My animation professor did a lot of animation on the Alvin and the Chipmunks 2, and most of the bad guy chick in Hop. I learned alot about how most of what animators do is doing your best on bad movies to pay bills. I will say that the animation on all of these looks pretty damn good, but the compositing and some vfx really don't blend great, and that ends up making things look bad (not that what they were blending into was great in the first place). But that's not so much on the animation itself, . I mean damn, every one of those damn chipmunk shots took months to animate, with hundreds of iterations. Woof.
Also the animatiors all know what this is, a common animator game is to get as many people together as you can and compete to see who has the lowest rotten tomatoes score to their name. They know. You still knuckle down and do the best job you can anyway, if for nobody else but yourself and your demo reel. and maybe to 'win' the rotten tomatoes game.
Fun fact, the studio that made Hop had only really specialized in super realistic work before, and their riggers could not understand why the animators would want bouncier, more exaggerated and malleable characters. Or at least, they had no idea how to deliver flexable models so they just didn't. He spent most of that production fighting the guy rigging the villian cuz my prof wanted him to do big cartoonish actions and treat him like a two stretchy balls connected to eachother, but just couldn't cuz the model would constantly break. These cartoon chickens were never being built to do cartoonish actions. That odd disconnect of highly restrictive animation put onto extremely cartoonish characters goes a long way to making it feel off, even before you get to akward blending of live action and cg.
A great many people spent years upon years of dedicated schooling, countless nights spent crying over artistic insecurities, braved a job market that will toss you out without warning, being fired and hired and refired, and have accepted professions that nobody will ever notice the good work you do and will always blame you for everything. And they did it all so that they could make Hop. This is the end-point of all of those college panic attacks.
    Making Hop.

This is exactly the sort of thing I fear the most right now as a high-school graduate currently in his gap year.
I want to go into the creative entertainment industries, movies, animation, video games, etc... because I like to be creative, and every other industry doesn't even come close to piquing my interest.
However, as I learn more and more about these industries that seem like a dream come true for me, the less appealing it becomes.
I want to be a part of something beautiful, full of creative passion, like Into The Spider-Verse.
Spider-Verse surprised everyone with how good it was because it was coming from Sony and not Marvel. It is my second favorite animated film of all time, second only to Redline.
The problem is that films like Spider-Verse and Redline are rare due to how the entertainment industry works.
For every Spider-Verse, there is an Emoji Movie, a Smurfs, a Pixels, and a Hop, which are all animated (or at least partly animated) films also published by Sony.
Those terrible pieces of corporate schlock? All of them made WAY more profit than Spider-Verse.
Redline too, an absolute Master-Piece of animation that was the result of *SEVEN YEARS* of *HAND DRAWN* passion and love for the medium, was a total flop at the box office.
So this means that the majority of productions in entertainment is corporate schlock, or even worse, corporate feces (insert picture of Emoji Movie here).
I know it's a tough business, and you need to be strong to survive.
But the problem I'm facing is that I, despite how much I want to just say FUCK IT and try anyways, cannot gather the strength to forge forward if all I can think about is that all of my struggles will ultimately lead up to me working on the next Emoji Movie.
My heart just can't take the possibility of that bleak future.

    • @PuffyBuffy
      @PuffyBuffy 5 років тому +17

ok, before I start what I'm gonna say, I gotta say this:
Spider-Man Into The Spider-Verse DID NOT flop at the box office, if anything it was a HUGE success.
The box office for the movie was around $375.5 million, which might sound low, BUT you gotta keep in mind of the budget.
the budget for the movie was around $90 Million (that's almost Illumination levels of a cheap budget for animation standards)
not to mention the marketing, the total cost would be around $150 Million-$200 Million, but it would STILL be a success because it earned $175.5 Million more than the possible total budget including marketing, plus it was a MASSIVE critical success (which Sony NEEDED after The Emoji Movie) and the fact that it won a FUCKING OSCAR, BEATING 2 DISNEY MOVIES make the movie have more recognition in blu ray sales ON TOP that it's on netflix gives it EVEN more attention, and heck, when the movie was still in theaters, Sony did announce that not only they're working on a Spider-Verse 2 (which is coming out on April 8th, 2022), but it's gonna have a FULL FRANCHISE. From a Spider-Gwen Stand Alone Movie, to a Spider-Verse TV SHOW, to a potential Spider-Ham Short Series, and potential crossovers with the Venom series and the MCU. Plus it earned more money than The Emoji Movie (which earned $217.7 Million, granted most likely alot of the money goes from the viewers who watch it ironically expecting a "The Room" style so bad it's good kind of movie, thanks Jacksfilms) And yes, Spider-verse made more money than Pixels ($244.9 Million), Smurfs The Lost Village ($197.2 Million) and Hop ($184 Million) and that's not even bringing up the merchandise sales because it's Spider-Man and that Post Malone song
as for Redline, it was mostly a Japan only release with a intentional limited american release (as like an event arthouse film), so if that movie bombs, you can mostly blame the japan movie market (even though we actually DON'T know how much money it earned so it maybe made it's money back and didn't flop in the first place and it was potentially forgotten for SOME REASON, many movies that earned so much money eventually get forgotten where even the company themselves forget about them as well. like for example, the Live Action Disney Remakes)
NOW, what I was trying to say: Don't feel discouraged because you would potentially work on a crappy movie, if you want to animate good on a bad movie, then why not use that to your advantage! Put out your all to make a mediocre movie a sight to see! Where you would be the one who would put the diamond in the rough! Plus it could potentially inspire others to create something even better with even the visuals of a bad movie! a big part with the impact of animation is *inspiration, how when one person creates something amazing, alot of other people have that special spark within them! (and it could be any element, from ANY MOVIE) I mean back to the emoji movie, while I don't like the movie at all, there are some elements that I gotta admit I LOVE and to some merit I had some inspiration towards (like some creative ideas they had with the apps, the AMAZING movement direction which is the right blend of organic movements and cartoony movement, and the score, OOOOOOOOOOOOH MAN THE SCORE!)
the point is with all of this, not everything in the industry is black and white, and not everything in there is doom and gloom, like you said: with every emoji movie, there's a spider-verse
but sometimes you gotta make every frame count and unleash your creativity and your all no matter how bad the script is, because potentially, you could make something that would be the best thing to remember and something that could inspire someone! (Plus with all the new people you'll meet that would inspire you, root for you, and be with you no matter what! Heck maybe some of them could lend you onto BETTER movies more often haha!)
I'm sorry if this is going too long, I'm just always 100% hopeful and optimistic and I wanna be a full time movie director in the future! (currently doing great progress into that goal!) and I always wanted to just bring joy, love, happiness, and inspiration to all kinds of people everywhere, to show everyone that you can do anything no matter what! (that is my main goal as a director!) I hate whenever I see people just give up and think bleak of the future, because the future is always what you make it.
sorry sorry I just hope you understand what I mean with all of this! and I hope you potentially have that passion shining again!

      @ConvincingPeople 5 років тому +14

pupyfan69 Yes and no. Easter is fundamentally Passover with a lot of esoteric early Christian and a smaller sampling of Germanic pagan iconography stapled on willy-nilly, but Christmas is *extremely* pagan at its core, being a hybrid of Saturnalia with various Germanic and Celtic winter festivals as co-opted by Christianity and then merged with the Feast of St. Nicholas, which while very much a Christian holiday (Nicholas was one of the architects of the Nicene Creed) was also part of a tradition of saint veneration that goes back to the days of local cults to minor gods common throughout the Roman Empire and, in different ways, the ancient world at large. (Japanese folk Shinto and local variants of Buddhism and Hinduism throughout Asia still maintain this.)

Weird then it happens at the same time the pagans celebrated the fertility goddess Eostre, who according to their myths turned a bird into a rabbit that still continued to lay eggs, but ones as bright and colorful as spring. Leading to their tradition of painting eggs in bright spring colors.
All of which is predated by a spring goddess called Ishatar who's symbols included eggs and rabbits.

Alexander Colefield It's funny, a lot of the seemingly pagan aspects of Easter are actually Christian or even Jewish in origin-unlike with, say, Christmas, which is heavily informed by Roman, Germanic and Celtic Winter Solstice traditions-but actual contemporary Christian accounts such as the works of Bede attribute the *name* of the holiday to Saxon pagans. It's a weird holiday.

I disagree with how you represent holidays in this video. You seem to think most Western holidays are Christian in origin, and we just pretend they aren't to solve the whole "Not everyone is Christian" situation. While in fact most holidays are pagan traditions, and Christians just started to pretend they weren't to solve the whole "God will get angry with you" situation.
This matters, because I don't see the taking Jebus out of Easter thing as much as a corruption of the essence of Easter in order to make money. Instead I think it is a return to the more traditional style of Easter in order to make money.

Not sure if youve explored the prechristian pagan origins of holidays such as Easter. The rabbit, eggs, and "rebirth" or resurrection themes of Easter all come from paganism.

Um, have you actually explored those claims? I've looked up for sources on any pagan easter holidays, non include eggs and definetly no rabbits in their tales, the Egg is actually a medevial Christian tradition, to paint them blood red and to have a lent on eating any, and therm rabbit was literally a recent fairy tale made in the 19th century around. But the idea of rebirth's are prominent in all cultures celebrating around "Easter time" (which is just holidays taking place in spring), and it all has to do with it being the rebirth of plants and stuff, that's all.

@@sebili0n99 uh, bruh. Easter is literally named after the pagen goddess "Easter." Rabbits come from Eostre (sometimes considered the same. Depends on the pagen.) It's a pretty surface, non-obscure level of paganism. :V

It was so glaringly corporate and it seems like the only creative process they had was going off a checklist - and 'pop song because all the popular movies have pop songs' was top of the list.

The opening bit kinda made it sound a touch like these holidays were all Christian from the dawn of time until America's consumerism spat all over 'em. Most of these were old ass Pagan festivals the not-so-ancient Romans hijacked and smothered with Jesus, while the secular variants are really sanitary, consumer-friendly, and exaggerated revivals of the Pagan shit brought on by America's consumerism spitting on them.

Great video overall, however your delivery of Christmas being "an American tradition based around gift giving" severely glossed over how all the elements of Santa, gifts, Christmas tree, etc. are adopted largely from European folklore and pagan traditions.
Another thing, you should look up traditional Nordic custom in Easter celebrations, it's eerily similar to how Americans spend their Halloween! Kids dress up mostly as witches, and go around the neighbourhood to perform a good luck poem on people's doorstep in exchange for candy or money. ua-cam.com/video/Y6iZKGd4Ef0/v-deo.html Easter bunny stuff is quite foreign here even tho stores try their best
    to push it 😂
Also I'm torn between Hop and the dog one for which I should subject my family to watch this easter holidays.

SwimmingInSunlight That said, these secular American variants are very often wild alterations of the much stranger and more colourful American originals. Consider, for instance, the various Christmas gift-giving figures of the Continent: In Italy, a witch on a broomstick; in the Basque Country, a tinkerer raised by fairies; in the Netherlands... an Anatolian Greek bishop-made-saint best known in ecclesiastical history as the foremost advocate of the Nicene Creed, and an African servant usually represented by some dude in blackface.

You mentioned the trope of “Holiday Mascots Child Must Take Over But Doesn’t Want To” trope, and I personally think the best of that trope is Arthur Christmas. It kinda changes the formula a bit, in that Santa’s sons are both desperate to get his job, but it’s not too different. It’s one of two cg animated films by the British studio Aardman (they normally do stop motion) who created Wallace and Gromit, and it’s very charming. I genuinely adore the film, as whilst it follows many tropes, it subverts a lot of them too. Give it a look.

This video is gold, love your stuff! I grew up in a very religious household with a step-grandmother who goes super christian every easter. Apparently she, and her churchy friends, did not appreciate teenage me explaining the pagan origins of Easter aka Eostre and all of the other "christian" holidays. Pagan holidays typlically center around nature, the equinoxes, and old gods/goddesses. Easter celebrates Ostara, the goddess of fertility and birth. Hence the bunnies and eggs. The reason why modern Easter still has the bunnies etc is because christians adopted these elements when creating their holidays in order to more easily convert pagans. A fairly good media depiction of Eostre (that I currently know) is the American Gods tv series. And, well, at least it's better than this animated stuff (imo).
