video man! Like the voiceover as well, makes it more personal! :)
Thanks for the comment, I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
I don't want to know how many times you walked back and forth for the shots. Absolutely high quality work here. Bellisimo
Hehe Grazie! And yes, efinitely a little bit of extra walking, but with such beautiful mountains, it's worth the effort :)
@@luboyanev What kind of tent you have here. I see its should be extra light?
@@Stauffenberg359 I was carrying a DCF tarp by zpacks, yes super light and minimal :) Maybe too minimal for the conditions or my skills at that time :D
Hello, I stumbled on your content a little bit ago and wanted to let you know that I respect the work you put into this video. Keep it up, you have some serious potential. To many people give up right before greatness, so keep pushing, you're doing awesome
I really appreciate your comment, it took me a while to respond, but I was in the middle of working on another film where the amount of work can seem overwhelming and your comment helped me to keep putting in the work. So thank you for that!
@@luboyanev I second the sentiment. I've watched a few hiking films and yours are my favourite as they are so well filmed and put together and you let the hike do a lot of the talking!

The way you film and tell the story is incredible. I hope to one day film my walks this way. Congratulations.
Thank you, I am glad I could inspire your creativity! :) Just like hiking, the editing process can be both fun and also could sometimes present its challenges. Have a good time hiking and creating!
I did this hiking Alta Via N. 1 some years ago in the opposite direction. I think this video is one of the best videos on Alta Via delle Dolomiti. Beautiful shots of the mountains and of yourself. My compliments!
Thank you for the kind words! I indeed hiked the Alta Via 1 in the opposite direction from the majority of the people that hike that trail. My original plan was to make like a loop hiking the Alta Via 1 going north and then to hike the Alta Via 2 going south, but in the end I only hiked the AV1. Maybe one day in the future the AV2. Happy hiking!

Thank you! And you're welcome!
Awesome video Lyubo. Thanks for the inspiration. I'm hoping to hike it next September. Packlist now includes Katadyn water filter and good head torch :-)
Thank you! September should be perfect, less people, less afternoon thunder storms and easier to find places in the huts (though still if staying in the huts, it might be a good idea to book a place for the weekend). And btw. my mistake was filling up the water at that water source between Vazzoler and Forzelette on side trail that was closed off with a barrier that I drank the questionable water. Later I saw that there was a big farm higher up with a lot of cows and sheep. The rest of the water sources on the trail that I encountered, especially higher up the mountain were with clean fresh mountain water. But still a good idea to have a water filter just in case. And head torch is a must for the tunnel :)
@@luboyanev Tunnel sounds awesome! Yeah - s*it flows downhill :-)
@@Spottydog2008 haha true! 😄 Happy hiking!
Really amazing video! What is the music at the end of the video? Bulgarian folk music?
May I ask how much did you pay to stay in the rifugios?
Great video, makes it very compelling to hike the Alta Via I.
I must say you're quite fast to do this in six days. My planning this summer will be eight days starting from Lago di Braies. You're also packed quite light. In my previous trekkings I carried a backpack of 18 to 20 kilos. I don't know what the weight was of your backpack, but it seems considerably less.
Thank you! You are right, this was the first hike I did transitioning to a frameless backpack, and having a lighter load. (There is a link with all the gear with how much it weighs in the description)
Over the years with every hike, I have been continually trying to see what works, what is truly necessary, and what items I could do without. So I think the lighter backpack definitely helped with hiking for longer without feeling so tired on the Alta Via 1. I was actually done already by 11am on the last day :)
If you could manage to bring your pack weight down while still being comfortable (or if you are even more committed you could also create a lighterpack link where you weigh every item that you carry and post it on reddit/r/ultralight, where others can give tips on what could be changed) it could improve the general walking experience. But overall I think you will be able to hike it without much issues in 8 days (weather permitting).
If you are staying in huts everyday, you probably won't have to carry a tent and sleeping pad, and also much less food, so the pack should already be quite lighter.
Hope you have a great experience out there!
Thank you for your comment, google translate helped me understand :) And yes definitely a bad place to fill up on water without filtering... 😄 Happy hiking!
🙌🙌🙌

Great again, all you filming is so inspiring and will stands for long, well done bro, well done again .. BTW You know eating pasta with bread in Italy is illegal :) hahaha .

Good video my friend. We are looking into doing this but we live in California so it’s a big thing to get there and just want to research it it see if it’s worth it
So many incredible places in the Alps, I can see how it can be tough to choose :) Happy planning and happy trip!
Hi Lyubo, very nice video! I’m thinking of doing the route as well from south to north, hoping it’ll be a bit quieter. Was it easy to find the route this way, does it make a difference? Thanks Lynn
Thank you!
I didn't have any trouble with route finding. I did have an offline map and a GPX file of the route on my phone that I could double check if I was ever in doubt (for example at a trail junction). On my phone I also had photos of the cicerone guidebook (though it was slightly tricky as it is described from north to south, but not a big problem).
And regarding people, yes I think you'll definitely have less people going south to north. I don't think I saw a single person hiking from south to north, but you'll see most of the hikers going north to south. If I have to guess I typically saw about 5-20ish AV1 hikers a day, and many day hikers especially on the weekends near some of the hotspots like Coldai, Citta di Fume, Lagazuoi, Fanes/Pederu. But often time as soon as you're a few kilometers/miles from the trailheads, the trail becomes a lot more quiet again. I hope that helps. Happy hiking!
Great video!! 👍 subscribed! 🔔
Thank you! Welcome to the channel. A new interesting hiking video is also in the works :)
We want more videos. ❤
Hehe, thank you, there should be a new hiking film from a trip to Norway coming in a few months, stay tuned :)
Incredible video!
Im probably going to hike it this summer towards september. One question, do you think it doable without staying in rifugi and only using a tent?
Hey, so the trail passes through national parks in the stages 1-4, 9, 10, and 11 where camping is not allowed, but people have definitely hiked the trail without staying in the huts. Some huts may allow you to set up camp near them. There is a good blog post on the trail with useful information on thehikinglife .com. You may also consider getting the guidebook. Happy hiking and enjoy the Alta Via 1!!
Amazing video! I'm planning on hiking the Alta Via 1 next month! I'm curious if there's any difficulty as you hiked the trail from south to north (which is opposite to what people usually do I think?) Thanks in advance!
Thank you! And yes, I chose to hike the AV1 in the opposite direction as my plan was to hike both the AV1 and AV2 and almost make a loop, for an easy access to and from Venice airport. At the end I only hiked the AV1, but the transportation back was not complicated. One difference in hiking in opposite direction as I did, is that the trail starts with bigger climb, but it was not an issue for me. Happy hiking in the Dolomites!
@@luboyanev Wow that's a quick response! Thanks for the info!
Very inspiring! Btw, how did you make this brilliant video? Did you travel with a cameraman, or did you set up the camera before walking across it?
Thank you very much! And all filmed by myself. I carry a small tripod and for many of the shots I would set up the camera on the ground or rocks or any other place around using the tripod :)
this was so wonderful! Did you hike in beginning, middle or late August?
Thank you! I hiked from August 5th to August 10th. Happy hiking!
question: is that backpack the only luggage you brought with you on your trip, or did you have another bag that you stored somewhere while you hiked?
Hey, that was actually the only luggage I carried. Note that gas canisters are not allowed. In the past when I used to carry a larger backpack with more heavy gear I have had a duffel bag where I would put the backpack in and store the empty duffel in a hostel or helpful couch surfers while I was out and hiking.
How many days did you passed in the mountains? And how much manu did you spend? I want to go too!!!!
Hey, I hiked this trail in about 5 and a half days. Usually people would hike it in 8 to 10 days. And one can easily spend about 40-70euro a day for sleeping and food. If you carry most of your food and shelter it could be done for cheaper.
How did you organise this? I'd love to do it without a group tour!
Hey, from what I remember, I saw a few blog posts about the hike online (especially the ones from thehikinglife), I got the guide book, and I joined a few facebook groups about the hike. The I planned the travel days and got an offline map and gpx file of the trail, figured out how much food I would need, and went for it. Many people would also typically book a bed in the huts, but I managed to hike without any bookings in advance.
Nice video mate, how much money did you spend for sleeping in that houses?
Thank you! And for sleeping, I only stayed in 3 huts and it was varied, about 30-40 euros without food and 70-80 with food, 15euro for the campground in Palafavera. In some of the places (I think in Rif. Col Gallina - before Lagazuoi), the only option was to book bed with dinner and breakfast, while others had the option to only book the bed, or bed and dinner..
How many days u was walking there ?
Hey, It took me about 5 and half days of walking, I finished at around 11am on the 6th day, but I think it takes longer for most people that hike the AV1. Happy hiking!
What camera did you shoot this on?
Hey, I used the Sony A7s III, you can see the full gear list in the description of the video. Cheers
Hi.Can i hike the Dolomites in early June?
Hey, it can be done, but depending on where you might have to go across some snow sections. It would be a good idea to check on satelite imagery or the webcams of huts or ski resorts to see how the conditions are. Happy hiking!

what's the last songs name?
The very last song (from the credits) is called Sulla panchina by Bottega baltazar. And the song at the end of the final day is called Far by The Hunts. Both songs are from Arlist.io, but I saw that the song from The Hunts is also on youtube. Cheers!
I thought camping was banned in the Dolomites??
Yes. In the Alps they differentiate between camping and bivouacing. Camping meaning to stay at the same place for multiple nights, and bivouac camping - setting up camp at night and leaving early in the morning. In the National parks in the Dolomites multiday camping is not allowed, and bivouacing may be allowed at designated places near the huts. Outside the national parks bivouacing is ok, but still have to follow leave not trace principles and other rules that they might have in the area. The Alta Via 1 trail passes through national parks in stages 1 to 4, as well as 9, 10 and 11. The location where I camped was on stage 7. I hope that information is useful, feel free to do a further research if you plan on visiting the area, both the guidebook and online resources would have good practical advice. Best of luck
Always filter ☝🏻😜
Hehe, so true! Lesson learned..! Maybe.. 😝 Only time will tell :) Happy hiking!
It might be more fun to do these hikes through the Dolomites with a female hiking partner.
Hey, you may be right. I do enjoy hiking with other people, just it's not always easy to find other people to join me on these adventures.
Bruh why in the world would you bring a BeFree with a super fast flow rate if you are not going to filter the water anyway? Cringed so hard xD
Hahah good point! Before that encounter I think I didn't filter a single time on this trail and I mostly used my other plastic bottle, so I just used the befree as a water container that night and didn't even think about filtering.. lesson learned... water below cow pastures - not fun..
Question on the campsite at Pala Favera. Did you just turn up or did you have to book in advance? How much was a pitch? Is there a supermarket or restaurant there? If there's anything you can remmeber please say. I'm planning on this as one of the tent stops for my AV1 rip in 23 (SOBO)
Hey, I may be responding too late, but I just showed up and there was only 1 camp spot left. It was a weekend, so the hut was fully booked (and quite overpriced) and the campsite was pretty full too. I think it was around 15euro for a pitch back in 2021. And there was a little mini market and a restaurant nearby. Happy hiking!
