1984. That's the year this song came out, with their second album, "Ride The Lightning". The singer James Hetfield wrote this when the band's equipment was stolen one day and among the stolen goods was an amplifier that belonged to him. It was a very special one, because his mother gave it to him as a last present before she died of cancer. He got so sad and depressed that he wrote this song.

"I wrote the song at a friend's house in New Jersey. I was pretty depressed at the time because our gear had just been stolen, and we had been thrown out of our manager's house for breaking shit and drinking his liquor cabinet dry. It's a suicide song, and we got a lot of flak for it, as if kids were killing themselves because of the song. But we also got hundreds of letters from kids telling us how they related to the song and that it made them feel better."

You probably don't listen to this kinda music, but checkout Sinister's "Cross the Styx". The way they squeeze everything out of riffs is something to behold. The cyclical song structure and reiterating themes among other things is insane.

Other bands can sort of do that too, but with Metallica they can make it all seem like one coherent whole. With other bands it seems more like different song parts smoothly transitioning into each other, but with this band its like you're still in the same musical journey.

This was their last album on an independent label so they didn't have near the access to the best of engineers and producers in the mid 80's and that is what makes this album even more amazing. I personally feel that "Trapped under Ice" is the best song on this album.

killatella90 “Trapped Under Ice” is so good. Personally I feel this song was the best on the album, and frankly of their entire catalog. Even though it’s was such a departure from their main sound at that time. It’s probably because the lyrics resonated with me so much as a sullen, depressed teenager. Second fav off this album would have to be “Creeping Death”.

1984 dude, back in my teenage years when nobody else but metalheads knew who Metallica was, when all us metalheads felt like we were in on some awesome secret that the rest of the world wasn't hip to, "And justice for all" and the song "One" brought Metallica into the mainstream and a lot of fans felt betrayed that Metallica sold out to the corporate world, myself I felt like the world had finally caught up with Metallica and the musical tastes of people began in the 90s to become less of a group mentality, less putting music into neat little boxes of genres, I personally thank Run DMC and Aerosmith for their huge step in the 80s that broke the glass ceiling

  • @clonexx
    @clonexx 5 років тому +58

This is, hands down, one of my absolute favorite songs from them. This got me through so many dark times in my teenage years. If I was feeling like I wanted to hurt myself, this song went on, I’d pick up my guitar and just go. By the time it was over, I’d be ok. This song has so much emotion and meaning to me wrapped up into it than it just being “some song”.
It was made in 1984 and Metallica back then didn’t have access to the best of the best. This was only their second album and it would be another few years before they hit the big time. The reason it’s so polished and clean sounding is mainly because Lars and James are, or at least were back then, absolute perfectionists. Everything had to be perfect and done exactly right and sounding amazing or they did it over. This was True from the playing, to the recording to the mixing and mastering.
BTW, when this album was written and recorded, James and Lars were around 20. Let that sink in....they were 20 years old and writing and performing at that level. It’s mind boggling...
Thank you so much for doing this song, it’s saved my life on multiple occasions....

This music is iconic not just because of the raw sound but because of the storyline imprinted in the song. The balance between melodic and metal is one of the most brilliant i have ever heard. I can't imagine what it is being depressed at the point of suicide, but this music was able to show me the rollercoster that people can achieve when they get to this point in life. The hole time we can SEE and FEEL the struggle and the end is the culmination of an end long desired.
Knowing the background of the music, why was it made or how James was feeling at that time just brings even more feels and emotions.

As others have pointed out, this was 1984, only their second full length album. Also important to point out that they had not yet become the biggest metal band of all time. Their star was rising, sure, but they were far from a household name at that point in their career. Iron Maiden, for example, were much, MUCH bigger stars worldwide at that time.

I've been a Metallica fan for over 30 years and I love watching people get introduced to them for the first time. They are by far my favorite band and it really means a lot to me hearing people appreciate what they've done. You guys obviously know music and like good music. Keep doing what you do.

You guys should listen to the live version of children of the grave on the Randy Rhoads tribute album. One of Randy’s best solos in my opinion especially considering he never liked playing sabbath songs

There is a reason why Metallica, Priest, Rush, etc. Are big time metal bands...glad to see how you grab onto that like we did 30+ years ago. Love seeing you get lost in the solo.

Best Metallica song ever in my opinion (and they have many great songs to choose from). This was on Ride the Lightning from 1984 which was my first exposure to them. So much depth to this song, both musically and lyrically.

Definitely. Orion is their ultimate instrumental, and really showcases Cliff's abilities both on the bass and on the sheet. Burton's bass solo is amazing.

gentlemen, first of all I appreciate that you go outside of your comfort zone and review these. So far as when this was made, the year was 1983. At that point they had no accesss to the best, not yet.

It's probably already been said in comments but I'm not scrolling through almost 3000 comments.......... James wrote this song about how he felt after all of there equipment was stolen on tour i think with Van Halen Just as they were starting to get a name for themselves, I think 1983?. Anyways Eddie Van Halen heard what happened and sent them all brand new equipment................How cool is that???

Infinite Fantasy I’m not the biggest Van Halen fan, but Hit for Teacher has got to be the ultimate hard rock song. The killer drumming and guitar from the VH brothers, the ultimate frontman and controversial (at the time), schoolboy sexual fantasy lyrics. Definitely need to do this one

Gotta disagree yo. Don't get me wrong, it's an incredible live version, but it would be these guys' first intro proper thrash Metallica. The studio version is nuts, but the groove and feel is still perceptible through the wall of noise, better for analysis and reaction
