As a LOTR book nerd, the escalation of confusion over the pathless forest, Old Man Willow, Tom Bombadil, and then the Barrow-downs was absolutely hilarious to watch.
Which some of those are strange to be confused over tbh, Tom is a huge meme and the barrows downs are in quite a few LOTR games.
That was my second favorite part of the book next to the Mines of Moriah.
@@A_Black_Sheep94 are Barrow-downs the place they get sword or swords from?
@MICHAŁ KOZERA I'm not sure if the place Aragorn rescues them from in the movie is supposed to be the barrow downs or not there are no wights. If I recall they're armed by the elves once the fellowship is formed.
@@A_Black_Sheep94 You mean Weathertop right? Can you please remind me how they got these swords in book? By defending some wraiths?
Escaping the Dark Riders in this game literally traumatized me as a kid. I had to take constant long breaks because I was so scared.
we had a nightmare of a time escaping the Dark Riders...
@@MindPulp Yup, as a kid it was both too difficult AND horrifying
I THOUGHT IT WAS ONLY ME, I would crap myself whenever I saw them😂🤣
I never got passed that level I had a friend do it for me
If anyone cares the reason the dark riders bit is so awful is because it doesn't use line of sight. The riders just have a circle around them that penetrates walls and any obstacles you might hide behind, and if you enter the circle you fail
Mind Pulp, "Who TF is Tom Bombadil?!" Fans of the book, "The most important character EVER!"
Goldberry: "He is."
Goldberry 😂
Water lillys
Aragorn in the movies: Lay low and be careful who you interact with.
Aragorn in the game: Just running around offending and starting fights with everyone. 😄
Thats how he was in the book too. He kinda challanges the whole Rohirrim Eomer was leading to a fight and tells them only a few of them will return home if they do so when in the movie it was Gimli and Legolas that provoked them. He is not a lil bich and is much more Kingly.
Aragorn: "...horse thief."
Horse Thief: "What?! You gonna call meh a horse thæf?!"
Aragorn: "I already have. Now be gone!"
Tom bombadil is actually quite a big part in the book 😂😂
Nerd 😂
Yes ,an incredibly important part of the story ,I can't understand how they could leave him out of the movies ,he's essential.
@@lazerfluxxy7370 I don’t remember him being essential…? The only time he’s in the story (the Old Forest and the Barrows) was cut from the movies, he has no effect on the plot that I recall beyond that one bit near the beginning of Fellowship.
Edit: Since I’ve needed to clarify myself like 5 damn times further down this comment chain, yes, I know Tom Bombadil saves the hobbits from the Barrow-Wights, and that’s where Merry gets the sword that weakens the Witch-King. However, since the Barrow-sword was cut from the movies, IN THE MOVIES, Tom Bombadil was rendered non-essential.
@@theonegoldengryphon I know,I'm actually making a bit of a joke ,as he is in fact not that important and very much just confuses the reader because he takes the ring and puts it on and shows it does nothing to him, so again ,it really would only confuse the reader.
@@lazerfluxxy7370 but doesn't he give the Hobbits their swords, it's been a long time since reading them. He was honestly one my favorite characters in the book
"Frodo's virginity increased"
That's quite possibly the best sentence to ever exist
I genuinely liked this game back in the day. I got it for PC before I had a PS2 so for a while it was the only LOTR game I had access to. It aged like milk but I'm still nostalgic for it.
Me too. Didn't have a bad cast to it, either. Tom Kane was a good voice for Gandalf, and I could swear I heard Daran Norris as Aragorn.
I remember one time when it crashed. It was about the Hobbit Waterwheel Operative lamenting: "Oh never you mind about working-! Oh never you mind about working-! Oh never you mind about working-!" That is what I remember most.
I also liked the music.
I had it on PC as well, and I remember the levels where you play as Aragorn happening way sooner. Maybe the PC version had the mission order different?
I also liked playing it on PC, probably because I was such a huge Tolkien fan. A friend of mine from our local LOTR gang did not want to play it but already agreed to write an article for “My home gaming computer” magazine (a long vanished magazine every schoolboy with a PC was reading in 2000s in Ukraine). So I told him the game is badly programmed (confirming that with stupid screenshots like Gollum full of arrows who looked like a hedgehog), but actually has some nice vibe that a Tolkien fan can enjoy; he generated some text and it was published…
Me too I loved this game!
At the time it wasn’t really that bad, it just aged very poorly
"How many arrows can one man take in the chest!?" I dunno have you tried asking Boromir?
This whole game is worth it just to see the boys discover the wonders of Tom Bombadil
I think the studio should get credit for imagining this world, in the own vision without being jaded by movie adaptions. It is a book adaption. This is not particularly easy, whereas although EA made definitely better action games, they're copy and pasted digital textures style and music repurposed from 7-8 years of work done by other people(usually the best at their craft like Howard Shore) this was the first attempt at a story adventure game that nobody had tried before, with the addition of the extensive lore of LOTR it was always gonna be different.
I give alot of credit for this game, even if the mechanics are under developed.
includes Nazgul chase, Barrow Wights, Old Man Willow and Tom Bombadil. It is a fairly faithful adaption. Most people look down on this solely because it's not Peter Jackson's.
It's still better than Rings of Power By Amazon.
I actually worked on this game back in the day, these guy's are trashing the PS2 port which SUCKED, not the XBox version we developed. Yes game still sucked but Sony getting involved had a lot to do with that
Thankfully I’m a mature adult who would never look down on it JUST because it wasn’t adapted from the movies. That would be unreasonable and short sighted, I look down on this one because it flat out sucked and was horrendously abysmal to play as a 12 year old!
@@johnhunter8959 wait can you clarfiy the difference? Was it like an origonal splinter cell type deal where xbox had extra content, better loading etc but still essentially the same game or like a star wars force unleashed type deal where there was essentially 3 different games released depending on platform?
Not having anything to do with Peter Jackson is a huge plus.
That’s what I was thinking. The dudes in the video are trashing it but considering that the movies weren’t out as a template, the game is shockingly consistent with the looks of the movies. Bravo to the developers.
I remember saving this game in Moria as I fell off of a bridge with Gandalf, meaning to load my most recent save. Meaning I was forever stuck falling in Moria and having to go all the way back to the beginning. Fool of a took
I did that as a kid and it forever haunted my saves for every game I’ve played
I did a similar blunder on Skyrim. I saved as I died when I was drunk one night and as I save I used to delete all prior saves for some reason so I lost 600 hours like an idiot.
Hahahaha I did the same thing as a kid and started crying when I realized how cooked I was
Something about this story creased me up, likely because I've definitely done this myself. Anyway, thank you for making me genuinely laugh out loud, and I'm sorry this happened to you!
When they said this game was based on the book and not the movie, my first thought was "Ohhhh god....Tom Bombadil is gonna be in this, ain't he? And it's gonna confuse the fuck out of them."
And I was not disappointed! 😂
I mean, yeah, they are pretty uncultured.
@@skizz0phrenia270 Idk, they just haven't ever read the _The Lord of the Rings_ books and have only seen the 3 Peter Jackson films (and maybe the Ralph Bakshi animated film too). Which is the same for many people, so there are certain aspects & characters & side-plots of the saga that they won't know about, as both Bakshi and Jackson omitted Tom Bombadil from the story, as the parts of the story that he appears in are kinda inconsequential and can very easily be omitted without it harming the overall narrative whatsoever. The Tom Bombadil stuff IS kinda frivolous tbh.
U know this game was before the movies

@@OldestOldGregg alright that was great! lets get you back to your room now so you can take your medicine
When I was a kid my mom got me this game on accident after I had wished for LOTR: Return of the King, I have zero regrets.
I still have this game and I thought it was kinda fun. Obviously it hasn’t aged the best but I think it’s kinda charming. It was kinda cool having something that follows the books in a time where movie tie-ins were the norm.
I played this A LOT. I loved it then and I love it now, you can spend HOURS immersing yourself into the world. It’s beautiful dude.
I never played this game. But I find it impressive how they based it from the book!
Same as one of my favourite games from childhood.
I got this game around the same time I got my first copy of Halo 2. Didn't defeat the Fellowship game until around when I read the trilogy. I genuinely love this game so much.
Yeah, this game is not awful. They're just pooping on it because it looks awful.
feels good that i am not the only one. loved it as a kid
Tom Bombadil is arguably the most powerful creature in the LOTR canon, and his power of singing is based on Väinämöinen, who is the main character of the Finnish national epic Kalevala, which Tolkien was very fond of.
Kalevala is Swedish.
@@mattiassvanberg8292 No, it is the national epic of Finland.
@@casualsuspect9878 I know. I was kidding. It wasn't funny.
@@mattiassvanberg8292 Okay dokay. :D
There is absolutely zero lore to suggest Tom is an extremely powerful being, people just like to pretend he's some being greater than the Valar because Tolkien made him an enigma.
8:48 just killed me with laughter.
So there's just this random guy named Robin, who apparently knows Frodo, and he's randomly getting attacked by a wolf, and the wolf literally mauls to death this guy that we've known for like thirty seconds, and Frodo just has no reaction to this, and the wolf just exits stage right immediately after. And during all of this the Ringwraiths are attacking. Tolkien wishes he wrote this scene lmao
And Robin is once of the constables who has been sent to *protect the Shire from volves!*
Robin...this must be...Robin Smallburrow :):
"Sam had been looking the Shirriffs up and down and had spotted one that he knew. 'Hey, come here Robin Smallburrow!' he called. 'I want a word with you.'
With a sheepish glance at his leader, who looked wrathful but did not dare to interfere, Shirriff Smallburrow fell back and walked beside Sam....
'Look here, Cock-robin!' said Sam. 'You're Hobbiton-bred and ought to have more sense, coming a-waylaying Mr. Frodo and all. And what's all this about the inn being closed?'
'They're all closed,' said Robin. 'The Chief doesn't hold with beer. Leastways that is how it started. But now I reckon it's his Men that has it all. And he doesn't hold with folk moving about; so if they will or they must, then they has to go to the Shirriff-house and explain their business.'"
Never expected this small obscure side character to appear in the games :).
"'You ought to be ashamed of yourself having anything to do with such nonsense,' said Sam. 'You used to like the inside of an inn better than the outside yourself. You were always popping in, on duty or off.'"
@@fantasywind3923 Are you telling me the rando who gets merced by a wolf is an established character
@@deen7530 if his name is Robin Smallburrow he might be :) also he is supposed to be the Shirriff which in Shire are the closest thing to police/guards 'justice system' :) though Shirriffs as is said in book:
"The only real official in the Shire at this date was the Mayor of Michel Delving (or of the Shire), who was elected every seven years.... [The] offices of Postmaster and First Shirriff were attached to the mayoralty, so that he managed both the Messenger Service and the Watch. These were the only Shire-services....
The Shirriffs was the name that the Hobbits gave to their police, or the nearest equivalent that they possessed. They had, of course, no uniforms (such things being quite unknown), only a feather in their caps; and they were in practice rather haywards than policemen, more concerned with the strayings of beasts than of people. There were in all the Shire only twelve of them, three in each Farthing, for Inside Work. A rather larger body..., was employed to 'beat the bounds', and to see that Outsiders..., did not make themselves a nuisance."

Are you talking about? This is exactly word for word from the book
This was a pretty fair game . It captured the mood of the Shire well enough.Tom Bombadil is a very important character in the LOTR.

Tom Bombadil couldn't show up in the movies because he was too busy signing deals with the hottest record companies
I played this, and actually enjoyed it. Back then, we wanted to see middle-earth and had very few options aside from some poorly made games and cool art work. We took what we could get.
Please do a complete walkthrough of this 😂 I know it would be painful for you both but it’s so entertaining and funny hearing your humour 😂
They need to get to the last level, so that they’ll have access to the most powerful weapon in the game… A fish.
I’m not joking.
16:02 OH I REMEMBER THAT PART IN THE BOOK! You know when Frodo falls a meter has a sudden heart attack and DIES! (By the hands of THE MUCK THAT IS NOT ALLOWED)
For real that line had very "AI generated Story" vibes. Like that Harry Potter one.
I really want You guys too do a full play through of this game cause this was hilarious
They playing only for likes.
I remember playing this game. Although it has its issues, I enjoyed the experience of playing it and was genuinely disappointed upon hearing the sequels got cancelled. I think for me, the thing I liked about the game was that it attempted to take you on the journey of going through the story of The Lord of the Rings, giving you time to explore locations like The Shire and Moria. The official tie-in games that came out with the films are good and great fun to play, but they tend to put more focus on combat and mass battles
I remember playing this as a kid, and it was ridiculously difficult
I THOUGHT IT WAS ONLY ME😅
Haha same I didn’t get past the night time forest level
Same
Dead Robin's eyes will watch your sins. (But in all seriousness that scene was creepy as heck.)
I remember spending almost 20 minutes whacking a cave troll with a sword and fire bolts, assisted by the entire Fellowship, only for Aragorn to bitch at me about being overwhelmed; and the cave troll was the only enemy alive.
I like that this game follows the book much more closely than other LOTR games do. It would be nice to have a newer version that does the same, only in a far more accomplished way!
They absolutely need to make more Lotr games based on the book. The movies haven't really been the inspiration for the games since the mid 2000s, so a game based on the books wouldn't be out of place. The new Return to Moria isn't based on the films and it allows for a much more colourful and fun game.
As someone who was NOT a Lord Of The Rings fan in the 2000's this games will haunt my dreams until the day I die.
How could you not be an LOTR fan
@@ogbee9690 I didn't really care for it I was more into scifi than fantasy as a kid but I did watch the movies and they're alright

tolkien was a moron for that lol
To this day I feel they commited sin by not including Tom Bombadil in the movies

@@leandromiguel4481 I don't think I've heard a single LOTR fan say that making them longer would be a bad thing lol
@@woolfieMcP I didn't say it would be bad thing , plus the millions it cost of the studio to add more stuff , to find the right person , makeup etc
@@woolfieMcPI’m a LotR fan and making them longer would be worse
@@lazerfrogstudiosyeah I agree tbh. The films had to get cut down by nearly an hour each already, adding more would cause the films to be completely incoherent with the theatrical limitations of the time.
Remember that 3 hour movies weren't common in 2001, hell 2 hour films were rare. The fact the films even came out in theatre at their length was surprising.
The books have soooo many songs. It’s even worse in the Silmarillion, everyone always sings.
I do find it a little funny that despite being being based on the books to ape on the release of the first film, some of the devs & actors that worked on this game would later end up working on the EA movie tie-in games & even the LEGO & Middle-Earth games!
Listen, this game is no Two Towers or Return of the King, but as a kid, this game was my favorite in that it let you explore the Shire, Bree, Moria and you got to play as Frodo and Gandalf. As a kid I liked the music, I like the ability to control the camera, and it was the first of these games that let you play as Gandalf.
It’s easy to look back and be like Return of the King is so much better, but when this game came out and it was this and the Two Towers, this game had some charm to it. It’s not like we knew games like Return of the King or Shadow of War would ever come out. To call it the awful game that nobody played is unfair to the time it came out in. This was the style of games back then, and for what it was back then, it wasn’t terrible.
I get where you are coming from and your video is some good work, but dang the past gets shit on a lot! Hahaha!
I loved this game when it came out. As you said we didn't have many options of exploring middle earth in videogame format. Don't get me wrong the movie games were really fun to play too but this game scratched the itch those didn't.
@@AZodiacCancer exactly that!
Tom Bombadil is in the books. Some believe he is an ancient demigod because he is immortal and is no affected by the Ring, but he refused to help destroying the Ring because he is a hippie.
I'll have you know I loved this game as a boy. It was atmospheric and captured the ambience of the first book. It doesn't have to be perfect to me, but as young it was a good level of adventure and difficulty.
I remember playing this as a super young kid. I’ve NEVER seen past the shire because I’d spend forever exploring it and then get terrified of the night riders. Thanks for showing me how hilarious it was. 😂
I remember getting my dad the two towers game and I got terrified to the point of never trying it again 😅
Nobody knows who Tom Bombadil is. He's a mystery character that Gandalf seems to know but his exact nature is shrouded in myth.

The moment you brought up both The Two Towers & The Return Of The King video games, I shed a tear of nostalgia
I applaud this game. It takes skill to turn the Barrow Downs, one of the scariest and most badass locations Tolkien ever wrote, into a coma inducing fogfest. I had this game, couldn't make it past the first hour because of just how much nothing really happens

This was the first game my parents bought with my xbox for christmas. I didn't have any other games so I had no choice but to play this. I rage quit pretty early out of frustration with the ringwraith stealth mission, but I eventually came back and finished it. As a fan of the first movie which got me to read the books, I was able to have fun with it despite the obvious flaws.

It's nice to see what else happens, since our copy growing up was glitched so you couldn't save after you cross the bridge to leave the Shire after avoiding the first Ringwraith. It would say it saved, but when you died or stopped playing and reloaded, it would go back to the bridge in the Shire lol. We got to meet Tom Bombadil at least but being kids, we got annoyed eventually and played the other Lord of the Rings games that we could save 😂
Tom has got to be my favorite character in the book too, literally the best explanation for him is he’s an old man who lives in the woods with his trophy wife and gives no shits whatsoever, enough so where the Ring doesn’t affect him
Would you believe that I own this game, and was very confused that it didn't follow the events of the movie as I remembered it 😅 I couldn't understand all the "new" characters I encountered, or the strange ways that I solved the problems. I didn't realise that it wasn't based on the movies at all, I just assumed I remembered the movies wrong 😂😂😂
So nostalgic. lots of fond memories of this game. Can't for the life of me remember ever playing any of that between the wolves in the shire and the barrow downs though.wierd 🤔
The one rule of middle earth...don't fuck with Tom Bombadil
