It isn't though. You can always check the ingredients list, but if you want to be completely safe go for things without an ingredients list. Pick some fresh vegetables, meat and dried grains/legumes and you can easily have a sugar free diet. Nuts and low sugar fruit for snacks.

  • @Dragonheat13

Something he forgot to tell you. He forgot that the term "low-fat" used on labels really means the product is lower in fat than the original product or comparable products. This means a product labeled as "low-fat" may not really be low-fat. Some low-fat products are only 2-3 grams of fat less than their counterparts, plus as Adam said they add either more sugar or more salt to make up for the lost flavor. A better option is to eat foods, that are naturally low-fat such as fruits and vegetable and eat foods with "good fats."

Fat doesn’t directly make you fat, but it is the most calorie dense macronutrient (having more than double the calories of protein and carbs) eating more calories than your body’s needed amount results in them being stored as body fat. That’s not to say sugar is any better, which can still make you fat and has a plethora of bad health effects. To diet, you don’t necessarily have to cut out fat or sugar, but you need to find a balance that is sustainable and meets your goals.

The problem with this segment is it might get some people to just swap their dogma around. Fat bad, carbs good becomes Fat good, carbs bad. True, free sugar consumption has increased a lot in the last century or so but complex carb consumption (which is still sugar in the end, albeit a drip feed rather than a big lump at once) has formed a large proportion of energy intake since the development of agriculture. Keto works for some people who diet, but not for others, and it is not without the risk of both short and long term health effects, some of which we may not know about.

I went on Keto for 5 weeks, Went from 220 down to 200 (6' male), but I felt awful and felt worse as time went on. Introduced some more carbs in, such as a sweet potato a day and a bowl of oatmeal in the morning and felt much better. Granted I fell of the wagon and went back up to 215 over the course of the year, but I do eat less sugar than I used to.

It was a little more complicated than a popular scientist saying: Fat makes you fat! Ever since Eisenhower, rumors started circulating that fat was to blame. Different scientists said different types of fat were the culprit, but when cutting these fats out of their diets didn’t help, people started to lose faith in these studies, and drew up the conclusion that all fats were bad for you! And the sugar industry was quick to capitalize on this!

    Corn syrup sugar...
HFCS was widely embraced by food formulators, and its use grew between the mid-1970s and mid-1990s, principally as a replacement for sucrose. This was primarily because of its sweetness comparable with that of sucrose, improved stability and functionality, and ease of use.

They do but require work, cutting out fat isn't necessary if you're also cutting out sugar and carbs. You're made up of lots of fat, your brain is estimated to be made of 60% saturated fats so cutting fat doesn't seem conducive to a healthy diet. Carbs on the other hand are stored as a glycogen which is a quick fix energy boost that causes increased appetite when it runs low. Even if you fat ready to go to work for you the burning of the stored glycogen doesn't crave just any energy, it craves more glycogen aka carbs.
Pretty vicious cycle to break when literally every food is LOADED with carbs because the industry KNOWS it's addictive and that the body craves it constantly since it burns so fast.

Calories in, calories out. Low fat variations when possible is just another tool like no sugar variations in order to limit calorie density in food allowing you to feel fuller on a calorie deficit. Yes, we need fat but there's no problem getting enough of it if you include some fatty fish, avocado, nuts and olive oil in your diet. There's no need to go for full fat cheese on top of that when those products have low fat variations, picking the low fat version will also limit saturated fat intake which I'd rather get from a steak once in a while. Also, cut added sugar completely, you don't have to choose either or, limit fat and remove added sugar.

Since I have been trying to cut out sugar, I’ve found out how much is contained in a lot of foods. The market is saturated so there’s not a lot of options, so rather than surrender I actively seek out healthy foods or create my own. Some drug and alcohol rehab centers also prohibit their clients from sugar and they really go into withdrawal. They go to meetings in town and I’ve seen them guzzling one soda pop and eating one candy bar after another. Not only has been forced on us it’s also highly addicting, like tobacco and alcohol.

Did the air suddenly contain more fat? The people in America only have so many sources of food that the general public uses, so it's easy to show that American food has decreased in fat content and increased in sugar content. The USDA controlling what foods can be brought to market, also reduces the likelihood of there being many other factors involved. There could be other factors contributing to it, but their effects are likely minimal, and not relevant.
