Gimli in the books really wasn't comedic relief. He was more of a warrior poet. The one comedic thing that they did keep was the keeping score of how many enemies they kill between Legolas and Gimli.
There's a key part of the development of their friendship in the book that isn't in the film. The conversation about the glittering caves, where Gimli talks about preserving and enhancing the natural beauty of a cave system the way the elves would a forest, when Legolas assumed dwarves would want to mine it out. I get why it doesn't fit in the movie but it really shows that side of Gimli well and brings them together over something more than fighting together
The momentousness of Galadriel giving him the locks of her hair, while retained in the film, is easy to miss as well, as it was painted in somewhat comical color. In the First Era, when Fëanor the master smith demanded one lock from Galadriel as to remake the Trees of Light Melkor had despoiled (by urging Ungoliant to suck light from them) Galardiel, foreseeing Fëanor's arrogance and jealousy & the ruin he was to bring onto _Noldor,_ refused. Gimli, however, did not yearn her locks for their utility and power, but only as token to remember her beauty. His sincere request moved Galadriel, who then did the unthinkable by giving Gimli not one but three locks of hers. Gimli, a dwarf, probably oblivious, was granted something the greatest artisan of elven history was denied, since his request was without greed for power. I think this is well tuned with Tolkien's overall message.
My mom let me get these games at family video when they were on sale after I had consecutive quarters of good grades in elementary school… best freakin reward I’ve ever gotten
Sauron doesn't die when the ring is cut from his finger but his physical form we see in the movie is destroyed. His spirit lives on after the ring was cut from his finger.
Sauron put a good amount of his power into the Ring itself, when Isildur cut the Ring from Sauron's hand he couldn't continue to remain in the physical realm. That 'explosion was just him escaping in his real form, a Spirit
We got this back Christmas 2002 and it was so awesome. Came with a PS2 bundle and it was still the best christmas gift my brother and I got. So classic.
To provide some context on things: Sauron started life as a bodiless spirit before the world was created, alongside a whole bunch of others. theyy can survive having their bodies destroyed, it's just unpleasant.. Unless apparently they decide to be super evil or something. Not quite sure if that was a problem for Sauron in either book or movie form before the ring was made, but I lean towards it being so. once he has the One Ring idea he pours a bunch of himself into it. This in turn somehow amplifies his already considerable power, though it's not an end all be all. He's by no means invincible with the Ring, and can be defeated with it. Which happened twice to his armies whenever Numenor AKA Atlantis AKA where the ancestors of the Dunedain (Aragorn and Boromir and other Gondorians) are from. After tricking Numenor into suicide by God, he managed to escape back to Mordor only to find that Gondor had popped up on his doorstep. This made him very cross and started a lengthy "Get off my lawn" war that culminates in the Last Alliance of Men and Elves - pretty much everyone who hated him versus all his servants and armies. Durin's Folk aka Khazad-dum aka the future Moria even pitched in with a troop of Dwarven warriors. With the vicious battle at Dagorlad (the Dead Marshes in the future, where the ghost lights are), Sauron ended up trapped for ten years inside Barad-dur despite repeated attempts by him to get the Last Alliance to fuck off. Until at last he manages to escape and head for Mount Doom. There he gets cornered and it is here that the movie prologue occurs. Now, here is where things get interesting. In the movie, Sauron of course has his finger sliced off, and explodes without the One Ring. Or something. BUT, in the book it's not as clear as to how Sauron is defeated, only that he kills Elendil (and also the High King Gil-galad by burning him alive) in the process. It's implied that he is basically killed the old fashioned way, in a sense. It is then that Isildur takes the Ring as repayment for the many personal losses he suffered in his long battle with Sauron, still by cutting the ring off. Elrond and another elf are both present for this, being the only two besides Isildur to be able to stand up to Sauron along side the high kings. They advised him to destroy it, and he says no. None of them go to mount doom in this part. the end result is the same - Sauron loses ring, but survives because the Ring isn't destroyed. Orcs ambush Isildur's entourage and slaughter them. Isildur dies, ring is lost.
The fact that they keep calling Aragorn "Eragon" without ever once acknowledging it is one of the most low-key hilarious jokes of them playing these old Lord of the Rings games.
The ring being cut off doesn’t kill him, it destroys his physical form. He made a gamble that by putting part of himself in the ring he’s able to amplify his power. It also gives him the set back of having his physical form tied to the ring.
@kamudo999 The ring gave HIM power he didn't give IT power. The ring was connected to him and with the ring cutoff so was his tether, he bonded himself with it kinda like selling your sell to the devil. Lots red writing
Dude, you just triggered a core childhood memory and answered a question I've had since then. I used to have a set for the LoTR hex figures. Came with a landscape board and probably 50-100 pieces or something? All I remember doing with it was lining all the good guys and bad guys up and being like, "Dude the orcs are so fucking cool." Never knew they were called hex figures, though; always called it, "That LoTR boardgame thing-y." Grammar edit:
The middle earth battle sets were my favs, I had a few gifted when I was younger and was amazed with the detail, the bridge of khazdum with the balrog and gandalf were the ones I always was looking for but ebay they are around 100$ massive wave of nostalgia
Y'all should consider playing the Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance games for the PS2. While they have very little in common with their isometric cousins, they are still a pretty good time and can be played co-op.
I played those games for the first time like a year ago and still really enjoyed them. I played Dark Alliance 1 and 2 which were on the Switch and I played the GBA version too 😂GBA version is surprisingly pretty close to the PS2 one it just has worse graphics and some of the fights are easier.
the cutscene for the mission with the wraiths in the beginning of the game, in the cutscene, sam yells "FRODO!" but it sounds like he says "STRODO!" and its hilarious.
for a video game note, the Return of the King game has co-op! It's done in an oldschool LEGO and such style where the screen is shared by both players.
Isn't the game old enough where it's more accurate to say Lego copied them? ROTK came out in 2003, the Lego games that everyone knows about started in 2005. Though I think ROTK got it from ... Gauntlet? Which was more an arcade game series than a console/PC thing.
3:49 is actually quite an interesting question and a major fuck up of the movie. In the lore Sauron fights Elendil and Gil-galad at the same time. They both die in the process but they are still able to incapacitate and damage Saurons physical form. Sauron is overthrown and weakened which enables Isildur to cut Ring of Saurons hand with the broken Narsil. Saurons spirit flees after that, vanishing his body. There is no explosion but it's more cinematic I guess. In the movie Saurons just yeets Elendil with his mace, instantly killing him, there's no Gil-galad (just a few shots of him but not fighting Sauron directly) and Sauron extends his hand like an idiot so that Isildur can conveniently cut it off. I assume that Peter Jackson wanted to imply that Sauron was about to burn Isildur with his hand like he supposedly does with Gil-galad in the books but it just doesn't work in the movie for me, like Sauron exposes his biggest weakness just like that and Sauron is not an moron, he's actually a very cunning intellectual in the books, arrogant but crazy resourceful, cunning and NOT an idiot who would go down like that... You guys should check out what Sauron does in the first, second and third age of Middle-earth, he has a very vast history, from being the right hand man of Melkor (the ACTUAL dark lord and primary antagonist in Tolkiens work), to his final defeat at the end of the War of the Ring. After his defeat in the prologue of the Fellowship of the Ring he actually regains a physical body, Gollums describes him as some demonic entity with nine fingers. After the destruction of the Ring he is nothing more than a cloud that coukd cause you a depressing thoughts. As a Maiar he technically can't die so his spirit lingers on. The burning eye on top of Barad-dûr is actually an invention of Peter Jackson, too which I absolutely love. In the books the burning eye is the symbol of the Orcs and Uruks of Mordor. FYI, I love the movies, they are my all time favorite movies but they still screw up in them.
the way this game is set up is that Aragorn was the jack of all trades, Gimli was a tank, and Legolas is the fast ranged fighter. Gimli unfortunately suffers from being slow compared to the other two, which lets enemies smack him around. The hitstun is real. You're also meant to replay levels as the other two to level them up. There's no shared moves in this game, while in Return of the King there are. They cost more but they unlock moves for EVERYONE as they level! You can also unlock instakill attacks in both games. They require a button sequence but they're insanely powerful.
??????????????????????? What the hell are you talking about? All of them all fought the same lol. There is zero mechanical differences between the characters. The only thing that changes is flavor in weapons That's also not true for Return of the King either. Time to do a retrospect
I must have spent 3-4 months real time trying to get out of that first dungeon room with the tomb and giant. Probably took me about a year to even get that far. The two towers and prince of Persia sands of time where two games I really loved but was very very bad at as a child
Return of the king is such a nostalgic ps2 game for me. I played the crap outta that game when I was little. That one mission with that huge battle at the beginning was always my favourite. I’d love to see you guys play that. Also a very challenging game and little to no checkpoints.
Loved this game back when it came out. Not sure if this was a secret, but you can move the right stick around to fight. You don't have to button mash your way through combat. Eventually, you will use a combo.
While their are some large differences, I always explain it like this: The One Ring is like somewhat like horcrux from the harry potter universe.. You can kill Sauron's body over and over but until The One Ring is destroyed his spirit will find a way to survive. His spirit is linked to The One Ring.
PSA: If you loved the lord of the rings hex game it got bought by Games Workshop and was turned into an army based skirmish game Edit: it's called Middle Earth Battle Strategy Game
Quickest way to kill the big sword uruks is to use a bane move that you unlock. It’s like a perry and instakill counter attack, and it automatically makes you go into perfect mode.
The reason the holding sword move did nothing to Lurtz is because you did it too late he was already in his next animation. It actually does a ton of damage if you do it while his sword is still stuck 😂. Love the vid guys this and ROTK are classics!
16:38 "Yeah, you've cracked the code on this guy" - dies immediately 19:14 "I know what to do!" - dies immediately But it's great that you're revisiting these LOTR classic games :D!
Isildur cuts the ring from his already dead body. Its in Silmarillion so I guess Isildur had an epic fight and won, where Gilgalad and Elendil both dies.
I believe in the books it was actually Gil-Galad (an elven king) and Elendil (badass numenorian) who defeated Sauron but also died in the process. Isildur then cut the ring from Saurons hand after he was defeated.
This unlocked a core memory for me. I knew he was called Lurtz because I had this sticker book thing when I was little of all the LOTR characters, you could buy the packs of stickers from a newsagent and try and collect them all like Pokemon cards lmao Good times Also never forget when Jerma played this game and spent like 3 hours on the Helms Deep level. It's kinda validating to watch grown adults struggle with these games as much as I did when I was like 9 lol
These games were my childhood. I remember there was a leaderboard for the online portion. It was always topped by a guy named Sadistik. Used to play with him a bit. Cool guy, good times.
I’ve been watching you guys for awhile now.. your videos are the only form of dopamine i get on this platform.. i hate to admit this but every time i see a post from ya’ll a smile runs across my face. Keep up the good work guys! You are both truly gems.
In the intro Sauron poured all his power into the one ring to rule them all along with his spirit. His body during that battle was just basically a husk and the ring is giving him all the power. So as it was cut off it surged causing his husk to disintegrate and explode and thus the ring survives so does the spirit, hence why it betrayed Isildur and why it’s referred to have a “will” of its own. Virginity has served me well finally.
I can’t overestimate how many times my dad and I played through this game back in the day. I had to hold myself back from yelling “JUMP BACK” on the troll fights lmao Love y’all’s videos 🫡
You need to make Barnyard part 2. You said if it reached 10K likes you'd make a part two. It has over 100K but still no part two. Please pleeeeeeeeeeeeease make part two.
I absolutely love the banter you guys have. I discovered your channel a week or so back and have been binge-watching everything. Amazing stuff lads, thanks so much!
The way it’s been described to me is the ring basically acts as a Tether between the realm that his spirit lies and middle earth. So that’s why whenever someone puts the ring on they disappear this is why, when Frodo wears the ring he sees the Naz ghoul for what they truly are. Gandolf and the other wizards are similar in that aspect as well, which is how Gandolf essentially dies and comes back but it takes him a while to remember himself as Gandolf the Grey
This game is both peak and also my first Mandela Effect. I could have SWORN it was co-op as a kid, but it’s always been single player. So weird. My brain definitely crossed it with the Return of the King game.
I think these guys should be Shadow or Mordor/ Shadow of War since those games are the best of all the LOTR games as well of the legendary Nemesis System
If the Phantom Menace on PS1 could be given a PS5 port, then I see no reason why Two Towers and Return of the King can't be given ports either. Or better yet, we could hope that these games could be remade with updated graphics and gameplay, maybe even let us play more characters in Two Towers, I still remember how bummed I was when I couldn't play as Gandalf, especially since he was my favorite character in those movies.
My main complaint with the movies, is the infinite ammo glitch that every archer uses. Additionally, I always forget how difficult video games were on the 6th Gen consoles.
I use to replay this game from start everytime i played it as a kid. Because we did not own a memory card at the time for our ps2. I remember i was really good at both games.
IDK about the movies, but in the books he is actually killed fighting the king of the elves and the king of men (isldurs dad) but they both die in the effort. Isildur then comes upon the scene and cuts the ring off his finger to keep as a trophy. So he was already defeated.
Appreciate this vid; I always hear people reminiscing about the RotK game - which was obviously fantastic - but they often forget this equally GOATed game
I grew up playing this game on the ps2 and got so excited when I was able to get a hand on The Return of The King loving it even more than the first game being able to play with even more characters
The fight against the cave troll had me in a headlock for months before I finally beat it when I was younger lmao I’m pretty surprised you guys beat it on your first try 😂

A "Max Meltdown" is so enjoyable..... because it's so relatable. 😆
Isildur cuts the ring from his already dead body. Its in Silmarillion so I guess Isildur had an epic fight and won, where Gilgalad and Elendil both dies.
This was one of my favorite games as a kid. Would love a remastered version to play through again for the nostalgia.
I believe in the books it was actually Gil-Galad (an elven king) and Elendil (badass numenorian) who defeated Sauron but also died in the process. Isildur then cut the ring from Saurons hand after he was defeated.
This was my first Lord of the Rings games and I loved it. Thanks for the flashback!
This game was such a huge part of my childhood, it will forever be an OG
This unlocked a core memory for me. I knew he was called Lurtz because I had this sticker book thing when I was little of all the LOTR characters, you could buy the packs of stickers from a newsagent and try and collect them all like Pokemon cards lmao Good times
Also never forget when Jerma played this game and spent like 3 hours on the Helms Deep level.
WTF, you beat the level and we don't even get to see Eldrond's Swift Terror in action? What a scam! XD
Nneeeerd
I can’t overestimate how many times my dad and I played through this game back in the day. I had to hold myself back from yelling “JUMP BACK” on the troll fights lmao Love y’all’s videos 🫡
The two towers and return of the king were awesome games for their time. The Third Age is still my favorite though.
ROTK was actually a very fun game you could sit down and knock out the entire campaign in an afternoon. Got good reviews too IIRC
So nostalgic. I remember being a child and screaming at the npcs to help . Good times..
Vote for episode 2! You didn't even get to the battle of helms deep, those are like the best levels in the game!
You need to make Barnyard part 2. You said if it reached 10K likes you'd make a part two. It has over 100K but still no part two. Please pleeeeeeeeeeeeease make part two.
That’s a game I played a lot as a kid. It was oddly good for a weird movie
The rising attack should be the first upgrade that you buy for any hero in this game.
the 2011 lego game begs to differ.
i remember absolutely loving this game as a kid. i think i rented it 2-3x from blockbuster
I remember playing The Two Towers alot on the GameCube
I like how at 13:06 the orcs are just standing in the fire killing themselves
Had this game growing up, cool to see it again
This game was how I was first introduced to the world of Middle-earth, so it holds a special place in my heart. Anyway, good video once again! 👍
Day 1 of asking mindpulp to complete Batman and wobin
This has become my favourite video game channel! I love the banter and the random shitty games! Perfect thing to watch before bed to lighten the mood
This is one of the legendary games of my childhood. We constantly replayed this one.
This game is both peak and also my first Mandela Effect. I could have SWORN it was co-op as a kid, but it’s always been single player. So weird.
My brain definitely crossed it with the Return of the King game.
The line about Frodo running around like a little goblin killed me 😂
the need to remake these or upload them to the PS store
I think these guys should be Shadow or Mordor/ Shadow of War since those games are the best of all the LOTR games as well of the legendary Nemesis System
So it allows the enemies to rank up after killing the player, big deal
Finish the two towers and play the return of the king!
Now y’all have to play Return of the King. Loved that game so much growing ip
My main complaint with the movies, is the infinite ammo glitch that every archer uses.
Additionally, I always forget how difficult video games were on the 6th Gen consoles.
Man, this was the first game we got for PS2. It started my love for gaming as well as for LotR.
LOTR Battle for middle-earth has lurtz in it
Appreciate this vid; I always hear people reminiscing about the RotK game - which was obviously fantastic - but they often forget this equally GOATed game
Can you plz play the rest of the haunted mansion game? You just got to a crazy boss battle and the game just gets better and weirder
Watching you guys pick the wrong upgrades and lose the perfect sword before using it hurt my heart
Can't wait for you to cover The Third Age. That was my first experience with LotR _and_ turn-based combat!
I like how they're surprised that Legolas' most effective attack is his bow, despite that being his signature weapon in the movies.
I remember falling down on cliff near Moria with Aragorn in cutscene. Funny stuff. Real classic game.
Sauron poured so much of his power into the ring, so he can't keep his physical form without it
This game was my childhood highlight ! 💥
6:07 the comedy isn't intentional but there are definitely moments of hilarity imo
I remember those hexes they used to sell them in Poundland it was awesome 😂😂
In my opinion the best Lord of the Rings game is The Third Age
the two towers was so good, i spent so much playing it as a kid
I just went to see all 3 extended editions re-released at my theater not too long ago so seeing this video in my feed is a nice treat 😁
They're doing that here soon! ❤
@@greynotgray6808 I highly recommend it 👌
I grew up playing this game on the ps2 and got so excited when I was able to get a hand on The Return of The King loving it even more than the first game being able to play with even more characters
The fight against the cave troll had me in a headlock for months before I finally beat it when I was younger lmao I’m pretty surprised you guys beat it on your first try 😂
